Peg Dawson, Ph.D. Peg Dawson, Ed.D., received her doctorate in school/child clinical psychology from the University of Virginia. She worked as a school psychologist for 16 years in Maine and New Hampshire, and, for the past 20 years, has worked at the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she specializes in the assessment of children and adults with learning and attention disorders. Dawson is co-author of Smart but Scattered and Smart but Scattered Teens.

Executive skills are brain-based skills required for humans to effectively execute, or perform, tasks and solve problems.

Until recently, scientists thought that a surge in neuron and synapse growth happened only during childhood. New research demonstrates that there is another growth spurt in neurons and synapses in adolescence. In other words, teens are primed for learning through experience.

On the other hand, the adolescent brain is ill suited for fully independent decision making about what those experiences should be. Teens are thinking under conditions of intense emotion and high arousal— something called “hot” cognition.

There are at least three different sources of executive skills weaknesses in teens. The first is conditions or diagnoses characterized by deficits in executive skills. These include ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and traumatic brain injuries.

You will need to help your ADHD teen learn executive skills; your son or daughter won’t acquire them through observation or osmosis.



Understand your teen’s innate drive for mastery and control, and focus on opportunities for the teen to pursue objectives related to independence.
