Oh, San Francisco, du gibst einem 1000 Gründe, sich sofort in dich zu verlieben! Wenn man sich zum Beispiel frühmorgens in einen Cable Car setzt, langsam durch den Dunst der Fisherman’s Wharf die Hyde Street hochtuckert und sich auf Höhe California & Powell der Nebel gelichtet hat und den Blick auf die Bay Bridge freigibt. Oder wenn einem eine Verkäuferin aus Florenz mitten auf dem Ferry Plaza Market den weltbesten Donut verkauft. Der Duft von grilliertem Krabbenfleisch am Pier 39; die Stille im Golden Gate Park, die kurz darauf von lauter Musik wieder zerrissen wird, wenn sich sonntags eine Menschentraube im Park trifft, nur um einfach ein wenig zu tanzen! Spätestens wenn man sich downtown ein Bier gönnt und von einer Flamenco-Live-Show überrascht wird oder auf einer Radtour am Strand der Golden Gate Bridge entgegenradelt, die im Sonnenuntergang orange leuchtet, wird einem bewusst, dass der Journalist Herb Caen wohl recht hatte, als er sagte: «Sollte ich eines Tages in den Himmel kommen, werde ich mich umschauen und sagen: Nicht dass es schlecht wäre, aber San Francisco ist’s nicht.»
Oh, San Francisco: there are just so many reasons to fall instantly in love with you! Like climbing aboard the cable car at Fisherman’s Wharf early in the morning and crawling up Hyde Street and out of the mist, so that by the time you get to California & Powell there’s a fabulous view of the Bay Bridge and more. Or the doughnut woman from Florence who sells you the world’s finest doughnut in the middle of Ferry Plaza Market. The scent of grilled crabmeat at Pier 39. The sheer tranquillity of Golden Gate Park. And even the loud music that tears it apart on a Sunday morning when folks gather there just to dance. So by the time you treat yourself to a downtown beer and are surprised to be offered a live flamenco show, too, or take a cycle ride along the beach towards the Golden Gate Bridge, which blazes orange in the setting sun, you’ll realise just how right journalist Herb Caen had been when he said: “One day if I do go to heaven, I’ll look around and say: it ain’t bad, but it ain’t San Francisco.”
