Summer 2014 At the American Village we recognize the value of supplementing classroom instruction by visits to places which capture the interests, attention, and enthusiasm of students while conveying content related to the courses of study. Each year tens of thousands of students from throughout Alabama and across the Southeast step onto our unique campus and experience the power and drama of America’s journey for liberty, independence, and self-government. They become part of a “revolutionary experience” that is designed to teach and inspire. We are committed to providing young people meaningful opportunities and real experiences to build and demonstrate their skills as good citizens and leaders. We want them to make a personal connection to our shared history as Americans. History is made of the real stories of real people who faced choices fraught with risks and uncertainties and who made decisions and took actions which have shaped our country. As a teacher you play a very important role in the lives of your students. I encourage you to bring them on one of the most important field trips they may ever experience. I hope you will find this catalog of education offerings for 2014 - 2015 helpful in planning your visit to the American Village. Our staff is happy to assist you in making your reservation and answering any questions you may have about programming and what you can expect during your visit. · Call toll free at 1-877-811-1776 or 205-665-3535 in the Birmingham calling area. · Learn more about our programs and make a reservation for your school group by going to our web site www.americanvillage.org and clicking on “American Village Classroom.” Our youth are, in the words of George Washington, “the future guardians of the liberties of the country.” Make sure your students become part of this engaging and inspiring experience! We will consider it a great privilege to welcome you and your students. With thanks for your service to youth and to our Nation, I remain Sincerely,

Tom Walker Chief Executive Officer American Village Citizenship Trust [email protected]

tips for your trip

Programs begin promptly at the scheduled start time, therefore, plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your program in order to check-in, use the restrooms, and prepare to travel back to the 18th century!

Students will be involved in outdoor activities – rain or shine. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Visit www.americanvillage.org for weather policies and procedures.

Help preserve the American Village by disposing of gum before your arrival. We are a smoke free campus. Food and drinks are allowed only in the picnic area.

It is important for all adults to serve as role models for students. Please silence or turn off cell phones once programming begins and avoid talking during scenes. We want students to receive every benefit of experiencing history brought to life by our talented interpreters.

We encourage 1-2 chaperones for every 20 students. Adults are responsible for the behavior of their students. Students receive seating and viewing priority.

REMEMBERING THE PRICE OF LIBERTY A Classroom Project to Honor Our Nation’ s Veterans We invite you and your students to help tell the stories of those in every generation who served and sacrificed for the cause of liberty.

On February 17, 2014 the new National Veterans Shrine and Register of Honor at the American Village was dedicated. Patterned after Philadelphia’s Carpenters Hall, the Shrine features major sculpture and paintings by nationally-renowned artists depicting our veterans’ service and sacrifice for America and its freedom. The Shrine also houses the Register of Honor, a multimedia library containing the photographs, biographical sketches, and stories of America’s veterans. Visitors to the Shrine are able to select and view personalized multimedia presentations honoring individual veterans in the Register of Honor. We have prepared classroom kits to help your students gather information about their family members in order to add their names, histories and stories to the Register of Honor. Email [email protected] or scan the QR code to receive all the information you need to participate in this free project. Please include in your email what grade level you teach.
