Philosophy The athletic experience is an essential part of many students’ overall education. Athletics plays a significant role in developing positive self-esteem and a sense of well-being. Middle school students are experiencing a time in their lives of tremendous growth and change. They often get excited, confused, argumentative, curious, sensitive and self-conscious. In sports and other extracurricular activities they will learn the value of fair play and sportsmanship. They are to be given the chance to participate and be allowed to make mistakes. They will learn to appreciate teamwork and how to deal with coaches, referees, opponents, peers and themselves.

Mission Responsibilities of the Head Coach include understanding the philosophy of the school and the athletic department and understanding the role of athletics at Hampton Academy. Each Head Coach should have the ability to articulate his or her personal coaching philosophy as it pertains to the school’s philosophy.

Role Model The coach is responsible for setting an example for his or her players and setting the tone for the program. A coach who behaves professionally will encourage others around him or her to do the same. They must exhibit proper leadership and conduct, be fair and consistent disciplinarians, show respect to opponents and officials, and coach every player on their team. The Head Coach must be a strong, positive, respectful role model for his/her athletes by being a consistent ambassador of the game and of Hampton Academy. All coaches are expected to have an understanding of the Seacoast Athletic Association’s rules and regulations governing their sport. These will be provided to each coach at the beginning of the season.

Student Eligibility Once an athlete has been cleared for tryouts academically by administration, (refer to Hampton School District Policy JJIC appendix A) the coach must ensure that all athletes have turned in their physical forms, medical cards, athletic contracts and any other documents the coach may require, such as team rules and expectations. No student may participate without a current physical on file with the school nurse. Coaches will be held accountable if a student is allowed to participate without a physical on file. (refer to Hampton School District Policy JLCA appendix B) Each athlete must be passing all subjects from the previous marking term with a C or better and maintain a 75% or better for the duration of the season to continue on the team. Students may be asked to attend after school homework -4-

club to improve grades. Students must have an attendance rate of 80% or better from the previous marking term and throughout the season or period of activity. Students who accumulate a combination of five or more detentions and/or suspensions during the current school year will be ineligible to participate on athletic teams.

Tryouts Coaches must keep an attendance tryout log of all students and a grading sheet of the evaluation process. Expectation for tryouts must be clearly communicated to the student before the start of tryouts. This can be accomplished by holding an informational meeting before tryouts to set clear expectations.

Attendance Coaches are expected to be on time for all games, practices and any other events. If your game or practice does not start immediately after the school day ends, students need to know where they are supposed to be until a coach arrives. Coaches are also expected to remain with the students at all times. This includes waiting until the last student has been picked up by the parent or guardian at the end of practices, games and other events. When visibly present it eliminates many behavioral and safety issues. Please keep an eye on students at all times. Students are expected to be on time to all practices, games and other events. Students must be in school at least half of the school day to be eligible to participate on that day. Students may attend homework club, make up class work or attend other school related events and be considered an excused absence. Students must clearly communicate to coaches before this occurs. Coaches must keep a log of all attendance records for the students. Coaches become responsible for their players as soon as the player shows up to practice or games. If a coach is sick or has an emergency the day of a practice or event, the coach is required to call the school office at 926-2000, the office will notify the students and athletic director of the cancellation. In the event of a game and cancelling is not an option, notify the assistant coach of the situation so that the practice or event is covered. If you do not have an assistant coach, please call the school office and the athletic director will be notified to ensure the game is covered.

Player Safety The safety and protection of the players on the team is the primary duty of a coach at any level. The coach must provide a safe environment for athletes during all team activities. Coaches must keep the health and safety of their players as the main focus during practice sessions and when managing game strategy. Head coaches must have knowledge related to fitness and conditioning, general health habits and expertise in their sport area -5-

Student Conduct/Sportsmanship Behavior and appearance are of great importance. Our middle school students are ambassadors of Hampton Academy. They represent the school in the public and their behavior frequently determines the opinion that outsiders have of our school. As a coach it is your responsibility to teach students what is expected of them. It is the coach’s responsibility to clearly communicate behavioral expectations during games, bus rides and at other events. These expectations must be consistent and communicated proactively. Look for the positive things students do and avoid sarcasm and ridicule. Demonstrate for the team how to win graciously and lose without complaining or criticizing the officials, other players or coaches. (refer to Hampton School District Policy JJIF appendix C)

Coaches Conduct/Sportsmanship All coaches are expected to conduct his or herself in a professional manner. Coaches MUST be a positive role model due to the influence you have over your student athletes. Coaches are required to report any technical fouls received for unsportsmanlike conduct to the athletic director. If the incident involved a coach demonstrating poor behavior, the principal will determine appropriate action to be taken. (refer to Hampton School District Policy JJIF appendix C)

Parent/Spectator Conduct Parents and any other spectators are expected to behave appropriately while in attendance. They are expected to allow the coach to coach the players and remain positive to all players, coaches, referees and fans of both teams in attendance. Please report any acts of inappropriate behavior to the athletic director or principal.

