General Process Overview 1. Submit an application for licensure to the board of nursing where you wish to be licensed. 2. Meet all of the board of nursing’s eligibility requirements to take the NCLEX Examination. 3. Register and pay for the NCLEX examination with Pearson Professional Testing (PPT): www.vue.com/nclex 4. Receive the Authorization To Test (ATT) verifying eligibility. 5. Schedule your exam. You must sit for the NCLEX within 90 days of receiving the ATT.

NCLEX • The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a national exam and is recognized in all states. – Students must register for the NCLEX with Pearson Professional Testing (PPT) and pay a registration fee. – Once PPT receives your eligibility to test from the state board of nursing, they will send the Authorization To Test (ATT).

• Pearson Professional Testing (PPT) has a change fee if you decide to change the board of nursing issuing your eligibility and receiving your scores. • NCLEX Pass Rates for 4/1/13 – 6/30/13: – U-M: 96.55% – Michigan: 86.47% – National: 83%

Applying for RN Licensure in MI • License application is available on the Michigan Board of Nursing (MBN) website: www.michigan.gov/healthlicense • Students should start the application process by March. • UMSN will send the Certification of Education form to the board in mid-May after degree audits are completed.

• MBN will match the Certification of Education form with student’s application. • Once eligibility is verified, the Authorization To Test (ATT) will be sent to the student.

Applying for RN Licensure in MI • Michigan Board of Nursing (MBN) requires fingerprinting. • This must be done by one of the following agencies: Identogo, Cogent Systems, or another LiveScan vendor listed on the website: www.michigan.gov/lsvendor • MBN does not accept fingerprints that were obtained for any purpose other than applying for a nursing license. • Students can get fingerprinted anytime during the application process, and the MBN will keep them on file to match them to your application.

Applying for RN Licensure in Another State

• For licensure and contact information, visit the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN): www.ncsbn.org • Visit the website of the specific state board of nursing in which you will be applying for your RN license. • If your out-of-state application requires an official transcript (with BSN degree conferral posted), please order the transcript directly from the Registrar’s Office or through Wolverine Access. More information is available at: http://ro.umich.edu/knowledgebase.php?ansid=1248

What is a Compact State? • A state that has adopted the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). • The NLC allows an RN to have one multistate license in a primary state of residence (the home state) and to practice in other compact states (remote states). • Michigan is not a compact state so if your primary state of residence is Michigan, you are not eligible for a compact license. • NLC is dependent on state of residence not state in which the NCLEX was taken.

Timeline • February: Apply for Graduation in Wolverine Access. • February - March: Students should be working on the RN licensure application process to allow for processing time. • Mid-May: UMSN will submit the Certification of Completion form to the State of Michigan (timing for students applying out-of-state will differ). • Early-June: U-M Registrar will award degrees and post your BSN degree to your transcript. The official conferral date will be May 1, 2014.
