About the Unisphere Initialization Utility For Fibre Channel storage systems, use the Unisphere™ Initialization Utility to discover storage systems and set network parameters (IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway). In addition, for iSCSI storage systems with iSCSI data ports attached to Windows servers, use the utility to set network parameters for these ports. You can install the initialization utility on a server or other host such as a Unisphere management station (formerly referred to as the Navisphere off-array management station). The only requirement is that the host be connected to the same network subnet as the storage-system management ports.

About the Navisphere CLI The CLI complements or is an alternative to Navisphere Manager. It provides a command line interface for storage-system management, including storage provisioning, status and configuration information retrieval, and control. You can use the CLI to automate management Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

functions through shell scripts and batch files. For more information, refer to the EMC Navisphere Command Line Interface (CLI) Reference .

About the Unisphere Host Agent The host agent registers the server’s host bus adapter (HBA) with the attached storage system when the host agent service starts. This action sends the initiator records for each HBAs to the storage system. Initiator records are used to control access to storage-system data. The agent can then retrieve information from the storage system automatically at startup or when requested by Navisphere Manager or the CLI. The host agent can also: Š

Send operating system drive mapping information to the attached CLARiiON® storage systems.

Š

Monitor storage-system events and notify personnel by e-mail, page, or modem when any designated event occurs.

Š

Retrieve LUN world wide name (WWN) and capacity information from Symmetrix® storage systems.

About the Unisphere Server Utility The server utility allows you to perform the following functions:

6

Š

Update server information to the storage system — Lets you send the server name and IP address to the storage system and, if needed later on, allows you to update or view this data. For Windows servers running Server Utility version 6.20 or later, if the Registration Service feature remains enabled after the installation of the server utility, the utility automatically registers the server’s HBAs with the storage system and updates server information whenever the configuration changes (for example, when you mount new volumes or create new partitions).

Š

Verify server high availability (HA) — Lets you determine if the server is configured for high availability (HA) by verifying that the server has at least one connection path to each storage-system SP, and that PowerPath® or some other failover software, such as VMware native failover, DMP, PV Links, or HP native failover for 11iV3 is running. The utility does not detect any other native

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

failover software, such as Sun StorEdge Traffic Manager or Linux native multipath (MPIO). Š

Use the snapshot feature (Navisphere Express only) — On storage systems with Navisphere Express, you can start and stop a snapshot on the source server (server assigned to the source virtual disk or source LUN), or you can allow or remove access to the snapshot by the secondary server (server assigned to the snapshot).

About the Admhost Utility The Admhost Utility is an executable program that you can run interactively or with a script. It runs only on Windows operating systems, and works with replication software applications (for example, SAN Copy™, SnapView™ and MirrorView™/A devices), and non-replication software devices. Use admhost commands to: Š

Scan for new storage devices

Š

Assign drive letters to the devices

Š

Make storage devices inaccessible to the server operating system

Š

Flush cached data to disk

Š

List drive letters and worldwide names for all server devices

About the Admsnap Utility The Admsnap Utility is an executable program that you can run interactively or with a script to manage SnapView clones and snapshots. The Admsnap Utility resides on the servers connected to the storage system with the SnapView driver installed. Unless indicated otherwise, all references to a Windows server refer to Windows Server 2008, Window Server 2003 or Windows 2000 servers only.

Use admsnap commands to: Š

Scan for new storage devices

Š

Assign drive letters to the devices

Š

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

Installing the Unisphere Initialization Utility The Unisphere Initialization Utility replaces the Navisphere Initialization Utility.

Installation prerequisites To initialize a storage system using the initialization utility, the server must meet the following requirements: Š

Run a supported version of the operating system.

Š

Be connected to the same subnet as the 10/100 management ports of the storage system that you want to initialize. This server may also have Fibre Channel connections to the storage system.

If you have an earlier version of the initialization utility installed, you must uninstall it before installing an updated version.

Installing the Unisphere Initialization Utility on a Windows host or a Windows virtual machine We recommend that you download and install the most recent version of the Unisphere Initialization Utility software from the software downloads page on the Powerlink website. 1. Log in as the administrator (or someone who has administrative privileges) to the Windows hostor a Windows virtual machine that is on the same subnet as the storage system. 2. Download the software: a. From the Powerlink website, select Support > Software Downloads and Licensing > Downloads T-Z > Unisphere Server Software. b. Select the initialization utility, and then select the option to save the zip file to your host. c. Double-click the following executable file to start the installation wizard: UnisphereInitTool-Win-32-x86-language-version-build.exe Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

where: language is either en_US, when only the English version is available, or loc, when the localized versions are available (including English). version and build are the version number and the build number of the software. 3. Follow the instructions on the installation screens to install the initialization utility. A user interface (UI) and a text-based version and a command line version of the utility are installed. 4. When the installation is complete, click Done to exit the wizard. 5. If your hostor a virtual machine is behind a firewall, open the TCP/IP port 2162 (outgoing) and port 2163 (incoming). These ports are used by the initialization utility. If these ports are not opened, the initialization utility will not function properly.

