INTRODUCTION It is perhaps difficult to pull together the various policies that constitute the backbone of a College and do so in a way that does not seem dry, procedural and written in the language of ‘compliance’, lexis in which the modern world seems remarkably fluent! These policies and statements are intended to provide the foundation stones that enable the Rendcomb community to prosper, and which offers each individual the support they need to develop as an individual at the College. The Handbook does not have every policy printed within it as some are regularly updated due to Government legislation. THE MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE OF THE COLLEGE The Headmaster always welcomes direct contact from parents although it is helpful for parents to understand the channels of communication available to them. Houseparents main responsibility is for overseeing the Pastoral development of pupils – day and boarding – affiliated to their Houses, while Academic Tutors, with support from the Head of Key Stages, are mainly responsible for the Academic progress. The school recognises that these two aspects do overlap and we recognise that it is important that they work together to ensure that each pupil feels supported and has the opportunities to fulfil their potential. In the first instance, parents are asked to facilitate the Academic Tutor as their initial point of contact, although if your child is a boarder it is also important to have communication with their Houseparent as well. As a matter of course both will communicate pastoral concerns to the Second Master and academic concerns initially to the appropriate Head of Key Stage and then possibly to the Deputy Head (Academic) who may feel that it would be helpful to convene a meeting; they in turn report concerns directly to the Headmaster. Matters financial should always be addressed to the College Bursar and the Finance Department. In the absence of the Headmaster, the Second Master takes responsibility for operational decisions pertaining to the College.

1. Mission Statement and Aims Our mission is to develop thoughtful, adventurous and academically ambitious young people who are life-long learners. We aim to prepare them with the character and skills to succeed in the ever-changing world after school. Our pupils have the freedom to experience, explore and enquire about the world around them. We aim to encourage independence and tolerance in a safe, caring community and magnificent natural environment. To achieve this we will:      

Promote a growth mind-set, where abilities can be developed through dedication and hard-work; Provide a co-curriculum that will challenge and support character development, leadership and teamwork; Encourage individualism, creativity and contribution to a nurturing and collaborative community; Engender physical, spiritual and mental well-being through a strong pastoral system; Prepare pupils for a life beyond school; Develop an appreciation and responsible attitude towards their environment and surroundings.

2. The College’s Authority Boarders are under the College's authority at all times during the term except when they are with their parents or guardians or clearly under their jurisdiction. Even where pupils are with their parents/guardians (on or off the school site or otherwise identifiable as a pupil of the College), they are expected to abide by the College’s regulations on behaviour. Day pupils are under the authority of the College whilst attending school and are also subject to the College's requirements regarding behaviour while travelling to and from College and at other times identifiable as a pupil of the College. No Rendcombian is expected to find themselves in a situation - in or out of College - where they would bring the College into disrepute. 3. Academic Expectations All pupils are issued with a Prep Diary at the start of the academic year. In this book, there are some expectations set out regarding classroom behaviour and Prep that are also included in the Pupil Handbook under Behaviour Policy. The classroom should be a stimulating environment in which everybody learns how to study, feels able to take part in discussion, shares views and gains knowledge and understanding of the subjects they are studying. To benefit from a constructive learning environment, there has to be an orderly, constructive atmosphere in which all members of a class can join in and develop a good working relationship with teachers and with each other.

To make sure that this happens, there are certain basic courtesies or conventions that all pupils need to follow:            

Arrive on time for lessons; Wait outside the classroom in an orderly fashion until the teacher arrives; Come to lessons properly equipped and ready to start work; Leave bags on the floor; Hand in homework and project work on time, unless excused by a letter from parents or house staff; Listen to and follow instructions without argument; Do not eat, drink or chew in class; Remain in your seat unless asked or given permission to move or unless a visitor enters the room, in which instance you should stand quietly until told to sit by your teacher; Raise your hand before answering or speaking, unless told to do otherwise; Treat others, their work and their equipment with respect; Do not drop litter on the floor and leave the classroom tidy at the end of the lesson; Remain quiet in study periods.

Tutors should make sure that their pupils are aware of these conventions, and all teachers are asked to make sure that they are observed in the classroom. Expectations of Scholars Scholars must be positive about their area of excellence and strive to achieve the highest standard in it. They must be exemplary in their attendance at and commitment to the classes, practices and performances of their area of excellence. Sports scholars are expected to play an active part in the major sports throughout the year and throughout their time at Rendcomb. All scholars are expected, as a condition of their award, to show commitment and good behaviour in College and stay at the College from the point of the award until the end of the sixth form. Scholarships are reviewed annually and students’ academic and behavioural record is taken into account as well as their commitment to their field of excellence. Preparation (Homework) Senior School Prep is both important and necessary. It provides the opportunity for pupils to consolidate and extend the material covered in a lesson. It is essential for background research and it is vital for improving overall understanding. Prep done regularly throughout secondary school can be equivalent to an additional year of study! Prep should be a pupil’s own work and should be done under conditions that allow for complete concentration. In Years 7 to 11 a Prep Timetable operates and pupils are informed of this on the first day of term. All preps are expected to last 30 minutes:  

Year 7 have one Prep for each weeknight from Maths, English, Science and the Languages. Independent reading is also monitored by the English Department; Year 8 have one or two Preps for each weeknight from Maths, English, Science and the Languages. Year 9 pupils have two or three Preps set for each weeknight; Years 10 & 11 have up to 4 Preps set each weeknight but Controlled Assessments may require additional time.

The Prep Timetable helps to organise pupils’ work and time. Parents should sign the Prep Diary every week. It is also a mechanism by which parents can comment on the work set or inform teachers of problems. In the Sixth Form, there is no Prep Timetable as we prepare young people for the working world beyond Rendcomb. However, it is envisaged each student will spend four hours per week per subject on Prep. Preps may be set over a longer period and it is the student’s responsibility to organise his or her time to ensure deadlines are met: this private study work will be conducted in their non-timetabled lessons as well as after school. Once external examinations begin, many pupils find they have to commit some time at the weekend to complete their work. There are supervised Prep sessions available at College in the Activities programme for day pupils. It is strongly recommended that day pupils with long journeys attempt to use some of these. Rendcomb encourages students to be academically reliable. Pupils must make every effort to produce homework on time. If they cannot organise themselves to do this, they must expect to have to stay in at lunchtime or after school to complete the work. It would be wise to treat the statement ‘I have not got any Prep’ with a degree of scepticism; there is never enough time in a School career to consolidate and read around subjects as effectively as one might wish to do! Plagiarism It is a violation of School Rules (and of the rules of Examination Boards) to pass off another's work as one’s own. Other’s essays, whether published or not, must not be used in place of a student’s own endeavour. This prohibition extends to information accessed electronically, including material copied from reference websites such as Wikipedia. Any substantial quotations (for example, of more than half a dozen consecutive words) should be put within quotation marks and should be referenced. Presentation of work Presentation of work is always important. Careless presentation will create a bad impression on your reader who may be distracted from what you have to say. Many readers, including public examiners, will make judgements about your general ability, and even your attitude, if the presentation of your work appears to be careless.     

Do not allow your books to be decorated with stickers or graffiti; Always head written work with an underlined title and date; Try to draft your work, then check for content, organisation and accuracy. Rework as necessary, then write up neatly; Take care with layout, making proper use of margins and indented paragraphs. Write in blue or black ink and only use colour when this is necessary to aid presentation; Proof-read all work for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Do not hope for the best -

make sure your work is correct otherwise your marks and grades will suffer in all subjects. Computer Network – Acceptable Use Policy The Rendcomb College Acceptable Use Policy is an extension of School Rules specifically covering the use of the Rendcomb Network and any electronic equipment connected to it. The use of the Rendcomb College Computer Network and Internet via that network is a privilege and not a right, granted by the College to you the network user and should not be abused in any way. Any misappropriation of the network, or violation of the following rules and conditions is an infringement of school rules, and will therefore be met with disciplinary action. The purpose of the Rendcomb Network is to assist the user in an academic environment as an academic tool. The intent of this policy is to set out rules for the user, to guide them in the correct usage of the network, preventing the user from misuse. Connection to the Rendcomb Network will result in automatic acceptance of the policy and agreement to comply. Acceptable Use Agreement I understand that I must read and abide by the Acceptable Use Policy, to both keep myself safe and protect others from potential harm when using computers at Rendcomb College. There is significant detail in the policy, that I agree to read and abide by. It’s summarised by following principles: 1.

I will only use the network and the College’s computers for appropriate school work and communication. 2. I will act maturely and politely in all that I say and do online. 3. I will do all that I can to ensure the College’s network and computers stay secure. 4. I accept that all of my actions have consequences, particularly online and so will think before I speak and treat others like I want to be treated. Anything that happens using my account is my responsibility. 5. There are many laws, both British and International, and I must comply with them. This includes the promotion of British Values and Standards and prevention of extremism. 6. I understand that the school may monitor my use of the school’s systems, devices and digital communications for my own personal safety. 7. I will immediately report any unpleasant or inappropriate material or messages or anything that makes me feel uncomfortable when I see it online. 8. If I, or someone I know is in trouble online, I will speak to an appropriate member of staff so that their safety can be ensured. 9. I understand that the school also has the right to take action against me if I am involved in incidents of inappropriate behaviour, that are covered in this agreement, when I am out of school and where they involve my membership of the school community (examples would be cyber-bullying, use of images or personal information). 10. I understand that if I fail to comply with this AUP, I will be subject to disciplinary action. This may include confiscation of personal devices, loss of access to the school network / internet, detentions, suspensions, contact with parents and in the event of illegal activities involvement of the police. All authorised users of the network are assigned a Rendcomb College network username and

password. No person should attempt to gain access to the network using credentials that have not been assigned to them or access other users’ data. Under no circumstances should a user attempt to traverse and or bypass the Rendcomb College internet filtering system. Any security gaps identified should be referred to the IT department immediately. Failure to do so, or attempting to exploit any vulnerabilities found will be considered a serious disciplinary issue. Any breach of these guidelines may result in disciplinary action under the school’s disciplinary procedures by the Second Master in the Senior School. All users of the Rendcomb Network are responsible for respecting UK and international law. In the event of any action by proper authorities against any user, Rendcomb College will fully comply with the authorities to provide any information necessary for investigation and compliance. Use of Email The following guidelines cover the use of Electronic Mail on the Rendcomb College Network, and through it to the Internet: • Personal use of email is a privilege, not a right. As such, the privilege may be revoked at any time and for any reason. All email can be recorded and stored, along with the source and destination. • Write all messages and emails in correctly formatted English. Proof read everything. • You must not send or forward chain emails, 'spam', malware or batch files. • You must not forge emails or post anonymous messages • Email is not something that can be regarded as being private. Think before you send! • The use of extremist, racist, sexist, threatening or otherwise discriminatory and objectionable language in email messages is strictly forbidden. Network Etiquette (Netiquette) Network Etiquette describes what is expected of a user, whilst using the Rendcomb College network and internet. This includes but is not limited to, the following: • Be polite – treat others as you would want to be treated • Do not send abusive or derogatory messages to anyone • Respect other people’s privacy, particularly on social media • Do not give out personal information about yourself or other students/staff • Minimise the use of acronyms (e.g. OMG, BTW) • Don’t engage in activities that are prohibited under UK law. Thus the transmission of material subject to copyright or protected by trade secret is forbidden, as is any threatening, bullying or obscene matter. • Don’t take part in, or promote, websites or online groups/chats that encourage extremist activities.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) The College permits pupils to use their portable devices in learning spaces as long as the class teacher has given explicit permission to do so. Acceptable devices are laptops or tablet PCs ideally with a physical keyboard. Mobile phones and on-screen keyboard only devices are not acceptable unless explicit permission is given, e.g. using cameras on phones. Tablets, Laptops and Mobile Devices – Security and Contents  Pupils who bring electronic equipment to school should have both their parents’ permission and Houseparents should be informed.  Pupils are responsible for the security of their own electronic equipment at all times, whether by taking care of them while in class or depositing them in a secure place when not in use in a locker or a locked study. They should not be left in communal areas.  Pupils may not introduce material on to their electronic equipment while at school which is illegal, or contravenes copyright, or contains images which are unsuitable for viewing by the particular age group concerned. This regulation also applies to the viewing of DVDs or Videos anywhere in school.  Your electronic equipment must have its operating system approved and it must have appropriate anti-virus software before it can be connected to the College Network.  There is a comprehensive Acceptable Use Policy which pupils are required to read and sign and are expected to abide by. 4. Admissions The main entry points are at Nursery (3 years), Reception (rising 5 years), Juniors (rising 7 years), 11+, 13+ and 16+. Students may be accepted at other points if places are available. The full Admissions Policy is available on the School’s Website or on request from the Admissions Department. Occasionally, an applicant may have fallen behind in his/her education owing to, for example, illness. In such a case, the School may offer a place in a year lower than the applicant’s age would normally imply. Parents or guardians will be consulted before such an offer is made, but the decision as to the appropriate year for the applicant, taking into account all the relevant circumstances, is a matter for the Headmaster, whose decision is final. 5. Attendance Policy At Rendcomb College, we see education as a partnership between the family and the College. The Regulations covering school attendance are very prescriptive reflecting the importance that is attached to ensuring that all children of compulsory school age attend school. All these Regulations cover independent schools. Schools are required to ensure that an attendance register is taken twice a day, at the start of the morning session, and during the afternoon for all pupils. All Senior School pupils are required to be in school before 8.15am Monday to Friday. On Saturday all pupils should be in before 9.00am. The school day ends at 5.00pm on Monday to Friday, while on Saturday it is usually 3.00pm or after sports fixtures, although many pupils remain later to take part in extra–curricular activities under the supervision of a member of staff. Day Pupils are normally expected to leave by 5.15pm unless parents have informed Housestaff.

