Hampton is the No. 15 seed in the Norfolk Region, while Duke, ranked fifth in the nation in both polls, is the No. 2 seed. THE SERIES Hampton is 0-4 all-time against Duke; the Lady Pirates last met the Blue Devils in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, falling 72-37. Prior to the 2010 meeting, the two teams had not met since the 2033-04 season. FOUR IN A ROW In David Six’s first four years as head coach, the Lady Pirates have won four straight MEAC Tournament championships —- as well as the last three MEAC regular-season titles. LADY PIRATES AMONG VIRGINIA’S BEST Since David Six’s arrival at Hampton, the Lady Pirates have been one of the best programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia — better than such programs as Old Dominion, Virginia, Richmond, and Liberty. On top of three straight MEAC Tournament titles, back-to-back MEAC regular season titles, and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the Lady Pirates are serving notice throughout Virginia. Over the past three seasons, Hampton has the second-best record among Virginia’s Div. I women’s basketball programs, trailing only James Madison — last year’s WNIT runner-up and a perennial contender in the Colonial Athletic Association. 2012-13 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LADY PIRATES ODDS AND ENDS BACK HOME AGAIN — AND LOCKING PEOPLE DOWN For junior forward Alyssa Bennett, coming to Hampton University didn’t just allow her to play basketball at the Div. I level — it was a homecoming of sorts as well. A native of Hampton, Va., Bennett played her high school ball at Hampton High School, then led by current Lady Pirates head coach David Six.

LIVING ON DEFENSE: ONE OF THE NATION’S BEST During the tenure of head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates have established themselves as one of the best defensive teams not only in the MEAC, but in all of Division I.

AVANT: MEAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR Senior forward Keiara Avant is the Lady Pirates’ top returning rebounder, coming off a 2011-12 campaign in which she averaged 7.9 rebounds and 7.7 points per game. She had nine double-doubles last season, including five in the last eight games of the season.

Six is just one win shy of 100 for his career after the Lady Pirates beat Howard 59-38 in Saturday’s MEAC title game against Howard; he is 9929 for his career. So far, Six’s career winning percentage is the best in Div. I program history and second overall to the legendary James Sweat, who won 82.1 percent of his games with the Lady Pirates from 1981-88.

Hampton was second in the nation in scoring defense last season, behind only Connecticut, allowing just 47.6 points per game. The Lady Bennett is averaging 10.2 points per game this season, despite missing Pirates held 24 opponents under 60 points last season, while 19 oppotwo games — including a 70-59 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 24. nents didn’t ever crack the 50-point mark.
