Helsinki City Marathon

– A family of running events that grows and renews itself

In this magazine Helsinki City Marathon celebrates 35th anniversary with brand new cource ............... 4

HCM is approaching middle age. Saturday 15th of August will mark the birthday of the event, and we will celebrate it by working. As organisers, our goal is to offer a high-quality running event for all participants. The new HCM will offer a great sports experience at the best locations in Helsinki. We want to keep up with the changing times, which is why we have listened to your wishes carefully. The changes we are making were inspired by feedback from participants.

its history this year. The marathon is all about the route, and the most important changes to HCM are route-related. Runner-friendliness is the underlying principle of the event, and it can be seen in a number of details at the event. We wanted more audience, more entertainment through music, improved refreshment service, more sponge stations and, of course, a route that stays within the borders of Helsinki. This year’s event achieves all of the above. Perskindol Helsinki Street Run is the latest member of the HCM family. Street Run is the perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of what the marathon has to offer, without the toughness of the full distance. The Street Runners start 45 minutes after the marathoners and run for 17 kilometres along a route that follows the second lap of the HCM route. Street Run is the best way to test your marathon mood!

Everyone who witnessed the Chiquita Minimarathon felt touched by the sincere and warm nature of the event. Almost 2,000 children running from the Eläintarha sports field to the Olympic Stadium is something both the children and their parents will remember for a long time. Registration to this family event is open until 12 August. I wish you all a warm welcome to HCM!

Helsinki City Marathon

celebrates 35th anniversary with brand new course The wishes of runners were listened to when planning the new Helsinki City Marathon route 2015. The new, faster route is made up of one lap that is run twice, near the city centre. The route has frequent, well-equipped service points and it offers more cheers and things to see for the runners.

H

elsinki City Marathon will celebrate its 35th birthday in August 15th with a new route that takes the runners from the smooth urban passageways to the city’s parks and along its coasts. The route winds in central Helsinki and includes more service points than before. The new route has been planned based on the feedback from runners, in close cooperation with the city of Helsinki. Markku Haverinen, HCM Event Director, says that the new route will make Helsinki City Marathon worthy of its title, because the race will no longer include a visit to Espoo. - The new route is flatter and more comfortable to run than the old one. In particular, we wanted to avoid hills towards the end of the race. The last eight kilometres of the new route are run on flat, paved road. This makes the course smoother for the runners and helps them break their personal records. The long hills that used to slow down and exhaust the runners at the end of the route are now run twice in the course of the run, but in the other direction. In the new route, everyone will run in the same direction nearly the whole time, which makes running smoother and safer. Compared to previous years, the new route contains twice the amount of showers and allows for a more strategic placement of the service points. There will be two additional refuelling points near the end of the race.

- On a typical Saturday summer day, the Töölönlahti Bay and the Helsinki-Baana bicycle lane are busy with people. The old route did not go through these places, which means we can expect more audiences and cheers this time. All in all the runners will have an overlook of the architecture and culture of Finland’s capital. The runner will face a part of the historical and the most beautiful Helsinki: the Olympic Stadium, Lauttasaari-Island, Kaivopuisto-Park and Esplanadi-street and a part of the architecturally interesting city centre are all located along the marathon route. This year is also the last chance to finish the race to historical Olympic Stadium before it will be closed for renovation for some years. So welcome to experience one of the most beautiful part of Scandinavia around the streets of Helsinki, we promise it will stay unforgettable!

If you have any questions, please contact the info desk at the HCM office. You can reach the office by phone +358 9 3481 2405 or by e-mail maraton@ sul.fi. The phone lines might be quite busy at times during the event.

Race package All registered runners must collect their race package (incl. bib number, safety pins and event t-shirt) by 1:00 PM on the race day. Runners need only know their bib number before picking up the package, no start permit needed. Event t-shirts must be collected from separate assigned tables after collecting the bib. T-shirts cannot be picked-up afterwards. If the participant cannot collect his or her race package by him/herself, another person is able to do that. In that case, please give your bib number information to the person picking up your bib.

