Why Citizenship?
Why Citizenship? The theme will enable you to discover how your past work on the Green-Schools programme has positively, influenced people and their local environments worldwide. Action 1: Litter & Waste Review
• The same as original review • We ask you to identify areas for improvement – Food waste disposal – Electronic waste disposal – Lunch box waste – Reduce, reuse – Increase recycling
Step 2: Global Citizenship Energy Review Essential Actions : 1. Energy audit 2. Conduct the global awareness survey
Action 1: Energy Review
• The same as original review • We ask you to identify areas for improvement – Reduce Energy consumption further if possible – Food and energy – eat low carbon? – Energy Star label – energy efficiency – Carbon Calculator – how much carbon does your school emit? – Investigate Climate Change – Investigate where your energy comes from
Action 2:Global Awareness Survey
• Hands-up survey – 14 questions with representative
sample of school only (4th, 5th and 6th class in primary or 15% of school population in secondary)
• Gauge existing awareness levels of different issues related to Global Citizenship. • Pick one question/topic where the students showed lack of awareness and focus on improving • Re-do survey at the end of the school year as part of the monitoring and evaluation step • Repeated in second year work and inputted into the renewal application form.

Optional Actions: • Investigate where do your recyclables go and what they are recycled into • Food waste and composting • How do other countries deal with the whole issue of waste management? • Fair Trade • Let each class choose one of the Global Goals and research it.
Global Citizenship Energy Optional Actions: • Research the nationalities present in your school • Use the Carbon Calculator to find out how much greenhouse gas emissions the school is responsible for • How do other countries use energy? • How do other people across the globe heat their houses? What kind of fuel do they use to cook their food with? • Research the Global Goals that apply to energy.

Workshops are free, open to all schools and are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Booking forms and information can be downloaded from the Green-Schools website.

Workshops for: Junior Primary Senior Primary 1st, 2nd and Transition Year Secondary classes.

Also available are CPD Energy workshops for Primary School Teachers that qualify for ‘Croke Park hours’ and are particularly relevant for schools applying for their Green Flag for Energy.
