Train to Teach with the Fylde Coast Teaching School Entry Entry Requirements Requirements • An Honours degree 2.2 or above in the specialism to be taught, (degrees in Economics, Engineering, etc. may be considered as a basis for teaching Maths ) although a 3rd class honours would be considered with appropriate experience. • Your degree needs to consist of at least 50% of modules in your chosen specialism. A Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course may be necessary to enhance your degree. • Grade C or above in GCSE core subjects of English Language and Maths plus a C grade in at least 2 other GCSE subjects or their equivalent. • Good grades at A level in the specialist subject to be taught plus further good A level grades. • Effective communication skills in spoken and written English. • Up to 10 days recent and relevant work experience in a Secondary School environment. • 2 written references, one of which must be academic in nature. References will delay applications, so get them early! • Successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Professional Skills Tests.

What qualifications do I gain? On successful completion of the programme you will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This qualification allows you to teach in all schools including maintained schools, academies and free schools. You do not attend a University at all as our course is all about being in school and learning on the job, so you do not gain a PGCE on this programme.

What age range will I teach? Your main Placements will be in both Key Stage 3 [11-14] and Key Stage 4 [14-16] at two contrasting schools on the Fylde Coast. However, you will be given a personalised training flightpath to include a minimum of 10 additional enrichment days. These days will be spent in various settings including Sixth Form, Primary, SEN schools, Pupil Referral Units and Independent/Private schools. Your training experience will be personalised to ensure you make rapid progress during your time on the programme.

When and where? Your training will start at the beginning of September, and you will be placed in contrasting schools on the Fylde Coast. The programme follows an academic calendar so you will have school holidays, and you will be able to negotiate the schools you are placed in based on the experiences you bring.

What about the Theory? Despite not having to attend University classes, you will spend every Friday studying the theories that underpin teaching and learning. You will explore how children learn, and develop a toolkit of strategies to ensure you can create an inclusive, safe and successful learning environment for your students .

How will I be assessed? To be awarded QTS you will have to show by the end of the programme that you meet all the Teachers’ Standards. Assessment for this is based on lesson observations and the meeting of agreed targets set during learning conversations. You will be allocated a Subject Mentor on your placement, who will monitor your progress and support your development. You will have half-termly meetings with the Head of Initial Teacher Training to map your journey and to celebrate successes or discuss any concerns.

Finance Our teacher training programme costs £6000 for the year. You can apply for a loan to cover these costs via Student Finance England, and they can also advise you on Maintenance Loans and help you with childcare as you embark on your full-time programme of study. We will provide you with the evidence you need to provide to the Council for reductions in Council Tax. Depending on your degree classifications and subject, you may also be entitled to a Bursary of up to £25, 000 - please see the our website(www.fctsa.co.uk) for further information.

How do I apply? Applications for initial teacher training (ITT) courses are made via a system administered by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). More information about this can be found at: www.ucas.com/how-it-all-works/teacher-training “My decision to join the Fylde Coast Teaching School to complete my SCITT was based on two main factors. Firstly, I am a hands-on individual who likes to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in to a challenge. Being in school from the first week has allowed me to thrive and develop my skills and abilities quickly. Secondly, and from a more personal view point, the SCITT’s mission struck a chord with me. After growing up in Blackpool and now raising a family of my own in the town, my main drive as a teacher is to use my knowledge and skills to help make the Fylde Coast a safe and prosperous place to be a child and young adult." Adam Mason, SCITT Trainee 2015-16

"To teach is to touch a life forever." “Being a teacher is rewarding, exciting and constantly challenging.”