Street Run running shirt Street Run runners must wear the yellow event t-shirt on them during the whole run. Shirts will be delivered at the competition office with bib numbers.

Bib Number Bib number is personal and it cannot be given to another person because timing system works with personal bib tag attached to the bib number. Runners need to wear the bib in order to get official result. The bib number must the attached in front of a shirt and be visible during the whole race. Runners not wearing bib numbers will be removed from the running route. Only the runners wearing bib numbers are allowed to enter the finish and equipment storage area. Remember to fold and remove the separation letterhead part of the bib before use. If you use luggage service, you can give the smaller luggage tag with your number on it to the personnel at the luggage service and make the service faster. Number is disposable and do not need to return. Every runner must fill in ICE (In Case of Emergency) phone number at the back side of the bib number.

Equipment Storage The equipment storage area is located outside the Olympic Stadium section B. Runners can leave closed bags there with the bib number identification string attached to the bag. Identification string will be at the envelope with the bib number. Storage area is guarded and only runners wearing a bib number will be let in the area. The storage will be open from 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM on the race day. Runners can give the smaller luggage tag at their bib number to the personnel at the luggage service when picking up the bag and make the service faster. Please note that the organizer is not responsible for lost items and the storage service for valuable is recommended for items such as wallets, cell phones, and watches etc.

Maximum running time The maximum running time in Helsinki City Marathon is 6 hours. A runner not finishing by 9:15 PM cannot be either guaranteed an official timing or result. Also note that this 6hr pace schedule must be followed throughout the race: At 5km 41minutes from the start At 10km 1hr 24 minutes from the start At 20km 2hrs 49 minutes from the start At 30km 4hrs 17 minutes from the start At 40km 5hrs 40 minutes from the start At the Finish Line 6hrs from the start Street Run running time is 5 hours 30 minutes from the start. Runners must finish by 9:15 PM.

Timing Participants must obey the organizer´s guidance to use the system correctly. Runners who does not comply with the instructions, does not promise official time and result. Helsinki City Marathon and Street Run timing system works with bib tag attached to the bib number. Bib number needs to be attached to the front of the shirt, so that it is clear and visible. Bib number is personal and it cannot be given or transferred to another person for safety reasons. Gross time (from firing of the gun to crossing the finish line) is the official result of the race. Also so called the net time, time from crossing the starting line to crossing the finish line, will be given for each runner.

The route The route of the Helsinki City Marathon and Street Run is strongly influenced by the sea and the parks. The preliminary route map can be found from this magazine and also from the event websites. The police and traffic controllers will be controlling the route and showing the way for the runners in the intersections. In case the intersection is not guided, it is advised to always go straight. Each kilometer is indicated by a km-sign. Timing clocks are located in front of the leading runner and at 5/10/15/20/25/30/35 km marks and at the finish.

Start Start place is at Mäntymäentie-street near Töölö Sports Hall. Helsinki City Marathon start at 3 PM and Street Run at 3:45 PM. Runners should be at the start area 15 minutes before the start. Marathon runners are advised to select their spot at the start area according to their own expected finishing time (signs: 2:30, 3:00, 3:30, and 4:00 etc.). Make sure that you are in time for the start!

Finish The finish line is located at the legendary Helsinki Olympic Stadium. After crossing the finish line runners can move towards the post-race refreshment area drinks and snacks. Due to large number of participants, different kind of diets cannot be taken into consideration. Also medical service will be located near the finish line at the Stadium.

the expect of runners

This May’s Helsinki City Run left both the organizers and the runners satisfied. The participants praised the well organized event.

Framework for dreams

Markku Haverinen, Event Director, says everything went as planned from the organizer’s point of view: - Every year, we provide the runners with a framework, and they can use it to realise their dreams. The joy and success I see on their faces are the best reward for our efforts. Last year, we renewed our service concept, and this year, we complemented the change with a new registration and results service

system. They worked fluently, serving the spectators both along the route and at home: - All in all, I had a good feeling about the day. And judging by the comments of runners, I was not the only one feeling good.

