letter from the president Heal. Educate. Lead. Provide. With this annual report, I have the fortunate opportunity to reflect upon all that was achieved by the PA Foundation and the profession on the whole in 2010. It was a whirlwind year that provided a glimpse into the future of what the PA Foundation is truly capable. The PA Foundation’s collaboration with Chevron Corporation, Epiphany Community Health Outreach Services in Houston and the Baylor College of Medicine PA program came to fruition in February with an official launch to serve the Burmese refugee population in Houston, a highly underserved community that deeply needed assistance as they assimilated into their new culture. Through a grant from Chevron, the PA Foundation coordinated collaboration between the Baylor PA program and ECHOS. The flame was ignited and soon, other local agencies, public health providers, schools and more wanted to take part in the effort. All told, over 600 members of the Burmese population were provided services. The Baylor PA students and Burmese health navigators were essential in making this happen. Thanks to our donors, the PA Foundation was able to fund grants in 17 states around the country. From Washington State to Ohio, and Texas to Maine, your generosity is helping PAs make a difference in the delivery of health care. In an ever-changing climate, together we are proving that PAs are critical in meetings the needs of individuals and patients who need it most. I extend a special welcome to Ellen L. Woods, the PA Foundation’s new Executive Director. Ms. Woods joined us in May 2010 and has already introduced fresh ideas and enthusiasm that will drive the PA Foundation forward. You will begin to see many of these ideas implemented in 2011 and beyond, such as revitalizing the student scholarship program by increasing the amount of these scholarships to offset the rising cost of PA education, enabling the PA Foundation to make an even greater impact on the profession. The PA profession continues to grow and blossom. With a projected growth of 39 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts physician assistants will be the second fastest growing health profession in the next decade. I can’t wait to see what more our future holds and I hope you will come along with us for the ride. As always, thank you for your investment in the PA Foundation and your confidence in the work we do for the PA profession.

key highlights >> 4th Annual Golf Outing in Memory of Captain Sean Grimes

The Picatinny Federal Credit Union held its fourth annual golf outing in the fall of 2010 in memory of Army Captain Sean Grimes, who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Captain Grimes’ mother, Mary, is a retired employee of the credit union. The event raised more than $7,500 for the Captain Sean Grimes scholarship fund. Grimes graduated from the Interservice PA program at Fort Sam, Houston, Texas, in 2003 and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously.

>> Memorial/Tributes Program Launched

The PA Foundation launched a memorial and tributes giving program in 2010, enabling donors to honor someone in their lives. These gifts are a way to recognize a birthday, graduation or special accomplishment, or a way to remember a lost loved one. When memorial and tribute gifts are made, PAF sends a note to extend your wishes and let that special individual or family know a gift was made in their honor/memory.

>> Host City Prevention Campaign (renamed in 2011 as the Caring for Communities Grant)

The 2010 Host City Prevention Campaign grant recipient was the South Georgia Farmworker Health Project, established and managed by the Emory PA program, and led by PAs and PA students. The initiative uses a mobile outreach model to provide free outpatient care to approximately 1,700 migrant and seasonal farm workers and their dependents during their time in southern Georgia counties. This population constitutes a medically underserved and impoverished patient base. The program has a substantial impact on other communities, individual PA and MD volunteers and PA students.

accomplishments of the pa profession >> A PAramount Evening: Celebrating those who Heal, Educate, Lead, and Provide

lead

In conjunction with AAPA’s 38th Annual PA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, PAF held its inaugural fundraising dinner to celebrate and honor AAPA PAragon and PA Foundation award recipients. Nearly 400 PAs and supporters of the PA profession came out to support these accomplished individuals. Throughout the evening, award winners shared stories and wisdom gained during the countless hours of committed service to their patients and the PA profession. Attendees walked away from the event inspired and motivated—hoping to make a difference back in their own communities.

The event was a huge success in bringing awareness to the work of the PA Foundation and its impact on the profession, in addition to providing a venue to thank its many devoted supporters. The second annual PAramount Evening awards dinner will be held Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in Las Vegas.

>> PA Redirects Book Royalties to Benefit PAF

>> PA Foundation/Baylor College of Medicine PA Program Community Health Navigator Program

A unique collaboration came to life in January of 2010—one between the PA Foundation, the Baylor College of Medicine Physician Assistant Program, the Epiphany Community Health Outreach Services and the recently arrived Burmese refugee community—a collaboration generously funded by Chevron Corporation. Six individuals from the Burmese refugee community were employed by ECHOS and quickly trained as Community Health Navigators to accompany PA students from the Baylor PA program into the communities housing newly arrived Burmese.

PA Dan Thibodeau, co-author of Physician Assistant Exam Review: Pearls of Wisdom, redirected 100 percent of his royalties to the PA Foundation. A long-time supporter and leader of the PA Foundation, Dan understands the impact that the Foundation is having on the future of the profession.

>> First PA Elected to Congress

Throughout 2010, with the assistance of the PA students, applications for access to public health care services were successfully completed for 620 adults and 247 children. The Burmese navigators, partnering with the PA students, accompanied members of the Burmese refugee community on more than 1,000 medical visits.

In a sweeping victory in November, PA Karen Bass, a Democrat, was elected to represent California’s 33rd district in the U.S. House of Representatives with 86 percent of the vote. Bass made headlines in 2008 by becoming the first African-American woman to serve as Speaker of the California Assembly. Before she began her political career, Bass was a clinical PA who practiced for nearly a decade in the nation’s largest trauma center, Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

“ As physician assistants, we are compassionate individuals that cannot turn our backs to the disadvantaged, especially in our own communities. By becoming involved, we can relieve some of the responsibilities of the government as well as the hardship that the Burmese face on a daily basis. In turn, we will learn about an interesting culture and make new bonds with other nations. By stepping up to help, we are setting an example for the medical community that may bring forward a more positive future for all encountered.

Special Recognition The R.K. Pedersen endowment was established in May 2005 through a donation made by Don and Kathy Pedersen's Family Foundation in memory of Don's father who was involved internationally throughout his business career. The Pedersens have been physician assistants for the past 30 years—Don as professor and director of the University of Utah PA Program, and Kathy as a primary care PA at the Community Health Clinics of Salt Lake City. The PA Foundation is extremely grateful for the family's continued support of the R.K. Pedersen Global Outreach endowment. Read more about the 2010 recipient, Jennifer Wall, on page 7.
