1930 Streetcar passengers getting off on University Avenue near Montgomery Wards in Saint Paul.

The majority of streetcars in the Twin City Rapid Transit Company, also known as Twin City Lines, were built between 1870 and 1930. During this time, each streetcar was a “two-man operation” -- a motorman to drive in front, and a conductor to take fares in the rear. By 1932, most of the system’s streetcars were converted to “one-man operation,” with the motorman taking over both duties. Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society

Christopher B. Coleman, Mayor City of Saint Paul

Dear Friends, Very soon, in the spring of 2014, the construction of the Light Rail Transit Green Line will be a distant memory. In its place will be the sounds of the modern urban landscape: light rail cars carrying passengers to work, to ball games and to unique independent shops and large anchor stores from Saint Paul to Minneapolis. Until then, remember that all of the unique and special businesses along the Green Line are eagerly awaiting your business. In fact, now -- during light rail construction -- is when these businesses would welcome you the most! Up and down the 11 miles of the Green Line, you will find businesses owned by the same families for generations, as well as new and well-established businesses owned by newcomers to our nation. Just think: you can go around the world in 11 miles in a microcosm of modern Minnesota! This directory is a listing of those businesses along the Green Line – from Downtown and Lowertown Saint Paul, up University Avenue then finally through Stadium Village and the West Bank at the University of Minnesota.

1952 Trolley cars at 4th and Wabasha in downtown Saint Paul. At the peak of operations for the Twin City Lines, there were 524 miles of track, running from Stillwater in the east to Excelsior in the west. The lines helped shape the current layout of the Twin Cities by attracting businesses, especially where lines intersected, and influencing future infrastructure design. In 1920, annual ridership was at about 238 million. By 1954, ridership had dipped to 86 million, and streetcar service ended soon after.

Before you get your car’s oil changed somewhere else, check this directory first. Flip through it to find a great Thai restaurant for lunch, or when you need a haircut, or when you need to buy a new suit. Along the Green Line, you should find just about anything you might need. We think you’ll find that supporting Green Line businesses is the ultimate win/win -- great products and services for you, and a needed boost for our local, hard-working business owners.

Mayor R.T. Rybak

Mayor Chris Coleman

The business districts include Lowertown, Rice Street/North End, Little Mekong, Historic Rondo, Historic Frogtown, The Midway, and the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone in Saint Paul; and Prospect Park, Stadium Village and the West Bank in Minneapolis. Navigating Cuisine on the Green Line CAMBODIAN CUISINE

Szechuan Cuisine

Dishes often have an understated use of spice, contrasting flavors, textures and temperatures within the overall meal rather than a single dish, plenty of herbs, leaves, pickles, dipping sauces, edible flowers and other garnishes and condiments. Rice is served with almost every meal. A variety of meats, fish, vegetables and noodle dishes are common.

Dishes incorporate bold flavors, particularly the pungency and spiciness resulting from liberal use of garlic and chilli peppers, as well as the unique flavor of the Sichuan pepper. Peanuts, sesame paste, and ginger are also prominent ingredients in Szechuan cooking. Beef is somewhat more common in Szechuan cuisine than it is in other Chinese cuisines.

Common Ingredients: Black Pepper, prahok, which adds a salty tang to many dishes, kroeung paste consisting of cardamom, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and turmeric, as well as lemongrass, galangal, garlic, shallots, cilantro, and kaffir lime leaves.

Common Ingredients: In addition to a variety of meats, tofu, noodles and vegetables, the bold flavor is created with Sichuan pepper, garlic, chilli peppers, broad bean chili paste, ginger, star anise and other spicy herbs, and spices.

CHINESE CUISINE

Along the Green Line visitors can find East African dishes traditionally made in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia. One will find spicy vegetable and meat dishes, usually in the form of wat (or wot), a thick stew, served atop injera, a large sourdough flatbread made out of fermented teff flour.

Chinese restaurants are plenty and visitors can find some jewels scattered along the Green Line, but many call Little Mekong their home.

Cantonese Cuisine

EAST AFRICAN CUISINE

Cantonese is a milder Chinese cuisine. Dishes incorporate a variety of meats, vegetables, tofu, rice and noodles. Spices are used in modest amounts to avoid overwhelming the flavors of the primary ingredients.

Common Ingredients: Meat such as beef, chicken, fish and lamb. Legumes such as split peas or lentils or vegetables such as potato carrots and chard. Additional flavors are added in a variety of combinations with onion, garlic, ginger, berbere, cardamom, tumeric, cumin and jalapeños. Fact: Ethiopians eat with their right hands, using pieces of injera to pick up bites of entrées and side dishes. Utensils are rarely used with Ethiopian cuisine.

Tanpopo Restaurant – Hiyashi Chuka: Chilled noodles with marinated pork, carrots, tamago-yaki, cucumber, scallions and sesame sauce.

JAPANESE CUISINE

One of the less spicy of Asian cuisines, Japanese dishes are based on combining steamed white rice with one or several main dishes and side dishes. This may be accompanied by a clear or miso soup and some tsukemono (pickles).

Common Ingredients: Besides pork, beef and chicken, Cantonese cuisine incorporates almost all edible meats, however, lamb and goat are rarely eaten. Additional flavors are added through sauces, such as oyster, plum and black bean sauces, as well as spring onion, sugar, salt, soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, vinegar and garlic. Ginger, chili peppers, five-spice powder, powdered black pepper, star anise and a few other spices are used sparingly.

8

Flamingo Restaurant – Sambusa: Pastry Shells stuffed with lentils or beef.

Flamingo Restaurant – Timtimo/Miser: Red split lentils cooked in a spicy sauce that is a mixture of finely chopped onions, seasoned with fresh garlic, ginger, and berbere.

Common Ingredients: Rice, noodles, seafood and a sparing use of meat. Japanese flavors come from a combination of dashi, soy sauce, sake and mirin, vinegar, sugar, and salt. Few herbs and spices are used as an accent and include ginger and red pepper. Some spices and herbs are added as garnish to the finished dish, such as minced ginger. Wasabi, Japanese mustard or grated daikon are sometimes provided as a condiment.

Tanpopo Restaurant – Kimchi Nabe: Hot noodles with home-made kimchi, simmered beef, spinach, tofu and scallions.

9

KOREAN CUISINE

Korean cuisine is based on rice, vegetables, and meats. Kimchi is served often, sometimes at every meal. Common Ingredients: Sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). Spices include red pepper, black pepper, Chinese pepper, cordifolia, mustard, chinensis, garlic, onion, ginger, leek, and scallion.

MEXICAN CUISINE

Dishes often include staples such as corn and beans. Corn is used to make masa, a dough for tamales, tortillas, gorditas. The use of chili peppers gives mexican food its spicy kick. A variety of meats and beans are used in Mexican dishes and are often accompanied by rice.

Common Ingredients: Herbs and spices in Mexican cuisine are chili powder, oregano, cilantro, epazote, cinnamon, and cocoa. Chipotle, a smoke-dried jalapeño chilli, is also common in Mexican cuisine. Many dishes also contain garlic and onions. Meats include beef, pork, chicken and fish. Cheese such as Oaxaca and panela, are made all over Mexico.

flakes, sweet chili sauce, sliced chili peppers in rice vinegar, sriracha sauce, or a spicy chili sauce or paste called nam phrik. Rice, sticky rice, or rice noodles are often served to counteract the spiciness. Fact: In traditional households, diners eat Thai food with the right hand while seated on mats or carpets on the floor.

MIDDLE EASTERN CUISINE

VIETNAMESE CUISINE

Dishes often include wheat or rice. Most regions in the Middle East use spices, though the cuisine is not generally spicy. Some popular dishes include kibbeh, shawarma and falafel. Middle Eastern restaurants often serve hummus and pita bread.

Vietnamese cooking uses fresh ingredients, minimal oil, and herbs and vegetables. Often thought of as one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. Common Ingredients: Ingredients include fish sauce, shrimp paste, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, as well as lemongrass, and mint. Many dishes are made with fish, chicken, pork, beef, seafood and tofu.

