INSPIRING EXCELLENCE EVERY DAY

NEWSLETTER Volume 22, Issue 2

OCTOBER, 2016

__________________________________________________________

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: Dear Parents, The start of a new school year can be an exciting time. It opens up many opportunities for you and for each child. Maybe this year your child will discover a new talent or interest or learn about something that inspires a new hobby. Maybe your child will earn excellent grades this year or have a piece of artwork in the student show. This is the time for a fresh start, and you can help your child achieve great things by setting the stage and encouraging a positive attitude and work ethic. Here are a few tips to help you and your child start school with a positive and determined attitude: Know your child’s strengths, and set high expectations: Have a discussion about his or her strengths and academic goals for the year. Express your support and your confidence in his or her efforts and success. Establish a routine: Help your child succeed this school year by establishing a daily homework schedule and a consistent bedtime. Be sure to stay involved by communicating with teachers, checking grades, and asking your child about how school is going on a regular basis. Make a plan: Ask yourself and your child this question: What is needed to support your child’s work toward their goals? Brainstorm baby steps he or she can take toward these goals. On behalf of Fr. Tom and Fr. Sean Paul, I personally want to thank Joe & Roxanne Gugino, Joe Kroczynski, Ben Huffcut, Ann Marie Gerbracht, Rob & Gaetana Galante, and all of our volunteers, for their efforts with our Summer Send-Off. Everyone had a great time! It was great to see so many alumni and their families attend this event. You are very fortunate to have excellent teachers with so much experience working with your precious child. When you encourage and support your child—and hold him or her accountable—everyone can enjoy a successful year. Let’s keep this year focused on our faith and service to God. Wishing you and your child a blessed school year! Sincerely yours with faith,

James Mulé Principal

STEM > STEAM > STREAM:

Understanding the basics of STEM education. We have talked the STEM talk for a few years, incorporating the Arts and Religion in the acronym, but have schools truly made a shift to integration? Frequently the four parts of STEM have been taught separately and, most of the time, independent from each other.

By adopting and understanding the STREAM philosophy, Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (Arts and Religion) are integrated into cross-curricular instruction. The Science, Engineering, and Mathematics fields are made complete by the Technology component that provides a creative and innovative way to problem-solve and apply what has been learned. In recent years, there has been a significant decline in the number of college students choosing majors in science or technology related fields. If graduation rates continue with this trend, there will be workforce shortage in areas of engineering and science fields. When we talk about what makes our school different… we are shifting the mindset of our faculty, staff and students to encourage exploration, innovation, and investigation, as well as the discovery of STREAM-related careers and opportunities. This year, we will be increasing the use of technology in the classroom, hands-on activities in Science, STREAM-related field trips, and connections with community members and resources to support STREAM concepts. This fall we are offering a variety of STREAM Academies after school. Students at each grade level will be able to pick a mini course with an emphasis on creativity, inquiry, design, and other STREAM concepts. Each course offers a variety of engaging, hands-on, interdisciplinary activities. The Fall STREAM Academy session began the week of September 19 and will run through the week of November 28, 2016. Go to www.stameliaschool.org/stream-academy for more details about the STREAM Academy courses being offered and registration information. There is still time to join!

They may be placed in the blue mailbox located outside of the school office. Do not use a REAL stamp, but you are encouraged to place a seal, a sticker or draw a stamp in the corner of the envelope. All children LOVE to receive mail, and our “WEE DELIVER” staff LOVES to deliver it! The classroom streets are as follows:
