Have a great summer!

Sixth Sunday of Easter The housing market is often used as a leading indicator of economic recovery because so much money is invested in this segment of the economy. Construction of new homes provides jobs, and the purchase of existing homes leads to additional consumer spending as homeowners move in, repair, and renovate. Analysts use a baseline that they consider a "normal" market, and then measure improvement from there. In the dark days of the housing collapse five years ago new construction starts were less than one-third the desired level of 1.5 million a month. Just three years ago, mortgage delinquency and foreclosure rates were almost triple what is considered an acceptable rate of 5.25%. These are dark and dismal figures if you are a banker or construction worker. In the Gospel this weekend Jesus is speaking to his disciples at the Last Supper describing the relationship between himself and the Father and the Holy Spirit. Those who love Jesus will keep his word and he and the Father will come and make their dwelling with the disciple. This image of dwelling speaks to the abiding presence of God in the followers of Jesus. God is always with them. Owning a home was long considered a part of the American dream. If a family could purchase a place of their own, then they would consider themselves to have "made it." Home ownership is still a value many people cling to, but its luster has dimmed since the collapse of the housing market. We are six Sundays away from Easter now, and maybe the joy of that feast has also dimmed a bit in our hearts. Maybe we've slipped back into some of our usual patterns and lost some of the fervor of our baptismal commitment. Even the Christian life is occasionally subject to a certain buyer's remorse. Jesus tells us in the Gospel not to be troubled or afraid. He and the Father are with us in a dwelling that is forever.

The Pastor’s Page WHAT A BEAUTIFUL GIFT There are many times that I think about some of the gifts that I have received through the years and the meaning those gifts have had for me. I can remember my first gifts: toys! I could not get enough toys. Toys of every variety were demolished or lost almost as quickly as they came into our household. With a brother who was a year-and-a-half younger, we were always fighting over each other’s toys. We actually began to get duplicate toys from our parents at Christmas so that we would not try to take each others. You know where this is going, right? The moment a toy broke, it always was the other guy’s. Then, we moved into the clothes times. I began getting clothes, lots of clothes, through the year. The only thing I hated more than clothes were more clothes. It seemed to be a never-ending cycle. After the clothes era, we began to experience the money era. Instead of toys or clothes or other items, our gift became money. That way, we could use the money to purchase what we wanted. Funny how, no matter how much money we would receive, we never felt we had enough to buy exactly what we wanted. Giving gifts can be such a chore. Receiving gifts can be as well, especially if we are always looking for more. There is, however, a gift that is always the right size, the right shape, the right denomination, the right everything. That gift is the gift of God Himself. Jesus gave us a most wonderful gift on the night He was arrested. He gave us the gift of His very own Body and Blood. When we receive that gift, we take the Lord, Himself, into our bodies. We are nourished by that sacred food. We are brought into closer union with Him. The gift of the Eucharist — the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ — is such a powerful gift that it acts to cleanse us and unify us. How special that some of our parishioners have received this awesome gift for the very first time this weekend. On Saturday, May 4th at a 10:00 a.m. Mass, students from our parish school received their First Communion. In two weeks, on Saturday, May 18th, at a 10:00 a.m. Mass, students from our religious education program will receive their First Communion. Please pray for our students who receive the Eucharistic Lord for their first time this month that they appreciate this great and wonderful gift and come back to the altar of the Lord regularly throughout their lives!

THE MONTH OF MARY The month of May is also the Month of Mary. This is an opportunity for you to share your devotion for the Mother of Jesus Christ with your family. Take the time to pray together this month. Perhaps pray the rosary together. Tell your children of your appreciation for the Blessed Virgin Mary. May Mary, our Mother, intercede for us with her Son so that we may receive abundant grace and grow closer to God in faith, hope, and love! MUSIC MINISTRY CONCERT Saturday, May 18th, you are invited to join us at 7:00 p.m. in the church for an inspiring concert performed by the many musical groups of our parish. Groups to perform: Adult & Student Handbell Choirs All Seasons Chorale Schola Cantorum Student Choir Funeral Choir The members of all our different choirs work very hard to provide music for all sorts of occasions. Come, listen to them, and let them fill your hearts will joy. By doing so, you will also give them a great deal of joy knowing that you value what they do for our parish community. We hope to see you there! ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A police recruit was asked on an exam, “What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?” In the blank, he wrote, “Call for backup.”

Historic Arcola, Illinois June 6, 2013 from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. • $53 per person Join us for our trip to Arcola, Illinois, a historic city noted for its brick streets, unique shops and newly restored Illinois Central Railroad Train Depot. We will visit an Amish Community & Museum, dedicated to the Old Order Amish, and famous for their bakeries, furniture, house décor and many beautifully handcrafted items. The Museum holds memorabilia of the railroad, a collection of Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls (the creator of the dolls was born in Arcola), and many other historic items. A train ride will be available to appreciate the spectacular grounds. For an additional cost buggy rides will be available. We plan to have lunch in Rockome Restaurant which is managed by Yoder’s Kitchen; a treat for all. There will be time for everyone to explore the many gift shops. The Rockome Gardens theme park is famous for its beauty, filled with unusual and creative rock sculptures. At the Gardens, we will visit the cheese factory where there are bulk foods available, plus a bakery and candy shop. What a fantastic day this promises to be! Be sure and bring a tote bag to bring home all your goodies. The price of $53 includes transportation, lunch, entrance fee and all gratuities. A “comfort stop” on the way to Arcola is planned. Please join us and make your reservation in the STM parish office for another fascinating trip. Page 9

Coffee & Donuts The New Parishioner Welcome Ministry would like to once again offer Coffee & Donut Sundays occasionally during the year, but in order to do so we need more people to join us. In addition to the Coffee & Donut Sundays, this ministry also hosts a New Parishioner Welcome Luncheon twice a year. This is a great ministry for any parishioner/s who would like to meet other members of the parish and have a big impact with limited time commitment; perfect for families, couples or friends who would like to volunteer together. Our next meeting will be

Wednesday, May 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Teachers’ Lounge. Please join us!