Common Ingredients: Olives and olive oil, pitas, honey, sesame seeds, dates, sumac, chickpeas, fava beans, mint and parsley. In addition, a stew will include a small amount of cinnamon, cloves, cumin, and coriander. Other dishes include beef stroganoff, cabbage and meat roll and pel’meni. Common Ingredients: Cabbage, potatoes, root vegetables, boiled meat, fish, rice, onions, celery, dill, gravies and sauces.

THE WIENERY

WEST BANK

Historically home to some of the largest communities of immigrants in Minneapolis, the West Bank is rich with culture, as reflected in its theaters, music clubs, shops and restaurants.

MPLS

ON THE GREEN LINE The historic West Bank district of Minneapolis, also known as Cedar-Riverside, is one of the most diverse and densely populated areas along the Green Line. Running eastward from Cedar Avenue to the Mississippi River, the West Bank includes a significant college population, including the West Bank campus of the University of Minnesota, Augsburg College, and the University of St. Catherine’s Minneapolis campus. The area also includes a flourishing arts community, including the University of Minnesota West Bank Arts Quarter, a major hospital, and two prominent high-rise apartment complexes: more than 1,800 units in Riverside Plaza and The Cedars. The area also features many popular live music venues (coffee houses and pubs), popular restaurants, and stations for both the Green Line (Central Corridor) and Blue Line (Hiawatha) light rail transit.

In 1910, Cedar-Riverside was home to more than 6,000 Swedes, and Cedar Avenue was called Snusgatan, or Snoose Boulevard, because of its large number of Swedish saloons and dance halls.

West Bank – Minneapolis

Meet Pat & KJ Starr, owners of The Wienery in West Bank. Located across the street from Midwest Mountaineering and a few doors down from the Cedar Cultural Center, The Wienery has become a West Bank icon. Housed in the same building as Edna’s, a former West Bank institution, The Wienery is run by the Starr family, who have based their business model after the late owner of Edna’s and her diner- “Food is love, business is life.” Loyal regulars, University of Minnesota students and national t.v. coverage (“Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives”) have helped this restaurant solidify its reputation as a key destination in the West Bank neighborhood. With a full menu and each meal made to order, everyone is sure to find a favorite item on The Wienery menu – vegans & vegetarians, too!

BUN MI

STADIUM VILLAGE

Immediately adjacent to the University of Minnesota, and home to TCF Bank Stadium, Stadium Village features a vibrant array of restaurants, bars and shops.

ON THE GREEN LINE Stadium Village, near the East Bank campus of the University of Minnesota, is located at the heart of an economically diverse and growing metropolitan area. The heart of the neighborhood is the intersection of Oak Street Southeast and Washington Avenue Southeast. The Stadium Village name comes from the area’s close association with the University of Minnesota. College football fans know the area as home to the old Memorial Stadium, which was torn down in 1992. Today the area is the home to TCF Bank Stadium, which opened in 2009. Other popular sports venues in the area include Williams Arena (basketball) and Mariucci Arena (hockey).

Did you know?

Memorial Stadium, also known as the “Brick House,” was the home of the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1924 until 1981. On November 15, 1924, in a game dedicating the new Memorial Stadium, the Gophers knocked Illinois star tailback Red Grange out of the game en route to a 20-7 upset victory.

VIETNAMESE SANDWICHES

Stadium Village is a bustling, robust community year-round. Its population ebbs and flows from a few thousand University of Minnesota students, employees and visitors on an average day to tens of thousands of people on days of major sporting events. A vibrant array of restaurants, bars and shops in Stadium Village, many of which have been around for decades, serve the needs of local residents and visitors. Because of the high visibility of the Stadium Village area as a sports locale, many in the community consider it to be the heart of the University of Minnesota campus.

Ted & Sherman were friends long before they attended the University of Minnesota together, but it was after their days as Gophers that their idea of a banh mi restaurant was born. They locked down an ideal location in Stadium Village, between Big 10 Restaurant and Jamba Juice, to start the area’s first made-to-order Asian-American sandwich shop. Fast and friendly service, a variety of menu options, and U of M foot traffic, has kept the Bun Mi doors busy since 2009. With pork, tofu or chicken, plus fresh baguette bread topped with traditional Vietnamese flavors, it’s no surprise why these sandwiches have people coming back for more!