Day pupils should travel to and from the College in school uniform, unless given permission by staff to do otherwise. With the exception of pupils in the Upper Sixth, pupils are not allowed to leave the site during the school day, unless accompanied by a member of staff, for a trip or visit or sporting fixture, the dates of which will have been notified to you in advance. If your child is ill (Senior School), please e-mail their Tutor or telephone the College before 8.30am on the first day of absence. If you have not emailed in then your child should on his/her return bring a letter signed by a parent to College giving a reason for the absence. We will always telephone the home on the first day of an unexplained absence in order to make sure that your child has not suffered an accident. Requests for absence must be made in writing/email and reach the College at least five days in advance (except in an emergency, when parents are asked to contact their child’s tutor or Reception before 8.30am). Requests for exceptional absence (i.e. absence for whole days other than Religious Festivals, medical or dental appointments or for illness) should be sent to the Headmaster at least two weeks in advance. We always send parents the term dates over a year in advance in order that you can arrange your holidays without disrupting your child’s education. Please note that it is the Governors’ policy usually not to allow holiday to be taken during term and such absences could be registered as unauthorised on your child’s school record. All boarders are expected to return on the evening prior to the commencement of terms and half terms and following Exeats. At the beginning of the academic year, New pupils and Prefects return earlier than the rest of the College to take part in various induction programmes before the start of term. Additional Requirements for Boarding Pupils Boarding pupils are covered by Boarding Standards: National Minimum Standards. These standards places a legal requirement upon staff who have boarders in their charge to know their whereabouts at all times (or to know where to find them), e.g. by operating a signing in and signing out system when boarders leave the College, and by registering attendance in the boarding house. Boarders in Years 9 to 13 who board for at least five nights (Monday to Friday) are classed as full boarders and hence we will assume that your son/daughter will be staying at the College every weekend other than for exeats. If this is not the case then parents need to make this clear to housestaff stating when they will be in school and when they will be at home for weekends. We expect your son or daughter to live with you or his/her guardian when he/she is away from College on exeats and half term during term time. If your child is leaving the College at the weekend it is absolutely imperative that we receive information giving his/her whereabouts whilst away from the College. If your son/daughter intends to stay at a friend’s house then the Houseparents will require communication from you and the host before agreeing the weekend arrangements. If your son/daughter is a regular flexi boarder (1, 2 or 3 nights per week) we will assume he/she is going home unless we receive a letter/email informing us otherwise.

Please telephone the appropriate house if he/she is taken ill during an exeat, He/she should bring a letter signed by a parent/guardian on his/her return to College giving a reason for the absence. We will always telephone the home if your son/daughter is late in returning from an exeat. 6. Behavioural Policy, School Rules and Sanctions Introduction This policy applies to all pupils and aims to promote good behaviour, self-discipline, self-respect and respect for others. This policy applies when pupils are at College, travelling to and from the College, wearing school uniform or in some other way identifiable as a pupil of the College. It applies when pupil misbehaviour:  poses a threat to members of the College community and/or the public; 

may result in repercussions for the orderly running of the College; and/or



adversely affects the College’s reputation.

The College acknowledges its legal duties in respect of safeguarding and its obligations under the Equality Act 2010 in relation to those pupils with disability or SEN. The College will make reasonable adjustments for managing misbehaviour which is related to a pupil’s disability. Any genuine religious or belief requirements which may affect a pupil, for example, when being able to present their case, will also be considered. Expectations The following expectations are made of Rendcombians:  They should work hard, take a pride in their work, be inquisitive and able to work independently;  They should find a variety of areas of interest outside the classroom and develop their skills in these areas;  They should make their skills and abilities available for the good of the whole community and to do their best when representing the College;  They should comply with the rules and regulations of the College;  They must not do anything that hurts or offends others and must do as much as they can to help others. High standards of behaviour, manners and discipline are expected of all pupils at all times. Pupils are expected to deport themselves in such a way as to be a credit to the College. All pupils are made aware of the Pupil handbook which sets out the College’s guidelines. Particular attention is drawn to the following points:  All conduct that is anti-social or tends to bring discredit to the College, whether on the premises or elsewhere is not acceptable;  The values of the Rendcomb College community are based on mutual trust, support and respect. Conduct around the site and behaviour towards each other ought to always reflect these principles;  It is a courtesy that pupils needing to miss lessons or other College commitments explain the circumstances to the appropriate teachers in advance;  We are a learning community and so pupils are expected to be punctual to all lessons and activities. Perpetual lateness will be reported by Tutors or Heads of Key Stages to parents.

Registration  Day pupils must arrive at College in the morning by 8.15am for registration with their Tutor. End of the school day departure should not be before 5pm Monday to Friday and after games on Saturday. No pupil is allowed to leave College on a regular basis before these times without the permission of the Headmaster;  If a pupil has an appointment, e.g. Medical/dentist which takes them out for part of the school day the parents should inform their child’s tutor. The tutor will inform the necessary staff and the pupil must sign out from Reception when they leave and sign back in on their return.  All pupils must also register at around 1.55pm in House except where they have a games fixture that requires their presence before that time. Personal conduct and appearance  Day pupils should travel to and from the College in school uniform.  Attendance at all timetabled periods, games and activities is compulsory. Pupils must be prompt;  If pupils miss a lesson due to a music lesson or any other reason it is their responsibility to catch up the work;  Pupils may not eat or drink walking through Main Building corridors, or in the village street or on the way to lessons. Pupils may not visit the Village Post Office/ Shop between lessons, except at the published break and lunch times;  Pupils must be properly dressed as appropriate for lessons, games, activities, away visits, Sunday Chapel and formal occasions as set out in the Dress Code;  The requirements for College working uniform are published in each house and reminders are sent to your parents and published in a separate leaflet entitled ‘Dress Code’;  Proper games kit must be worn at all times when formal games or activities are taking place. Games kit should not be worn in the Dining Hall except with the permission of the teacher in charge of a game;  Pupils may wear casual clothes on weekdays after 5.00pm, on Saturdays after games and all day on Sundays, except for specific services in the Chapel as published, and as advised by the Houseparents;  College is not an appropriate place for any physical contact between pupils;  Chewing gum is forbidden in all areas of the College. It is potentially the cause of considerable damage and disfigurement to the inside of our beautiful buildings and grounds;  Courtesy should be extended to any visitors to the College. Pupils should be aware of the offence caused by bad language (which will not be tolerated) and large gatherings of pupils blocking the Main Drive or other thoroughfares. Laptop Computers/tablets: security and contents Pupils who bring laptops/tablets or other computer equipment to College should have their parents’ permission. Pupils are responsible for the security of their own laptops/tablets at all times, whether by taking care of them while in class or depositing them in a secure place when not in use in a locker or a locked study. They should not be left in communal areas. Pupils may not introduce material on to their devices while at College which is illegal, or contravenes copyright, or contains images that are unsuitable for viewing by the particular age

group concerned. This regulation also applies to the viewing of DVDs or Videos anywhere in College. Your device must have its operating system approved and it must have appropriate anti-virus software before it can be connected to the College Network. All pupils are expected to read and abide by the separately published Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). Bounds and Visiting Times In general, on weekdays pupils may visit other house common rooms except Park House after lunch, between 1530 and 1550 and before prep. They may not visit study-bedrooms in other houses. At weekends other houses except Park House may be visited until 2100. The Junior School are out of bounds without specific permission to be there. The Park is within bounds only during the first half of the Michaelmas Term and during the Summer Term. The Wilderness may only be used for walking to and from games or at other times with the specific permission of Housestaff. Visits to Cirencester or Cheltenham are privileges that may be granted at the discretion of Housestaff and under conditions which they lay down, however this is generally for 6th form pupils and only out of normal school hours or over the weekend. School Rules These rules are intended to impose only such restrictions as are necessary for the safety and wellbeing of the College and the individual. The College recognises that it has a general duty to eliminate discrimination. Good order is best when it results naturally from consideration for other people; Rendcomb’s philosophy is that we should all live together in respect for one another and behave accordingly. The rules under the heading of School Order are particularly important and breaches of these will be brought to the attention of the Second Master and/or Headmaster. The Headmaster reserves the right to change the rules from time to time as he thinks fit. School Order 1 There is no place at Rendcomb for any kind of bullying, cruelty or disruptive behaviour. 2

The borrowing of property without permission will be treated as theft. Any theft is a serious offence.

Members of the College may not have the following in their possession at school: Guns, including air-guns, or ammunition, explosives, including fireworks, all knives, tobacco, ecigarettes, alcoholic drink, illegal drugs.

Entry into Public Houses, smoking (including e-cigarettes) and the use of illegal drugs are forbidden. The consumption of alcoholic drink is forbidden except by 6th Formers in situations authorised by the College.

No-one may drive a car or motorcycle while under the College's authority unless he/ she is with his/ her parents or an official driving instructor, except with the specific permission of the Second Master. No-one may travel in a car, unless driven either by a relative or a member of staff, without specific permission. Hitch-hiking is not allowed.

Boys may not go into girls' study-bedrooms, dormitories or corridors; girls may not go into boys' study-bedrooms, dormitories or corridors.

Rewards Positive reinforcement is encouraged and pupils are praised for good work. Pupils are awarded certificates and are publically praised in Headmaster’s Assembly for good work and behaviour. The College recognises that positive discipline and reward methods can be effective in managing a pupil’s misbehaviour. Sanctions and Punishments Pupils are expected to display good manners, courtesy and considerate behaviour at all times. Pupils found to be failing in this respect, or in breach of other school rules will be reported to their Tutor/Houseparents/Head of Key Stage. The following punishments may be imposed on the pupil: (i) restrictions of social/ leisure time; (ii) loss of casual clothes privileges; (iii) loss of other privileges appropriate to age; (iv) work to help the community; (v) restriction of time off College premises; (vi) gating, which may include a gating card and weekends. However, serious breaches of the School Order will be referred to the Second Master and, if it is warranted, may be referred to the Headmaster. Such breaches may be punished by any of the sanctions under ‘Serious Breaches of School Order or Rules’ and parents or guardians will be informed. In the most serious case, the pupil or pupils concerned may be placing in jeopardy their future as members of the College. The College's policy on bullying is published on House notice boards and elsewhere in the College and is contained elsewhere in this booklet.