Parent/Player Communication Good communication between coaches, players, parents and the athletic director is expected. Please take time with players and parents if they have questions or concerns. This should take place outside of game/practice time at the convenience of all parties. If the support of administration or the athletic director is needed during a parent or player meeting, please let us know so we can schedule a meeting time. The coach must provide all athletes with a season game and practice schedule. Game schedules will also be posted on usatodayhss.com. Any practices or events held outside of the normal school week must be optional and not held against the athlete if they choose not to participate. Please notify the athletic director if outside events are scheduled. Practices need to be kept to a reasonable length, lasting no more than two hours maximum. Water breaks must be provided frequently during practice. -6-

It is highly recommended to obtain emails from parents and create a team email list. This has proved to be extremely effective for communicating with athletes’ families in the past.

Volunteer Coaches Volunteer coaches are a welcome addition to our programs. They serve an important role and perform more efficiently when they work under the supervision or guidance of the head coach. All volunteer coaches require a background check before they can be involved in assisting coaches. Background check appointments can be scheduled at the SAU 90 office at Marston school by contacting them at 926-4560. Coaches must notify the athletic director of any potential volunteers you have assisting the team.

Injuries All injuries should be reported immediately and will be treated. All injuries shall be reported using the Injury Report Form contained in the athletic medical kit. Please fill this out and return it to the athletic director and/or nurse. The coach will call the parent to let them know of the injury. Parent contact information is on the medical cards. If a concussion is suspected due to a blow to the head, please refer to the concussion checklist in the medical kit. Take note of all symptoms. Please call the parent immediately and notify the athletic director. (refer to Hampton School District Policy JLCJ appendix D).

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Alcohol, tobacco and any other drug use are prohibited on school grounds and while attending any school sponsored events. Working under the influence, no matter where it is consumed is also prohibited. (refer to Hampton School District Policy ADB appendix E)

Training It is expected that all coaches will obtain training in first-aid, CPR and concussions. The Hampton School District will provide opportunities for training during the school year. Concussion training can be obtained on the NFHSlearn.com website as a free training course. Please provide the athletic director with certificates of training to keep on file. It is also expected that coaches will have a general knowledge of the sport they are coaching pertaining to rules, skills and conditioning techniques.

Keys and Access to Building Building security is always a concern. All external coaches will be given a building key at the beginning of the season. This key will unlock the Eastman gym door, the cafeteria door closest to the front of the building and the back door near the lower gym and 6th grade wing. DO NOT loan this key out to anyone. Please ensure that all doors are locked before leaving the building. Keys must be returned at the end of the season.

Locker Rooms Locker rooms may be used for changing purposes, team meetings, etc. However, no students are allowed in the locker rooms unless there is an adult present for supervision purposes. Please maintain a neat locker room and all belongings must be removed at the end of the season. Students are not allowed to enter the building before 7:40 am to drop off athletic bags in the locker rooms.

Equipment and Uniforms Coaches are responsible for signing out all equipment and uniforms. It is the coach’s responsibility to collect ALL uniforms and equipment at the end of the season. If there is a problem with an athlete returning his or her uniform, please notify the athletic director. No stipend will be paid out until all post season responsibilities have been fulfilled. Coaches should report any damaged equipment to the athletic director. Students are responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged uniforms and equipment. We recommend that students turn in all equipment on the last day of a game or event. The athletic dept. will launder the uniforms and put into storage. A medical kit will be issued to each team at the beginning of the season. It is the coach’s responsibility to notify the athletic director or school nurse if it needs replenishment during the season. Cleats are not allowed to be worn in the building.

Bus Transportation Busses for all away events will be scheduled by the athletic director. Students need to follow all the rules of the bus company while being transported by them. It is school policy for all athletes to ride the bus to and home from away games. However, from time to time students will ask to go home with their parents. This can only be done in unusual circumstances and with a note from the parent the morning of the event. The note needs to be brought to the front office in the morning and approved by the main office. Once approved by the main office, the student is responsible for delivering it to the coach. At no time is it permitted for -8-

a parent to take another student home without a note from the parent of the other student. The coach is responsible for that student’s safety. Coaches must not transport students in their personal vehicles. If something were to happen, the coach would be held responsible.

