Henry1 Adams (1583-1646) and Edith (Squire) Adams (1587-1673) HENRY1 ADAMS was born on 21 Jan 1583 in Barton St. David, Somersetshire, England,1 the son of JOHNA and AGNES (STONE) ADAMS.2 EDITH SQUIRE was baptized on 29 May 1587 in Charlton Mackrell, Somersetshire, the daughter of Henry Squire.3 Henry Adams married Edith Squire in Charlton Mackrell on 19 Oct 1609.4 The Adams family was living in Barton St. David in 1614. By 1622, they had moved to Kingweston, Somersetshire, where they remained until at least 1629.5

Mount Wollaston was later renamed Braintree. The Adams family lived in that part of Braintree that became Quincy in 1792.

Henry and Edith (Squire) Adams were in New England by 24 Feb 1639/40 when Henry received a grant of 40 acres of land at Mount Wollaston, Massachusetts.6 Henry Adams was buried in Braintree on 8 Oct 1646.7 In his will, proved on 8 Jun 1647, he mentions his sons Peter, John, Joseph, Edward, and Samuel; his daughter Ursula; and his wife, who is not named.8 His estate was inventoried on the same day his will was proved and showed a modest estate of £75.13s.0d.9 Edith Adams married, as her second husband, John Fussell.10 She died in Medfield, Mass. on 21 Jan 1672/73.11 John Fussell died in Medfield on 21 Feb 1675/76.12 Henry and Edith (Squire) Adams had the following children, all born in England: i. Lieutenant Henry Adams, born in 1610.13 He married Elizabeth Paine in Braintree on 17 Nov 1643.14 She was the daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Paine, baptized in Tenderden, county Kent on 23 Jul 1620.15 Henry Adams was killed by Indians during King Philip’s War on 21 Feb 1675/76.16 Elizabeth was accidentally shot the same day and died on 22 Feb 1675/ 76.17 ii. Lieutenant Thomas Adams, born about 1612.18 He married Mary (Blackmore?) in Braintree about 1642.19 He died in Chelmsford, Mass. on 20 Jul 1688, age 76.20 Mary died in Charlestown, Mass. on 23 Mar 1694/ 95, age 82.21 iii. Captain Samuel Adams,29 born about 1617.30 He married (1) Mary Eglesfield about 1646.31 She was the daughter of Emmanuel and Susanna (Gray) Eglesfield of London.32 He married (2) Rebecca Graves.33 She was the daughter of Thomas and Katherine (Gray) Graves, and a cousin of his first wife.34 Rebecca died in Chelmsford, Mass. on 8 Sep or 8 Oct 1664.35 Samuel married (3) Esther Sparhawk in Chelmsford on 7 May 1668.36 She was born in 1636, the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary (Angier) Sparhawk of Cambridge.37 Samuel died in Chelmsford on 24 Jan 1688/89.38 Esther died in 1692. v. Ursula Adams,39 born about 1619.40 She married (1) Stephen Streeter of Charlestown about 1640.41 She married (2) Samuel Hosier of Watertown on 13 Oct 1657.42 She married (3) William Robinson of Dorchester about 1666.43 She married (4) Griffin Craft of Roxbury in Dorchester on 15 Jul 1673.44

John Adams,47 baptized in Kingweston on 10 Dec 1622.48 He married Anne _______ about 1650.49 He died in Cambridge in 1706.50 Anne was living in October 1714.51 viii. Joseph Adams,52 born in Kingweston on 9 Feb 1626.53 He married Abigail Baxter on 26 Nov 1650 in Braintree.54 She was born in Roxbury, Mass. in September 1634, the daughter of Gregory and Margaret (Puddy) Baxter.55 She died in Braintree on 27 Aug 1692.56 Joseph died there on 6 Dec 1694, aged about 68 years.57

Ensign Edward Adams,58 baptized in Kingweston on 19 Apr 1629.59 He married (1) Lydia Penniman about 1652.60 She was baptized in Boston on 22 Feb 1634/35, the daughter of James and Lydia (Eliot) Penniman.61 She died in Medfield on 3 Mar 1675/76.62 Edward married (2) the widow Abigail (Craft) Ruggles-Day of Roxbury.63 She was the daughter of Griffith and Alice Craft and the widow of John Ruggles and Ralph Day.64 She died in Medfield on 19 Jan 1706/07.65 He married (3) Sarah Taylor on 6 Jan 1709/10.66 Edward Adams died in Medfield on 12 Nov 1716,67 “the last of the original settlers.”68

