Apprenticeships Explained Apprentices require: • A contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week (unless exceptional circumstances exist) • To be paid the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices £3.30 per hour

The government has committed to significantly increase the number of new Apprenticeships in England to over 3 million starts in the next 5 years.

• Paid training release (i.e. College day release or time away from the work station)

Apprenticeships are a key part of the most successful skills systems across the world. High quality training and support increases the level of skills obtained which are fundamental for business growth.

• Suitable insurance to cover the Apprentice as an employee of your organisation

Apprenticeships are affordable, flexible and above all can improve productivity and efficiency, something which is vitally important if we are to compete in our own and international markets. Every West Suffolk College Apprenticeship is tailored to meet your organisational needs. Whether that is for a new position or for an existing member of staff looking for new skills and knowledge in order to progress within your business. Additional courses are available to WSC Apprentices, ask for details of our The West Suffolk College Apprenticeship Advantage offer. Government funding is available to cover the majority of fees associated with an Apprenticeship programme. We will walk you through the eligibility criteria making the process as easy as possible for your organisation. There are a number of grants available to offset fees and we can advise to help obtain this funding.

“We are very happy with the training he had and I would recommend having an Apprentice to any employer” Terry Taylor, Owner, Haverhill Test Centre

“Recent studies of the economic impact of the Apprenticeship programme show that the impact is very positive for employers, apprentices and the economy. In fact the benefit of level 2 programmes for apprentices is a significant earnings premium of £48,000 to £74,000 more over a lifetime compared with their nonapprentice peers at a similar level*** which is almost as much as the benefit of level 3 and above programmes.” Stewart Segal – AELP CEO

“As a small business here in Suffolk I had made the decision to take on an apprentice. Luckily for me I rang West Suffolk College and they responded straight away with my enquiry and answered nearly all my questions over the telephone.

Work Experience

The initial meeting was just great, the Business Advisor explained everything so that I had a complete understanding of how it all works. Within a short time of the meeting WSC had given me a shortlist of candidates who were interested in the apprentice position. After conducting the interviews we had decided on our candidate again all with the help of West Suffolk College. Our apprentice has been with our company for a few weeks now and I am delighted to say what a great decision it was to take an apprentice, in fact so good we are going to do it again.

All of our full time college courses have a compulsory work experience element. This means that as employers you have the opportunity to interact with our learners to give them a chance to develop key workplace skills and also give you the opportunity to view Your Next Employee. Work experience is very successful and results in a high number of learners being offered part time or permanent positions by the employers that hosted them. For you the employer, work experience gives you an opportunity to look at and trial potential future employees without having to pay expensive advertising or recruiting fees.

I cannot recommend West Suffolk College highly enough, they have made the whole process so easy and clear. Thank you to all the team at West Suffolk College.”

Work experience placements are also an invaluable way of enhancing our students’ prospects and provide the chance for them to try out a career but also experience what employers demand in terms of work skills and attitudes. If you do not have vacancies a reference from you may help them obtain work elsewhere.

Tony Williamson, Managing Director – Total Solution

A Traineeship is an education and training programme that equips young people with the skills and experience that employers are looking for. The core elements of a Traineeship are work preparation training, English and maths and a work experience placement. Traineeships are the stepping stones for young people to progress in to an Apprenticeship.

Carly Hughes started the Traineeship programme with West Suffolk College, she undertook her work placement in Business Administration at Havebury Housing and is now an Apprentice at Bury Town Football Club.

The programme is an excellent opportunity for employers to ‘try before you buy’ and make a decision on the particular individual before committing to an Apprenticeship or Employment. The programme puts the employer firmly in control as you can request preemployment training and skills that are required by your industry.

“I undertook a Traineeship because I wanted to get out and actually start working, but unfortunately I had no qualifications or work experience. For me the Traineeship programme was the best option to start me out in working life and to get some work experience to hopefully help me out for my future.”

The Traineeship programmes provides a number of benefits to the employer, the employer can: • Develop the next generation from your local community, ensuring a loyal, talented workforce • Your current employees will have the opportunity to build their mentoring and coaching skills • Traineeships are tailored to the needs of the employer and the individual • Traineeships can form part of a business’s commitment to corporate social responsibility • You could be eligible for a Grant of £1500 if a trainee progresses on to an Apprenticeship within your organisation

i

Lisa Abery-Henning, the Learning & Employment Advisor at Havebury, held high regard and recognition of Carly’s impressive contribution over the course of the 8 week Traineeship stating; “Carly has been an asset to the Team during her time here at Havebury. She is a very conscientious and approachable person and I know she will excel in whatever career she chooses. I will truly miss Carly’s positive attitude.”

As soon as the composition of an apprentice’s framework has been agreed, the employer will be notified of class dates and times, if applicable. 5.ii The timetable for classroom based diplomas, confirming days and times for each apprentice, will be published at least four working weeks before the start of the course and sent to the employer. 5.iii Changes to the programme will be kept to a minimum.

We will:1. Provide one point of contact The College will provide one point of contact who will be the conduit for all communications to the employer. This will include providing a mobile telephone number and personal email address. 2. Further, as the College remains open all year there will be no delay in obtaining a response due to term holidays. 3. Keep employer informed of the progress of their apprentice The College appreciate that the employer needs to be kept informed of the progress of their apprentice/s; as such they will inform the employer of not only the apprentice’s progress but any concerns raised, for example:3.i Absence from any planned College lessons within 48 hours. 3.ii Persistent lateness at College or on any agreed appointments as this occurs. 3.iii Progress with learning and achievement in regard to motivation or attainment on a regular basis (no less than bi-monthly). 4. Report learner progress The College uses an e portfolio, OneFile, as the online record of all workplace learning progress, both for learning assessment and achievement of qualification. All new apprentices will be using OneFile from the start of their qualification and you as the Employer will have real time access, allowing you to be able to view your employee’s progress throughout their programme.

6. Minimise the cancellation of classes The cancellation of classes and visits to the workplace will be kept to a minimum, however, should this be necessary, the College will ensure wherever possible that the employer and apprentices will be informed, prior to the event, so that they are able to attend the workplace and/or re-book visits. 7. Issue apprenticeship qualification and certificates The College will confirm with the employer and apprentice when an apprentice has completed their framework and their apprenticeship certificate has been submitted for claim. This recognises that there is sometimes a significant delay between the College claiming and the results being confirmed by particular awarding organisations. 8. “At Little Wonders we value good quality training which is why all of the staff we have trained have been through West Suffolk College. We have found the training there to be consistent, relevant and good quality with excellent support from the tutors. Although there are cheaper options on the market we do not hesitate to choose WSC, the training that our practitioners have received has helped to provide better outcomes for the children in our setting.” D. “I am writing to you to commend the excellent support I received from Wendy (my assessor) on my diploma 5. She has been excellent in every respect. Whenever I needed to see her or speak to her she always made herself available (even at weekends!) and the quality of her support and guidance has never been less than outstanding. Of all the assessors I have had on my various qualifications she is certainly the very best and I am extremely grateful for all her help.” Peter Cirulis, Manager – Thistledown