FUN FACT: “Bun” Mi is a pun on the pronunciation of the traditional spelling “banh.” 21

PROSPECT PARK

To visitors from the east, Prospect Park is the gateway to Minneapolis, home to hundreds of University of Minnesota students, and the locale for several notable shops and restaurants.

MPLS

The Prospect Park area is immediately east of the University of Minnesota East Bank campus and health services complex. Specifically, Prospect Park is bounded by a major railroad yard to the north, Saint Paul to the east, the Mississippi River to the south and the Stadium Village area of the University of Minnesota to the west. The most prominent landmarks in Prospect Park are the Prospect Park Water Tower (with its prominent witch’s hat top) and Tower Hill Park. The area is home to a diverse array of uses: families reside in single-family homes near Tower Hill Park, university students live in apartments on the west side, and the northern section is a mix of light industry, rail yards and remnant grain silos. University Avenue in Prospect Park is also home to a wide mix of retail businesses and restaurants.

BARBER–STYLIST Prospect Park – Minneapolis

Meet Pete Lebak, owner of Pete Lebak Barbers.

ON THE GREEN LINE

1914-1915 – Prospect Park water tower, Minneapolis.

PETE LEBAK

The Prospect Park Water Tower is said to be the inspiration for the Bob Dylan song, “All Along the Watchtower.” Dylan would have routinely seen the Water Tower while living in the Dinkytown neighborhood of Minneapolis, adjacent to the University of Minnesota, in 1959.

Pete Lebak’s barber shop is a neighborhood institution in Prospect Park. He’s been here for more than 30 years. Pete is a Vietnam vet and a well-known raconteur, pundit, analyst and consummate barber. He laughs that he has had “every job there is,” including truck driving, construction, the Army, and on the oil fields of South America. After relocating to Minnesota back in the 60s, Pete has grown his business with the wordof-mouth recommendations given by his loyal clientele. Pete’s knowledge of the neighborhood and many interests give him the special something a successful stylist or barber needs: the art of conversation and storytelling.

FUN FACT: Pete’s yellow lab Bug (short for “Emily’s First Ladybug #17”) is there every day to greet customers.

RAYMOND CREATIVE

ENTERPRISE ZONE

Once known as the “West Midway” the Raymond Avenue area is enjoying a renaissance featuring live/work art spaces, sidewalk cafes and coffee shops.

STP

ON THE GREEN LINE

Did you know?

From the post-Civil War years to the mid-20th Century, the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone was one of America’s largest industrial and commercial freight facility areas. By 1880, nine railroads came into Minneapolis or Saint Paul, each maintaining individual terminals and the area became a clearinghouse for most freight bound either west or east.

32

The Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone runs west to east from Emerald Street to Cleveland Avenue in Saint Paul, with State Highway 280 running north/south directly through the middle. Once commonly known as the West Midway of Saint Paul, the area was then the city’s largest industrial district. Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone’s historic architecture reflects that heritage, with buildings developed to take advantage of the area’s proximity to rail and highway transportation. The “Creative Enterprise Zone” name reflects local interest in transforming the Raymond Avenue area from its heavy industrial heritage to a new era of livable, mixed-use neighborhoods. Already, many historic buildings have been converted to condominiums, apartments and live-work art spaces. Sidewalk cafes and coffee shops in the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone serve residents, local workers and visitors. The next era will reflect local interest in making the area a center of creativity and enterprise. Blue-collar and white-collar businesses will co-mingle in the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone, reflecting a blend of the area’s cultural past and its new next stage, with a variety of light manufacturing, business start-ups, professional offices, and non-profit organizations.

