Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption

w Gro

This weekend you're no doubt full! Most of all, I hope you're full of gratitude to God and love of family and friends. Thanksgiving is a great celebration for gratitude. Perhaps after a year of Mercy and an election of great division we can learn a lot from thank you. This weekend is also a new liturgical year. Please don't forget about last week's insert on posture at Mass. If you are able, please kneel after the Holy, Holy through the Amen and then kneel again after the Lamb of God until the communion hymn begins. Remain standing during the hymn until the ministers to the homebound are sent out. Our 2016-17 Covenant makes use of the theme of renovation. There are many building verbs used. While work is done on our building, we also want to build up our community. If you've noticed someone who has not joined us at St. Andrew, take a moment to invite them back to the community. We will need everyone to fill our renovated space with warmth and love. Finally, as Advent begins we are reminded that Christ is not some far removed part of life, but now is the time to be caught up in His presence and serve Him. The world is not perfect, but how do you keep yourself alert to Jesus' presence? Blessings and Peace! Fr. Andy Booms Upcoming Liturgies

Advent is the beginning of a new liturgical year for the Roman Catholic Church. On the first day of Advent, which begins this year on November 27th, the Church celebrates its own kind of New Year’s Day. Advent begins each year on the Sunday closest to November 30th, which is the feast day of Saint Andrew the Apostle. Sometimes people mistakenly think that Advent is part of the Christmas celebration. But actually, Advent is a time of preparation all its own. For the Catholic Church, Christmas doesn’t begin until the first Mass is celebrated on Christmas Eve.

The Sanctuary Lamp is lit in memory of Stephen Stone, Jr. by Barb Doran. To place yourself or some one you know on the prayerline, call Jane Ann Grierson at 695-2084 or the office at 755-8020 .

Currently, there are 50 retired priests of the Diocese and many of these men continue to provide regular ministry in our parishes. Much of their retirement fund is supported directly by your generosity. Please consider making a donation to the Saginaw Priest's Retirement Plan. This can be a onetime offering or perhaps you would consider including this as part of your estate planning. From Today’s Gospel Readings: First Sunday of Advent Jesus said to His disciples: "Therefore stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come."

Reflection: In the 21st century we do not look for Christ ’ s coming with the same intense expectation of the first Christians. Still, we believe Jesus ’ coming is always happening in many unexpected ways. Christ is constantly breaking into our lives to forgive our past, grace and challenge our present and keep our hope alive for the future.

So We Ask Ourselves: What do we do to be keeping awake and vigilant to Jesus ’ entrance into our daily lives? Can we name a time when we experienced His unexpected and surprising presence?

STEWARDSHIP On this first Sunday of Advent Jesus urges his disciples to stay awake and prepare themselves for the Lord’s coming. Good stewards prepare themselves and await Christ’s judgment in joyous expectation. This kind of attitude requires genuine spiritual maturity, the kind that is cultivated by prayer, participation in the sacraments, loving attention to family and one’s communion of faith, and love of one’s neighbor. Are we prepared for the Lord’s second coming? Are we ready to receive Christ? Are we ready to look joyously for Christ’s judgment? RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Your donation for aging religious. “I read that roughly 95% of donations to the Retirement Fund for Religious aid senior religious,” a donor writes. “That’s wonderful when we truly want our donation to work.” Your gift works for elderly religious by helping to furnish medications, nursing care and more.