10

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

Running the Unisphere Initialization Utility You can start the initialization utility from the server on which it is installed. The initialization utility has three methods for executing commands — a user interface (UI) version, a command line interface that can be scripted, or a text-based utility that cannot be scripted. Before continuing, make sure that the storage system is powered up completely. For storage-system initialization, connect the server from which you are running the utility and the storage system to the same network subnet. Once you have assigned an IP address to the storage system, the server and storage system can be on different subnets.

Starting the initialization utility UI on a Windows server or a Windows virtual machine To start the initialization utility, select Start > Programs > EMC > Unisphere > Unisphere Storage System Initialization.

Using the UI version of the initialization utility on a Windows host or a Windows virtual machine After you start the utility, it automatically scans the subnet for supported storage systems. When this storage-system discovery operation is complete, the utility lists, by hardware serial number, all uninitialized and initialized storage systems it found. The hardware serial number is on a hanging tag at the rear of the storage system. If the discovery operation did not find the storage system you are installing, verify that the storage system’s management ports are properly cabled to the LAN on which the host resides. The management ports and the host must both reside on the same physical subnet. Proceed through the wizard screens, providing information where required. For more information about completing the wizard, click Help in the wizard’s menu bar. If you entered an SP IP address for the first time or changed an SP IP address, the utility reboots the storage system, and the SP fault light on the back of each SP starts blinking. The reboot takes several minutes Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

11

to complete. When it has completed, the SP fault light (LED) on each SP stops blinking and remains off.

Starting the text-based or command line initialization utility on a Windows server or a Windows virtual machine To start the text-based version, at a command prompt enter cd C:\Program Files\EMC\InitTool or cd C:\Program Files (x86)\EMC\InitTool; then enter ToolCLI.exe. To start the command line version, at a command prompt enter cd C:\Program Files\EMC\InitTool or cd C:\Program Files (x86)\EMC\InitTool; then enter ./inittoolcli and any of the command line switches listed for the initialization utility in the Navisphere Command Line Interface (CLI) Reference Guide (P/N 300-003-628).

Running the Unisphere Host Agent or Unisphere Server Utility This section describes how to configure and/or run the host agent and run the server utility and how to.

Running the Unisphere Host Agent This section describes how to start and stop the host agent and how to test the host agent connections. Starting and stopping the Unisphere Host Agent This section describes how to start and stop the host agent service. This section also describes how to configure the storage system connected to the server. When a storage system experiences heavy input/output traffic (that is, applications are using the storage system), information may not be reported to the host agent in a timely manner, resulting in the host agent taking several minutes to execute a storage-system management task. This behavior is most evident when one host agent is managing multiple storage systems. Also, if the SP event log is large and the host agent configuration file is set up to read all events, it may take a few minutes for the host agent to start.

Starting the host agent on a Windows server 1. Log in as the administrator or the equivalent. 2. Open the Services pane. Š

Verify that the host agent on the server can see the storage system as follows:

22

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

a. Enter the following CLI command: naviseccli |navicli [-d device]| -h hostname port -list -hba You cannot specify both the –d switch and –h switch.

where: [-d device] is the device name for the storage system (only supported with legacy systems). -h hostname is the IP address of the SP. For each HBA in the server, a listing similar to the following will be displayed. For storage systems in a SAN (shared storage) environment, the listing includes HBAs in all connected hosts. Information about each HBA: HBA UID: 10:00:00:60:B0:3E:46:AC:10:00:00:60:B0:3E:46:AC Server Name: siux134 Server IP Address: 128.221.208.134 HBA Model Description: HBA Vendor Description: HBA Device Driver Name: Information about each port of this HBA: SP Name: spa HBA Devicename: sp0 Trusted: NO Logged In: YES Source ID: 1 Defined: YES Initiator Type: 0 Storage Group Name: Storage Group 134

b. In the listing, verify the path for each HBA installed in the host to the SP. Host agent status and error logging While the system is running, the operating system tracks information about host agent events and host agent errors, and places this information in log files on the server. The host agent error log tracks information about the host agent’s startup, the host agent shutdown, and errors that might occur, such as Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

Silent installations and removals using the InstallAnywhere package A silent installation and removal uses a command line interface to install or remove applications on all attached Windows servers. To perform the installation or removal, you need to create a response file on one of the attached servers. A response file stores the setup configuration, which allows you to install or remove the applications on all remaining attached Windows servers by using one command that requires no user input. The following Unisphere products support silent installations and removals: Š

Initialization utility

Š

Host agent

Š

Server utility

Š

Navisphere CLI

Preparing for a silent installation Before you begin the silent installation process, you must determine if you are performing an upgrade, a new installation, which is also referred to as a fresh installation, or both.