14th of May 2016 Next year’s HCR will be held on Saturday 14th of May. We are making more changes to the event, for example, the start and finish areas will be located outside the stadium due to renovation works. More information on the changes will be available in the magazines published later this year. Stay tuned!

Perskindol Helsinki Street Run – An introduction to the charms of the marathon! Perskindol Helsinki Street Run will be held on the same day with Helsinki City Marathon, on 15th of August 2015. The 17-kilometre route follows the route of the marathon along the streets of Helsinki.

T

his is a new and very attractive event that offers a unique route equipped with good refreshment service, in the middle of the beautiful Helsinki city centre. Perskindol Helsinki Street Run will start at 3:45 p.m., slightly after the marathon. For the participants, this means access to the full HCM service and the atmosphere of a full marathon, Markku Haverinen, Event Director at HCM says. Haverinen says that everyone who likes running can participate in the event, whatever their goals may be. - Perskindol Helsinki Street Run offers the atmosphere of a full marathon, an excellent refreshment service, lots of audience and a unique route. It could serve as a longer speed workout for those training for a marathon in autumn, or as a milestone before a half marathon. The route of Street Run follows the second lap of Helsinki City Marathon. The new route takes the runners from the flat urban passageways to the city’s parks, along its coasts, and amidst the streets of the city centre. Street Runners wear yellow shirts to distinguish from the marathoners. - As organizers, we hope everyone coming to the event will wear yellow, because it will help us guide them to the right direction, Haverinen concludes.

Good to know: -- Timing system works with bib tag attached to the bib number. Bib number needs to be attached to the front of the shirt, so that it is clear and visible. Bib number is personal and it cannot be given or transferred to another person for safety reasons. Number is disposable and do not need to return. -- There is no age limit but minors participation is with guardian´s responsibility -- Entry fees are non-refundable in every case. The runner does not need to inform the organization about possible cancellation before the race. -- Entry to Street Run is personal and it can not be transferred to another runner. -- Runners must wear the yellow event t-shirt on them during the whole run. Shirts will be delivered at the competition office with bib numbers. -- Start place is at Mäntymäentie-street near Töölö Sports Hall at 3:45 PM. Runners should be at the start area 15 minutes before the start. Finish is located inside the Olympic Stadium. -- The maximum running time is 5 hours 30 minutes from the start. Runners must finish by 9:15 PM. -- There will be 6 refreshment stations at the course. All stations serve water and Maxim sports drink (taste orange-lemon). Some stations also serve bananas and pickled cucumbers. -- Best women and men in open class will be awarded right after the finish at the Stadium.

Happy runners at HCM A number of happy runners crossed last year the finish line of Helsinki City Marathon, including groups of friends and entire families. We asked a few of them to share their feelings immediately after finishing.

2.

Krista Savilampi crossed the finish line looking happy and in good strength: - I did well. My finish time equals my personal best, which is 3:40. I improved my time by 10 minutes from my previous HCM two years ago, Krista told us happily after the finish line.

3.

HCM was the 27th marathon for Risto Paulamäki from Lahti: - I turned 60 this year and decided that I would run he marathon first in Copenhagen in spring and later here in Helsinki. This time, I improved my time by 30 minutes, said Paulamäki who finished in 4:56.

1.

Jarno Saarinen from Lahti set the pace for his friend Timo Mäkinen, helping him to finish under four hours: – This was an excellent workout, preparing me for my 100 km ultra trail at Wihan kilometrit. The refreshment service was good, there were plenty of spectators and I liked the route. And my friend achieved his target, Saarinen noted happily.

4.

Felix Ny kopp, a young man from Espoo, crossed the finish line in 3:43, looking strong. Felix said he had only ran about five workouts of 10 kilometres and one half marathon before going for the full distance. He did not have time for more because of his military service. – This was a fine experience. The entire race was rally good. I will definitely come again next year, Felix said.

5.

On his 60th birthday, Timo Määttä (second from the left) challenged his friends Martti Kosonen and his children Juho and Hanna-Maija to run the marathon. Everyone finished in under five hours, reaching their target time. – This went damn well, we ran the entire race and talked to each other along the way, Määttä noted happily.
