Translation Memory Translation memory, or TM, is a database that stores previously translated strings or paragraph-like units that can then be reused by translators when translating newer strings. Translation Memory stores the source string and its corresponding translation in language pairs. When properly used, translation memory saves time and money, but also ensures linguistic consistency throughout a translation.

SMARTLING’S TRANSLATION MEMORY SMARTLING’S TRANSLATION MEMORY

HELP CENTER

Smartling adds translations to the project’s translation memory as soon as they are saved by a translator. This means that a translation does not need to be published to be displayed in the Translation Interface and leveraged by a translator. Smartling doesn’t just display 100% matches but also surfaces imperfect matches or fuzzy matches above 50%. The fuzzy match score is based on the similarity between the current segment and a segment in the translation memory. For example two segments that are different by just a few characters will likely have a score in the 90% range. In addition to Translation Memory sourced from within your project, Smartling lets you import (.TMX files), group, share, and export Translation Memory.

Build a Translation Memory

Smartling lets you share, import, and group Translation Memories within a project.

5

HELP CENTER

Shared Translation Memory

The first step to leveraging translation memory is building your translation memory from existing projects: the larger the source of your translation memory, the better the quality of new translations, and at a lower cost: ●

Share translation memory from existing project in your account, even if the project has been archived.

Import your translation memory from a .tmx file for past translations handled outside of Smartling.

Group projects: Group translation memories from several projects into a single unit, which can be more easily shared. For example, you might create groups around a specific aspect of your business, for example marketing, product, legal, etc.

SmartMatch for a better turnaround

Once you’ve selected the translation memory source, using SmartMatch settings, you can control the content workflow for different match types.

7

HELP CENTER

SmartMatch

As an example, if Smartling detects a string that has a 100% text match but is a variant, you can have that string skip a part of or the entire workflow and go straight to publication or download, but if a string has 100% matching text and a different markup, you may want it to go to an edit or review step in your workflow.

8

HELP CENTER 100% match with variants matching - This is the most exacting type of match: Smartling looks for matches where the variant (a unique identifier for a string used to differentiate it from another identical string, commonly found in key-based file formats and often used to allow identical strings to be translated differently) for the strings are the same and applies the workflow setting to the matches.

SmartMatch Settings 100% match without variants matching - When the variant metadata is different but the content is identical, Smartling recognizes a 100% match and applies the workflow settings of your choice.

100% match without whitespace matching - Although there is a difference in the whitespace, Smartling ignores the difference and applies your workflow setting.

100% translation text match without markup matching Although there are differences in the HTML markup between two strings with identical content, Smartling ignores the markup differences and applies the workflow setting of your choice.

Penalties for better quality

Use penalty settings to improve the quality of your translation and Translation Memory.

10

HELP CENTER

Translation Memory penalties You can elect to apply a penalty of between 1 and 5% to any of the matches found between the shared project or imported file and incoming strings. The match score displayed to the translator reflects the penalty.

Applying a penalty can improve the quality of your translation by forcing the translator to pay more attention to the proposed translation in the event of a match. This is particularly useful when importing a file from a legacy translation whose quality or relevance you are unsure of or if you elect to share translation memory from a project with the same content used in a different context. For example, you may choose to share translation memories between a Marketing project and a Knowledge Base project and apply a penalty to the reference Translation Memory. Even though the wording may at times be identical, the context may be quite different, and you’ll need the translators to double check the translation.

Translation Memory and cost saving

One of the major advantages of sharing and/or importing translation memory is that it can significantly decrease the cost of your translation.

Fuzzy Matches

HELP CENTER

The higher the percentage match for a string the less you pay per word for that string. The more high matches you have the less you’ll pay overall for translation. Consider the following two strings: Number of Words

Match Score

Rate per Words

Total

Get started with localization today!

5

0%

$0.18

$0.90

Get started with localization now!

5

92%

$0.11

$0.55

Smartling applies an industry standard percentage reduction to the original rate per word depending on the match score bracket a string falls into. Whenever you approve new content for translation, go to Settings > Fuzzy Match to get an estimate of how many of those words will fall into each particular match score bracket.

HELP CENTER

Words Under Management

Whenever you import a new translation memory file, the number of translated words in that file will be counted and billed against your Words Under Management. That said, you may find that the savings you’ll see as a result of fuzzy matching in translation more than compensates for the increase in your Words Under Management.