TWIN CITIES REPTILES Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone – Saint Paul

Meet Bruce Delles, owner of Twin Cities Reptiles in Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone. Arachnids, pythons & lizards – oh my! Bruce keeps his store stocked with pets of all shapes and sizes. Although you won’t find any cats or dogs here, you will find a full line of supplies for every pet imaginable. Twin Cities Reptiles has established itself as the oldest and largest reptile store in Minnesota, and Bruce can attribute that to his knowledgeable staff and their camaraderie with customers, saying, “We’re a business, but that’s not the most important part of our work.” Stop in for a unique experience exploring mysterious reptiles and much more!

FUN FACT: The store breeds reptiles in house!

THE MIDWAY

Located midway between Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the Midway District is today one of Saint Paul’s most popular shopping areas.

Did you know?

The southeast corner of Snelling and University Avenues, now home to the Midway Shopping Center, was once home to the main construction and repair shop for the Twin City Rapid Transit Company, the transportation company that originally operated Twin Cities streetcars and later buses until 1962. The Snelling Avenue Station & Shops expanded over the years and became a major garage for the bus system until it was shut down and demolished in 2001.

FLAMINGO RESTAURANT

The Midway area of Saint Paul is bounded by Pierce Butler Route on the north, North Lexington Parkway on the east, University Avenue on the south and Cleveland Avenue on the west. The name comes from the fact that the area is almost literally midway between the downtowns of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The Midway is also home to the Twin Cities’ only Amtrak passenger rail terminal, the city’s warehouse district, and a diverse mix of residential and commercial properties, including Midway Center, one of Saint Paul’s key shopping areas. A variety of retail stores, grocers and restaurants, operated by owners representing a variety of nationalities, provide a bustling mix of commerce and traffic on any day of the week. The key Midway intersection of University Avenue and Snelling Avenue is one of the busiest in all of the Twin Cities – a far cry from a century and a half ago, when the area was a giant prairie between Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The Midway area is a retail bonanza for shoppers, between its permanent retail stores on and around University Avenue, and the Minnesota State Fair, one of the nation’s most popular state fairs, attracting more than 1.7 million visitors during its annual two-week run before Labor Day. When the State Fair is not running, its property hosts year-round a variety of large-scale wholesale and retail sales, auctions and shows, typically attracting several thousand visitors for each event.

As an Ethiopian native, Shegitu recognized the need for authentic East African cuisine in the Twin Cities. Now she cooks up traditional dishes such as sambusa, a homemade pastry shell filled with lentils or beef, and injera, flat and porous bread made from an Ethiopian grain and wheat. Fresh ingredients and a variety of traditional flavors will make your experience at Flamingo a unique one. Customers can expect to feel at home when dining at Flamingo because according to Shegitu, “that’s what the community has done for us.”

FUN FACT: Shegitu is a published author, a public speaker, and is starting a job training and language skills school for refugees in Ethiopia who hope to come to the United States! 39

HISTORIC

FROGTOWN

Polish, German, and Irish immigrants were among the early inhabitants of Frogtown; the area continues to feature a diverse mix of cultures and cuisines.

ST P

Historic Frogtown, located north of University Avenue, starting near the Minnesota State Capitol at Rice Street and ending west at Lexington Parkway, has, from its earliest days, been home to immigrants from around the world. Originally settled in the 1860s, the neighborhood gets its name from its first European settlers, GermanBohemians, who noted the number of frogs that lived in the swampy terrain and called the area “Froschenberg” or “frog city.” Families from Southeast Asia, Africa and Central and South America arrived in the late 20th century, creating one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the region.

Did you know?

A 12-acre site on Lafond Avenue, once home to the Sisters of Good Shepherd Convent, will someday become an urban farm, recreation area and nature sanctuary for Frogtown. The site was purchased by the Trust for Public Land from the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation.

TRUNG NAM FRENCH BAKERY

University Avenue storefronts, home to dozens of small businesses, reflect the history of commerce along what was once one of the region’s busiest streetcar lines. Historic buildings where car dealerships, theaters, night clubs and industrial showrooms once thrived now offer restaurants, grocery stores, retail and service businesses from around the world. The rich variety of places to visit, things to do and food to eat make Historic Frogtown an ideal choice for visitors looking for a first-hand experience of Saint Paul’s many cultures.

