Biographical Note The Gulicks were a prominent East Central Illinois family with roots in the earliest years of American settlement. Clyde Denny Gulick (1876-1952), a successful physician, graduated in the University of Illinois's first medical college class in 1902, served in the United States Army and National Guard, and lived with his family in Urbana for more than fifty years. His wife, Grace Alward Gulick (1875-1958), participated in local society life and practiced creative writing. Their daughter, Louise Elizabeth Gulick (1906-2005), the donor of this collection, taught college-level science for more than twenty years in Hannibal, MO and subsequently at Monticello College in Godfrey, IL. Their son Jesse Richard Gulick (1910-1976) was a highway engineer who worked throughout Illinois and the Midwest and served in East Asia during the Second World War. Both the Gulicks and the Alwards can be traced in this country to the mid-1660s, making the Gulicks of Urbana part of a long American lineage with extensive family relations.
Scope and Content Note The Gulick Family Collection spans 120 years (1867-1987), with bulk dates 1897-1960. A large part of the collection comprises handwritten correspondence between immediate family members, extended family, and friends. The collection also includes a number of genealogies and a family tree; legal documents and deeds related to family ownership of a Canton farm; some date and address books; yearbooks and grade reports for the University of Illinois, Monticello College, and local public schools; and a few artifacts such as fraternal society pins and U.S. Army tags. The collection is notable for its documentation of a well-off and reputable family in East Central Illinois. The correspondence, especially, reveals the relationships between these individuals. As the bulk of the correspondence is between Louise Elizabeth Gulick, her mother and her aunts, it also reveals the lives of women at various times through the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Letters from Clyde and

Jesse Gulick, moreover, offer glimpses into family life during wartime. Substantial genealogical materials and correspondence provide a bigger picture of the Gulick and Alward families and their history in the United States. Additional information about the Gulicks and research conducted on them can be found in the family file onsite at the Champaign County Historical Archives. A collection of photographs showing family members has been transferred to the photo collection there.

Series Description Series 1 This series contains general information about the Gulick family and its long history in the United States. The bulk of the series comprises genealogical materials compiled over almost a century by generations of family members. These include extensive notes and correspondence dating to the late 1890s, as well as a number of genealogical manuscripts that trace the history of the Gulick family from the Netherlands to Champaign County. Also included in series 1 are materials related to an inquiry, on behalf of Louise Elizabeth Gulick and Jesse Richard Gulick in 1964, into the possibility of an inheritance from their grandmother Lillian T. Gulick. The resulting memorandum includes the last wills and testaments of Joseph T. Everett, Jesse R. Gulick (the senior), Joseph P. Gulick, and Lillian L. Gulick. Series 2 This series contains the papers of Louise Elizabeth Gulick (1906-2005), donor of the Gulick Family Collection. Elizabeth was born March 12, 1906 to Clyde Denny Gulick and Grace Alward Gulick. She attended Urbana High School and the University of Illinois, where she graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts in 1927 and subsequently an M.A. in Zoology in 1928. Elizabeth went on to teach biological and life sciences for several years, first at LaGrange College in Hannibal, MO from 1930 to 1935, then at Monticello College in Godfrey, IL. In 1953, Elizabeth resigned from teaching at Monticello in order to look after her ailing mother. While there is not much information about Elizabeth in the 1960s and 1970s, it appears that in the 1980s she maintained a winter house in Florida. Her several spiritual writings and correspondence at this time also suggest that she became more religious later in life. Subseries 2.1 and 2.2 comprise materials related to Elizabeth's early personal life and professional career. These include items Elizabeth collected while studying and working at the University of Illinois (report cards, dance cards, newsletters, etc.), LaGrange College, and Monticello College—including six copies of the Echo, the Monticello yearbook, from 1937 to 1952. Folder 2 in Box 3 ((Unique Box ID 867) also includes a history of Monticello College, presumably prepared for Founder's Day celebrations in 1953. Subseries 2.3 contains incoming correspondence from family members. The vast majority of records in this subseries comprise the letters of Grace Alward Gulick, Elizabeth's mother. These letters provide an almost daily account of life in 1930s and 1940s Urbana, from the perspective of a woman of social rank. The Second World War is also a recurring theme in this body of correspondence, especially in the letters of Elizabeth's brother Jesse Richard Gulick, who served abroad. Subseries 2.4 contains incoming correspondence from friends and associates. Letters with known authors are arranged alphabetically by author, starting with those with sufficient number to comprise their own folders. Letters with unknown authors are in a single folder and are arranged by date. Most of the correspondence is personal, and the bulk falls roughly into two key time periods: 1940-1960 (including correspondence from friends involved in World War II, as well as sympathy cards following the death of Clyde Gulick in 1953) and the 1980s. Subseries 2.5 contains outgoing correspondence, mainly drafts of letters Elizabeth wrote regarding both personal and professional matters.

