What’s New FULL STEAM AHEAD AT THE RYE ARTS We are very excited to announce new programming at The RAC which will appeal to innovators, creators and artists of all ages. Many of you may be familiar with STEM curriculum and its emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Over the last year, the Rhode Island School of Design and other educators have begun a movement from STEM to STEAM – where the ARTS are integrated to spark design creativity and innovation. With a focus on STEAM, The Rye Arts Center is piloting an exciting array of programs and classes designed to prepare future artists for the 21st century. Our upcoming classes include: MakeyMakey Piano (ages 8-10) is a computerized invention kit that turns ordinary objects into musical instruments. SCRATCH (ages 6-8) is a visually based programming system that creates interactive animated stories set to music. Maker-Maniacs features “LittleBits” technology that helps create works of art powered by science. And returning for another session are perennial favorites Engineering with Lego/K’Nex (ages 7-9) and Minecraft Club (ages 8+). Look for classes marked “STEAM” throughout the Guide for more of these new offerings. And coming soon from The RAC STEAM TEAM, classes that offer 3-D printing!

Thursday, March 27 or Friday, March 28 10:00 am -12:00 pm To register directly go to: racfamousartists.wordpress.com Famous Artists is designed to develop visual literacy in school age children. Created in 1986, it serves both public and independent schools throughout the area. Professional arts educators train parent docents to deliver classroom presentations and hands on projects. Pre-registration by schools is required. This year’s Famous Artist will be the utterly unique Giuseppe Arcimboldo (15261593.) A court painter to the Habsburg Emperors, Arcimboldo is best known for the composite portraits he made in the court of Rudolf II in Prague. These works are composed entirely of fruits, vegetables, sea creatures, weapons, and other physical material. His paintings embodied the mystical world of Rudolf II’s Prague and its fascination with magic, alchemy, and astrology. “Famous Artists is a fabulous program for planting the seeds of cultural literacy in children that blossom into a life-time engagement with the arts.” Jeff Taylor, Docent Trainer, Assistant Professor of Arts Management, SUNY Purchase.

Voice Lessons

The Music School offers opportunities to enhance your experience through:

Your voice is a natural form of self expression. Through professional vocal training you will learn proper diction, tone and technique to develop your voice as an instrument.

• Recitals: Students have the opportunity to perform at three scheduled RAC seasonal recitals—Halloween (October 26), Winter (December 7 and 8) and Spring (June 1 and 8).

Learn the basics of songwriting and composition by examining lyrics, melody and form of popular songs. You will develop the tools to create your own masterpieces.

• Community Performances: Students have the option to perform at RAC events including gallery openings, special events and at local community gatherings, providing an opportunity to earn community service hours as well as the experience of performing live in front of audiences that can number from 20 to 200. • Practice Marathons: Twice a year The Music School holds practice marathons to instill good practice habits and provide students with special incentives. • Student Composition Festival: Students participate in this annual event, receiving special recognition and awards.

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT FOR YOUR CHILD Here are some useful tips for choosing an instrument: Consider your child’s age and physical limitations • Sometimes a child likes the idea of playing a certain instrument only to find out the physical limitations along the way. Have your child hold the instrument to experience how it will feel while being played.

Songwriting & Composition Lessons

THE GUITAR HUB The Music School offers private lessons in all styles of guitar: classical, rock, pop, blues and jazz. Our highly qualified instructors hold degrees from Berklee College of Music, Crane School of Music, SUNY Purchase, and Hartt School of Music.

Music School Policy for Private/Semi-Private, Suzuki, Piano Pals & Guitar Pals Lesson Programs:

When students register in the music lesson programs, they will automatically be enrolled for the entire school term which culminates in June 2014. Payment is required at the time of registration and can be made in full by cash, check or credit card. In order to maximize the benefits of your music lesson program RAC requires that Music School students have an RAC membership. Refer to page 2 to determine the membership level that best meets your individual or family needs. Installment payments are available for credit card users. Your credit card will be automatically charged on the following dates: September 1st, December 1st and March 1st. (Registrations are accepted year round if space is available. Fees will be prorated for private lesson programs and payment schedules set at time of registration). If a student needs to withdraw from the lesson program at any time, The RAC requests notification in writing and three weeks in advance. If applicable, a refund will be issued for the remainder of the lessons at that time. Students who withdraw without proper notification will be charged a three lesson penalty for withdrawal.

Listen to the sound of the instrument and how it is produced • Your child should like the sound of an instrument and feel comfortable with trying to producing an initial sound. Feeling relaxed with an instrument will encourage motivation to practice. This in turn will promote a long lasting love of music. Test drive The Music School! Sign up for one lesson and find the right instrument for you and your child!
