Mobile Police Department Child Abuse Detail The Mobile Police Officers assigned to the Child Advocacy Center through the Youth Services Unit of MPD include: Sergeant Matt James, Corporal Jack Bishop, Det. Jackie Bridgeforth, Det. Chris Mitchell, and Det. Jeff Corley. Lt. Alfred Davis is the supervisor of the Youth Services Unit. Sergeant Matt James, who leads this detail, has been with MPD for 10 years. These officers are dedicated to protecting our children and seeking justice to keep them safe by investigating all felony child abuse cases and child sexual abuse cases within the Mobile jurisdiction. MPD has had highly trained investigators assigned to the center since its opening in 1988.The detectives conduct joint interviews with DHR case workers assigned to the CAC, with children and family members, when allegations have been made. Interviews are conducted with possible witnesses of crimes against children. Dt. Jackie Bridgeforth, Dt. Jeff Corley, Detectives respond to crime scenes 24 hours a day, seven days a week to interview child Dt. Chris Mitchell, Corporal Jack Bishop, victims and their perpetrators. Assistant DA Nicki Patterson works closely with this unit on and Sergeant Matt James (sitting) all city cases. This Mobile Police Department Unit is an integral part of the Case Review Team, which consists of professionals from eight different agencies. The team is responsible for ensuring the credibility of each case. They are responsible for collecting evidence to present in court and to testify about cases. The goals of these officers are to assist in the prosecution of perpetrators of these horrendous crimes and to protect victims from further abuse. Mugshots Grill and Bar soft opening event at their new Mobile location at 6255 Airport Blvd. was held Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30. During the soft opening, lunch and dinner shifts served guests who paid $5.00 per person, This included an appetizer, entrée, soup, salad, beverages, and/or desserts. Reservations were required for this 3 day event. The goal of this 3 day event to benefit the Child Advocacy Center of Mobile is $10,000.

In Memoriam: John Franklin Shriner, M.D. by Patrick F. Guyton The Child Advocacy Center recently lost a long-time friend and dedicated colleague with the passing of Dr. John F. Shriner, M.D., FAAP. For almost 17 years, from 1992 to 2009, John served as our Medical Director, conducting forensic medical exams in cases involving allegations of sexual abuse of children in this community. In my over 25 years of working here, I have never known a more dedicated and passionate advocate for children, whose primary and first concern in every case was always the safety and welfare of the child and, secondarily, bringing to justice those who harmed them. John Shriner, born in 1923, was a member of the “greatest generation”, having grown up during the Great Depression of the 1930’s and then serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1950 and completed his pediatric residency there in 1953. For the next 36 years he practiced as a pediatrician here in Mobile, first in private practice, then in a joint practice, and finally in group practice for 23 years at the Children’s Medical Group—a total career in which he served over 500,000 children. But like so many of his generation, his moral gyroscope was focused on serving others and his community. In 1973 he was hired as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, among the first faculty members hired by Dr. Fred Whiddon at the new University of South Alabama College of Medicine, a post Dr. Shriner held for 38 years. Thus, in May, 1992, three years after officially retiring from medical practice in 1989, John came to work for the CAC to be our first Medical Director. After receiving specialized training in several internships in child sexual abuse forensic medical exams, he conducted a clinic for us two days per week at the USA Pediatric Outpatient Clinic. And each Thursday he attended the CAC’s Case Review Team meetings where he presented the findings in the cases he had seen recently. On a frequent basis he testified in Circuit Court in criminal cases where so often it was his crucial testimony that helped convict child molesters. In addition to many professional pediatric groups, he was a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and a founder of the Alabama Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. He was a major presenter at dozens of national, regional, state and local child abuse conferences and trainings. But those of us who worked here with him, at any time during his l7 years of service to the Child Advocacy Center, knew John as a trusted colleague and much more as a dear friend. Each week, twice a week after his clinic, he would visit the CAC and go up and down the halls checking on staff, stopping to share a story from his life experiences or inquire about a family member or comment on a troubling case the team here was working on. His wonderful sense of humor and twinkling eyes with his infectious smile always made our day after a visit from him. Our community, the many children John saw and helped heal over his five decades of medical service, and especially those of us who counted him as our colleague, are all better off from having had him as an advocate and a friend. Child Abuse Awareness Month A news conference was held at the CAC to celebrate April as Child Abuse Awareness Month. Pat Guyton also announced an awareness campaign to educate the general public on the mission of the Child Advocacy Center. Lamar Outdoor Advertising in an effort to promote the services which the CAC provides designed and displayed billboards around the city. Ms. Paula Loper discussed plans for the Child Personal Safety Curriculum, a joint effort with the Mobile County Public Schools. Pinwheels surrounded the grounds around the CAC to symbolize child victims who came to the center for services last year. Pinwheels