Serious breaches of School Order or Rules If a pupil is persistently in breach of the School Rules, or his or her attitude is seriously damaging to the welfare of others, or staff have exhausted the above punishments, or for a single major breach of the School Rules the following sanctions could be used: Expulsion. This is usually reserved for a serious criminal offence and serious misbehaviour or acts which cause damage to the College community. 

Required removal. The Headmaster may require parents to remove a pupil temporarily or permanently from the College by reason of the pupil’s misconduct as an alternative to exclusion.



Suspension or detention. The Headmaster – often through delegated responsibility to the Second Master - may require a pupil to be detained or suspended from the College and required to live at home, for example, whilst any misbehavior or complaint is being investigated.

Association with drugs, drinking, and cases of malicious or bullying behaviour, are examples of what may be classified as such a single major breach. Examples of such breaches and their consequences are stated below but they are not any exhaustive list.  Pupils who consume illegal drugs or bring them into the College cannot expect to remain at College.  Pupils bringing alcoholic drink onto the College site will be suspended, the length of that suspension depending on the seriousness of the offence and the previous record of the offender. Pupils consuming alcoholic drink on the College site, other than in authorised situations, will be suspended, as above.

Smoking in College has a separate, clearly defined set of steps: A pupil caught smoking will be reported to the Houseparents. On the first offence the pupil will receive a House punishment and the Houseparents will write a letter home informing parents/guardian of the offence. Subsequent offences will lead to a requirement to see the Second Master, or a requirement to see the Headmaster, who will contact the parents or guardian and arrange a meeting with them at College to discuss the problem and appropriate action to be taken, which may lead to suspension.  A pupil caught smoking inside a building will automatically be suspended as they are causing a fire risk and endangering other people’s lives.  A College Prefect caught smoking will cease to be a Prefect and be punished according to the rules set out above. e-cigarettes and vaping  While e-cigarettes and vaping is viewed as less harmful than cigarettes the school has no wish to promote the use of them by any pupil.  As such e-cigarettes are banned from the site and a pupil caught in possession of one while under school authority will be treated in the same manner as someone caught in possession of or smoking a cigarette. The e-cigarettes will be confiscated and returned to the parents of the pupil.  A pupil caught smoking an e-cigarette within a building will not be suspended on the first offence as it is not a fire risk; it will be treated in the same way as a first smoking offence. However a subsequent similar offence will result in automatic suspension since the pupil is showing a disregard for school rules.

Dangerous items and banned substances Rendcomb is committed to safeguarding the health and safety of our student population and have designated a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards certain items. Alcohol Pupils bringing alcoholic drink onto the College site will be suspended, the length of that suspension depending on the seriousness of the offence and the previous record of the offender. Pupils consuming alcoholic drink on the College site, other than in authorised situations, will be suspended, as above. Dangerous Items Certain items are unacceptable in a school. These include all weapons, including Swiss-army or craft knives, catapults and BB Guns. Inappropriate material Material that may be deemed malicious, inappropriate or offensive (including pornography) is not permitted. Pupils have a duty not to access or bring into College material that they would consider that teachers, parents or other adults might consider to be inappropriate or offensive. Searching pupils and/or their possessions The College may carry out searches of pupils and/or their possessions. Only members of staff authorised by the Headmaster or Second Master may conduct a search of a pupil and/or their possessions. The College does not conduct intimate searches and only outer clothing (for example, jackets/coats, hats, shoes, boots, gloves and scarves) will be required to be removed. Staff will ask for the pupil to remove anything in their trouser pockets. The consent of the pupil will usually be obtained before conducting a search unless the Headmaster and authorised members of staff reasonably suspects that an item has been, or is likely to be, used to commit an offence or cause personal injury/damage to the property of any person (including the pupil being searched). All personal searches will be conducted by a member of staff of the same gender as the pupil and, ideally, in the presence of another member of staff. A search may be conducted on or off College premises where the pupil is in the lawful control of the College. Items which may be searched for include any item banned under the school rules and any other item identified as such by law. If the item is an electronic device the College may examine and erase any data from the device if the College considers there to be good reason to do so. Parents will be informed of any search conducted of their child and/or their child’s possessions. The College will keep records of all searches carried out including the results of the search and any follow up action taken. Use of force The College may use reasonable force to prevent pupils committing an offence, injuring themselves or others or damaging property, and to maintain good order and discipline at College. The College does not use or threaten to use corporal punishment. The College has a Physical Restraint of Pupils Policy, a copy of which is contained in this Handbook.

Safeguarding duties All staff are responsible for considering whether any misbehaviour gives cause to suspect that a pupil is suffering, or is likely to suffer, significant harm. If such suspicions exist, staff must follow the College’s Safeguarding of Children (Child Protection) Policy. The College will also consider whether continuing disruptive behaviour might be the result of unmet educational or other needs. At this point, the College will consider whether support systems are needed to be put in place and whether liaising with external agencies is necessary and appropriate. Malicious allegations against staff The Headmaster will decide whether to take disciplinary action in accordance with this policy where a pupil is found to have made a false and malicious allegation against a member of staff. Where a parent has made a deliberately false and malicious allegation against staff, the Headmaster will decide whether a required removal of their child(ren) from the College is appropriate in light of their misconduct. Appeal Where parents are unhappy with the Headmaster’s decision to expel their child, parents may request a Governors’ Review of the Headmaster’s decision. 7. Boarding Aims & Arrangements The aims set out below identify what the College aims to provide for each of its pupils. They should be read in conjunction with the aims and expectations of pupils themselves contained in the Pupil Handbook. For all our pupils, day and boarding, we aim to:    

        

The key element in the boarding arrangements at Rendcomb College is flexibility. We recognise the needs of each family differ and we try to accommodate that diversity where possible. Many pupils now opt to flexi-board on occasion and the College welcomes such experiences either on an irregular or more permanent basis. However there are still a lot of pupils who are weekly or full boarders. Pupils who particularly benefit from boarding are those who are heavily involved in school based activities, those who wish to cut their travelling time and those who wish to gain experience of independence prior to embarking on higher education course. Boarding also provides an evening structure where pupils can complete their prep in an orderly environment. Many parents

welcome this. Perhaps the greatest benefit pupils receive from boarding is friendship. A blend of family, friends, independence and structure serves most boys/girls very well. There are five boarding houses which pupils whether they are boarding or day are attached to, and each House produces a booklet of information specific to that House. Old Rectory – Years 7 to 9 Boys’ House Godman House – years 7 to 9 Girls’ House Stable House – Years 10 to 12 Boys’ House Lawn House – Years 10 to 12 Girls’ House Park House – years 12 & 13 Mixed House In all these Houses there are Houseparents who have overall Duty of Care for the pupils attached to that House. Working with them is a small group of staff who help to supervise the pupils during the day and evening. They also help to provide the Pastoral Care which is at the heart of Rendcomb College. Flexi – Boarding This is a pupil who requires a bed for either a few nights a week on a regular basis or occasionally for a few nights or longer periods of time. In these situations the pupil is accommodated in a boarding house if there is space. However this does not entitle the pupil to a permanent allocation of a bed in that boarding house and they are not allowed to leave their belongings in the room on the nights they do not board, since the bed may be used for other flexi-boarders. Parents are then charged at a set rate per night. Weekly Boarding – Only available for Years 7 & 8 We recognise that the jump from flexi-boarder of only a few nights a week, to full time boarding is a large step to take for a young pupil and often never quite fulfilling parental needs. Also as a flexi-boarder there is no guarantee that there will be a bed available in the boarding house on the required nights. In order to try and ease this situation, we offer a weekly boarding fee for pupils in Years 7 & 8 of the Senior School. This will guarantee that your child has a permanent bed in the boarding house and they will be allowed to keep things in their area. It will also mean that when your child comes home after school on a Saturday afternoon for the rest of the weekend at home, returning to school on Monday morning, you are not incurring any cost. Should there be an occasion where a Saturday or Sunday night is also needed we will charge for that as we normally would for flexi-boarding (up to 2 weekends per term, any more will mean your child will be viewed as a full boarder and charged accordingly). 8. Bullying – Anti-Bullying Policy At Rendcomb College, our community is based upon respect, good manners and fair play. We are committed to providing a safe and caring environment that is free from disruption, unkindness, violence and any form of harassment so that every one of our pupils can develop his/her full potential. We expect our pupils to treat members of staff with courtesy and cooperation so that they can learn in a relaxed; but orderly, atmosphere. All pupils should care for and support each other.

Rendcomb prides itself on its respect and mutual tolerance. Ours is a diverse community, with pupils from a variety of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Some pupils require additional support and help. Parents/guardians have an important role in supporting the College in maintaining high standards of behaviour. It is essential that College and homes have consistent expectations of behaviour and that they co-operate closely together. Bullying, harassment and victimisation and discrimination will not be tolerated. We treat all our pupils and their parents fairly and with consideration and we expect them to reciprocate towards each other, the staff and the College. Any kind of bullying is unacceptable and includes bullying behaviour off College premises of which the College is aware (for example, cyber-bullying or bullying which takes place on College trips). Where necessary, we will apply the sanctions described in our Behaviour Policy for behaviour that constitutes bullying or harassment of any kind. This policy was written in response to and with regard for the Department for Education’s guidance ‘Preventing and Tackling Bullying’ (October 2014) and may be reviewed in light of any new government guidance issued from time to time. Aims The aims of this policy are:  to prevent bullying and maintain and promote a positive environment where all pupils can thrive and be happy  to support the bully and the victim with the aim of deterring bullying behaviour  to foster positive attitudes towards individuals who are disabled and towards religious, cultural or ethnic groups in and outside the College community.  to comply with the College’s obligations under the Equality Act 2010. Definition of bullying Bullying may be defined as the intentional hurting, harming or humiliating of another person. It can take the form of racial, religious, cultural, sexual, sexist, homophobic, special educational needs and disability related bullying. It could involve physical (including sexual) intimidation, verbal, cyber (including chat room, email, e-photos and SMS messages), and emotional means (by excluding, tormenting or spreading malicious rumours). It could also be because a child is adopted or has caring responsibilities. It can involve manipulating a third party to tease or torment someone. It can involve complicity that falls short of direct participation. Bullying is often hidden and subtle. It can also be overt and cause intimidation. Bullying may involve actions or comments that are racist, homophobic, which focus on disabilities or other physical attributes (such as hair colour or body shape). Bullying can happen anywhere and at any time. It can cause both physical and serious lasting psychological damage and even suicide. Harassment, threatening behaviour and damage to another’s property, as well as malicious electronic communications, which intend to cause distress or conveys an indecent message, may be a criminal offence (and also a civil wrong) which has repercussions outside the College. We always treat bullying very seriously. It conflicts sharply with the College’s policy on equal opportunities, as well as with its social and moral principles. The College will also consider whether it is appropriate to notify external agencies such as the police where they have suspicions or concerns that a criminal offence has or will be committed or bullying behaviour poses a serious threat to members of the College community or the general public.

Signs of bullying There are many different signs that could indicate that another pupil is being bullied. However, if a pupil changes their behaviour this may indicate that they are being bullied and anyone who notices this in a pupil are encouraged to report it to a member of staff. Examples of changes in behaviour include:  Unwillingness to return to College  Displays of excessive anxiety, becoming withdrawn or unusually quiet  Books, bags and other belongings suddenly go missing, or are damaged  Change to established habits Although there may be other causes for some of the above symptoms, a repetition of, or a combination of these possible signs of bullying should be investigated by parents and teachers. Preventative measures      

All pupils are encouraged to tell a member of the teaching or pastoral staff at once if they know that bullying is taking place. A list of all the possible people that could be informed is shown in Section 5 titled ‘Worried’ and on posters in every boarding house. All reported incidents are recorded and investigated by the member of staff who was informed or the House staff. In serious cases the Assistant Head or Deputy Head may be involved immediately. Senior School Head Boys/Girls and their team of prefects are provided with training which specifically covers the importance of offering support and assistance to younger and to vulnerable pupils. All initiation ceremonies designed to cause pain anxiety or humiliation, are banned. We reserve the right to investigate incidents that take place outside College hours, on College visits and trips and that occur in the vicinity of the College, involving our pupils.

