Pi Day World Record Attempt On March 6, 2015 Harmony Science Academy attempted to establish a Guinness World Record for the largest mathematical symbol represented by students in a single gathering. Approximately 38 students and staff members were organized into the mathematical shape of “pi” which is formed as the shape surrounded by a circle of the remaining 261 students. Altogether, we expected to have between 300-400 stu-

dents involved in this project. The students were from the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Grades and were monitored by their teachers who participated in the picture as well. The official photographs documenting the world record attempts were taken by Fire Inspector Drew Washington of the Euless Fire Department from a height of 50 feet up the ladder of unit # 2. Public Education Coordinator Ken Rawlinson, Lieu-

tenant Michael Hanks and the entire “A” shift from Euless Fire Station #2 were instrumental in helping to set up and document the world record attempt. The fifty foot ladder represented the diameter of the circle formed by the students which had a circumference of 158 feet or 50 pi. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter. This year’s “Pi” Day occurred on March 14,

2015 and the date represents the most accurate depiction of the mathematical constant “pi” to be seen for the next 100 years. The date and time (3/14/15 9:26:53) will equal the first ten (10) digits of the unique number. Very few individuals will be alive to see this accuracy again in the year 2115. Pi is a very old number; it has been known for almost 4000 years. The ancient Babylonians and the ancient Egyptians estimated the constant to be between 3 and 3.1605 in 1650 B.C. The first recorded calculation of the constant was completed by Archimedes of Syracuse (287 –212 BC), one of the great ancient mathematicians by using the Pythagorean Theorem.