End of Season Celebrations This is up to each coach. Any costs incurred will be out of pocket. Coaches may give out awards. If a coach needs our facility to hold a celebration, please make sure the office is notified to reserve space.

J JLCA Physical Examination of Students R (Recommended) 1 of 2

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF STUDENTS Each child must have a complete physical examination within one year preceding first entry to school. The Board recommends that physical exams also be completed before entry into middle school. No medical examination shall be required of a child whose parent or guardian objects thereto in writing on the grounds such medical examination is contrary to his/her religious tenets and teachings. Parents of students transferring to the District must present proof of meeting the physical examination requirement prior to or upon first entry into the District’s schools. Prior to participation on a school athletic team, students must provide written documentation that they have passed a physical. Such exam must be completed at least once every school year. This requirement does not apply to students participating in intramural athletics. The school may schedule physical exams; any student who misses the scheduled physicals must present evidence of a physical exam from his/her own licensed health care provider. No child shall be excused from regular physical education except on the written notice of a duly licensed health care provider or on the written request of the parents, subject to the Superintendent’s approval, in which case an alternative program shall be provided. The physical education teacher, school nurse, or principal, upon the request of the parents, may grant temporary excuses on a day-to-day basis. Parent Notification – Certain Circumstances Pursuant to No Child Left Behind and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment, if the District utilizes federal money to perform physical exams or screenings on students, the District will notify parent(s) of such physical exam or screening and will allow the parents to “opt out” their child of any non-emergency, invasive physical exam or screening required as a condition of attendance, administered by the school or its agent and scheduled by the school and not necessary to protect the immediate health and safety of a student or of another student, except for hearing, vision or scoliosis screenings, or any physical exam or screening permitted or required under state law.

J JLCJ Concussions and Head Injuries Recommended 1 of 3

CONCUSSIONS AND HEAD INJURIES The School Board recognizes that concussions and head injuries are commonly reported injuries in children and adolescents who participate in sports and other recreational activities. The Board acknowledges the risk of catastrophic injuries or death is significant when a concussion or head injury is not properly evaluated and managed. The Board recognizes that the majority of concussions will occur in “contact” or “collisions” sports. However, in order to ensure the safety of all District student-athletes, this policy will apply to all competitive athletic activities as identified by the administration. Consistent with the National Federation of High School (NFHS) and the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC), the District will utilize recommended guidelines, procedures and other pertinent information to inform and educate coaches, youth athletes, and parents/guardians of the nature and risk of concussions or head injuries, including the dangers associated with continuing to play after a concussion or head injury. Prior to each athletic season, the coaches will distribute a head injury and concussion information sheet to all parents/guardians of student-athletes in competitive sport activities prior to the student-athlete's initial practice or competition. All coaches, including volunteers, will complete training as recommended and/or provided by NHIAA, New Hampshire Department of Education and/or other pertinent organizations. Additionally, all coaches of competitive sport activities will comply with NHIAA, CDC and NFHS recommended procedures for the management of head injuries and concussions. Athletic Director or Administrator in Charge of Athletic Duties Updating: Each fall, the athletic director or designee shall review any changes that have been made in procedures required for concussion and head injury management or other serious injury by consulting with the NHIAA or the District’s on-call physician, if applicable. If there are any updated procedures, they will be adopted and used for the upcoming school year. Identified Sports: Identified sports include all NHIAA-sanctioned activities, including cheer/dance squads, and any other district-sponsored sports or activities as determined by the administration.

J JLCJ Concussions and Head Injuries Recommended 3 of 3

CONCUSSIONS AND HEAD INJURIES (continued) Concussion Awareness and Education To the extent possible, the Board encourages the administration to implement concussion awareness and education into the district’s physical education and/or health education curriculum. The administrative decision will take into account all relevant considerations, including time, resources, access to materials, and other pertinent factors. Academic Issues in Students With Concussions In the event a student is concussed, regardless of whether the concussion was a result of a school-related or non-school-related activity, school district staff should be mindful that the concussion may affect the student’s ability to learn. In the event a student has a concussion, that student’s teachers will be notified. Teachers should report to the school nurse if the student appears to have any difficulty with academic tasks that the teacher believes may be related to the concussion. The school nurse will notify the student’s parents. Administrators and district staff will work to establish a protocol and course of action to ensure the student is able to maintain his/her academic responsibilities while recovering from the concussion. Section 504 accommodations or an individual health care plan may be developed in accordance with applicable law and board policies.