Cyberbullying: definition The generally accepted definition of cyberbullying is defined by the web site: http://www.cyberbullying.org/ . They defined it as follows: “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices." This definition was developed because it is simple, concise, and reasonably comprehensive and it captures the most important elements. These elements include the following:    

Willful: The behavior has to be deliberate, not accidental. Repeated: Bullying reflects a pattern of behavior, not just one isolated incident. Harm: The target must perceive that harm was inflicted. Computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices: This, of course, is what differentiates cyberbullying from traditional bullying.

Their definition is clarified further and made more relevant to pupils’ everyday experiences by further stating:

“cyberbullying is when someone repeatedly makes fun of another person online or repeatedly picks on another person through e-mail or text message or when someone posts something online about another person that they don’t like.” The emphasis in particular is on the repetitive nature of the harmful behavior, a single instance of harassment does not constitute bullying. Although this one posted comment/photo on the internet could lead to further comments by others hence resulting in recurring humiliation and shame and, therefore, lead to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying: preventative measures In addition to the preventative measures described above, Rendcomb College: 

Expects all pupils to adhere to its policy for the safe use of the internet. Certain sites are blocked by our filtering system and our IT Department monitors pupils’ use.  May impose sanctions for the misuse, or attempted misuse of the internet.  Issues all pupils with their own personal College email address.  Adheres to many of the Government guidelines regarding E-teaching and the internet.  Offers guidance on the safe use of social networking sites and cyberbullying in IT & PSHEE lessons, which covers blocking and removing contacts from “buddy” lists.  Offers guidance on keeping names, addresses, passwords, mobile phone numbers and other personal details safe.  Does not permit mobile phones to be used in public areas of the College, or where they may cause annoyance to others and only in classrooms with staff permission.  Does not allow the use of cameras on mobile phones in washing and changing areas, or in the bedrooms of boarding houses. Further details, including the College’s policy on the use of the internet, are given in our ICT Acceptable Use Policy on pupils’ use of ICT, mobile phones and other electronic devices. Intervention Bullying will always be dealt with severely and in accordance with the College’s Behaviour Policy. Any sanctions imposed will reflect the seriousness of the bullying incident. If bullying behaviour persists and/or is particularly severe, the bully may be excluded or suspended from College. Where sanctions are applied, they will be applied fairly, consistently and reasonably taking into account any disabilities or special educational needs a pupil may have or the needs of vulnerable pupils. Staff should always consider the motive behind bullying behaviour and whether it reveals any concerns for the safety of the perpetrator. If staff have any reasonable cause to suspect that a pupil is suffering, or is likely to suffer, significant harm the College’s Safeguarding of Children (Child Protection) Policy should be followed. Even where safeguarding is not considered to be an issue, the College will consider whether external services need to be informed to support the pupil and help tackle underlying issues, for example, which may have contributed to bullying behaviour.

Procedures for dealing with reported bullying Parents If parents know or suspect that their child or another pupil is being bullied, they should contact the College without delay. All concerns about bullying will be taken seriously. If the pupil being bullied or their parents are not satisfied with the action taken by the College under this procedure, they can make a formal complaint by following the College’s Complaints Procedure. Members of staff All staff should be alert to the signs of bullying. If a pupil or parent reports a case of bullying to a member of staff, or staff suspect bullying is taking place, they should follow the procedure below. If an incident of bullying is reported, the following procedures are adopted:  



  





Reported incidents of bullying will be recorded in writing by the bullied pupil, the alleged bully and any witnesses. Staff will also make notes of any interviews they have with the pupils involved. Our reaction to reported incidents will depend very much upon the detailed circumstances. Students need to have confidence that any communication with staff with regard to bullying will be dealt with in regard to sensitivity and seriousness. Appropriate staff intervention, we are confident, can improve the situation quickly and will not make the situation worse. Contact with parents of the bullied pupil and of the bully at the end of an investigation will very much depend on the circumstances and conclusion. This contact may be from the House parents, Deputy Head, Second Master or the Head. Their support should be sought. A meeting involving all the parties, with close staff supervision, could be helpful in developing a strategy for all concerned to close the episode. A monitoring and review strategy will be put in place. Should any serious incident of bullying be reported, the Second Master or Deputy Head JS will be brought in at an early stage to investigate and the bully may receive immediate suspension or worse depending on the severity of the bullying. The consequences of any repetition - further suspension or the removal of the bully from College - will be made clear to the bully and to his or her parents. The DSL (DDSL in JS) will also be brought in on serious incidents as it could have a serious effect on the welfare of the pupil. If the bullying is particularly serious, or the tackling bullying procedures are deemed to be ineffective, the Headteacher, Second Master and the DSL will consider implementing child protection procedures. In very serious and persistent cases, and only after the Head has been involved, it may be necessary to make a report to the Police or to the Social Services. However, it is the policy of Rendcomb College to attempt to resolve such issues internally under the College’s own disciplinary procedures, unless the matter is of such gravity that a criminal prosecution is likely.

Promotion and review This policy is regularly reviewed and updated. Every complaint or report of bullying will be recorded. Records are monitored and reviewed to identify any patterns in bullying behaviour so that appropriate steps can be taken to address such behaviour. The policy is promoted and supported through assemblies, PSHEE, Tutor time, so that all pupils understand the College’s policy on behaviour. All staff are made aware of this policy through training so that the principles of this policy are understood, legal responsibilities are known and action is defined to resolve and prevent problems. 9. Calendar At the beginning of every term each pupil is issued with a Calendar with one posted to the parent or guardian. It is suggested every pupil carries their Calendar at all times. For parents the website also has a copy of the calendar which can be accessed at any time. The Calendar not only gives a day-to-day diary of College events in both the Senior and Junior Schools but also contains other important information.    

10. Chapel The College is based on Christian beliefs; however, our values are very much based on openness, tolerance and inclusivity. As such, we welcome students from all faith backgrounds, as well as those families who have no faith commitment. Services in St Peter’s Rendcomb follow the practice of the Church of England. Worship during a student’s time in the College is designed to meet their spiritual needs at each stage in his development. During the week, pupils in Years 7 to 10 worship together on a Tuesday at 1410; pupils in the year 11 and sixth form worship together on a Friday at 1410. The Headmaster’s Assembly also often has a spiritual, moral or social message as a focus. Boarders attend services in St Peter’s as per the calendar and join with the village community. Major festivals (Harvest, Remembrance, Advent, Mothering Sunday) provide particular focus for worship. Day pupils and all parents are warmly welcomed to services at St Peter’s. The Carol Service has traditionally been a highlight in the College Calendar and brings the Michaelmas Term to a conclusion. The service is held in Cirencester Parish Church. The Michaelmas term ends after this event. Confirmation classes are offered to students each year and the College Chaplain prepares boys and girls wishing to be confirmed.

11. Clothing and Dress Code The quality of appearance very much proclaims the image of the College. To give the most positive impression of our community, all pupils are expected to dress smartly and in accordance with the published dress code for their year group. Uniform lists for the various age groups are published on the school website and available from Admissions by request. Pupil dress code One of the reasons for having a dress code is to ensure that pupils are properly dressed for the workplace and to help prepare them for what would be expected in a professional career. All students must conform to the regulations set out below; if in any doubt consult with your Tutor or house staff. Some items must be obtained from Schoolblazer, please see uniform lists for further detail. Some items are optional, but if optional no other type may be worn unless specified in the list. Games kit MUST be bought from Schoolblazer. Boarding pupils should be in school uniform from the start of the school day 8.00am until the end of the school day, which is 5.00pm Monday to Friday and after games on a Saturday, unless permission has been given otherwise. Day pupils should travel to and from the College in school uniform. Summer working uniform may be worn in the Summer Term only once it has been announced by the Second master that this is permitted. Winter working uniform must be worn during the rest of the school year. School Uniform: Years 7 to 11 Pupils must wear the uniform shown on the clothing list appropriate to their year group. All pupils should appear in clean, black, polished, leather shoes. Girls’ shoes should also not be higher that 40mm and block heeled (platform soles, kitten heels are not permitted). No pupil should be wearing trainers with school uniform, unless permission has been given by a member of staff or the Medical Centre. All sweaters for years 7 to 11 should be regulation navy with the Rendcomb badge and in a good state of repair. All shirts/blouses must be tucked into trousers/skirts apart from fitted summer blouses. Girls’ skirts must be on the knee or longer. Trousers must be worn up to waist height, if necessary fastened with a plain black belt that does not have a large buckle. Rendcomb tracksuit tops may not be worn as a regular coat over school uniform. School all-in-one waterproof jacket and fleece for Years 7 to 9 should be of a regulation type. Years 10 and 11 may wear the all-in-one waterproof or a navy blue overcoat in the style of Schoolblazer. Any dispute over the legality of any coat will be referred to Head of Key Stage, House Staff or the Second Master. No coat or outdoor jacket should be worn in a classroom. Scarves, if worn, must be the school scarf for Years 7 to 11. Boys’ socks must be plain black. Girls must wear navy socks or navy tights in winter. In summer,

Years 7 and 8 girls may wear navy blue ankle socks, while Years 9 to 11may wear natural tights or navy blue ankle socks. Tee-shirts which can be seen may not be worn under an open-necked shirt/blouse. All girls in years 7 to 11 should have their hair tied back tightly during the school working day if their hair is long enough to touch the shoulder. Hair ties and grips should be of a simple design in navy or black. Boys should be clean-shaven. Hats and gloves are not permitted except in exceptionally cold weather when plain navy blue or black hats or gloves may be worn to and from College. Sixth Form Uniform There is a little more flexibility for 6th form pupils and their uniform, although they are expected to conform to the uniform list and purchase the necessary clothing from Schoolblazer where it is specified. Any pupil not adhering to this expectation will be asked to purchase the required uniform as soon as possible. All shirts/blouses must be tucked into trousers/skirts, unless it is a tailored blouse designed to be un-tucked. Trousers must be worn up to waist height. Working jewellery should be kept to a minimum. Make-up and Jewellery Girls’ jewellery should be kept to a minimum – For years 7 to 11, one set only of gold or silver stud earrings, and only a plain chain necklace. Boys may neither wear an earring nor any necklace other than a simple chain. Years 7 and 8 girls may not wear make-up Years 9 to 11 girls may only wear subtle tones of mascara. No nail varnish, blusher, lip or other eye make up will be allowed. 6th form will be allowed more freedom but the make-up must not be of an extreme nature or garish. The College recognises that some piercings have different significance depending on the cultural background or religion of some pupils and permits only those piercings which represent a genuine religious requirement of a pupil’s belief or religion. However, the College may require pupils to remove overtly noticeable piercings, for example, for reasons of health and safety. Length and appearance of pupils’ hair It is important to consider safety and it follows that all girls who are involved in science practicals, art & design work, games or similar situations should have their hair tied back tightly if it is longer than touching the shoulders. Boys’ hair should be clearly off the collar of a shirt or sweater. It should not be allowed to grow outwards excessively nor should it be cut severely short (except where the length of hair represents a genuine religious requirement of a pupil’s belief or religion, for example, Sikhism). Hair should not be obviously or garishly dyed. If it is dyed it should be of a natural colour.

