Iowa Science Standards: “Eco Explorers in Action” has been created to align with the Iowa Common Core for Kindergarten through third grade. Use the Layar app on this page connect you to a website with the corresponding Next Generation Science Standards. What is Layar? Layar is an augmented reality app that allows you to combine a printed document with links to technology resources, such as websites, tools, apps, images, and more. Instructions: In order to use the Layar capabilities, the Layar app must be downloaded to your camera enabled Apple or Android device. After downloading Layar, open the app and hold your Apple or Android device over a page. While viewing a page through the Layar app, click on the screen and Layar will start to ‘read’ the page. Clickable “buttons” will appear on the device screen. You will use these buttons to navigate through the mystery with your students.
Each page of the document will need to be viewed through the Layar app. Assist the students in holding the device over the page, viewing the page in Layar, and clicking on the “buttons” that appear. Students will be asked to write/draw the answers to the questions on their pages. Surveys and quizzes can also be found on many pages. Although you will not have access to the online quiz results, you can view the corrected answers by asking the students to show you results before moving on. Survey: This interactive print document was created as a collaboration between the Iowa State University School of Education, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Clover Kids, and Reiman Gardens. We want to know your opinion on the lesson and what your students learned. Please complete the survey for our research.
All of the neighborhood kids LOVE to play in Eli Furman’s backyard. He has the coolest games, the greatest play set, and the biggest yard. His mom has a big garden with giant sunflowers, but she does get mad when we snack on all of the seeds. His grandfather built us a tunnel where they grow peas in the spring and small pumpkins in the fall, and there is a big shady black locust tree where we have juice pops when it gets hot. But Eli said that there is NO playing at his house today. The whole family is trying to figure out what happened to the parsley plants. Some of the leaves are damaged and broken. They need parsley to make his favorite dish, tabouleh, mixed with tomatoes, lemon juice, and small grain called bulgur. It’s delicious. Only a little parsley is damaged now, but what if it gets worse? What will he do? Don’t worry Eli, Eco Explorers to the rescue! Here’s what I need: one, a picture of the damaged parsley and two, as many clues as you can find. I’ll use all my resources to help you figure out the mystery and get us playing in your backyard! Let’s get started!

Parents: Your child participated in a technology-‐based activity using an iPad or m obile device and this handout. The “Eco Explorers in Action” activity allowed students to use technology as a link between the printed page, websites, videos, and quizzes in a quest to solve a mystery. Students used the Layar app, found at www.layar.com in their investigation. Download the Layar app to your own camera enabled mobile device to assist you in exploring these other activities at home!