Series 3 This series contains papers and correspondence related to the personal and professional career of Clyde Denny Gulick (1876-1952). Clyde was a prominent physician and community member in Urbana for many years. He was born November 27, 1876 on a farm in Newcomb Township, north of Mahomet. Clyde obtained his Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in 1897 and was a member of the first graduating class from the University's medical college in 1902. He immediately started his practice in Urbana and married Grace Alward a year later. Clyde served in the United States Army for about nine months in 1918 and 1919 as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps. From 1923 to 1940, he served as a Major and Colonel in the Illinois National Guard. Clyde was also a member of several prestigious local organizations and patriotic and fraternal groups, including the Knights of Pythias, the Urbana Elks, the Board of Education, the Association of Commerce, and the Improved Order of Red Men. Subseries 3.1 contains biographical materials, including, for example, lapel pins from the Order of Red Men, Clyde's physician records of birth in Champaign County, and correspondence about University of Illinois alumni and reunion activities. Subseries 3.2 contains Clyde's incoming correspondence. The bulk of the letters are from Clyde's wife, Grace Alward, starting in 1901 and leading up to their marriage in 1903. Subseries 3.3 contains incoming correspondence to both Clyde and Grace Gulick starting in 1918. The bulk of the letters are from their children, Elizabeth and Jesse "Rich" Gulick, as they pursued their respective careers in the 1930s and 1940s. Series 4 This series contains the records of Grace Alward Gulick (1875-1958). Born July 29, 1875 in Canton, IL to Benjamin and Eliza Alward, Grace was one of 11 children. She remained close with some of her siblings for several years, most notably Carrie and Mabel Alward, who resided on the family farm in Canton. Grace graduated from the University of Illinois in 1896. Subsequently, she taught high school classes in Cuba, Illinois and served as principal of Canton grade schools. She married Clyde Gulick in 1903 and became an established member of the Urbana community, becoming a charter member of the Champaign and Urbana Women's Club and ultimately living in the city for 55 years. Grace died July 2, 1958. Subseries 4.1 contains Grace's biographical materials and creative writings. A writer of fiction and poetry, Grace penned several manuscripts and even inquired into the possibility of publication. In 1942, she composed a song entitled "Peace and Democracy," which she registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. Folder 3 in Box 9 (Unique Box ID 871) contains the certificate of copyright, as well as correspondence related to the song. Subseries 4.2 contains incoming correspondence from many friends and family members. The bulk of the letters were sent by Clyde, starting with his courtship of Grace in 1896 and leading up to their marriage. Additionally, folder 12 in Box 9 (Unique Box ID 871) contains periodic correspondence from Clyde 1913-1936, years that included times away on duty in the U.S. Army and Civilian Conservation Corps. Other notable correspondents include Elizabeth Gulick, Carrie Alward (who also wrote to both Grace and Elizabeth when the latter was home to care for her elderly mother), Sarah Elizabeth Alward, and Gertrude Higgs, who helped trace the family's genealogy.

Subseries 4.3 contains outgoing correspondence, including drafts and returned mail to various recipients. Series 5 This series contains the records of Jesse Richard Gulick (August 4, 1910 – August 24, 1976), Elizabeth Gulick's brother. Named after his grandfather, he was known to the immediate family as Rich. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1928 and the University of Illinois in 1933 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Rich was a highway engineer by trade. In the early years of his career, he worked for the Illinois Division of Highways and on various road construction projects in Champaign County, Springfield, and Ottawa, Illinois. Several of the records in this series comprise professional correspondence, while the letters he wrote to his family in the 1930s (as seen in the correspondence subseries for Elizabeth, Clyde, and Grace) shed some light on his day-to-day life at that time. In 1937, Rich joined the United States Army, serving as First Lieutenant and eventually Captain of the Corps of Engineers until 1941. For a few years during the Second World War, Rich served in the South Pacific—first in New Guinea and then in the Philippines. This series contains his army dog tag, registration cards, training manuals, and some other U.S. service materials. Series 5 is also notable for its genealogical material. Rich created an extensive family tree for this particular branch of Gulicks. The tree can be found in Rich's family history book and accompanying chart (a copy of which is in the family file onsite at the Champaign County Historical Archives). Series 6 Jesse Richard Gulick (the Elder) (1840-1921) was Clyde's father. This series contains his last will and testament, certificates relating to his legal career, and a copy of a speech. Louisa Everett Gulick (1848-1913) was Clyde's mother. This series contains two obituaries honoring her life. Joseph P. Gulick (1870-1937) was Clyde's brother. This series contains incoming correspondence and a copy of an announcement of his marriage to Lillian Russel Terwilleger. Grace Margaret Gulick Cook (1879-1945) was Clyde's sister. The newspaper clippings in this folder refer to her marriage to Harvey E. Cook and contain some biographical information. It also includes one piece of correspondence from a C.P. Gulick. Series 7 This series contains the records of Alward family members closest to Elizabeth and Grace Gulick, as well as significant genealogical materials related to the Alward family as a whole. The genealogy notes in subseries 7.1 contain lists of marriages, epitaphs, biographies, and reports on records, showing significant research into the history of the Alward family. It appears that Grace Alward Gulick performed much of this research. According to the notes, the family can be traced to 1665, when ancestors left England and settled in New Jersey. Two certificates attest to the service of two Alward men in the Revolutionary War. The subseries also contains a statement or certificate of marriage of Benjamin Alward and Eliza E. Holcomb (Grace's parents). Subseries 7.2 contains Alward family farm and land records and legal correspondence. The Alward farm in Canton Township, Illinois was at the center of several family and legal disputes over many years. For

genealogical purposes, the abstract of records of the 1923 Supreme Court appeal is helpful in providing the history of the farm, as well as brief biographies of and relationships between various Alward family members. Carrie and Mabel Alward lived on the farm for many years, and Grace and Elizabeth Gulick were involved in the caretaking of both the sisters and their land. In addition to yielding crops, the farm provided coal, which the Alwards arranged to be mined by various companies over several years in the mid-twentieth century. In the 1950s and 1960s, the land was managed by Green Farm Management Service; records related to this company include copies of leases, crop sharing agreements, and maps of the property. Subseries 7.3 contains the records of six of Grace's eleven siblings: Benjamin, Carrie, Eliza (known as Lydia), George, Mabel, and Sarah Elizabeth.
