Alumni World Map 2007 – 2014 Allen Lin '07, USA, H&H Glass Inc., California:

“While MBA programs focus on business concepts, the Bucerius Program provided me with a solid grounding in legal concepts as well. This was especially useful to me as an entrepreneur, since I can now apply what I learned in the Program to my own company.”

Felix Körner '13, Germany, Regional Marketing Analyst Europe, Hamburg:

“FRIENDSHIP, exciting, extraordinary, personal growth, global network, powerful group, fun...these keywords best describe my experience in this wonderful master program. From the beginning, I was part of a diversified and international group with different backgrounds and a multitude of experiences. Furthermore, I acquired significant knowledge in law and business which helped me to understand the connection between the two fields and see the bigger picture of today’s business environment. This is really useful to me as I benefit from it in my daily work.”

Hamburg

Natasha Mina '13, Colombia, Monoqi, Berlin:

“Coming from a legal background, my knowledge about business topics before the Program was rather narrow. The business courses offered by the program not only improved my business proficiency but also increased my interest in the field and completely made me revise my professional aspirations. I now work for a start-up company in the heart of Berlin. This opportunity proved to me that my mixed background of law and business is very far from being an obstacle to my professional development but that my profile is very appealing to many international companies who highly value this kind of interdisciplinary background.”

Maria Pia Cravero '09, Argentina, World Bank, Buenos Aires:

“The Program has an excellent combination of law and business courses that have incredibly broadened my career horizon by providing me with advanced, specialized legal and business training. Now, as a lawyer, I understand a transaction beyond its legal aspects and that is what many employers are looking for in a world that is getting more complex every day.”

Darren Saksenberg '13, South Africa, EMC Group, Johannesburg:

“Participating in the Bucerius Program has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. Although I have a business background, I did my internship at an international law firm in Germany, which bears testimony to the versatile nature of the program. Shortly after graduating, I received outstanding employment offers both in Germany and internationally and since returning to the corporate world, I have been able to put the knowledge I gained from the program immediately to work which has distinguished me from my work colleagues. The Program is one year that will truly last you a lifetime.”

Georgiana Ianus '08, Romania, European Commission, Brussels:

“One of the greatest achievements of the Program is bringing lawyers and businesspeople in one room. It is the only way to understand why lawyers think it is so important to read the footnotes and look at every little detail and how businesspeople can see the big picture and understand the deal as a whole.”

Anna Konchenkova '10, Russia, Customer Service Executive Russia, bookings.com, Berlin:

“The Master of Law and Business at Bucerius Law School opened up a new perspective in my life. As a student with a legal background I had the chance to obtain knowledge in economics to the level necessary to start my career in a business company. Students benefit tremendously not only from the curriculum itself but also from the international spirit of the program. I wish I could do this program one more time. It was amazing!”

Heng Li '09, China, Investment Manager, DT Capital, Beijing:

“The Program has taught me the necessary legal knowledge and legal thinking to understand a commercial issue also from the legal perspective. Thus, I can make a more comprehensive analysis when making my own commercial judgment. In addition, the most interesting part of the Program is being in a class with students from different disciplines and industry backgrounds, sharing and exchanging ideas and experiences. The exciting interactive classes made the studying a lot of fun.”

Sidney Boois '14, Namibia MVA Fund Namibia, Windhoek:

“I have had a very fulfilling experience in the Program. It has been a meeting of minds, of getting to know warm and intelligent people all in the setting of a global village. The Program provided an opportunity to stretch my own thinking abilities and mindset which enabled me to see the increasing need of the proper integration of the parts and components necessary to realize the ideal products and services, be it in your business or personal life”.

Suhyun Shon '12, South Korea, Maersk Line, Rotterdam:

“The Program at Bucerius Law School not only opened up a new opportunity of career options, but also enabled me to develop analytical and critical thinking skills.”