Peter2 Adams (c1622-c1690) and Rachel (_______) Adams PETER2 ADAMS (HENRY1) was born in England about 1621.69 He probably came to New England with his father and mother. Peter Adams married RACHEL _______,70 probably about 1648. They lived first in Braintree, Mass., where Peter was made a freeman of Massachusetts Bay Colony on 22 May 1650.71 They moved to Medfield, Mass. in 1652.72 Their home in Medfield was burned by the Indians in 1675 during King Philip’s War.73 Peter Adams died in Medfield in 1690, aged 68.74 His estate was inventoried on 23 Oct 1690.75 His estate was divided on 1 Apr 1691. Participating in the division were his eldest son, Peter; Hannah, wife of John Fisher; his sons John, Joseph, and Samuel; and his daughters Mary and Ruth. George Fairbank, husband of Peter’s deceased daughter Rachel is also mentioned.76 Peter and Rachel (_______) Adams had the following children: i. Rachel Adams,77 born in Braintree.78 She married George Fairbanks in Medfield on 1 Dec 1671.79 He was born in 1650, the son of George and Mary (Adams) Fairbanks.80 Rachel died in Medfield on 12 May 1678.81 ii. Dr. Peter Adams,82 born in Medfield in April 1653.83 He married Experience Cook in Medfield on 27 May 1680.84 He died on 8 Dec 1723.85 iii. Hannah Adams,86 born in Medfield on 16 Jan 1655/56.87 She married (1) John Fisher in Medfield on 6 Mar 1673/74.88 He was born in Dedham, Mass. in 1652, the son of Joshua Fisher.89 He died in Medfield on 15 Oct 1627.90 Hannah married (2) as his second wife, Joseph Metcalf, in 1730.91 He was born in Medfield on 22 Nov 1658, the son of John and Mary Metcalf.92 He died in Medfield on 18 Dec 1741.93 Hannah died there on 1 Nov 1746.94 iv. Henry Adams Family John3 Adams (c1658-1725) and Michal (Bloice) Adams (1664-1752) JOHN3 ADAMS (PETER2 HENRY1) was born in Medfield, Mass., probably between 1657 and 1659.118 MICHAL3 BLOICE (RICHARD2 EDMUND1) was born in Watertown, Mass. on 3 Apr 1664.119 John Adams married Michal Bloice in Medfield, Mass. on 2 Apr 1685.120 John Adams moved to Canterbury, Conn. after 1 Mar 1706/07.121 On 8 Dec 1708, he bought 400 acres of land there.122 John Adams of Canterbury made his will on 14 Feb 1724. He mentions his wife Michal; his sons Samuel, Richard, and Michael; and his daughters, Mary Adams and Ruth Paine.123 He died there on 26 Feb 1724/25.124 Michal died there on 4 Apr 1752.125 John and Michal (Bloice) Adams had the following children, all born in Medfield: i. Samuel Adams, born on 25 Feb 1685/ 86.126 He married (1) Mary Plimpton in Medfield on 22 Dec 1709.127 She was born in Medfield in July 1692, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Morse) Plimpton.128 She died in Canterbury on 28 Mar 1718.129 He married (2) Margaret _______.130 He died on 24 Apr 1742.131 Margaret died on 19 Mar 1652/53 [sic].132 ii. Mary Adams, born on 11 Mar 1686/ 87133 iii. Patience Adams, born on 21 Mar 1689/90,134 died on 28 May 1698135 iv. Ruth Adams, born on 10 Dec 1691.136 She married Abraham Paine on 19 Dec 1717/18.137 He was the son of ELISHA and REBECCA (DOANE) PAINE, q. v. v. 98.141 He married Zerviah Brown in Canterbury on 17 Feb 1728/29.142 He died in Salisbury, Conn. on 24 Nov 1703.143 Zerviah died there on 20 Jul 1787, age 75 years.144 viii. Richard Adams, born on 28 Sep 1699.145 He married Mary Cleveland in Canterbury on 30 Mar 1730.146 Richard died on 17 Apr 1733.147 Mary married (2) Samuel Butts of Canterbury on 8 Jan 1735/36.148 ix. Joshua Adams, born on 22 Jul 1701,149 died in Medfield on 1 Apr 1706150 x. Abigail Adams, born on 23 Apr 1703,151 died in Medfield on 14 May 1706152 xi. Bethia Adams, born on 8 Feb 1704/ 05,153 died in Medfield on 1 Apr 1706154 xii. Michael Adams, born on 1 Mar 1706/ 07.155 He married Sarah Shuttlesworth in Medfield.156 Sarah died on 27 Jan 1747.157 He died in Thompson, Conn. on 26 Aug 1776.158

