Grand Knight’s Message Dear Brothers, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for making the installation dinner such a success. It was something I will remember. We have now been given our Marching Orders by our DD and we must work together to carry them out. We must remember the past and look to the future. The Council has a great deal of talent and we must tap into that talent. We must not leave our new member out in the cold we must include them in what we are doing, we are an inclusive Organization not an exclusive one. We have a number of events coming up and if we all work together we can accomplish them with great success. I have big shoes to fill from our past Grand Knights and I look forward to having them guide me over the next year so that I can help each and every Brother Knight along the way. I had a great talk with our DD and we have come up with great ideas to help the Council grow and to raise funds for the Council. We must also remember that we have a very important date coming up which is August 9th for our Town Hall meeting which will have an effect on the Church so please if you can make that meeting do so and bring your family. The old saying goes the squeaky wheel gets the grease so we need to be very squeaky at that meeting. I look forward to the future and seeing that we will be the example for other Councils to look to and follow. If you're not the lead dog the view does not change. As always Stay Safe Stay Proud To stay up to date, visit our councils calendar online. http://kofcknights.org/CouncilSite/events.asp?CNO=11529 Vivat Jesus! Robert Maras, Grand Knight

MEMBERSHIP REPORT Worthy Grand Knight & Brothers all. As of July l 2016, our Council has grown to 173 members. We have l 01 Associate members and 72 Insurance members. Also included in our membership are 1 Honorary, 9 Honorary Life and 6 Inactive Brothers. Fortunately, we do not have any Brothers on Disability status.

Although we brought in 20 new Brothers during the 2015/2016 Fraternal year, we fell 2 short of making our quota of 22. Congratulations to our Brother Field Agent Shawn Renales on achieving the Insurance quota of 4 new insurance members. Our quotas for 2016/2017 are 11 new Brothers and 4 new Insurance members and I am sure that with your continued help and cooperation, we can reach those quotas and earn the Star Council award. Presently we have 13 First Degree and 8 Second Degree Knights. I hope to see all these Brothers advance into full Knighthood in the Third Degree of our Order. As Degree dates are established, I will be contacting those Brothers . 14 of new Brothers can still win the Shining Armor award If you made your First Degree from October 20, 2015 to present, you have one year from your First Degree date to complete the requirements. If you need help with this, please contact me. Thank you to all the Brothers that helped me during the past Fraternal year. I look forward to your continued interest in the growth of our Council. Some Thoughts….. From Lecturer Bob Purcell

Respect For Life – Revolution of Change There are many things that have been happening that are going to be causing a tremendous ripple in the fabric of our society as we know it. Are the rapid changes in technology compensated with equal growth in the social aspects of our society? Yes coal gives off toxic waste but it provided jobs for thousands of people. Whole cities grew up and thrived. Your writer grew up in Wilkes Barre, Pa. a coal mining town. It provided a way of life for thousands of people. Coal mining was a diminishing trade due to the convenience of oil and gas. It was dying because of natural causes. It was a gradual process but it came about in a more gracious decline over a period of 50 years. There was an opportunity to change one's life and move to greener pastures yet allowed a livable standard for those who remained. Mining was a difficult and dangerous trade, one that requires strength, daring and a helluva constitution to hop into a cage and descend hundreds of feet into the bowels of the earth. Men did it because they loved their families and it provided a living, no frills, certainly not wealth, but a living. I mention this because it depicts a different amount of time for change. I could continue about the travails of Wilkes Barre but there is a greater happening in the world of change. It is occurring in many industries only with a much greater and rapid effect. Let’s view a few examples and explore the effects. In 1998 Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. Within a few years their business model disappeared and that section went bankrupt. Who would think in 1998 that in only three years no one would take pictures on film again. Digital cameras made their appearance in 1975 but progressed in quality and became mainstream in a few short years ...and what happened to Rochester, more importantly what happened to its people. They did what they had to do to survive, other companies did came in but there was a period of transformation that brought hardship to many. That period of time is what is so critical in today's world. Welcome to the "Exponential Age". Things are happening faster with no "grace periods" and hard times for many. If you drove a cab in New York City you are going to hurt. Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars and now they are the largest taxi company in the world. Done in approximately four years flat. Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world and yet they do not own any properties. Changes are happening but is the social structure of our society able withstand the pressures of these changes? So, your son or daughter wants to become a lawyer. You are proud but you know you’re going to be broke. College and law school equals approximately $400,000 dollars. But ...you love them and then there are student loans. But wait, there is a thing available called "IBM Watson" a super brain that can give legal advice with 90% accuracy (so far for more or less basic stuff) with 90% accuracy compared to 70% with humans It is estimated that there will be a sharp decline in the number of lawyers, only specialists will remain and they will be expensive. Watson already helps nurses in diagnosing cancer ... and he just bested the world's chess champion. There are many changes coming eg. auto industry -many big names will not be around but Tesla, Apple and Google are experimenting with newer ideas, How about building a computer and putting it on wheels, not exactly the order one might expect. There are many examples of change but space is limited, suffice it to say that we all are going to be subject to social pressures as a result of these changes. The question is how will we handle these factors that will affect all of us and our children? Will we have the good sense to know that our knowledge and abilities are limited and that we will need prayer more than ever. ....Some additional thoughts: The population of the U.S. is 310,000,000---the population of China is 1,300,000,000. God Bless Bob