The Bucerius Master of Law and Business (LLM/MLB) Interdisciplinary · Practice-Oriented · International The Master of Law and Business (LLM/MLB) is the ideal program for law and business graduates who wish to obtain a professional advantage in today’s highly-competitive business and legal environments. Depending on the focus of their studies, graduates are awarded either

Dean Clifford Larsen: “The Bucerius program offers two degrees. The Master of Law and Business (“MLB”) emphasizes the law-business combination and thus is a cutting-edge degree for both businesspeople and lawyers. To receive the LLM (Law and Business) degree, a student must have a first law degree and focus during the Program somewhat more on legal issues. Whatever degree students seek, they study in the Program together, thereby enriching both classroom discussion and the knowledge transfer that occurs among the students themselves.”

a Master of Laws (LLM) or a Master of Law and Business (MLB). The Program is run by the Bucerius Law School, Germany’s top-ranked law school. In today’s global economy, lawyers and businesspeople alike are regularly confronted with international issues that involve both legal and business aspects. The Program’s one-year curriculum, taught entirely in English, is designed exclusively for lawyers, businesspeople and graduates of other disciplines who strive to be at the forefront of these legal and business developments.

6

Why one program with two different degree possibilities?

The curriculum takes the life-cycle of a business enterprise and pursues both the legal and business aspects of that development. Students analyze the realization of an entrepreneurial idea, investigate the founding of a business enterprise, and evaluate the international growth and development of that enterprise. Elective modules allow students to deepen their knowledge in additional areas of law and business. A mandatory internship and writing of a master’s thesis add practice-oriented and research components to the Program. As a result of this curriculum, LLM/MLB graduates boast an impressive set of skills and knowledge with direct relevance for work in international companies, law firms, and other organizations. They belong to that group of cutting-edge professionals who have been systematically trained to take an interdisciplinary approach to legal and management questions. The student body, consisting of well-trained professionals from around the world, fosters an intercultural understanding of legal and business questions and helps prepare students for their international careers. The LLM/MLB Program takes place in Hamburg, Germany, a major hub of international commerce and a beautiful city. In light of Germany’s strong economy, many alumni choose to stay in Germany for some time after the Program.

Key benefits • Offered by Bucerius Law School, Germany’s top-ranked law school • Interdisciplinary 1-year program taught entirely in English • For law and business graduates with some work experience • G raduates receive either an LLM (Law and Business) or a Master of Law and Business (MLB) • Strong career services and internship support • International student body and faculty from academia and practice • Excellent administrative support • Focus on employment-relevant knowledge and skills • Scholarships available

Ammad Ahmad '10, Pakistan, Co-Founder, Atheneum Partners, Berlin:

“After being in the US for about 12 years, I made the choice to leap over to the other side of the Atlantic, and settle in Hamburg, Germany. The Program provided me with access to a variety of knowledge and people that helped me develop and pave the path to where I am today. The Program and its network helped me find the right mix of people to start my own firm, Atheneum Partners in 2010. Today, Atheneum has some 110 employees located across the globe in offices in Shanghai, Berlin, Zurich and Santiago, and I’m glad to have made the choice to leaping over to this side of the Atlantic for the Program.”

7

A Unique Approach The LLM/MLB curriculum is unique in its structure. Throughout the entire academic year, all modules relate to one overarching theme: the founding and development of a business enterprise, from both the business and the legal perspective. Thus, the curriculum follows the enterprise through various phases, including the founding of the enterprise, transforming the firm into a publicly-held enterprise, going international, merging with or acquiring another firm, and restructuring a firm that has financial difficulties. By using the development of an enterprise as its structural backbone, the Program creates synergies among its various modules. As a result, the students study more efficiently and obtain a better overall understanding of the interrelationship of law and business. The Program links law and business within its individual modules. For example, the module examining the founding of an enterprise considers both entrepreneurship as well as the question of what legal form to use for the enterprise and how to finance the start-up company. The students analyze these topics not from the perspective of any one national system, but from a comparative perspective. This approach allows students to analyze various national approaches to the issues that arise in every business and legal culture. The curriculum also addresses ethical issues from different perspectives. Academically, all students take an ethics module that combines business and legal perspectives. Furthermore, all students participate in a social project, in which they “give back” to the community (see p. 11). Finally, LLM/MLB students become part of a rich, close-knit international community. Coming from an average of 30 countries every academic year (from some 80 countries in the history of the Program), students learn to recognize the cultural element of both formal law and business issues and of working with their colleagues from around the world.

