About the origin and nature of EMS…it began effecting shrimp stocks in China in 2009 and then Vietnam and Thailand, where it is estimated that country will produce only half of what it did last year. Most recently it has made it to Mexico, and it could spread to other areas too.

The problem is due to a unique strain of a relatively common bacterium. Water temperature and high acidity are part of the problem as is density of shrimp in farmed ponds. Extensive research has been done by Dr. Donald Lightner and his team at the University of Arizona who direct the World Organization for Animal Health, a reference laboratory for shrimp diseases. In fact, Dr. Lightner was just honored at an international meeting of the Global Aquaculture Alliance, attended by our vice president of seafood sustainability. However, even Dr. Lightner says that it is confusing… knowing the causes is only half the problem; figuring out how to prevent it is another.

Months ago, we began to hear about devastation to farmed shrimp in southeastern Asia, source of much of the world’s supply of these prized tasty morsels. The problem is a new disease, a bacterial infection that poses no threat to human health, but it kills shrimp as they grow…thus the name Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS). The effect is that supply will be lower and prices will be higher. Our suppliers’ farmed shrimp ponds in Thailand are involved, but not the Wegmans Belize shrimp nor the Wegmans European Union Certified Organic shrimp from Ecuador.