Cheers to Children Café 615 will host a benefit for the Child Advocacy Center on Monday, July 22nd from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m at Café 615. Keith Palmer, Vice President of the CAC Board of Directors announced dates for this year’s Sale-A-Thon to benefit the CAC. This will be the 19th Annual Sales Promotion to benefit the Child Advocacy Center. Dates for the promotion are July 1st through July 22nd. The 11th Annual Lyon Newell Charity Throws Meet was held at UMS-Wright Preparatory School on Wednesday, March 20. 21 teams participated in the event which raised over $7,000 for the CAC. This unique sporting event for discus, javelin, and shot put competition is held each year in memory of Lyon Newell, an outstanding athlete and state record holder in the discus and shot put. Serve it Up With Love Al Fuchs Memorial Greater Mobile Junior Championship The 2013 Al Fuchs Memorial Greater Mobile Junior Championship was held Saturday, April 13 at the Copeland Cox Tennis Center. 102 juniors from ages 8 to 18 participated in the fifth anniversary of this U.S.T.A. sanctioned tournament. Ruth’s Chris 11th Anniversary Jazzy Lunch Ruth’s Chris Steak House hosted the 11th Annual Ruth’s Chris Jazzy Lunch for the CAC on Sunday, April 14, raising a record of over $73,000 to help child abuse victims. This brings the total of the past 11 years to $624,000. CAC Board President Terry Ankerson served as Chair of this unique event. Phillips Preparatory School

Phillips Prep School’s Eighth Grade Class presented a check for $2,800 to the CAC at their Honors Program on Thursday, May 21st.The gift is part of the Honoring the Communities Project sponsored by the Gulf Coast Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education. Language Arts teacher Linda Goodson used their study of Holocaust-related literature to help students discover the importance of speaking out against and working to end injustice. The project honors the memory of the 1.5 million Jewish children and teenagers murdered during the Holocaust. To honor Phillips Prep School Leadership Team these young victims, the eighth graders chose again to support the CAC. During the year the students volunteered at the center, cleaning and organizing donated items. They raised money through several fundraisers, including jewelry and doughnut sales, and a talent show, as well as personal contributions. This year’s gift brings the total to nearly $30,000 that Phillips Prep School eighth graders have raised for the Child Advocacy Center during the past fifteen years as part of their annual Holocaust Service Project. We appreciate these young people learning to volunteer and give back to their community to help children who have been abused. The Mobile Realtors Community Relations Easter Basket Donation

The Mobile Association of Realtors Community Relations Committee’s project was to collect Easter Baskets to benefit the Child Advocacy Center. The members chipped in together and were able to gather 200 beautiful baskets filled with goodies for all ages, from tots to teens. Lunch&Learn Training

Recently some present supporters of the CAC fund raising efforts attended a luncheon to get an update on the work of the CAC, receive thanks for their past efforts, and were presented with details on why their on-going and continued help is needed in the future. Several CAC staff members attended multi-disciplinary training at the National Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama. Those who participated talked about the insights and highlights of their learning experience, along with new ideas and new programs which may help them in their work at the CAC.

Speakers were representatives from the law enforcement agencies that assign staff here (MPD, MCSO, and PPD) who were invited to speak on “What Law Enforcement Needs from the Other Team members at the CAC To Make Our Work Effective.”