8

Carolina Arroyo '12, Ecuador, Andrade Veloz Abogados, Quito:

“The course structure of the Program is designed in a way that fosters the creation of a complete outlook for the professional world irrespective of the students’ previous backgrounds. It promotes complementary skills, since the business and legal courses offered in each module set the basis for the upcoming one, and it is remarkable how classes connect to each other as if they were pieces of a puzzle. The students have the opportunity to build a complete scenario considering both: the legal and business perspectives. These perfectly fit each other, not only from a company life cycle view, but also from the legal analysis required for businesses and legal practice. ”

Additional Program details Orientation Program The LLM/MLB Program offers a two-week orientation program for all students at the end of August. Participation is recommended, as the Orientation Program’s preparatory courses in law and business ensure a smooth transition into the demanding curriculum. In addition, new students meet alumni, are officially welcomed by Bucerius Law School in the joint Graduation and Welcome Ceremony, and receive important advice regarding administrative matters such as residence permits, bank accounts and health insurance.

Studium Generale The Studium Generale is a mandatory part of the Master of Law and Business Program. By integrating the great diversity in cultural and legal backgrounds of the students into the Studium Generale sessions, the Program allows students to become more aware of various points of view on matters of broad interest, thereby helping to foster a better understanding of their backgrounds, opinions and perspectives. To this end, the Studium Generale takes a variety of different forms, for example: country presentations given by the students about their home countries, lectures, discussions, debates, and excursions.

Social Project Participation in a social project is a required part of the Studium Generale. All students must contribute at least 30 hours to a social project, be it an existing project or one that they organize themselves. The incorporation of a social project into the curriculum reflects the Program’s conviction that future leaders must not only have an excellent academic background; they must also be ready to shoulder responsibility in the societies in which they live, especially with regard to those people less fortunate than themselves. Over the past several years, the students have worked in a wide variety of projects, for example: for children with cancer, for the homeless, for young adults with little connection to higher education, for the environment, and others. Through the giving of their time and their talents, the students produce results of which they can be proud and set an example for others.

Graf von Westphalen Brussels Study Trip During this voluntary trip, students gain insights into the policy and decision-making processes in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. During this trip, students generally: • Visit the European Parliament and a Plenary Session, • M eet officials from the European Commission and of the European Parliament, and • M eet representatives of various organizations, such as law firms and public affairs entities. The students also have the opportunity to experience some cultural and architectural highlights of Brussels and to savour Belgian cuisine – Belgian chocolate is famous and a dinner with “moules et frites” is a traditional part of the trip. The trip is generously sponsored by the law firm Graf von Westphalen.

Internship Students must complete an 8-week internship in a law firm, corporation or other organization. Details about the internship and career advising can be found on page 13 of this brochure.

Master’s Thesis All students are required to write a master’s thesis, which serves as the main research component of the program. The students develop their own topic, which must be approved by the dean. As preparation for writing their theses, students participate in a mandatory thesis preparatory course, which addresses the specific thesis requirements and gives useful hints regarding the selection of a topic and the development of a structure and hypothesis.

12

Internship and Career Services All students of the LLM/MLB Program must complete an 8-week internship in a law firm, corporation or organization. This internship provides LLM/MLB students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in the first six months of the Program to international business and legal practice. As it takes place before the writing of the master’s thesis, the internship also provides students with an excellent opportunity to find thesis topics that are of interest to both themselves and to potential employers. The internship may take place in Germany or abroad. Whilst the responsibility of finding an internship lies with the individual student, the LLM/MLB career service is there to provide continuous support to the students in their search for a placement. Specifically, the Career Advisor: • Meets individually with students to give career guidance, • Assists students with the application process, • Creates a CV book for potential employers, • Coordinates speculative applications, • Organizes career events and company presentations, • Organizes the unique opportunity to have “mock” interview training with a professional headhunter, • Generally provides the students with the best tools possible in order to secure

After the Program, graduates continue their careers in a wide variety of ways, both within Germany and beyond. Many work for business enterprises, from start-ups through major international corporations in fields including finance, marketing and manufacturing. Others join law firms, accounting firms, or management consulting firms. Still others serve in international organizations or pursue further academic studies. “Whether you are looking to be employed in a multinational company, humanitarian organization or planning to open your own business, the Program offers endless possibilities. It gave me the confidence to start my own business, something I had only dreamt about in the past. Having a law background, I found the business courses particularly challenging. Now that I have acquired the skills and knowledge necessary, I am able to set out into the entrepreneurial world with a dynamic character.”

