MIDDLEBOROUGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction Learning Events: ● Catch with a partner ● Lead passes with a partner ● In groups of 4, students will have the center snap the ball to the quarterback while a wide receiver goes out for a pass. The fourth player will defend the wide receiver and try to intercept or break up the pass. ● Play Practice- In their groups of 4, students will use the play book given to them to practice running plays. The 4th member of the group can either coach and call the plays, or the group can have two receivers running two different routes. ● 3-Position Pass for Points: The coach tells the receiver which route to run (out of pre-made playbook) and makes the pass to the receiver. Players rotate positions every 5 plays. 1 Point for each successful catch; first team to 15 points wins. ● Pass for Points: One team starts as the offense, the other as defense. The object is for the offense to complete passes to receivers for points. The offense gets 4 downs with the ball regardless of what happens (i.e. an incompletion, completion, or interception). Designate the line of cones marking the "inside" of the first zone as the line of scrimmage. EVERY down will start from here, again, regardless of what happens. The other end of this first zone is just to mark out-of-bounds. The second, third, and fourth zones are worth 1, 2 and 3 points respectively. A pass to a teammate completed in one of these zones receives that many points. An incompletion is worth 0 points, and an interception is worth 1 point for the defending team. After the offense has used their 4 downs (remember, no first downs achieved in this game), the teams switch roles. Remind them to keep track of total points. ● Each student has a football/or in pairs, and practices punting the football from the edge of the soccer field into the middle of the field. Once everybody punts, everybody gets the ball and runs it back in to either go again or hand it off to their partner. ● Ext: Partner is out in the field to receive the punt. He/She runs it in and switches jobs with their partner. ● Punting Contest: Each student will have a football, and will punt the ball as far as they can. Once all students finish punting, they will run out and stand with their football to see who’s traveled the farthest. ● Identifying positions on the defensive side of the ball: Defensive Lineman, Safety (play deepest and defend the long pass), Cornerback (play widest and usually set up across from receivers) ● Game Time Play Practice- In groups of 6, students will use the play book given to them to practice executing running and passing plays. Students will rotate positions which include the center, quarterback, wide receiver, and running back. ●

Scrimmage: After practicing running a variety of set plays, teams will match up with another group to practice running them against a defense. Teams will rotate offense and defense every 3 plays, and must change positions each time they swtich.

Small-sided games: Students will play games of about 6v6 two hand touch. The game will start out with a team punting to the receiving team. The receiving team gets 4 downs to get past the 50, and 4 more downs to score. Players are down when they are tagged with two hands. On 4th down teams can decide to try and score or to punt the ball away. When a team scores the defense “…to prepare all students to excel as educated, responsible, global citizens.”