Games College games’ clothing must be worn for all games sessions, including those for students not involved in the major sport of the term. If pupils are travelling away to matches in games kit they must wear the full tracksuit, unless it is cricket when they should wear their cricket whites. Wearing games kit in Lessons On some days pupils may need to change into games kit at the beginning of the day, at break or in lunch break because of a PE or Drama practical lesson or games period. In these situations pupil must wear their clean school tracksuit while attending their academic lessons. After PE lessons, pupils should change back into working uniform in the next available break. No pupil should change into games kit for afternoon lessons because of a commitment in activity time. The full Uniform List is available on the School Website within the Admissions section. Naming All uniform and casual clothing must be named with woven nametapes, and shoes, boots and trainers must be clearly marked with their owner’s name. All other personal possessions e.g. mobile phones, computers, sports equipment, bags, casual clothes etc., should also be clearly marked with the pupil’s name. No unnecessary or valuable items should be brought into College. Lost Property Pupils should make every effort to find the property for themselves before reporting the loss. Property may have been handed into Reception or to the Second Master so pupils should check with them prior to reporting that they have lost their property. Books and kit left untended in inappropriate places will be confiscated and treated as lost property. 12. Communication The first point of contact for a Pupil should be with his/her their Tutor. The Tutor will send a letter to you within the first 10 days of each academic year introducing themselves. 13. Curriculum Principles The aims of Rendcomb are that pupils should leave able:      

Curriculum Structure Key Stage 3 The curriculum is planned to provide a broad range of subject areas which broadly follow the National Curriculum content. Curriculum time is allocated in a balanced manner between creative arts, languages, sciences, humanities; core subjects of English and Maths have a greater time allocation in recognition of their general academic importance. In Years 7 to 9 students study a common curriculum comprising lesson in Art, DT, English, French, Geography, German, History, ICT, Maths, Music, PE, RE, and General Science. Students are taught in mixed ability groups in all subjects except for Maths (from the Michaelmas Half Term in Year 7) and English (from Year 8). The Year 9 curriculum includes separate sciences, and students are permitted to opt for Spanish in place of either German or French. The GCSE Maths course is started in the Summer Term of Year 9. PSHEE is delivered to all year groups within a specified period every week.

Students are expected to choose four subjects in Year 12 with the likelihood of dropping one by the end of the year and to then study three of these in Year 13, though in exceptional circumstances students may opt for more or fewer subjects. Overseas students may also choose to study at the College for a Pre A Level year, being taught courses in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry by subject specialists, and intensive English Language training conducted by EAL Department staff. Additional Curriculum Commitments All students meet with their academic tutor at the start of the day for registration where they will have a brief opportunity to discuss academic progress. There is also a period every week with the Tutor to cover PSHEE topics relevant to their age group. Further social, spiritual, and cultural development is addressed through attendance at weekly Chapel services, and in whole school PSHEE courses. All pupils in Years 7 to 11 are involved in sports on Saturday afternoons, plus other sessions during the week as published in the School Routine. They are also expected to take part in the

activity programme which happens every day between 1610 and 1700. Activities range from Sport, Shooting, Horse Riding, Dance, Science Clubs, Poetry Clubs, Cooking and many more. Curriculum Time Allocation (Senior School) The taught school week comprises of forty-nine 35 minute lessons. Teaching time per subject reflects the need to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum; in Key Stage 3 and GCSE a generous time allocation is made for English, Maths, and Science reflecting the importance of these subjects and the need to develop basic skills relevant to the whole curriculum. 14. Data Protection Data Protection Notice for Pupils, Parents and Guardians For the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998 ("the DPA"), Rendcomb College, ("the College") is the "data controller" of personal data about pupils and their parents and/or guardians ("your personal data"). Personal data processed by the College Personal data processed by the College includes contact details, national curriculum and other assessment results, attendance information, special educational needs, and images of pupils engaging in College activities (and in relation to parents and/or guardians, may include financial information). The College may also process sensitive personal data such as ethnic group, religious beliefs and relevant medical information. Your personal data will usually be collected directly from you, but some may be passed to the College by third parties. Purposes for which your data may be processed Your personal data (including sensitive personal data, where appropriate) is processed by the College strictly in accordance with the Data Protection Act in order to:       

15. Drama There is both Drama as an Activity and Drama as an academic subject available at Rendcomb College. The School aims to stage a significant performance or dramatic event each term, drawing not just from the School’s drama scholars, but from a range of pupils who have auditioned for roles in the plays. Usually plays are cast from a particular year group or groups, and a policy of ‘open’ auditions is used to ensure that new talent emerges. In academic terms, Drama is taught at GCSE, with Drama and Theatre Studies being offered at A/S and A2. A good number of trips to the Theatre are organised and advertised beyond those studying Drama for examination and enrichment purposes. 16. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Rendcomb College offers the Bronze and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This scheme is firmly in place here and throughout their school life a pupil will experience all 4 of the key ingredients of the Award – Service, Sport, Skill and Expedition. Expeditions are held during school exeats wherever possible, but are planned and notified in advance to allow families to organise arrangements so that there will not be a conflict with these dates. 17. Duty of Care This is implied by the Care Standards Act of 2002, where a school or college provides accommodation for any child, it shall be the duty of the relevant person to safeguard and promote the child’s welfare. The requirement for a houseparent to ensure the safety of all individual children accommodated in the house, particularly if they are a boarder, to protect them from harm and to promote their welfare is enshrined in Law. The Houseparent thereby has a ‘Duty of Care’, essentially a practical notion that requires a Houseparent to use reasonable foresight to avoid potential hazards and to act like a ‘careful parent’. 18. Extra-Curricular Visits The College offers a large number of extra-curricular visits in any one academic year. These visits in the past have included a Geography trip to Iceland, ski trips, sporting tours and many expeditions training pupils for these visits. We also have many one day visits of a more curricular nature. We have an established routine for the planning, preparation and delivery of our off- site activities. Risk Assessments are in place and reviewed and updated after each visit. Responsibility and deference to Health and Safety are key to our provision. Where outside companies are used we insist on their validation as bonded organisations.

We are proud that our pupils gain a great deal from our range of additional activities and pursuits. We are convinced that they benefit in many ways, not least in terms of confidence, skills and new friendships. 19. English as a Second Language Pupils from overseas are welcomed at Rendcomb College, adding much to the experience and culture of the School. International pupils are required to pass an entrance exam in English before they are accepted at the College. In their first week they participate in an induction programme to familiarise them with school life. All pupils whose native tongue is not English participate in EAL lessons. An assessment will then determine the number and frequency of lessons thereafter. Sixth form pupils also receive EAL lessons if needed during the week. All lessons are within the main timetable. They are taught by native EAL-qualified teachers who also have a strong pastoral commitment to the overseas pupils. The EAL Department aims to enable overseas pupils to participate fully in the mainstream programme and sit external Cambridge exams at the appropriate level. EAL lessons are charged to the parents at the end of each term. The College policy is one of full integration and international pupils enjoy all the opportunities and facilities available at the College. 20. Fire Practices The College recognises the seriousness of fire protection measures. In conjunction with advice from the Fire Service we have carried out an extensive and comprehensive fire risk assessment. Fire practices are held on a regular basis during the day and at the beginning of every term in the boarding houses. Regulations and details of evacuation procedures, together with lists of alarm and extinguisher points, are posted throughout the buildings. It is the duty of everyone to be thoroughly familiar with these. 21. Financial Matters Below is a summary of the financial obligations of a parent who has a child in the College. More comprehensive details and a copy of the Parental contract can be obtained from the Admissions Registrar or the Bursar’s Department. a. All fees are payable in advance and must be received by the Bursar, at the College, on or before the first day of each term. Alternatively, payment by monthly direct debit can be made, full details are available from the Finance Manager. Interest will be charged on any fees remaining unpaid. b. Extra Charges for examination fees, Activities involving material costs, educational outings, Music lessons, etc. will be charged at the end of the term in which they are incurred.

c. Registration Fees are not refundable but deposits paid prior to a pupil joining will be refunded against the pupil’s final bill. The final bill is for the extras incurred during the pupil’s final term, as distinct from the bill for the last of the tuition fees which is rendered at the beginning of that term. d. A full term’s notice in writing is required before the removal of a pupil or the change of status from boarding to day, otherwise a full term’s fees will be payable. The College will not accept notice for boarders in Years 11 to 13 to change their status to day pupils at half-term in the summer term. e. A term’s fees will be required from parents of a pupil who, having been formally entered and accepted for admission to the College for a particular term is subsequently withdrawn either before or at the commencement of that term. f. As fees are not refundable in the event of absence from College, School Fees Protection Insurance * can be arranged to enable such fees to be reimbursed when a pupil is absent because of illness. Health cover for pupils is also available*. g. All pupils are included in the College’s Personal Accident Insurance Scheme *. h. The attention of parents is drawn to the fact that the Insurance Policies of the College do not cover the loss of pupils’ effects. Parents’ Householders’ Comprehensive or All Risks policies should be suitably extended to give adequate cover. Alternatively, the Admission’s office can provide details of a specific policy for a Child’s Personal Possessions *. i. Music Tuition can be arranged through the Director of Music. * Details available from the Admissions Office 22. Health and Safety A full and comprehensive policy document, Rendcomb College Health and Safety Policy, outlines all guidelines that we have in place at Rendcomb; a copy of this document is available from the Bursar on request. A copy of Rendcomb’s Accessibility Policy is also available on request from the Bursar. Accident Reporting All accidents, no matter how trivial, should be reported to Sister who will be responsible for passing on details to the Works Manager. The details will be recorded by Sister and copies passed to the Works Manager. The College will comply with its reporting duties under the Reporting of Injury, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995. Whenever any of the following events occur, it must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive. (a)

The death of any person as a result of an accident arising out of or in connection with work;

(b)          

Any employee suffering any of the following injuries or conditions as a result of an accident arising out of or in connection with work: Fracture of the skull, spine or pelvis; Fracture of any bone in the arm or wrist but not a bone in the hand, or in the leg or ankle but not a bone in the foot; Amputation of a hand or foot, finger, thumb or toe, or any part thereof if the joint or bone is completely severed; Loss of sight of an eye, a penetrating injury to an eye, or a chemical or hot metal burn to an eye; Either injury (including burns) requiring immediate medical treatment or the loss of consciousness resulting in either case from electric shock from any electrical circuit or equipment, whether or not due to direct contact; Loss of consciousness resulting from lack of oxygen; Decompression sickness requiring immediate medical treatment; Either acute illness requiring treatment or loss of consciousness resulting in either case from absorption of any substance by inhalation, ingestion or through the skin; Acute illness requiring medical treatment where there is reason to believe that this resulted from exposure to a pathogen or infected materials; Any other injury, which results in the person injured being admitted immediately into hospital for more than 24 hours. (c) Any other person (including pupils, visitors, members of the public etc) suffering an injury arising out of or in connection with work resulting in hospital treatment.

Any of the dangerous occurrences as listed in the Appendix to Health and Safety Executive Leaflet HSE11 (Rev). The person at work is incapacitated for his or her normal work for more than seven consecutive days as a result of an injury ("over seven day" injury) caused by an accident at work; The death of an employee if this occurs from time after reportable injury which leads to that employee's death, but not more than one year afterwards. In the case of a death, specified major injury or condition, or a dangerous occurrence, the Health and Safety Executive must be notified immediately e.g. by telephone and this must be followed up within seven days by a written report to the Health and Safety Executive. In the case of over seven day injury to a person at work, a written report must be sent to the Health and Safety Executive within seven days of the accident on Form F2508. The College will keep records of all reportable injuries and dangerous occurrence containing the date and time of the accident causing the injury or the dangerous occurrence; and the following particulars about the person affected: full name, occupation, nature of injury or condition, place where the accident or dangerous occurrence happened and a brief description of the circumstances. The College will keep a photocopy of each completed Form F2508 in a file in order to fulfil this requirement. This file will be kept by the school’s Nurses in the Medical Centre. Maintenance of adequate accident records and the reporting of those necessary to the Health and Safety Executive will be the responsibility of Sister, who reports to the Works Manager.

