Harford Day School Summer Reading Grades 4 & 5

2014

Summer, 2014 Dear Parents, One of the best things about summer is having more time to spend with your children. We know it is wonderful to watch them having fun, relaxing, and learning new things. Another way to enjoy your children is through books. Literary experiences are a great way to jump start conversations and to get to know your child in a different way. Summertime reading is also beneficial in helping to maintain literacy skills for the new academic year. The summer reading requirements for Fourth and Fifth grades are in this booklet. In addition, we included new fiction and nonfiction titles of interest, popular series, and read aloud titles. Reading aloud to children gives families shared experiences and long-lasting memories. A list of websites with great links to titles, authors, awards, games, and activities is also included. We encourage students to participate in the local public library’s summer reading program. It offers reading incentives, as well as fun activities and events. We hope you enjoy your summer, and we all look forward to seeing everyone in September. Sincerely, The Fourth and Fifth Grade Teachers Julie Watkins, School Librarian

Requirements for 4th Grade Summer Reading Each student is required to read THREE books. Two of the books should be fiction, and one should be nonfiction. Browse through this booklet, as well as bookstores and libraries, for recommendations. After you read each book, remember to complete the summary sheets in the back of this summer reading booklet.