It’s well-known that the French have the best baked goods in the world, but what you might not know is that you can find those goodies right here! Down the street from Ngon Vietnamese Bistro and Hickory Hut, Trung Nam serves up fresh croissants and baguettes that are baked daily in-house. Since 1989, this family-run bakery has had customers from around the globe due to their perfected croissants. Hungry for more? Try the House Sandwich, Banh Mi Thit, made on a fresh baguette. Stop in before 1 p.m. to make sure you don’t miss out on these world-famous treats!

FUN FACT: Trung Nam’s croissant was voted ‘Best Croissant’ by MSP Magazine in 2007. 49

RONDO

Located on the western edge of Saint Paul, and the historic center of Saint Paul’s African-American population, Rondo is home to several high-quality ethnic restaurants and shops.

STP

ON THE GREEN LINE Rondo Avenue was the heart of Saint Paul’s most prominent African-American community dating back to the years just after the Civil War. By the 20th century, the neighborhood centered around Rondo Avenue was home to thousands of residents who had established businesses, opened schools, founded churches and built a tightly-knit community. The Rondo neighborhood nurtured men and women who went on to lead the nation in arts and athletics, civil rights and education, law and politics. NAACP Executive Director Roy Wilkins, world-renowned photographer Gordon Parks and Hall of Fame baseball great Dave Winfield all trace their roots to Rondo.

Did you know?

In 1892, James H. Burrell, a former Pullman porter, was appointed the first African-American officer of the Saint Paul Police Department. (This was 20 years before New York City appointed its first African-American police officer.) Burrell served continuously at the department’s Rondo Sub-Station.

54

In the 1960s, Rondo Avenue along with much of the heart of the neighborhood was demolished as part of the construction of Interstate 94. Undaunted, the community has kept the spirit of Rondo alive. The annual Rondo Days celebration and the Selby Avenue Jazz Festival continue the neighborhood’s legacy of celebrating its artists and culture, as well as honoring the elders who have sustained the community while celebrating the young people who will carry it forward. A host of communitybased organizations are preserving and building upon the roots of a neighborhood whose rich legacy is an important piece of Saint Paul’s past, present, and future.

LITTLE

MEKONG

Once home to the popular Lang’s Sweet Shop and Suzie Q Cafe, Little Mekong is Saint Paul’s newest district, and features many popular Asian restaurants.

BANGKOK CUISINE Little Mekong – Saint Paul

Meet Jai Vang, owner of Bangkok Cuisine in Little Mekong.

STP

ON THE GREEN LINE Saint Paul’s Little Mekong is a business and cultural district, stretching for five blocks of University Avenue between Mackubin and Galtier and home to more than 100 small and locally-owned businesses offering authentic food, gifts, clothing and services from the many cultures of Southeast Asia. The area’s name derives from the Mekong River, which flows from China through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Nearly 40,000 residents of Saint Paul now trace their roots to one of those countries from where they or their parents or grandparents were displaced by war and persecution. From their homelands, they have enriched the whole community with art and music and food and flavor that can all be found in Little Mekong. Saint Paul has embraced Little Mekong as a great addition to University Avenue—as a wonderful place for residents and visitors alike to explore a rich variety of cultures and traditions.

Jai, a Saint Paul native, isn’t scared of a little dust and the sounds of jackhammers. In fact, he opened his restaurant in the heat of light rail construction in 2011! Actually he felt lucky to find space to open Bangkok Cuisine right on University Avenue because to him, this area is home. With his family’s support and dedication, they’ve opened a restaurant that will give their customers a truly Thai experience. Located in the heart of Little Mekong, they are able to reach out to the diverse community right in their own neighborhood to bring them deliciously authentic food. Come meet the friendly family at Bangkok Cuisine and let the food speak for itself!

Located immediately north of downtown Saint Paul, and adjacent to the Capitol area, the Rice Street neighborhood continues to be a popular business district.

UNIVERSITY BUFFET

Rice Street/North End – Saint Paul Meet Henry Kwok, owner of The University Buffet

ca. 1900 – Rice Street and University Avenue, Saint Paul. Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society

Did you know? Oakland Cemetery, just three blocks east of Rice Street, on Jackson Street, is Saint Paul’s oldest public cemetery, and is the resting place of many of the city’s and state’s original developers, including Henry Rice, Henry Sibley, Alexander Ramsey, Norman Kittson and Amherst Wilder.