The College will arrange for all accidents and "near misses" to be investigated to determine the need for any remedial action. The person responsible for deciding who shall carry out the investigation is the Works Manager. Where appropriate, a copy of the report will be made available for discussion at the next Governors’ Health and Safety Committee Meeting. The Governor responsible for Health and Safety, and the Chairman, will be informed by the HM or the Works Manager as appropriate. 23. Health Matters/Medicine Anyone employed by a school in the role of nurse must be a Registered General Nurse and therefore work within defined standards of practice. The College Nurse is therefore bound by certain codes of conduct including maintaining a pupil’s right to confidentiality regardless of their age. We have three College Nurses on site and one is always on call 24 hours a day and based in the Medical Centre when on duty. Day Pupils During the school day Sister is available to Day pupils for emergency care. Routine medical care cannot be arranged. Parents will be contacted if their child falls ill at school so they may be taken home as soon as possible. Day pupils who need to take medicine while at school must inform Sister: this excludes inhalers for asthma, which should be carried by a pupil at all times. Boarding Pupils Sister is available to boarding pupils for all aspects of their health care. Dental care should be carried out during the holidays. All boarding pupils are registered with the School Medical Officer, whose surgery is close to the College. Boarding pupils make their appointments through the Sister and may see a male or female doctor. This service is free. Boarding pupils who are ill will normally, at first, be accommodated in the Medical Centre. However if it is a prolonged illness the pupil may need to be sent home to their parents/guardians. Medication Prescribed medicines are usually administered in the Medical Centre under supervision. However a boarder may be allowed to self-medicate if they have been assessed by the Medical Centre as sufficiently responsible to do so, and the Medical Centre has given clear guidance to the pupil on when to take the medication, the possible side effects and where to keep this medication in their room. School Listener If a student needs advice or wishes to talk through a problem it is hoped that they will feel confident to talk to their Houseparent in the first instance. Clearly, it is important to engender relationships between teachers and students where this avenue of communication is possible. Obviously, there may be cases where such a conversation is either inappropriate or where a pupil may need specialist help. In the first case, he or she may speak with the College Nurse, Tutor, Chaplain or the College Medical Officer. Sometimes, students feel that they would like to talk an issue through with someone whom they do not see in an associated role in the College. All pupils

have access to the College’s Independent Listener; appointments can be made through the College Nurse or directly via e-mail. 24. Holiday and Term Dates Parents are asked to arrange their holidays during the school holidays. Where this is not possible a letter should be sent to the Headmaster requesting permission for absence from College. We do not normally allow pupils to depart early on holiday, unless there is a good reason for doing so. All boarders are expected to return on the evening prior to the commencement of terms and half terms. Boarders should not use travel as an excuse to finish term early or arrive back late: guardians should facilitate correct attendance. The College publishes their term dates a year in advance so it should be possible for parents to arrange their child’s travel early enough for them to arrive and leave on the appropriate days. 25. Home-School Relationships (incorporating Complaints Procedure) Education is a partnership between pupil, parent and teacher and all partners must fulfill their responsibilities. The responsibilities of pupils: (See also pupil handbook) The College expects pupils to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and personal qualities appropriate to adult life in a democratic society. It seeks to educate pupils to acquire the habits of:    

regular and punctual attendance at School; hard work, concentration and good behaviour, both in school lessons and in private study at school and home; "getting on with others", respect for another's point of view, warmth towards and acceptance of others and the ability to work in a team; a willingness to accept rules designed for the common good and respect for and care of other persons and property.

The responsibilities of teachers: Teachers are professionally trained to teach pupils and there must be a proper respect for their authority. They are expected to develop each pupil's abilities by effective teaching and by setting high standards in work and behaviour. The following points are felt to be particularly important in establishing good relationships. Teachers should:  have a good knowledge of all child development and its problems;  be aware where appropriate of the individual circumstances of their pupils, such as health and family background;  have a sound knowledge of employment, further education and higher education opportunities;  be willing to listen and respect the pupil's point of view and be seen to be firm but fair in reaching decisions;  never belittle or verbally or physically abuse a pupil;

consult colleagues for advice; be prepared to consult with and inform parents of problems at an early stage; not seek to be infallible, be flexible in responses to circumstances and bear in mind the good of the individual and of the College community as a whole.

The Responsibilities of Parents (See Also Terms of Parent Contract) Parents must be ready to accept that their children are being treated in a professional and responsible manner. The College welcomes enquiries in order to resolve difficulties and clear up areas of doubt. Parents' responsibilities are:  to show by their own example that they support the College in setting the highest standards and to take an active and supportive interest in their children's work and progress;  to make sure that their children come to school regularly and punctually, refreshed, alert, correctly dressed and ready to work;  to control their children's leisure-time activities and entertainments and part-time employment so that their educational progress can be supported and enhanced;  to support the authority of the College and help their children to achieve maturity,  self-discipline and self-control;  To maintain a courteous and constructive relationship with the College and our staff;  To keep the College informed of matters which may be of relevance to their children’s education and to otherwise keep in touch. Within this framework, there will be occasions when parents have concerns which need to be heard and addressed. Rendcomb College wishes to be a school where parents and pupils feel able to voice their concerns and have the school respond to them positively. Complaints Procedure This Policy is updated regularly and is available on the school website, as such parents are advised to check the published one in this area as it may have been updated since this book was published. Nonetheless below is the latest version at the time of publication of the handbook. Complaints procedure for Parents Introduction Rendcomb College takes great care with the quality of the teaching and pastoral care provided to its pupils. However, if parents do wish to make a complaint they can expect the following procedure to apply. This policy is applicable to all pupils, including those in EYFS. Working days for the purposes of this procedure shall mean working days during College term time. Stage 1 – Informal Resolution 

It is hoped that most complaints will be resolved quickly and informally.

If parents have a complaint they should normally contact their child’s Tutor in the first instance. In many cases the matter will be resolved at this level to the parents’ satisfaction. The Tutor will be expected to consult appropriately and keep written records of the action taken.



Complaints made at other levels, for example to the Head of Department, Houseparent or Deputy Head, will follow the appropriate pathways of consultation and will hopefully be resolved quickly and to the parents’ satisfaction. A written record of all complaints and the date on which they were received will be kept.



All complaints will be treated in a timely and confidential manner. Knowledge of the complaint will be limited to those directly involved.



Should the matter not be resolved in this informal way then parents are advised to proceed with the complaint in accordance with stage 2.

Stage 2 – Formal Resolution 

If the complaint cannot be or is not being resolved on an informal basis, then the parents may put their complaint in writing to the Headmaster or Junior School Head.



The Head will respond to the parent concerned within five working days, or as soon as reasonably practicable during school holidays, indicating how the College proposes to proceed.



It may be necessary for the Head to carry out further investigations. Written records will be kept of all meetings and interviews held in relation to the complaint.



Once the Head is satisfied that, so far as is practicable, all of the relevant facts have been established, a decision will be made within 5 working days thereafter (or as soon as reasonably practicable during school holidays) and the parents will be informed of this decision, and the reasoning behind it, in writing.



For pupils in EYFS, parents must be informed of the outcome of the investigation within 28 days of making the complaint. The record of complaints must be made available to Ofsted and ISI on request.



It is hoped that parents will feel satisfied with the outcome, or that, at least, all of the concerns raised by the parents have been fully and fairly considered. If, in extreme circumstances, parents are not satisfied they may, if they wish, proceed with an appeal to the Chair of the Governors.

Stage 3 – Appeal to the Governors 

Where parents are not satisfied with the response to their complaint under Stage 2, or alternatively where the parents’ complaint relates to the Head’s own actions, parents should write to the Bursar in her role as Clerk to the Governors directly. Any letter should

set out their grounds of appeal/complaint and should (where appropriate) be delivered to the Bursar within 5 working days of receipt of the Head’s decision at Stage 2 above. 

The Bursar will acknowledge the complaint and within 5 working days refer the matter to a Complaints Panel for consideration. The Complaints Panel will be appointed by the Chair of the Governors and consist of at least three people with one of them being independent of the management and running of the College. The members of the Panel should have no connection to the pupil or the family concerned. The Chair of the Panel will then acknowledge the complaint and schedule a hearing to take place within 20 working days.



If the Panel deems it necessary, it may require that further particulars of the complaint/appeal and any relevant documents or records be supplied in advance of the panel meeting. Copies of such particulars shall be supplied to all parties wherever practicable not later than 3 working days prior to this meeting.



The Chair of the Panel shall determine how the appeal proceedings are to be conducted. If there is a hearing the parents concerned as well as representatives of the College should be invited to speak. Parents may be accompanied to the hearing. This may be a relative, teacher or friend. Legal representation of either party will not normally be appropriate.



If possible the Panel will resolve the parents’ complaint immediately without the need for further investigation.



Where further investigation is required, the Panel will decide how it should be carried out. This process shall be completed within 10 working days of the Hearing.



After completion of any further investigation and due consideration of all facts the Panel’s findings and recommendations will be sent in writing to the Chair of the Governors who will reach and communicate his decision. A copy of the Panel’s findings and recommendations and the Chair’s decision will be sent by electronic mail or otherwise given to the Parents and the Head (and where relevant to the person complained about) within 5 working days of receipt by the Chair of the Panel’s findings and recommendations.



A record of all complaints and whether they are resolved at the formal or Appeal stage, including findings and recommendations, will be kept at the College for inspection by the Governors.



Correspondence, statements and records will be kept confidential except where the Secretary of State (in practice DfE) or a body conducting an inspection under section 162A of the 2002 Act requests access to them; or where any other legal obligation prevails.



For EYFS pupils, parents may approach Ofsted or ISI directly at any stage of this complaints procedure. In addition, where there seems to be a possible breach of the

If a pupil needs advice or wants to talk over a problem he/she has ready access to his/her Tutor and his/her Houseparents or Assistant Houseparents, as well as Heads of Key Stages, accompanied by a friend or another member of staff if he or she wishes. He or she may also consult in confidence one of the College Doctors, the College Chaplain or the College Listener (a trained expert on adolescent problems). In any context, pupil making a complaint in good faith can always expect the complaint to be taken seriously and for it to be investigated and dealt with thoroughly. A timeframe should be established at the start of any investigation. Any pupil needing to make a formal complaint should, in the first instance, always make the complaint to the Tutor or, at least, make the nature of the complaint known to him/her; this complaint should be in writing, clearly outlining the concerns that the pupil has.If the complaint is regards the Tutor then the pupil should take their complaint to the Head of Key stage or Houseparent. The person to whom the letter is addressed will acknowledge the letter within three days of the complaint being made, informing the pupil that the complaint is being investigated and that they will inform the Second Master of the complaint. The pupil will then be invited to talk the matter through with the person to whom the letter was addressed and may have a friend or member of staff with them. The person whom the pupil had contacted (see above) will, if necessary investigate the complaint. They will then arrange a further meeting with the pupil and advise the pupil about what course of action seems sensible. At that stage, it is up to the pupil to make a decision, acting upon that advice. If the complaint is resolved, the person dealing with it will formally record the complaint with the Second Master providing details of the date, the nature of the complaint, the action taken and the outcome with any supporting documentation. If the matter needs to be taken further by the complainant 1. because it cannot be satisfactorily resolved at the levels stated above; 2. because it involves a matter that could provoke a disciplinary process; - the complaint should be brought before the Second Master. In the case of a complaint about a member of staff which could provoke a disciplinary process, the Headmaster should be consulted immediately and he/she will decide whether the Disciplinary Policy and Procedures will need to be followed. All such complaints will also be recorded with details of the date, nature of the complaint, the action taken and the outcome with any supporting documentation. Procedures concerning matters of Safeguarding are detailed elsewhere in the Safeguarding Policy.

