Our Core Values

In order to achieve our statement of purpose, we embrace the following core values: GLORIFY GOD — We seek to glorify God in all activities and relationships as well as in the use of the resources God has given us. Our Christian faith in God is woven into the fabric of LCA, its classes, clubs and activities, rehearsals, performances, practices and games. PARTNERSHIP — We view education as a partnership between faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and board members. LCA is a community where we work together and encourage one another to achieve our individual and common goals. Open communication is central to this partnership. TRUTH — We acknowledge absolute truth, as revealed in God’s Word, and its relevance to our lives. LCA’s teachers and staff are committed to helping students discover the truth, to think critically in the classroom and in real life.

EXCELLENCE — Continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence underlies all that we do — academically, creatively and athletically. It is our goal to help each student, faculty and staff achieve his or her very best.  HONESTY — Our relationships and academic performance are based on honesty and fairness. LCA is a safe place. Our work is safe from being copied. There is trust between the students and faculty. We compete fairly and with integrity.

Greetings from The Head of School

Dear Friends of LCA,

I

n my first few months at LCA, I can already tell that this is a generous community. Evidence of your gifts of time, talent, and treasures can be seen in every hallway, student, and Faculty member. The new Cross Worship and Performing Arts Center shows the commitment this community had in providing a space for corporate worship and displaying student talent. The hallways are filled with over 80 recipients of scholarships from people that believe in Christian education and the classrooms are filled with talented Faculty members who have been encouraged to pursue their academic passions. I can tell this commitment to generosity and investing in the next generation is a longstanding tradition at LCA, beginning with the founders of Boston Christian High School in 1946 and continuing today with the names in this report. The stories I have already heard of the remarkable work LCA alumni are doing in the world shows me this is an investment worth making. LCA students are getting an education that helps them brighten the world. As you read through this report, my hope is that you would see your part in helping these world-changers and you would sense the gratitude I have for your generosity.

The new Cross Worship and Performing Arts Center shows the commitment this community had in providing a space for corporate worship and displaying student talent.

Lexington Christian Academy also has a long-standing tradition of being led by men and women who deeply love Jesus Christ, His Person, His Purposes in the world and His People. I want to express my heartfelt thank you to the Lord for His provision of Christine Metzger as LCA’s Interim Head of School this past year. She has left this Academy in fine order and helped me come on board in a seamless transition. Her service to our community is a testimony to her dedication to the school and your collegiality in welcoming her as the servant leader the Board was looking for in this interim. My wife Kathe and I have personally been the recipients of your warm New England welcome as we made the transition from Memphis to Boston. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you in the years to come and partnering in furthering God’s kingdom by educating young men and women in the context of the historic Christian Faith. My sincere gratitude,

Timothy Russell Head of School Le xington Christian Academy

Faculty Grants 2012 – 2013

The Sam & June Schultz Grant

The Sam and June Schultz Grant is given to allow a faculty member to participate in a conference or workshop. Priority is given to events that enhance faith and learning. This year the grant was given to Jeremy Alexander to take two LCA students to the Symposium on Worship at Calvin College. “I was able to attend the Symposium on Worship at Calvin College in January 2013 because of The Sam and June Schultz Grant. I was also able to take 2 students with me, Rachel Gamelin ’14 and Elizabeth Nalunga ’15. We spent several days listening to workshops on the role of worship in the Christian life and were able to participate in several worship experiences with other participants. One of the highlights was the ability to spend an entire day in a workshop designed specifically for leading worship in a secondary school. This experience was both encouraging and challenging to the students who attended, and has the ability to influence and grow how we do worship and chapel at LCA.” —Jeremy Alexander, LCA Chaplain and Bible Teacher

The Lawrence-Swallow Grant

The VanderBrug Family Grant

The Lawrence Swallow Grant is given to help a faculty member participate in a conference or other professional event that is related to his or her field that will enhance his or her teaching. This year the grant was given to Kaitlyn DeJong to attend FETC 2013, an educational technology conference.

The VanderBrug Family Grant is given to promote the development of “outside the box” thinking. The grant provides funding for faculty members who dream of pursuing ideas that link to the classroom curriculum, or interface with the LCA mission, and for which there is not conventional funding. Lori Johnson and Jim Feenstra were given the grant to create “iSnackIT” training sessions for their collegues.

