Welcome to the 14th Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight for Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). Welcome back those of you who have travelled with us before and a special welcome to those of you who are joining us for the first time. I know you are going to have a fabulous day while at the same time being part of a major fundraising event. The Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight was initiated by Captain Roger Gee who is now on the RIDBC Board of Directors, with the first flight going to Longreach in 2002. We have subsequently flown to Norfolk Island, Uluru, Hamilton Island, Hobart, Sunshine Coast, Alice Springs, Queenstown, Adelaide and McLaren Vale, Fraser Island, Daylesford and Ballarat. We are pleased to be returning to beautiful Hamilton Island. I would like to acknowledge the very generous and significant contribution of our major sponsors, especially Qantas Airways Limited - this event would literally not get off the ground without their continued support with Alan Joyce a very proud Qantas Pathfinders Patron. I would also like to particularly acknowledge Shell Aviation, Sydney Airport Corporation Limited, AirServices Australia and Q Catering who have been long time sponsors. This year we would like to welcome aboard Lisa McGuigan who will be supplying the wines at lunch. These flights have raised $1,089.000 contributing significantly to over $7 million raised by Qantas Pathfinders for RIDBC since 1967 – a remarkable achievement by this dynamic and dedicated group of voluntary Qantas staff, past and present and outstanding ambassadors for both Qantas and RIDBC. A special mention must go to the fantastic crew, both Tech and Cabin who volunteer their services and just help make this day even more special. On behalf of the committee, THANK YOU for being part of this outstanding and unique fundraiser for RIDBC. Have a great flight! Kaye Bailey – RIDBC Pathfinders Coordinator

“It’s incredible to be a parent of a child with additional needs and feel no apprehension about your son starting ‘big school’ because of the support you are receiving,” Julie - Liam’s mum

JULIE & CRAIG

PARENTS TO LIAM WHO HAS VISION AND HEARING LOSS, JOIN CHARITY FLIGHT At just six week of age Liam was diagnosed with Norrie disease, a condition that causes blindness and in some cases, hearing loss . When Liam was two and a half years old his parents, Julie and Craig, turned to RIDBC for support. “Liam is blind and has mild hearing loss in both ears,” said Julie. “He had been having issues with his speech so we turned to RIDBC as they provided the speech therapy that we hadn’t been able to access through other vision loss providers. It was then that we discovered the intensity of services available through RIDBC. “Liam was enrolled in RIDBC Early Learning Program (Vision Impairment) and it was the best thing we could have done. He also joined RIDBC VisionEd Preschool, a specialist preschool for children with vision loss. I cannot put into words how much he changed – his interaction with the world around him and his motivation to learn just accelerated.”

Now Liam is five years old and is attending ‘big school’ at RIDBC Alice Betteridge School, which caters for children with significant vision or hearing loss, as well as a level of intellectual impairment. “Liam has already told me he is going to be school captain by the end of the year,” said Julie. “When he started with RIDBC he couldn’t talk at all, now he comes home at the end of the day he doesn’t stop talking about school until he goes to bed – it’s amazing! “Without RIDBC I would be lost in teaching Liam. RIDBC gives me the guidance to support him in the best way. We are using technology to ensure he is able to access the curriculum and develop his reading and writing skills using braille. Using specialist technology like an electronic braille machine, or even everyday technology like an iPad, RIDBC is working with Liam to make sure he has the skills he needs to succeed.”

Founded in regional Queensland in 1920 – as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services – Qantas is one of Australia’s most iconic brands and has been central to the development of the Australian and international aviation industry. By the 1930s Qantas was flying internationally, in partnership with Britain’s Imperial Airways. During the Second World War, Qantas operated the epic ‘Double Sunrise’ flights between Perth and Sri Lanka with Catalina flying boats. And in the post-war era, Qantas was instrumental in developing long-haul routes between Australia, Europe and the United States. Over the decades Qantas has been responsible for many aviation industry firsts, including becoming the first airline to fly around the world services via both hemispheres, operating the first jet services between Australia and North America, and creating the first business class cabin. Today the Qantas Group is a diverse global aviation business, comprising Qantas Domestic, Qantas International, the Jetstar low-cost carrier group and Qantas Loyalty.

Sydney Airport is proud to support the Qantas Pathfinders Charity Flight on Saturday, 12 September to raise much need funds for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC). We wish all passengers, crew and staff a safe and exciting day trip to Hamilton Island.

Sydney Airport is a proud supporter of our community, contributing nearly $1.5 million to charities, events, schools, sporting clubs and community organisations in 2014.

Shell Aviation is proud to continue its sponsorship of the Qantas Pathfinder Charity Flight by donating fuel for the flight as it has done for many years.

record breaking 20 hour non-stop flight from London to Australia in 1989.

The Qantas Group operates more than 7,300 flights each week, carries 50 million passengers a year and, together with its codeshare and oneworld partners, offers flights to more than 1000 destinations around the world. Its fleet numbers almost 300 aircraft, including the acclaimed Qantas A380 and the Jetstar Boeing 787 Dreamliner. As Australia’s national carrier, Qantas continues to be one of the world’s most trusted and respected premium airlines. It is ranked the world’s safest airline by AirlineRatings.com, one of the top 10 airlines in the world by Skytrax, and holds many major awards for service, food and wine, technology and innovation. The Qantas Group believes in playing a responsible and progressive role in the community through partnerships with organisations that champion positive change. As part of that commitment Qantas is proud to support its volunteer employees and the Pathfinders charity. Today Qantas is donating the cost of supplying the aircraft, catering and coordinating the flight.

Our relationship with Qantas began in the early 20’s soon after its establishment as an airline. In fact, Shell has been supplying Fuel to the Aviation industry globally for more than a hundred years, providing fuel for many Aviation first’s: Frenchman Louis Blériot’s spectacular crossing of the English Channel in 1909, Australia’s Bert Hinkler’s record breaking first solo flight from Croydon, England to Darwin, Australia in 1928, British Aviator, Amy Johnson’s , the first female pilot to fly Solo from England to Australia. We also supplied fuel for the Qantas Boeing 747 that made its

Today, we supply aviation fuel at around 800 airports in approximately 40 countries, refuelling about 7,000 aircraft which equates to one plane every 12 seconds. We continue to have one of the world’s most extensive fuelling networks with a strong focus on Customer Service. A focus which saw Shell Aviation voted as the ‘World’s Best International Jet Fuel Marketer and Supplier’ in the 2013/2014 Armbrust Awards. This is testament to our long standing commitment to deliver safe and efficient services to our customers while leveraging our technology leadership to support them in what is today a competitive and dynamic market.