26. Homework/Prep Prep is both important and necessary. It provides the opportunity for pupils to consolidate and extend the material covered in a lesson. It is essential for background research and it is vital for improving overall understanding. Prep done regularly throughout secondary school can be equivalent to an additional year of study! Prep should be a pupil’s own work and should be done under conditions that allow for complete concentration. In Years 7 to 11 a Prep Timetable operates and pupils are informed of this on the first day of term. All preps are expected to last 30 minutes: Year 7 have one Prep for each weeknight from Maths, English, Science and the Languages. Independent reading is also monitored by the English Department; Year 8 have one or two Preps for each weeknight from Maths, English, Science and the Languages. Independent reading is also monitored by the English Department; Year 9 pupils have two or three Preps set for each weeknight; Years 10 & 11 have up to 4 Preps set each weeknight but Controlled Assessments may require additional time. The Prep Timetable helps to organise pupils’ work and time. Parents should sign the Prep Diary every week. It is also a mechanism by which parents can comment on the work set or inform teachers of problems. In the Sixth Form, there is no Prep Timetable as we prepare young people for the working world beyond Rendcomb. However, it is envisaged each student will spend four hours per week per subject on Prep. Preps may be set over a longer period and it is the student’s responsibility to organise his or her time to ensure deadlines are met: this private study work will be conducted in their non-timetabled lessons as well as after school. Once external examinations begin, many pupils find they have to commit some time at the weekend to complete their work. There are supervised Prep sessions available at College in the Activities programme for day pupils. It is strongly recommended that day pupils with long journeys attempt to use some of these. Rendcomb encourages students to be academically reliable. Pupils must make every effort to produce homework on time. If they cannot organise themselves to do this, they must expect to have to stay in at lunchtime or after school to complete the work. It would be wise to treat the statement ‘I have not got any Prep’ with a degree of scepticism; there is never enough time in a School career to consolidate and read around subjects as effectively as one might wish to do!

27. In loco parentis This describes the responsibilities of a teacher towards a pupil. Whilst a child is in a teacher’s care, some of the privileges of the natural parent are transferred to the teacher so that he or she may carry out his or her duties. The teacher must behave as would a ‘responsible’ adult. 28. Learning Support DEFINITION “Children have a learning difficulty if they have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age, or have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in schools within the area of the local education authority.” *(Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 1:3, DfES Nov 2001 )* OBJECTIVES  To apply a whole school policy to meeting each pupil’s individual needs following the guidelines of the SEN Code of Practice.  To identify, at the earliest opportunity, any pupil who may have special educational needs.  To maintain a ‘Pupils with Learning Difficulties’ Register.  To ensure that all relevant staff are aware for each pupil’s needs so that his/her needs may be met in the mainstream classroom.  To provide pastoral care and support for the pupils with learning difficulties so that they may develop in all areas and build a strong sense of self-esteem.  To maintain a confidential file for each pupil containing all relevant reports which shall be available to staff who are directly involved with the child.  To conduct regular reviews of each pupil’s progress and to their general development.  To maintain close links with parents at all times.  To provide regular INSET programme to the teaching staff. Providing INSET as appropriate

Learning Support Specialism The school exists primarily as one which prepares pupils for GCSEs, AS and A levels. As such, it is a school which maintains a strong academic tradition and would not be suitable for pupils with below-average ability. The school makes provision for a range of learning difficulties, but the department is particularly suited to supporting a limited number of pupils with mild to moderate specific learning difficulties. IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT A pupil’s needs may become apparent through: - teaching within the classroom - screening procedures - expression of parental concerns In the case of a school-based assessment, background information is sought from the parents and class teacher. An assessment is normally conducted by the Head of Learning Support at time suitable to the pupil. Such in-school assessments normally include: - reading tests - spelling tests - VRQ - maths assessment Recommendations for a support programme are made and are discussed with parents. All relevant staff are informed of the assessment and action is taken. Pupils will normally receive one support lesson a week. PROVISION Timetabling So as to ensure that all pupils have access to a broadly based curriculum and, in particular core subjects, pupils are normally withdrawn from lessons on a rotational basis. The timetable is carefully drawn up to take account of the pupil’s preferences and strengths, the advice of staff members and parents. Support Programmes Each pupil will follow an individual programme at his/her pace. The programmes for each pupil will be devised by the specialist teacher and the pupil’s subject teachers. Specific support with mathematics is also given where appropriate. Revision and examination techniques and study skills are also introduced as pupils need them.

Individual Pupil Profiles (IPP’s) These have been introduced to support the subject teacher. The aim is to make sure that the subject teachers are fully aware of the problems faced by these pupils and the profile incorporates suggestions as to how teachers can help them. They are updated as and when the students support provision requires changes. Bridging the gap between individual lessons and the classroom There is a close liaison between the Learning Support department and the subject teachers so that the skills learned in a one-to-one session can be encouraged in the classroom. Classroom tasks can also form the basis for introducing study skills and revision. Specific requests from a subject teacher to help a student with a particular piece of work are encouraged. INTEGRATION The pupils with learning difficulties are fully integrated within the school as a whole. All staff and pupils know which pupils receive support in an atmosphere of understanding and encouragement. Exam Procedures Special arrangements for school and public examinations are made for pupils with learning difficulties. Close liaison with the Examinations Officer is vital in making arrangements for public examinations. The school has the ability to award up to 25% extra time in examinations for a specific learning difficulty, following a recommendation from a qualified assessor. Also arrangements for the use of a computer and amanuensis can be made as required. We have a qualified specialist teacher within the department who can assess pupils for Access Arrangements. Pupils who have been identified as needing extra time are given this allowance in the school summer examinations and mock examinations. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Considerable attention is paid to the pupil’s overall development and progress. It is the school’s aim that every child should develop a strong sense of self-esteem through playing an important role within the classroom, on the sports field, in the music and drama departments, and within the community in general. REPORTS Parents are formally informed of the pupil’s progress each term, but will be contacted and kept informed of all progress and changes immediately. INSET

All staff at the school attend regular conferences and training days in their own specialism. There are also INSET days held at school on topics of general concern. Learning difficulties are included in this general programme. The Head of Learning Support will contribute to these sessions. 29. Lost Property Every item of personal possession including bags, books, clothing and footwear must be marked with the owner’s name. It is also advised that no items of unnecessary or expensive kit are brought into the College. Pupils should make every effort to find the property for themselves before reporting the loss. Property may have been handed into Reception or to the Second Master so pupils should check with them prior to reporting that they have lost their property. Books and kit left untended in inappropriate places will be confiscated and treated as lost property. 30. Messages/contacting pupils While it is recognised in today’s world that most pupils have mobile phones the College expects pupils to only use them in their House areas. If pupils are seen using them in the College grounds or in class, without permission, during the school day they could find their phones confiscated. Thus we would ask parents to refrain from contacting their child during the school day except during their ‘free’ time and ideally only in an emergency. If a parent is struggling to contact their child and wishes to pass on a message to their child then they should contact Reception during the school day, which will make every effort to pass it on as soon as possible. In the evening the appropriate boarding house would be the first point of contact. 31. Music Instrumental lessons Learning a musical instrument can be fun and rewarding, and for many, provides lifelong enjoyment. Facilities at Rendcomb are excellent, and instrumental tuition is available to everyone. Pupils can take examinations and get certificates of achievement, which at a higher level can contribute UCAS points to support a university application; learning an instrument can also benefit those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme; or if they prefer, they can just learn for pleasure. Real progress will depend on the amount of time pupils are willing to spend practising in their own time. Pupils should consider this and discuss it with parents, or a friend who learns an instrument, before starting to learn. The Director of Music is always on hand to give advice. Music lessons are timetabled on a weekly basis and, for most students, occur in place of academic lessons. Subject teachers expect to be given advance warning that a pupil will miss their lesson, and should be prepared to complete any work set. To avoid missing too many of the same subject, instrumental lesson times change each week, although for 6th Form, instrumental lessons take place in free periods. Timetables are published on Fridays in the Music Department and are distributed to the Houses. If a lesson needs to be changed after publication, the pupil will be informed of the new lesson time via the Houseparent. If for any reason a pupil is unable to attend a timetabled lesson, it is

expected that, at the earliest opportunity, the pupil will make time to find either their instrumental teacher or the Director of Music to explain the absence. Parents are informed about missed lessons, which are always charged for. Music Ensembles There are many music ensembles and groups for pupils to join at no cost, and pupils don't have to take instrumental lessons within College to be a part of them. The groups include College Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, Ukulele Group and various Rock Bands, as well as Aural classes to complement the work done in instrumental lessons working towards practical examinations, Theory classes, and Composition Club. This list is pretty exhaustive, but we are always open to suggestions for new groups to form, so pupils are encouraged to come forward if they have a burning desire to start a new one! Concerts Each term, a variety of concerts provide all students with the opportunity to perform in public in informal and formal settings. Pupils should check the termly calendar and Music Department notice board for details on how to get involved. 32. Off Games and Games Arrangements We see involvement in sports, at whatever standard, as an important part of pupil’s educational experiences. Pupils can learn a great deal about leadership, team work, team building, personal fitness and health through their involvement in the School’s games programme. It can also develop within them the ability to cope with success and failure in a competitive environment and a sense of fair play. Game of the Term for Boys – Rugby, Hockey, Cricket. Game of the Term for Girls – Hockey, Lacrosse, Tennis or Rounders. As mentioned earlier all Sports Scholars are expected to take part in the ‘Game of the Term’ throughout their time at Rendcomb College. Pupils in Years 7 to 11 play the Game of the Term on one afternoon of the week and on a Saturday regardless if they are in the team or not. However for 6th form pupils there is a much wider choice of options: Game of the Term continues but for both Girls and Boys there are other options available such as Fitness, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Soccer. Although there is this choice, a 6th former who has represented the College in a particular sport on a regular basis in earlier years will be expected to continue to play and represent the College in that Sport. If a 6th former is not in a team they do not normally have games on a Saturday. School Matches are primarily on Saturday afternoons. Any pupils selected to represent the School are expected to make themselves available and do so. Other matches may occur on Games afternoons in the week and occasionally there are tournaments in some sports on a Sunday.

Off Games Procedures 

  

Pupils should go to the Medical Centre before 8.30am on a games day if they need to be put off games (Day pupils should bring with them a letter from home or parents should communicate directly with the College Nurse in the Medical Centre). ONLY IN AN EMERGENCY, should they go after 8.30am. In this case, unless they are detained in the Centre, they will be given an Off Games Slip which they must present as soon as possible to the teacher in charge of their game. No pupil is off games without reporting to the Medical Centre. In a real emergency, another pupil must report on his/her behalf. All pupils put off games must attend the library at the beginning of their games periods unless they are detained in the Medical Centre, in House for 6th formers, or they have permission from the teacher in charge of their game to watch the games session/match. 33. Open Day The College has two major Open Day for the Senior School, during which prospective pupils of all ages and their parents/guardians are invited to see the College. Each prospective pupil, and their parents, are taken around the College by senior pupils. There is also a Sixth Form Taster Evening for those interested specifically in joining the Sixth Form both from outside and from our own own Year groups. Information on our Open Days and Sixth Form Taster Evening can be found by contacting the Admissions Registrar. 34. Parents Association - RCPA All parents belong and pay a small subscription. There is a committee which is elected at the AGM in and meet regularly. The Parents' Association provides a sounding board for Headmaster, Bursar and staff representatives, and organises social and fund-raising events. The committee welcome suggestions for suitable projects as fund-raising targets. The RCPA’s aim is primarily to organise fundraising events which then go towards financing projects in the College. Events include supporting Fireworks’ Night, organising Balls and smallscale social and fund-raising events. The committee welcome suggestions for suitable projects as fund-raising targets. Informal contact at such occasions is invaluable, and is greatly appreciated by our parents who often choose Rendcomb because we are approachable and welcoming. The RCPA can also be called upon on occasions to provide a sounding board for Headmaster, Bursar and staff representatives. The Chair of the RCPA and the Headmaster have regular and purposeful meetings.