66

The Rice Street area of Saint Paul, which begins just south of University Avenue and the state capitol, at I-94, and continues north to Larpenteur Avenue, is one of the city’s most historic areas. Named for Henry Rice, a prominent Saint Paul real estate developer, and one of the state’s first U.S. senators, the Rice Street area has a distinctly working-class feel. Located north of downtown Saint Paul, the Rice Street area in the late 1800s quickly became known as the North End. The railroad tracks that cross Rice Street, north of Como Avenue, and the historic Robin Hood Flour grain elevator (built in 1918), west of the railroad tracks, indicate the area’s origins as a rail and milling district. Since the 1800s, commercial buildings began to line Rice Street to meet a myriad of business interests, and are still one of the area’s most prominent features, even today. The residents of the Rice Street area reflect the history and diversity of Saint Paul. In the 1800s, the area was originally settled by laborers, tradesmen and shopkeepers of British, Irish, German and Scandinavian heritage. Over time, Eastern and Southern Europeans also moved into the neighborhood. In the mid-1900s, a small population of African-Americans moved to the area. Most recently, Rice Street has become home to an increasingly significant number of Asian and Latino residents.

After years in the restaurant business in New York City, Henry Kwok looked west to Minnesota where he saw a better life for his wife and four children, and an easier market to open his restaurants. He began in Willmar, expanded to Moorhead and Fargo, and then his crowning achievement, the University Buffet, in Saint Paul. The University Buffet serves a little bit of everything to please everyone’s palette – from frog legs, sushi and Peking duck to prime rib, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. It’s an ideal place for large groups and families to meet and enjoy a big lunch or dinner together! They also offer take-out, delivery, and catering services.

FUN FACT: They opened right in the middle of the Green Line construction with an eye to the time when the trains are dropping off customers right outside their door! 67

ST P

GOLDEN’S DELI

Lowertown Artist District – Saint Paul Meet Jim Golden, owner of Golden’s Deli in Lowertown Artist District.

ON THE GREEN LINE The Lowertown Artist District is a 180-acre area that runs from Jackson to the Lafayette Bridge and from the river to 7th Street. Lowertown includes Mears Park, Saint Paul Union Depot, the Lower Landing, and the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market. Lowertown is also the oldest part of the whole city. The area’s name comes from the fact that it was originally the lower landing on the Mississippi River, providing the first port of access to the Twin Cities, from the river. From the 1800s to the 1920s, a variety of warehouse, railroad, banking and distribution centers served a bustling community of commerce in Lowertown. Over the next several decades, many of these buildings fell into disrepair or disuse, to the point that Lowertown became an undesirable destination. That began to change in the 1970s, when civic and private investment began to transform unoccupied warehouses, parking lots, and the non-operational Union Depot into use again. Today, the area features a variety of retail businesses, apartments, condominiums and entertainment destinations, many of which center around the arts – hence the term, “Artist District.”

In 1985, Jim Golden ran a stall at the St Paul Farmers Market selling hot coffee and delicious sandwiches. In 1998, he left his stall and made his move across the street to a permanent location offering catering and window service. After renovating the space, he opened as a full café and deli in the heart of Lowertown. Still using fresh produce, meat and products from the Farmers Market, Jim and his friendly staff serve up an expansive breakfast (served all day!) and lunch menu. Stop in for live music, look at the art-filled walls and come back for weeknight happy hour.

70

Lowertown initially began at the end of Jackson Street, at a site on the river once known as the “Lower Landing” and in 1940 renamed “Lambert’s Landing.” Decades ago, commercial river vessels – from paddle-wheelers to tugs – would tie up at the landing to load and unload. At one time, the landing was so popular that steamboats would be lined up on the river. Today, all that remains of “Lambert’s Landing” is a plaque and a small spot along the river.

FUN FACT: Golden’s Deli was the first eco-friendly catering business in the area!
