H o r s e s a n d Pe o p l e m e e t i n Ta i w a n H orses and people met in Taiw an June 22 through 25 at the XV Congress, the ęrst ever held in A sia, on the campus of A letheia University in Danshui, a suburb of Taipei. The program opened w ith an address by a special guest of the Congress, Laurentia Tan (Singapore) w ho w on two bronze medals at the 2008 Beijing Para Equestrian Games. Other keynote speakers w ere Dr. A ndrew M cLean (A ustralia) on “ Training Principles that A rise from Learning Theory” ; Dr. Gabriela Wagner (A ustria) on “ Loosening-up, Sw inging, Rotating: H ow to Rain the Physioball for BeĴ er Riding” ; Joseph Dreissen (N ew Zealand) on “ With Troubled Students, The Wise Instructor Lets the H orse Do the Work” ; and Julia BaĴ ams (A ustralia) on “ The Use of the Pressure Pad for Coaching and Research.” Workshop speakers follow ed w ith presentations by Drs. M cLean and Wagner and Roselein Wilkes (N ew Zealand). The second day of the Congress

featured a visit to stables outside Danshui w ith demonstrations by the speakers. The third and fourth day contained forums and scientięc and research Forums back at the University. A s bookends to the very varied and full program of events, a gala dinner w ith native music and dancing w as held on the ęrst night and an equally unforgeĴ able farew ell dinner (w ith infectious native dancing that the Congress participants w ere unable to resist) took place on the last night of the Congress, w ith aw ards of appreciation given and a festive draw ing of raĝ e prizes. The Congress w as thoroughly and superbly produced by the Organizing CommiĴ ee chaired by Uta RindĚeisch-Wu, the Department of Sports M anagement of A leitheia University, and the members of the tw o local Federation members, the Chinese Taipei Equestrian A ssociation and Qi Zhi Vocational Training Centre.

Fr o m t h e Pr esi d en t Dear M embers: I have the honour of w riting this leĴ er to our members. In Taiw an I w as elected to be the President for the coming three years. Thank you to my successors for leading the w ay before me and having formalized and essentially completed a H ETI mission statement. Collaboration, Shared Know ledge, Expertise and Visibility are the w ords that describe my aims in the upcoming three years. I´m certain that our new board members Jill Carey (Ireland, Treasurer), Irene Kapari (Greece), Werner Wecker (Germany), Rosw itha Zink

(A ustria), Jeong-Yi Kw on (South Korea) w ho w ere elected for the three year term in A pril 8, 2015 [and its continuing members Vera H orne (Vice-President, Brasil) and Lorenzo Lucarelli (Spain)] together w ill collaborate, share know ledge and expertise and help H ETI to be more visible. The responsibility for success lies on you, our members. Keep forw arding new s and information to this new sleĴ er so that everyone can be aw are of w hat is happening internationally. I also urge you to continue providing H ETI w ith results of research for consideration in the peer-review ed Scientięc and Educational Journal of Therapeutic Riding. Remember that our international calendar is there to list courses given in your country. A ll this helps us to be a stronger and more respected organization. Our board w ill be in

touch personally w ith our members. Each person on the Board w ill be taking on a particular task. I am happy of the outcome of the Congress in Taiw an. Thank you Uta RindĚeisch-Wu, for your enormous w ork and eě ort to create a scientięcally brilliant and w arm atmosphere w hich invited socializing and mingling. I enjoyed the morning Tai Chi sessions w ith the M aster, w hich kept my body Ěexible during the Congress sessions. H ET R I CS Gi v e s T w o Se m i n a r s The Therapeutic Riding Center of Serres (KETH IS) [also know n as H ETRICS— Ed.] is a nonproęt organization created in 2005. The center implements numerous therapeutic programs for people w ith disabilities. Therapeutic (or adaptive) riding is beneęcial for children and adults w ho suě er from physical and/or mental conditions We are happy to announce that tw o seminars have been successfully concluded. H ippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding w ere the programs that took place in our premises. The main concern of (KETH IS) is the dissemination of H ippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding based on H ETI principles. The ęrst seminar w as actually the sum of part-seminars in Training Therapeuutic riding. Specialised tutors, instructors of physical education, psychologists and riding instructors, aĴ ended this seminar w ith great interest and gained specialized know ledge to help people w ith autism, mental retardation and mental illnesses. We w ould like to thank the speakers of this Seminar w ho w on over the audience: M arieĴ a Schulz w ith her huge experience and M aria Liapi the highly trained and very w ell organized psychologist of TRA GR We are very proud for our ow n people w ho are highly trained and have a huge experience especially i n the ground of autism: Chrysa Karra and N iki Vogiaĵ i. Pomes, A lpen Star and Savvina our lovely horses, had the ęrst part role. The second seminar w as Level I Hippotherapy Treatment Principles Education Course from the A merican H ippotherapy A ssociation (A H A ). It lasted four days but it took several months of talks in order to reach all the criteria and cover all the prerequisites of H ETI.

A nn w as an inspiration and mentor to many as a founding member of Riding for the Disabled in Western A ustralia. She is survived by her tw o sons, Richard and David. It is a great honor for our Centre to be a part of this community and organize an international event like this w hich is globally accepted and certięed. A t the end w e had aĴ endants from all Greece and also from Dubai, M alta and the United Kingdom, a total of 20 aĴ endees. They varied from physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and doctors. The seminar speakers Pippa H odge Gina Taylor from USA and Canada, w ere highly trained, very

w ell organized and w ith absolute synchronization betw een them. They organized the seminar in a perfect w ay, and they gave all the necessary details in a very comfortable w ay. We have to state also that the therapist teams were magnięcent. We are looking forw ard to the Level II A H A seminar in our premises to conclude the basis of specilisation in H ippotherapy. —Stavrula Kiriakopoulou

Os l o Un i v e r s i t y H o s p i t a l H o r s e As s i s t e d T h e r a p y ( H AT ) R e s e a r c h Back ground H orse A ssisted Therapy (H A T) is a grow ing complementary health activity w ith liĴ le supporting empirical evidence for the often-claimed beneęts to physical and psychological health, including substance abuse related problems. In 2011, Oslo University H ospital (OUS) established a multidimensional project to explore the impact of H AT on treatment and outcomes of young substance users, and to contribute to the H A T evidence base. The project has quantitative and qualitative studies. It is part of the Youth A ddiction Treatment Evaluation Project (YA TEP). A t ISA M 2012 and the First N ordic Research Seminar on Equine A ssisted Therapy, w e reported results from a Preliminary Study of 126 cases using univariate analysis of H A T and treatment outcome. H AT participants had an almost 4 times beĴ er chance of successful treatment outcome than those w ho had not participated in the horse assisted therapy program (OR 3—6, CI 1—6–8—0, p=