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Monica: As you are aware, Bishop O’Connell has initiated a program called Faith in Our Future to review and address the future needs of our Diocese. There are numerous indicators that require a comprehensive look at the future configuration of the Diocese and its Parishes. Each Parish was requested to form a Core Group to review and evaluate its situation and then meet with other Parishes in a “Cohort” group. The Cohort group was then assigned to recommend one of the prescribed models for the future. Our Core Group met several times to evaluate criteria established by the Diocese and then solicit your input in the planning process in the form of the survey that was completed in February. The Cohort group was formed by the Diocese and includes St. Aloysius, St. John’s (Lakehurst) and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (Whiting). Our Cohort group met numerous times during the months of March-May to review and evaluate the data for each Parish and recommended to the Diocesan Planning Council the “Collaborative” Model for our Cohort Group. Under this model, the four Parishes would form formal cooperative relationships for jointly promoting the Gospel and New Evangelization as well as mutually beneficial sharing of programs and resources. The Planning Council responded last week and presented the following “preliminary” recommendations: ●

The Parishes of St Elizabeth Ann Seton and St John’s will be Linked. Under this model 2 or more Parishes share a pastor. Each Parish remain distinct as canon and corporate entities and must have separate finance councils.

The Parishes of St Aloysius and St Monica will Merge to form a new Parish community. The parish will have a new name and the assets and liabilities of the merging parishes are transferred into the newly formed Parish. Under this preliminary recommendation, the worship sites of St. Al’s and St. Monica would both be used.

Please note that these are “preliminary recommendations” and our Cohort Group disagrees with these recommendations and will meet several times to evaluate and respond to the Diocese before October 1, 2016. We are planning to hold a “town hall” meeting in early August to keep you updated and to solicit your input and comments as this phase of the process continues.

COOKS FOR ST. MARTHA Cooks for St. Martha (The patron saint of cooks) are needed. Though I have a group of cooks already, I could really use more so as not to continue calling the same people and wearing out their good nature. A handful of them are Knights and their wives, however, they are only a handful. We like to help people just coming out of the hospital or who are going through treatment (usually cancer). We bring meals for the first week home for a new mother and father or it could also be someone who is recovering from surgery. There might be a family with someone in Hospice. These meals are meant to be temporary until these folks are on their feet again. A fresh meal will be cooked for the whole family or a single person if they live alone. The meals l are delivered to their home ready to eat. As I tell everyone in my message in our Sunday bulletin, "We are many and wish only to serve." If after prayerful thought and discussion you decide you and your wife would like to be part of Saint Martha's Cooks, please call me, Gloria Carlon at (732) 961-7535 to give me your name and phone number. Thank you and God Bless you.