35. Parents Evenings and other social events for parents A parents evening for each age group is scheduled at an appropriate time throughout the year. These are primarily academic discussions between pupil, teacher and parent. The College, at the older age groups, does expect the pupil to be present on these occasions. Parents are asked to recognise that these sessions provide a short 5-minute opportunity to discuss your child’s academic performance. If you require a longer session then parents are asked to contact the relevant member of staff and organise a mutually agreed time for further discussion. There are also other events for some year groups to provide further educational information. On a social aspect there are several events organised by the Boarding Houses which enable parents to meet each other and staff in a less formal environment. 36. Parking – Dropping off/Picking up Traffic is an issue around the College and village and we would respectfully ask parents to drive with care when coming to the College. In the morning pupils should be dropped off at their respective houses before 8.15am, Monday to Friday, while on Saturday pupils should be dropped off before 9.00am. Similarly picking up at the end of the normal school day should be from the pupil’s house. This is often an excellent time to have a brief conversation with the Housemaster/mistress if needed. If you are delivering your child to College after the official start of the day then you must drop them off at reception so they can sign-in. Similarly if you need to pick them up before the end of the school day then you should do so from reception so they can sign-out. 37. Pastoral Organisation Rendcomb College has a reputation for pastoral care. Each student has a tutor to look after all aspects of their welfare at school. These tutors are in turn supported by a Head of Key Stage and a Houseparent, who has overall responsibility for the welfare of a House. Every Year group has a team of tutors who each look after a set of no more than fifteen tutees, although in the 6th form the tutor groups are significantly smaller. The tutor and Head of Key Stage and Houseparent will normally see the pupil through a key stage in their development. Thus in the case of a child entering at 11+ he/she would expect to be looked after by the same team in Years 7 to 9. They would then have a new team in Year 10, which would see them through to the end of their GCSE course. In the Sixth Form pupils would again have a new team which would help them through their A level courses and with the UCAS process (applying to Universities), however due to the size of the 6th form some of Year 12 could still have the same Houseparent as they had in their GCSE years. The rotational system allows for continuity in key areas, whereas the changing teams allow for staff specialisation in important areas, especially with the approach of external examinations.

38. Physical restraint All schools are obliged to have a policy that is known to staff, pupils and parents concerning the very few occasions when the use of physical restraint by a teacher on a pupil would be both justified and necessary. Rendcomb College has such a policy that has been discussed with all staff on the basis of the guidelines issued by the DFES to accompany the provisions of the 1996 Education Act. The Act forbids corporal punishment, but allows all teachers to use reasonable force to prevent a pupil from:    

committing a criminal offence; injuring themselves or others; damaging property; acting in a way that is counter to maintaining good order and discipline at the school.

The Act does not cover more extreme cases, such as action in self-defence or in an emergency, when it might be reasonable for someone to use a degree of force. Staff other than teachers are also able to use force if necessary in the situations as above, provided they have been authorised by the head teacher to have control or charge of pupils. The school will keep detailed and up-to-date records of any incidents where force is used. It will always inform parents of such an incident and allow them an opportunity to discuss it. Records of such incidents will include the following information:    

the name(s) of the pupil(s) involved; when and where the incident took place; why the use of force was deemed necessary; details of the incident, including all steps taken to diffuse the situation and resolve it; without force and the nature of the force used;  the pupil’s response;  the outcome of the incident;  a description of any injuries suffered by the pupil or others and/or any property damaged during the incident. The following contains extracts from the advice given by the DFES Types of Incidents There are a wide variety of situations in which reasonable force might be appropriate, or necessary, to control or restrain a pupil. They will fall into three broad categories: a. where action is necessary in self-defence or because there is an imminent risk of injury; b. where there is a developing risk of injury, or significant damage to property; c. where a pupil is behaving in a way that is compromising good order and discipline.

Examples of situations that fall within one of the first two categories are a pupil attacks a member of staff, or another pupil; pupils are fighting; a pupil is engaged in, or is on the verge of committing, deliberate damage or vandalism to property; a pupil is causing, or at risk of causing, injury or damage by accident, by rough play, or by misuse of dangerous materials or objects; a pupil is running in a corridor or on a stairway in a way in which he or she might have or cause an accident likely to injure him or herself or others a pupil absconds from a class or tries to leave school (N.B. this will only apply if a pupil could be at risk if not kept in the classroom or at school). Examples of situations that fall into the third category are: a pupil persistently refuses to obey an order to leave a classroom or a pupil is behaving in a way that is seriously disrupting a lesson. Reasonable Force There is no legal definition of `reasonable force'. Therefore, it is not possible to set out comprehensively when it is reasonable to use force, or the degree of force that may reasonably be used. It will always depend on all the circumstances of the case. There are two relevant considerations: the use of force can be regarded as reasonable only if the circumstances of the particular incident warrant it. The use of any degree of force is unlawful if the particular circumstances do not warrant the use of physical force. Therefore physical force could not be justified to prevent a pupil from committing a trivial misdemeanour, or in a situation that clearly could be resolved without force. The degree of force employed must be in proportion to the circumstances of the incident and the seriousness of the behaviour or the consequences it is intended to prevent. Any force used should always be the minimum needed to achieve the desired result. Whether it is reasonable to use force, and the degree of force that could reasonably be employed, might also depend on the age, understanding, and sex of the pupil. Search powers The Headmaster and members of staff authorised by the Headmaster can use such force as is reasonable to conduct a search for the following ‘prohibited items’:        

Knives and weapons Alcohol Illegal drugs Stolen items Tobacco and cigarette papers Fireworks Pornographic images Any article that has been or is likely to be used to commit an offence, cause personal injury or damage to property.

Any search will be conducted in accordance with the College’s Behaviour Policy and the Department for Education’s guidance ‘Screening, Searching and Confiscation’. Reasonable force cannot be used to search for items banned under the School Rules. Records The College will keep records of any occasion where physical intervention is used. Complaints Any physical contact or the use of force could lead to parental and/or pupil complaints, allegations of abuse resulting in investigation either under disciplinary procedures or child protection procedures with the possibility of a disciplinary hearing, a criminal prosecution or a civil action. Suspension will not be an automatic response when a member of staff has been accused or using excessive force. The College has a duty of care towards employees and will carefully consider whether the circumstances of the case warrant a person being suspended until the allegation is resolved or whether there are more appropriate alternative arrangements. The College’s procedure on dealing with Allegations of Abuse against Staff contained in the Safeguarding of Children (Child Protection) policy will be followed. In any case of disciplinary action, the policies and procedures of the College will be followed. 39. Phones and other Mobile Devices The College does recognise the need for pupils to communicate with their parents and see the value of mobile phones in protecting pupils, however if they do bring a phone in to school they must remember that, it is important that mobile phones, iPods and similar technological equipment do not distract from learning. Below is the guide set out in the Pupil handbook:     

Pupils are allowed to bring in their own Mobile phones, iPods, etc and use them in their houses; they may not be used around the School grounds, in the Main Building or other classroom areas, without specific permission from the member of staff in charge. Music should only be played during permitted times, and at a low enough volume not to cause disturbance to others. Any pupil using their Mobile phone, iPod etc. around the College site may find it is confiscated for a period of time. It is the pupils responsibility to ensure electronic items such as iPods and phones are kept in a secure area when left in the house. For the use of tablets and laptop computers see the separate section.

40. Prep Diaries All pupils are issued with a Prep Diary at the start of the year. In this there are some expectations set out regarding Classroom Behaviour, Homework/Prep, which are also included in the Pupil Handbook under Behavioural Policy. 41. Reception/Main Office Reception is manned from 8.00am in the morning until 5.15pm in the afternoon from Monday to Friday, while on Saturday it is manned from 8.30am to 12.30pm. All visitors to the College are expected to go to Reception at the first instance. They will then contact the person they wish to see. 42. Removal and Expulsion of a Pupil The full Exclusion Policy is available on request and as a school we hope that you will never have the need to read it, however below is the introduction to the Policy for information: Every pupil at Rendcomb, irrespective of age, is required, as a condition of staying in the College, to maintain an acceptable standard of work and conduct and must abide by the College’s Behavioural Policy. Where good standards of conduct are not maintained by pupils, it may be necessary to take a disciplinary line, including exclusion from the College in the most serious cases. The responsibility for serious disciplinary matters and exclusions rests with the Headmaster and the Second Master. However, Houseparents have a key role in addressing bad behaviour by pupils. The Headmaster has the right to exclude or suspend any pupil if it should appear to his judgement (after appropriate consultation) to be in the best interests of the pupil not to remain at the College or in the best interests of the College The process outlined in this policy is intended to ensure that any exclusion is dealt with in an entirely fair and transparent way. The Headmaster has the right to treat as a breach of College discipline behaviour during the holidays of a pupil's school career which is liable to bring Rendcomb into disrepute. The Headmaster may also at his discretion require a parent to remove or may suspend or expel a pupil if the behaviour of either parent or pupil is in the opinion of the Headmaster unreasonable and affects or is likely to affect adversely the child’s or other children’s progress at the College or the well-being of staff or to bring the College into disrepute. The Headmaster will inform the Chair of Governors if he feels that he might need to explore excluding a pupil. Parents/Guardians have the right to remove their child from the College at any time; however, they will not be entitled to any refund or remission of fees or supplemental charges due (whether paid or payable). Provided parents have given a term’s notice to withdraw their child they will not be charged fees in lieu of notice but they will forfeit the deposit. The College Behaviour Policy sets out examples of offences likely to be punishable by suspension or expulsion. These examples are not exhaustive, and in particular the Headmaster may decide that suspension or expulsion for a lesser offence is justified where there has been previous misbehaviour. Usually, in such instances, the Headmaster will already have issued a Final Warning Letter. All aspects of the pupil’s record at the College may be taken into account.

In certain circumstances, the suspected offence may be so serious that a specific process of investigation may be deemed appropriate. For example, the Headmaster may exclude any pupil for possessing, using or supplying any illicit drug or other harmful substance at any point during their school career. Accordingly, the Headmaster may require any pupil to submit an appropriate test whether on suspicion of the use of illicit drugs or other harmful substances, or otherwise at his sole discretion, and may countenance a search to be carried out of any pupil's personal possessions or room, if appropriate. 43. Reports and Grades Grades a. Grades occur approximately every half term throughout the year. b. Grade Sheets are completed by staff by the publicised date. c. Grade cards will be issued by Tutors and grades will be given to pupils in the tutorial lesson following the publication of grades. d. For each subject a pupil will receive three grades, one for attainment, one for effort in class and one for effort on Homework. Reports Reports are an important means of communicating with parents and of commenting as fully and as frankly as possible on the process and welfare of their children. Pupils receive a Full Report or a Short Report at cetain times of the year, however depending on the year group they are in they may receive a Grades Summary rather than a report at the end of term. 44. Safeguarding (Child Protection) Rendcomb College fully recognises its responsibilities for safeguarding children (child protection). This policy is made available via the parental handbook and on request. This policy is reviewed on an annual basis by Governors and is available on the school Website and by request. Due to the regulatory of changes to the Policy in accordance with Government legislation the policy is not published here. 45. Weather – school policy for extreme weather The College publishes a letter annually with regards the way we communicate decisions to close the school due to bad weather. However if the weather deteriorates overnight, we will aim to make a decision by 0600 to inform you if the College is closed. There will be a message on the College voicemail so please ring in to check as well as on the school website before travelling. If the school has to close during the school day then all pupils will be held in their houses until you can pick your child up. If you have difficulties getting to the school then we will continue to look after your child until you can get to the school, as we do have a boarding community to look after as well. If the school is closed for a significant period then staff will ensure work is set on our VLE which all pupils can access via the internet. While the school is closed boarders who are local can go home if they choose to do so and can be picked up. However the school remains open for the boarding community and will continue to function, including catering and housekeeping, although no doubt on a reduced staffing since some live offsite.