John4 Adams (1695-1762) and Abigail (Cleveland) Adams (1715-1782) JOHN4 ADAMS (JOHN3 PETER2 HENRY1) was born in Medfield, Mass. on 14 Dec 1695.159 ABIGAIL4 CLEVELAND (JOSIAH2-3 MOSES1) was born on 3 Jun 1715 in Canterbury, Conn.160 She married Benjamin Brown,161 with whom she had one son.162 John Adams married Abigail (Cleveland) Brown in 1733.163 They lived in the North Society of Canterbury, west of Buck Hill.164 John Adams of Canterbury made his will on 4 May 1762. He mentions his wife Abigail.165 John Adams died in Canterbury on 16 Jan 1762 and is buried there in the Cleveland Cemetery.166 5

Henry Adams Family Abigail Adams died in Canterbury on 15 Dec 1782.167 Her estate was administered on 19 Feb 1782/83, and the papers mention her eldest son Benjamin Brown.168 John and Abigail Adams are both buried in a small graveyard in the northern part of Canterbury.169 John and Abigail (Cleveland) (Brown) Adams had the following children, all born in Canterbury: i. Lois Adams, born on 17 Nov 1741.170 She was living, unmarried, when her mother’s estate was divided on 19 Feb 1783.171 ii. Mary Adams, born on 23 Jun 1743.172 She married Joshua Parker173 and “probably removed to Putney, Vt.”174 iii. Captain John Adams, born on 12 Feb 1744/45.175 He married (1) Mary Parker on 5 Oct 1769 in Putney, Vt.176 She was born in Needham, Mass. on 23 Sep 1747, the daughter of Joshua and Jemima (Davenport) Parker.177 She died “of a cancer” in Canterbury on 11 Oct 1798.178 He married (2) the widow Hannah Faucet (or Fassett) of Brooklyn, Conn. on 2 Nov 1802.179 John Adams died on 10 Dec 1818 in Canterbury and is buried in Cleveland Cemetery in Canterbury.180 Hannah died on 9 Feb 1821, age 65.181 iv. Lydia Adams, born on 12 Jun 1746.182 She married John Wheeler in Canterbury on 15 Nov 1764.183 v. Cornelius Adams, born on 21 Mar 1748.184 He married (1) Esther Steadman in Canterbury on 14 Apr 1774.185 She was born on 25 Sep 1748186 and died on 21 Aug 1805.187

He married (2) Mrs. Olive (Chaffee) Sanger.188 She died on 31 Oct 1809, age 53. 189 He married (3) Mrs. Abigail Call of Sterling, Conn.190 Cornelius died in Canterbury on 30 Aug 1823.191 Abigail died on 21 May 1838, age 76.192 vi. Ebeneezer Adams, born on 6 Oct 1749.193 He married (1) Mary Morse on 8 Apr 1779.194 She was born on 9 Mar 1752195 and died on 17 Sep 1792.196 He married (2) Molly Merritt on 13 Mar 1794.197 She was the daughter of Joseph Merritt, born about 1760.198 Ebeneezer died in Canterbury on 31 Jan 1835.199 Molly died on 29 Dec 1843, age 83.200 vii. Abigail Adams, born on 13 Jun 1751.201 She married Rev. John Cleveland in Canterbury on 2 Feb 1773.202 viii. Samuel Adams, born on 16 Mar 1753.203 He married Betsy Littlefield in Canterbury on 11 May 1777.204 She died on 4 Aug 1820, age 64.205 He died at Williamstown, Vt. on 23 Nov 1827.206 ix.