“Blogging is a fabulous way to have students engaged in discussion beyond the allotted class time and with current technology students can blog from any device with access to the Internet. I learned to use blogging effectively, higher level questions should be asked and students should have a choice in the questions they respond to. After returning from FETC I created a blog for my Algebra 2 classroom where the students could discuss the essential questions for each unit. I incorporated faith infused questions in the discussion as well. Each student had an opportunity for his or her voice to be heard. The discussions occurring had depth and allowed the students to give each other feedback. The knowledge I acquired at FETC helped to make blogging in my classroom a huge success! As a school that supports a one-to-one laptop (technology) program I believe it is important as educators that we take advantage of these tools in the classroom. At FETC I learned about many incredible resources for myself and my students that exist on the web. If we are educating children for the future, we must embrace technology. At FETC I heard an expert in Educational neuroscience talk about the importance of technology in education. Since students now have the internet they have endless information at their fingertips. Because of this, our brain is changing, rather than memorizing massive amounts of information we must instead teach our brain to learn how to find and use the information. As educators we must recognize this change and be willing to change our teaching to fit the new needs of students.” —Kaitlyn DeJong, LCA Math Teacher

Head of School Report 2013

Lori and Jim first attended a conference to obtain a broader understanding of the technology being used in schools across the country. They were exposed to a vast number of technology tools that can allow students to learn more collaboratively, publish work, and think critically. The conference also gave them an opportunity to network with and learn from other schools who have adopted a 1:1 personal device program. “This conference allowed us to have three full days of insight into the present and future of education as it relates to 21st century learning. It inspired us to continue to improve our own teaching, train students in how to use the tools of their future, and continue to access professional development through technology that we can use year-round.” —Lori Johnson, LCA English Teacher

Letter from The Cross Foundation

Dear Lexington Christian Academy,

T

he Trustees of The Cross Foundation would like to congratulate the entire LCA community on the successful completion of The Cross Worship and Performing Arts Center. We applaud the vision and faith of the LCA board almost ten years ago who took the giant step of literally laying the foundation for the facility we dedicate today, and the current board for stepping out in faith in uncertain times. We fully support the mission of Lexington Christian Academy. We believe that in order to “educate young men and women in the arts and sciences in the context of a complete commitment to the historic Christian faith,” it is important to have an appropriate place for corporate worship and also a place where students can explore, experience and grow in their God-given talents in the arts. It is our prayer that over the years all who perform in this space, or attend performances here, be reminded by The Cross on the wall and the name of the facility that all these talents are a gift from our God to be used for His glory and that His greatest gift of all is His saving grace made possible by The Cross of Christ. It is The Cross of Christ for which The Cross Foundation takes its name and mission, and it is therefore The Cross of Christ for which this facility is named. Sincerely,

Robert A. Lawrence, On behalf of The Cross Foundation Trustees

Your Investment — Today’s Students, Tomorrow’s Leaders The LCA Academy Fund is what helps make our great Academy excellent. Your investment of any

amount directly impacts the Christian education of today’s students, helping to shape the leaders they will become throughout the world. We are grateful for the thousands of people who have chosen to partner with LCA.

Pursuing Excellence

LCA seniors are provided with many opportunities and resources to add a more rigorous academic approach to their studies. In all of these programs, seniors are given more freedom and more responsibility so that they will be well prepared for their endeavors in a university environment.  They may choose to complete independent work, such as the Advanced Senior Research, which is conducted with close consultation of a faculty member. Andrew Stutzman ’13 (pictured) focused his senior research project on integrating optical interferometry for precise measurement. Andrew worked with researchers at Draper Labs on this project. His work included the stabilization of optics and a measurement of gravity analyzed with the use of MATLAB software.

Facult y Enrichment

Inspired teaching from intelligent, dedicated faculty is what makes an LCA education so special. It’s not just a passion for teaching subjects, but for teaching students. LCA’s distinguished faculty members are known for their pursuit of excellence in and out of the classroom. It is the skill with which LCA teachers integrate faith, learning and living that distinguishes LCA from other private and public schools.

“In addition to the knowledge gained from attending these seminars, I find it stimulating to spend a day reflecting on how I can improve as a teacher. In addition, it is encouraging to spend time with colleagues who share common interests and concerns. It has caused me to refocus my goals and to remind me of why I love teaching. I came back from the seminar energized, refreshed and encouraged.”

Breadth of Curriculum

LCA has a rich array of courses including advanced placement courses. We have academic competitions, independent studies, senior internships and Interim. LCA has vibrant music, art and theatre programs. The majority of our students participate in our athletic program. All these things along with Spiritual Emphasis Week and Veritas help make LCA what it is today.

— Donna Williams, LCA faculty member for over 30 years

“I am thankful to you and to God that I will be able to continue at LCA because of this scholarship. I will strive to glorify God through hard work and trusting in Him as I do. Please pray that I make the most of what you have sacrificed for me, and that I can give back, somehow for such a great gift.” — LCA Junior

Scholarships

Technology

To attract and retain a growing body of diverse, qualified, and ambitious students, LCA continues to offer scholarships to make our Academy financially accessible. Since the admission process is rigorous and highly selective, students invited to enroll have already demonstrated academic merit. Access for many qualified students begins or ends with their ability to afford tuition.

Technology allows our faculty and students to drive education through their creativity. LCA has a 1:1 device program, with the 8th and 12th graders receiving iPads last year. Some of these iPads were used in an Interim filmmaking course taught by filmmaker and Calvin College professor, Brian Fuller.

During Interim 2013, twelve LCA students and staff visited New Mexico for a service and photography project. The students took over 30,000 photos as they visited a Navajo ranch, New Mexico parks, and aided the Rehoboth Christian School by taking photos for their “Destination Rehoboth” project.
