Helsinki Metropolitan Area – Growing fast, Connecting fast MIPIM 2016 March 15–18, in Cannes, France Helsinki metropolitan area is introducing major urban development projects at HELSINKI–FINLAND Stand P.1–M15

Helsinki metropolitan area is in the middle of an ambitious transformation. The wellreachable area is one of the fastest growing metropolises in Europe. By 2050, the population of the Helsinki Region will increase from the current 1,400,000 to over 1,800,000. In the next two decades, dozens of billions will be invested in smart construction and an even more effective urban transportation system. 2015 saw the opening of the Ring Rail Line, which provides direct access to the Helsinki Airport. The western metro connection will be launched this year. The Helsinki metropolitan area is attractive to international investors and businesses, because it provides the perfect mix of economic, social and ecological sustainability. The openness of business and administration – and society as a whole – is a key element in Helsinki. Helsinki is also a forerunner in energy efficiency and a strong hub for start-up activities. Helsinki offers an open and flexible operational environment, where the population is well educated. Helsinki is a city that encourages open democracy; the City has, for instance, an open data interface which provides free access to the information concerning the City’s decision making, procurements and expenditure. The City is actively deploying Service Design tools to re-energise its operations and services.

A major development area in Helsinki and in a state of rapid change, the Pasila– Vallila–Kalasatama Axis of Growth is where the centre of Helsinki is expanding, three kilometres north of downtown. These dynamic commercial, business and residential hubs will transform metropolitan Helsinki, while preserving the uniquely human scale of downtown.

Pasila Pasila is already known for its national convention venues, state agencies, corporate headquarters, a powerful media cluster, and the largest indoor sports arena in the country. Strategically placed Pasila is already superbly connected to public transportation and in 10 years, there will be 900 trains, 400 trams and 850 buses operated every single day. The Central Pasila Area is in the middle of massive growth, supported by the Finnish Government (represented by Senate Properties) and the City of Helsinki as the original land owners. They have already begun their investment in the Central Pasila Area and the total investment will be worth 300 million euros by 2021. The local population will double and the number of jobs will multiply. There will be half a million square metres of new office and commercial space. The re-development of Pasila has started from Tripla – Pasila’s three block centre for commerce, culture, business, housing, hotel accommodation and public transport in Central Pasila – to be opened by the end of the current decade around the Pasila railway station. The second stage of the Pasila development will comprise the Railyard residential and office area, and the third stage will involve the Tower area. Helsinki High-rise is an International Design-Build Competition. The Government of Finland and the City of Helsinki are seeking a developer for the start-up area of the Pasila Tower area in Central Pasila via an international design-build competition, to be launched by the end of 2016. The aim of the competition is to choose a high-quality plan for the development and construction of 150,000-200,000 square metres for office, residential and commercial space.

Vallila Vallila is a former industrial area between Pasila and Kalasatama, which is transforming into a multifunctional area with housing, offices, and commercial services. The area’s strong workplace concentration, housing, and large corporate head offices will be complemented by new residential housing and premises for business in the former railway depot and industrial blocks. The health technology, media and design, telecom, finance and education have a strong profile here. Recently, it has increasingly attracted big investments of companies like GE Healthcare and relocations of company headquarters.

Kalasatama Robust development is underway in Kalasatama, a waterfront district that will be home to 20,000 residents – ten-fold the current number – and 8,000 jobs once completed in the 2030’s. Kalasatama is a national spearhead site for smart urban development. Smart Kalasatama is planned and built with broad-based solutions that will apply best practices and technologies. The vision for Kalasatama is to be so resource-wise that the new residents will gain “an extra hour” a day. Smart Kalasatama will rely on cooperation among the City, businesses and residents. The City of Helsinki’s objective is to make Kalasatama one of the most attractive environments for collaborative development in Europe. The Kalasatama centre, REDI, in the heart of the district will include a shopping centre with parking, six high-rise residential buildings over 100 metres tall, a hotel tower and an office tower. The high-rises and adjacent parks will combine residential space, commercial services and rewarding lifestyles in unique ways. Residents and visitors can enjoy the Suvilahti Cultural Centre built into a former power plant, The Abattoir, a former slaughterhouse being developed into a centre of good food, and the services of the Helsinki Wholesale Market. Kalasatama is also the metro station, through which hundreds of thousands visitors of Helsinki Zoo pass annually. Office construction is already underway in Kalasatama. The office spaces are designed to serve the varied needs of a broad range of both Finnish and international businesses of all sizes. The many benefits to businesses in Kalasatama include excellent transport connections.

The West Metro – a corridor for growth and development The Helsinki metro will be extended to Espoo, the second largest and the fastest growing city in Finland, resulting in great opportunities for companies that want to establish themselves and invest along the western leg of the metro system. The West Metro Growth Corridor, with 13 new metro stations, will open up numerous opportunities for knowledge intensive businesses, investments and services. The West Metro extension that is currently under construction is Finland’s largest ever investment in infrastructure. The West Metro will transport 170,000 passengers every day, with the first eight metro stations opening in August 2016 and an additional five by 2020. The goal is to attract 70,000 new inhabitants along this new corridor, while the target in terms of employment growth is to increase the number of jobs by 100 %. All metro stations will be surrounded by an urban centre dominated by blocks of flats and further surrounded by a single-family house area. The centres will provide good services and be close to nature. They will each provide housing, work and services for approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Strongly developing station areas will facilitate the testing and implementation of various cleantech and energy efficiency related methods and solutions both during and after construction. The construction of the West Metro growth corridor is powered by Espoo Innovation Garden – home to the largest innovation hub in the Northern Europe providing a thriving environment for international businesses, world's hottest Startup Sauna, vibrant cultural scene, active sports clubs as well as a renowned science and research community.

Aviapolis In MIPIM, City of Vantaa introduces Aviapolis – one of the fastest growing business areas in Finland. Aviapolis is the economic engine of Vantaa and up to 50,000 people are expected to work in the area in 2020. Aviapolis brings together professionals from different fields and provides an inspiring environment for any modern business. Aviapolis has the advantage of being easily accessible by air, which strengthens its position in global competition. With the Helsinki Airport and the new Ring Rail Line, accessibility is supreme: 2 minutes to the airport and 25 minutes to Helsinki city center.

Currently, Aviapolis is home to more than 18,000 people, but there is plenty of room for more. A new suburb, Aviapolis city, is already emerging as we speak, complete with all public services. Aviapolis is full of shops, hotels, restaurants and much more – all at your service. Situated along the Ring III, which is the busiest shopping street in Finland, Aviapolis will become a hotspot for speciality shops over the next few years. One of the Finland’s biggest shopping centre Jumbo is also located in Aviapolis.

At HELSINKI–FINLAND stand in MIPIM 2016 are represented the Metropolitan Cities Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa as well as the cities of Turku and Tampere together with the corporate partners Senate Properties, Skanska, SRV Group Plc and YIT Construction Ltd.