Jessica Chen '13, China, Continental AG, Hannover:

“As a student in the Program, I had the wonderful opportunity to study, work and hang out with classmates from 28 countries from all over the world. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary course was a great opportunity for me with a business background and my lawyer classmates to get to know each other’s areas of expertise and learn from each other. My experience in the finance area was supplemented by the Program so that I now have the opportunity to work in corporate auditing. The knowledge from both law and business from this program is crucial for this job. I am very happy that I received this job opportunity in Germany after the Program.”

Now it is clear that my further academic development (also as a Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher at Columbia University) and career would not have been possible without the MLB degree. Student Services The LLM/MLB Program has a staff of five professionals, dedicated to providing the best administrative support possible. The LLM/MLB Team works exclusively for the Program and assists students with services such as housing, health insurance, banking and visa applications. Students also receive an information package with important information prior to their arrival in Hamburg.

Housing The Program reserves a number of rooms in a modern, well-equipped and centrally-located student residence hall, as well as in a beautiful villa in the exclusive neighborhood of Blankenese. Additionally, the Team assists students in finding suitable accommodation on the free housing market, including subletting rooms from or sharing apartments with Germans. Most students live within a 10 to 30 minute commute of Bucerius Law School. Rent varies from € 250 to € 700 per month, depending on housing size and location.

Visa Generally, all non-German citizens require a visa for a stay of more than three months. Exemptions apply to EU and EEA (European Economic Area) citizens and Swiss nationals. Students who are NOT a citizen of the above-mentioned states must contact their local German Consulate or Embassy several months before the start of the Program in order to determine which visa they require for the 12 months’ study program in Hamburg. The LLM/MLB Team provides administrative support and information in many cases.

Health Insurance Students must provide proof that they have health insurance that covers them in Germany. They can purchase a traveler’s insurance in their home country or ask whether their home country’s health insurance covers them while abroad. The LLM/MLB Team can assist in getting coverage under an affordable German public or private insurance policy that fulfills the German requirements for the residence permit.

Edgar Kachere '13, Malawi, Assistant Clerk of the Malawi Parliament (Legal Services), Lilongwe:

“When I came to Bucerius Law School for the Program in 2012, I expected that just after registration, I would be left to fend for myself, especially on accommodation, health, transportation, reading material, and any other form of social needs. Finishing the Program, a year later, it is only fair to say that the Program Team is a special kind of team. Not only does it assist students in choosing among the wide variety of Program courses, it also helps even on social adjustment and integration. Every time I had a problem, be it on medical, discounted transportation, language difficulties, international travel arrangements, course material or course choices, a member of Program staff was always readily available and more than willing to assist, and made sure that I was ably assisted to the end, even if they had no obligation to do so!! Truth be told, in my view, no other postgraduate institution beats the Program Team on this. I trust that the Team will continue to do this for all the students coming after us.”

Students are also given the opportunity to take on-campus German courses tailor-made for their needs or other languages classes offered by the Bucerius Law School Language Center.

Björn-Michael Piesch '12, Germany, Volkswagen Group, Wolfsburg:

“The Program is more than just a challenging year of study in an international environment. Hamburg is a dynamic metropolis that offers best conditions for outdoor water sports, like sailing and rowing. Bucerius Law School has various rowing groups that practice on the Alster Lake, and sends a team to the famous “Head of the River Race” in London every year.”

18

Alumni Network Bucerius Law School has a growing body of international alumni from around the globe. 100 international students participate in the Bucerius Exchange Program every fall trimester and the Master program itself has some 360 alumni from 80 countries around the world. LLM and MLB graduates are encouraged to become members of the Bucerius Alumni Association so that they can remain connected to the school, their classmates across class years and the graduates of the Bucerius LLB Program. The Alumni Association regularly organizes events to support the alumni in further developing their professional, social and cultural skills and organizes an alumni dinner every November. A specially designed on-line Alumni Directory allows graduates to connect with alumni with similar professional or personal/social interests. The LLM/MLB Program itself organizes a formal alumni reunion in Hamburg every two years with activities around the city and a festive dinner. At the last reunion alumni from some 28 countries were in attendance. Graduates of the Program are of course also welcome to participate in the yearly international student reunions organized by the Bucerius Clifford Chance International Office. In the past, these international student reunions have taken place in Hamburg, Paris and New York. Graduates are also encouraged to stay in touch via the Facebook alumni and class groups and to regularly update the LLM/MLB Team of their personal and professional progress.

