January 2016 Dear Parent or Guardian, WELCOME TO CAMP TENDERFOOT! Thank you for registering for Camp Tenderfoot this summer! We look forward to creating a memorable summer for your child. This letter outlines some of the general guidelines for camp. You will also be receiving a “Monday Morning” letter when you check in on Monday with more specific information for your camper’s particular week. For those new to our camp, please attend our Camps Orientation (course # 36410) on Thurs. June 16, 7-8:30pm at the East Ave. Park amphitheater. Overview: Camp is an all-outdoors-all-the-time experience located on the Greenbelt Trail in the Hayward hills at the 140 acre East Ave. Community Park: 3221 East Ave. Each day, it is essential that campers are prepared with: - comfortable, closed-toe hiking shoes, outdoor clothes with a jacket or sweatshirt - sunscreen - water - a healthy snack - a bagged lunch (except on the lunch cookout day: Wednesday) - a labeled backpack NOTE: All lost and found items will be kept for a week following each camp and then donated after the second week. If your child uses an inhaler, please be sure your camper brings it each and every program day. He/she will not be able to attend camp without it. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt during the week as part of the program. More “What to bring” is attached. Monday Morning: Please help us speed up Monday morning check-in by coming to camp at the designated check-in time with a completed emergency form for each child, each week. (Included. Also, see www.haywardrec.org for camp forms, maps, and policies.) Any allergies may be described on this form and given to your counselor on the first day. Your courteous driving is greatly appreciated.

- When parking, please use the parking lot at the top of the hill as a first option. Look for our parking lot flag. Legal street parking is an alternative. Special Needs or Requests: We need at least 10 days advance notice for special needs and requests for accommodation. Please download the “Access for All” application from www.haywardrec.org and return to Kerrilyn Ely, Rec. Superintendent, [email protected]. Camper Group Placements: In the interest of smooth first-day operations, we do not take any requests for camper group changes on Mon. morning. The Directors place campers in groups by age and work hard to balance the ratio between boys and girls in each group in advance. Also note that the groups only really spend a few hours on Mon. apart, so there are still plenty of chances to play with each other. Camper groupings will only be taken into consideration if requested by email at least one week in advance to [email protected] in the following format: 1) Separate request for each different week; one grouping request per group. 2) Campers must be in a similar age group and in the same camp (i.e. Tenderfoot); 3) In the subject line, please state “Camper Group Request – (insert camp name), Week of (insert camp week)”; 4) In the body of the email, list the names and ages of the campers who request to be grouped together. The Directors will do the best they can to group them together. Rainy Day Camp Cancellation: “Rainy Day Guidelines” are attached. The District may cancel camp for any significant weather situations to ensure the safety of campers and staff. You will be contacted should this happen so please ensure your contact information is accurate. We look forward to providing a safe and adventurous summer for your camper! Look for a survey to be emailed to you at the end of your week of camp. We want to continuously meet your summer camp needs with excellence, so please tell us what you think of the registration, check-in, parking, staff, and program elements when you respond. And THANK YOU for supporting East Ave. Camps! Jennifer “Pickleweed” Koney, Camps Supervisor [email protected]; (510) 881-6723; cell phone: (510) 750-3393

East Ave. Camp Rainy Day Guidelines Since Camp is an all-outdoor activity, weather conditions sometimes impair our ability to hold camp. The District has the discretion to cancel camp at any time for any significant weather situations to ensure the safety and well being of campers and staff. The following are guidelines we use in assessing whether camp is cancelled or not due to weather conditions. Camp will continue in the event of a light rain/drizzle at the time camp begins. The tree canopy in the canyon and in the upper tree groves provides some protection from the rain. Please prepare your camper for wet conditions. However, if it is down pouring and/or thunder storming or if thunderstorms are predicted at the time camp begins, the Camp Supervisor will cancel camp for the day. Please do not bring your camper to camp. Camp will continue the following day, weather permitting. If it begins to rain heavily and/or thunder storming during the camp day, the Camp Supervisor will cancel camp for the day. Parents will be called using the emergency contact phone number on file to pick up their campers within 30-60 minutes. Camp will continue the following day, weather permitting. If questions, please contact the Camp Supervisor: Jennifer “Pickleweed” Koney at: (510) 8816723, (510) 750-3393 (cell phone), or the District office at (510) 881-6700. EAST AVE. EAST AVE. CAMPS – “What to Wear and What to Bring” List Camp Tenderfoot EVERYDAY: Be sure that every day your camper wears comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing for the weather. Everyday your camper should also have a water bottle, a lunch (unless it’s cookout day), a snack, extra sunscreen for re-application, and a backpack to put it all in. And of course a GREAT ATTITUDE!!!!!! MONDAY: Since this is our first day just bring what’s listed on the EVERYDAY list. TUESDAY: On this day be sure to pack extra water for your camper since we will be up top in the sun most of the day. WEDNESDAY: No lunch is needed for today since the counselors will be preparing food for your camper, yet please still pack a snack. In addition please bring a reusable cup, plate, fork, and spoon. Napkins are also essential for those messy eaters. THURSDAY: For the first part of the day just have your campers bring what’s on the EVERYDAY list. When you return with your Tenderfooter(s) for our family potluck, please bring the food (or drink) item that is listed on your Monday Morning Letter. We ask that everyone contributes so that there’s enough food for everyone. FRIDAY: Have your campers come either with swimsuits to change into or have them come with their swimsuits under their hiking clothes as we will be hiking the first part of the day and running through the sprinklers for the second half. Therefore please also pack a towel, extra sunscreen, and shoes they’re allowed to get wet.

NOTE: All lost and found items will be kept for a week following each camp and then donated after the second week. So please check for lost items within a week of your camp experience!