32

Š

New installation — You can install the software in the default location or can specify an alternate location in the software_name.properties file.

Š

Upgrade — You can install the software only in the location of the previously installed software. If you specify an alternate location in the software_name.properties file the installer process will override the alternate location you specified and install the software in the same location as the previously installed software.

Š

New installation and upgrade — If you are performing a new installation and an upgrade in the same environment, you will need to perform the steps described in the remaining sections twice, the first time for the new installation and the second for the upgrade. In the case of an upgrade, if you removed the software prior to installing the newer version, this is considered a new installation, so the silent installation process will install the software in the default location or can specify an alternate location in the software_name.properties file. If you did not remove the software

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

prior to installing a newer version, you can install the software only in the location of the previously installed software. If you specify an alternate location in the software_name.properties file the installer process will override the alternate location you specified and install the software in the same location as the previously installed software.

Only a system administrator can perform a silent installation and removal.

Creating the response file This section describes how to create a response file. The response file will store the setup configuration so that you can install the initialization utility, host agent, Navisphere CLI, or server utility on all attached Windows servers using one command. Since no input is required, this type of installation is referred to as a silent installation. We recommend that you download and install the most recent version of the Unisphere server software from the software downloads page on the Powerlink website. 1. Download the software: a. From the Powerlink website, select Support > Software Downloads and Licensing > Downloads T-Z > Unisphere Server Software. b. Select the Unisphere server software you want to install. c. Select the option to save the software to your server and save it to a folder on your local hard drive. d. Navigate to the software you saved on your server and double-click the executable file to start the installation wizard. 2. Open a command prompt window and navigate to the folder where you put the executable installation package. For example, if you copied the installation package to a folder called ResponseFile on your C: drive, you would enter cd ResponseFile in the command window. 3. Depending which executable installation package you downloaded, enter one of the following commands: Š

HostAgent.exe –r

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

33

Š

NaviSECCli.exe –r

Š

ServerUtil.exe –r

Š

InitTool.exe –r

4. Follow the instructions in the installation wizard. When the installation is complete, the installer creates a file in the current working directory called installer.properties. This file contains your responses during the installation process. 5. Navigate to the installer.properties file and rename the file to software_name.properties, where software_name is the name of the software you installed. For example, HostAgent.properties. Continue to the next section to perform a silent installation. 6. If you are performing a new installation, also referred to as a fresh installation, rename the file to software_nameNew.properties, where software_name is the name of the software you installed. For example, HostAgentNew.properties. If you are performing an upgrade or a new installation and an upgrade in the same environment, repeat steps 3 through 5, then rename the installer.properties file to software_nameUpgrade.properties, where software_name is the name of the software you installed. For example, HostAgentUpgrade.properties. 7. If the text user USERNAME@SYSTEMNAME appears at the end of the agent.config file, edit the response file to add USER_ID and SYSTEM_ID or run installer -r again to create a correct response file. 8. Move the properties file or files to a working directory or shared directory.

Running the silent installation Follow the procedure below to perform a silent installation. The InstallAnywhere installation package can use UNC paths or drive paths.

1. On another attached Windows server (not the same server on which you created the response file), open a command prompt window. 2. Depending on where you put the properties file that was created in the previous section, run one of the following commands: 34

Updating or Installing EMC Unisphere Server Software on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Virtual Machines

Š

If the properties file is in the current working directory: software_name.exe -i silent -f software_name.properties For example, HostAgent.exe -i silent -f HostAgent.properties, or if you are performing a new (fresh) installation and an upgrade in the same environment, HostAgent.exe -i silent –f HostAgentNew.properties or HostAgent.exe -i silent –f HostAgentUpgrade.properties.

Š

If the properties file is on a shared drive: software_name.exe -i silent –f \\UNC_PATH\ software_name.properties For example, HostAgent.exe -i silent –f \\UNC_PATH\ HostAgent.properties

If the properties file is given without a path, the installation package will look in the current working directory only.

3. The installation process will start in silent mode. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on all remaining attached Windows servers.

Preparing for a silent removal Follow the procedure below to perform a silent removal. 1. On the Windows server in which you performed the silent installation, open a command prompt window. 2. Navigate to the directory in which you installed the software, and enter the following command: drive:\install_directory\software_name\uninstall.exe -i silent 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on any other attached Windows servers where you want to remove the software.