Bucerius Law School Bucerius Law School is Germany’s leading private and state-accredited law school; it has been referred to as a German “Ivy League” institution (Christoph Luschin in: Southwestern Journal of International Law 2012). Its graduates are among the most sought-after in Germany and abroad. Bucerius Law School has achieved this result because it is characterized by its international focus, practical and performance orientation, and attention to the personal development of each individual student. Bucerius Law School was founded in 2000 by the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, one of Germany’s largest private foundations, in order to stimulate new developments in higher education. Bucerius Law School is an intimate campus institution with some 20 full-time professors, dozens of guest lecturers, 500 LLB students, 100 exchange students, 50 LLM/MLB students and almost 300 Ph.D. students. Institutes and centers for Transnational IP, Media and Technology Law and Policy, Corporate Law and Capital Markets Law, and Foundation Law and the Law of Non-Profit Organizations all emphasize the strong link between business and law, the link that is at the heart of the Bucerius MLB and LLM degrees. The conditions for students seeking the MLB or LLM degree at Bucerius Law School are excellent. The school is located on a leafy campus in the center of Hamburg. All Bucerius buildings, completely renovated or newly-built, are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing students to follow their individual study habits. Small-group study rooms facilitate students’ working together outside of class; a cafeteria, coffee lounge, a napping room and small fitness center encourage students to relax and socialize. Because of its location and the quality of its facilities, Bucerius Law School is the site of a wide range of conferences, external lectures, and other international events. The program’s lecturers – both full-time academics and members of the practicing legal and business communities – are approachable, willing to share their experience with students and offer advice whenever needed. As graduates often emphasize, LLM/MLB staff are dedicated to providing strong administrative and personal support to the students.

Faculty statements One of the strengths of the LLM/MLB Program is the diverse faculty that includes academicians, as well as professors from the practising legal and business communities from both Germany and abroad.

Andreas E. Meier, Regional Head, UBS Wealth Management for Northern Germany and Latin America: “A master program with participants from all accross the globe with different educational and cultural backgrounds is a true experience for both students and ourselves, the lecturers. Our objective to build a bridge between theory and practice provides for vivid real-life discussions in the class, making the content more tangible and comprehensive. In an ever more challenging and complex business environment, this is imperative to prepare our students for their professional careers.”

Michael Friedman, JD, Legal Editor at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law: “Unlike many other LLM programs offered at law schools around the world, the Bucerius program is made up of courses specially designed with the program objectives in mind. We’ve all heard the unpleasant stories of LLM candidates simply being added into large lecture courses without any particular focus on their unique needs. That doesn’t happen here, and it’s one of the reasons I think the program offers its candidates something special. Getting to know the new students in the program is always

Dr. Carsten Jungmann, LL.M. (Yale), M.Sc. in Finance (Leicester), Partner, DUVINAGE Lawyers, Munich: “Teaching in the LLM/MLB program since its founding year in 2006, I have had the great opportunity to witness, year by year, young high potentials gaining a skill that will be helpful for the rest of their lives: understanding each other. “The interdisciplinary approach of the Program helped me, as a lawyer, to begin considering the law as a tool for achieving business purposes. A scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation enabled me to finish the Program as well as to pass my Ph.D. qualifying examination at Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel. Students from the EURO zone can consider applying for the Brain Capital Tuition financing concept. Participants in this concept do not pay tuition during their studies, but commit to making income-dependent payments after graduation, once a specific income-level has been reached (www.braincapital.de). Financial assistance cannot be provided for all deserving applicants. We highly recommend that students start early with their search for other means of financing the Program tuition and living expenses. As financial assistance and loan providers often set very early application deadlines, students must contact institutions in their home countries and abroad far in advance. The program website contains additional information on both scholarships exclusively for students as well as links to websites of other scholarship-granting organizations, such as the DAAD.
