HeartCode ACLS Systems Administrator’s Guide This guide contains information about installing and using the AHA Guidelines 2005 compliant HeartCode ACLS Systems. It will begin with installation instructions and then continue with a description of general use. You can find the latest updates, FAQs and documentation here: www.laerdal-sophus.dk
Installing HeartCode ACLS Systems System overview The HeartCode ACLS system consists of two elements:

Installation overview It is recommended that you start by installing the License server on a dedicated server. See the License server Administrator’s Guide for information on how to install and use the License server. You can then proceed with installing HeartCode ACLS on one or more PCs, and configure them to use the License server.

In the end a PC must be identified as the Skills Station. The skills manikin should be connected to this PC.

Installation steps 1. Insert CD and start setup.exe 2. Select the installation path and go to “Next” 3. Select the option to connect to a License server a. After selecting this option, go to the “Advanced” menu and select “Connect directly to a license server” b. Then type in the IP address of the License server c. Click OK and then go to “Next” 4. The installation program will detect whether you have an up-to-date version of Adobe Reader and Flash Player installed and install them if needed. Go to “Next” 5. HeartCode ACLS will now be installed and ready to use 6. Identify the PC to be used as Skills Station and connect the manikin to this PC.

Verifying HeartCode ACLS Systems setup Be aware that the verification described here uses up one license, so be sure to use an actual username. * To verify that everything works, please follow these steps: 1. Create a user in the License server and assign a license to this user 2. Go to a PC which with HeartCode ACLS installed 3. Log in as the user and start the introduction scenario 4. After passing the introduction scenario please verify that you got a green checkmark 5. Log out 6. Go to a different PC with HeartCode ACLS 7. Log in as the same user and verify that you can see the green checkmark and that you can still access the scenarios **

Working with HeartCode ACLS Systems Before you start The following information about using HeartCode ACLS Systems requires that the system has been installed and is up and running correctly.
Administrating HeartCode ACLS with the License server It is important to understand that the License server acts as the central user database where all the users and their progress scores are kept. The HeartCode ACLS program connects to the License server to obtain user and license information. The License server has its own separate manual. Please read the separate manual before using the License server. The following gives a quick overview with excerpts from the License server manual.
License server overview The LS has several purposes: o It manages and distributes licenses in a multi-user environment o It can be used to create users and for basic user administration o It reports American Heart Association (AHA) related activity over the Internet to a central Laerdal server
Installing licenses Before you can start to use HeartCode ACLS, you must install licenses into the License server. 1. Open the Laerdal License server from the start menu 2. Click the “+” under “License overview” 3. Type or paste in all the keys, each on a separate line 4. Select “Online” and “Next” 5. A window should open and tell you that your key has been activated

User creation / administration You can create new users in the License server and manage basic user information such as changing their passwords or granting them access to new licenses. Steps to create a new user and give them access to a license: 1. Open the Laerdal license server from the start menu 2. Click the “+” under the Users list 3. Type in the user’s login a. The password will be the same as the user name by default. 4. Select which licenses the user should have access to a. To do this you must check the box next to each license. Usually all licenses must be selected
HeartCode ACLS Systems example of use The steps below describe a typical scenario of using HeartCode ACLS.

1. The administrator is informed about a new user, who needs to complete the ACLS certification 2. The admin then accesses the License server and creates a new user. He makes sure to select the proper licenses that the user should have access to. 3. The user is now told what his login information is and then goes to one of the PCs with HeartCode ACLS installed. He starts the program and logs in when prompted. 4. The first time the user logs in to the program, he must enter his personal information. 5. The user now completes Part 1 of the ACLS certification. This part is the cognitive part and can be done on any PC with HeartCode ACLS installed. 6. The user then logs out and then goes to a PC connected to a skills test manikin where he logs in with the same login. 7. He then accesses Part 2 and continues his certification by performing and passing the Ventilation and CPR skills tests on the manikin. 8. After the user passes both parts of the ACLS certification program, he prints the Part 1 and Part 2 certificates which he keeps as proof. 9. Reports will now automatically be sent from the License server to Laerdal Medical AS. These reports then enable Laerdal Medical AS to issue a Course completion card. Alternatively the institution can do this by using its own procedures.

Recertification in HeartCode ACLS Systems If the administrator runs the recertification report in the License server and discovers that a user is due for recertification, he should do the following: 1. Open the License server and find the login of the user in question 2. He should then create a new user with a similar login Example: If the user’s previous login was “SmithPaul”, then the new login should be “SmithPaul2” 3. Tell the user that he must recertify and what his new login is
Advanced technical information Upgrading to HeartCode ACLS Guidelines 2005 There are two possible cases when upgrading HeartCode ACLS to a newer version.
Case 1: HeartCode was installed before 2004 This means that you are still using a program called the Admin Module to manage licenses and users. If this is the case you can treat the upgrade as a completely new installation. It is likely that the new system will not work on the old HeartCode laptop shipped from Laerdal Medical and you will have to allocate new hardware and IT support.
Case 2: HeartCode was installed after 2004 This means that you are already familiar with the current system setup and are using the License server to manage licenses and users. In this case you should: o Go to http://www.laerdal-sophus.dk to obtain the latest License server o Uninstall the old License server and install the new version o Verify that everything looks ok o Now go to each machine with HeartCode ACLS installed and update it to the newest version. Make that they are still configured to talk to the same license server o Once finished, test that everything still works SP4222 rev C

Change License server address If your License server changes address, you will need to configure the HeartCode program to point to the new location. You can change the License server settings by: 1. Logging into Windows as an admin 2. Start HeartCode ACLS 3. Go to the License menu 4. Under the Advanced settings you can change the IP address
Alternatively you can change the address in the registry under: HKLM\Software\Laerdal Sophus\License server\
Creating users from the HeartCode program Normally it is desired that users can not create their own logins. However this can be changed by adding the following line to the file “options.txt” found in the folder \Program Files\HeartCode ACLS\heartcode\ : maycreateusers:
Backup All user and course data is stored in the License server. To perform backups all that is needed is to backup the License server installation folder. The manikin raw performance data* is stored locally on the Skills test PC. If you wish to back up these as well, then you must also back up the Skills test installation folder.

Troubleshooting No connection to License server Please check these items before calling support o Has the License server been installed correctly • Is the service running? • Are there licenses available in the License server? • If yes, have these licenses been made available to a user either by giving access while creating the user or by creating a license policy? o Is there a Firewall blocking the License server? • The License server must be able to communicate with HeartCode ACLS on port 56246
Certificates can’t be accessed from HeartCode ACLS This is most likely because the License server does not have Internet access or access to the Laerdal report server. The AHA requires that reports are made every 30 days. Please go to the advanced options and select “Report now”. If the report status is not updated, then there is a connection problem. Check the log file for more detail.
