STRONG On September 13th, Chicago’s Marty Surges returned to the Big Apple once again, in hopes of becoming Masskrugstemmen Champion. After a ride on the parade float where he enjoyed the festivities and sized up his fellow competitors, Marty and twelve other champion hopefuls took their place in front of over 5,000 people at the GermanAmerican Friendship party in
Central Park. It was a fierce battle, down to the last drop; Marty came in third place with a time of 8:05. It may not have been the win he was looking for, but he’s always a winner to us! We look forward to seeing Marty and other stein-holding heroes compete next year!

Our second Oktoberfest may have come and gone, but we’re still reveling in the aftermath. This year was a whirlwind of local celebs, authentic food, live entertainment and, of course, our home-brewed Oktoberfest. In case you missed any of the excitement, here’s a recap: Erik & Kathy from 101.9 FM kicked things off with a bang of the Bürgmeister mallet on Friday, September 12th. Tim Smithe serenaded the crowds before he tapped into Oktoberfest on the 19th, while Eddie Volkman turned up the fun on the 26th. Aly Bockler from WCIU TV was all about you and me on October 3rd, and WGN TV’s own Pat Tomasulo brought Bavarian spirit on October 10th. Former Chicago Blackhawk Troy

HAVE AN ‘ADVENT’EROUS HOLIDAY From Advent calendars to wreaths, holiday traditions are as vast as the season is cheerful. Here are a few things you may not have known about some seasonal rituals. Everyone loves an excuse to eat a holiday treat, like the ones found in The Advent, or Christmas calendar. But did you know they didn’t always reveal goodies? The Advent calendar actually started in Germany as a plain card with paper backing and 24 windows on the front that revealed various Christmas scenes, poems or holiday messages. Now the windows often open to tempting chocolate treats in seasonal shapes like stars and fir trees.

And then we have the Advent Wreath, or Advent crown, a Christian tradition used as a spiritual preparation for Christmas. Made of various evergreens, the wreath represents continuous life. It is decorated with four candles, one for each week of Advent, and sometimes a fifth candle is placed in the center. A candle is lit the first Sunday of Advent (which starts the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day) and is lit each week until the Sunday before Christmas. If the fifth candle is included, it is often lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas.

DIFFERENT CULTURES. SAME CELEBRATIONS. Sure, Germany and America may speak different languages, have different fare and be in different parts of the world, but when it comes to the holidays, there are many ways we are quite the same. In America, we get into the spirit well before December 25th; hanging decorations and whipping up our favorite recipes. Germany also starts the celebration early, adorning trees with twinkling lights and filling their houses with candles, garland and the sweet smell of baked goodies. While some children choose to write letters to St. Nick in the North Pole, some kids in Germany write letters to The
Christkindle and either leave them on a windowsill or mail them to Himmelstadt where it lives throughout the year. The Christkindle also delivers presents to good girls and boys on Christmas Eve. Naughty boys and girls may get a switch or nothing at all. No matter where you are or how you celebrate, the holidays are a time to be with those you love and share in the joy of the season.

USED WISELY No one likes to waste, especially when it comes to the world’s most delicious brews. At Hofbräuhaus Chicago, our brewing process makes the most of every ingredient while also helping out the local farming community. Here’s how it works: Beer is made by steeping malted barley in hot water to convert starch into sugar, then extracting that sugar into the water. Of its total weight, malted barley is about 75% starch; of which efficient brewers can convert and recover about 90 percent. What is left behind is spent grain. Instead of turning the spent grain into compost or throwing it away, we do something that breweries have done for centuries—give it to local farmers
to feed to their livestock. We provide the grain to the farmer at no charge; in exchange the farmer supplies containers for the grain, and picks it up on a regular basis. Our farmer, Sandy Robinson, raises beef cattle near Genoa, IL, and currently feeds about 75 head of cattle. According to Sandy, the cows “absolutely love” the grain; but

The spent grains can, however, be used in a ratio of about 2:1 utilizing conventional feed. With each cow eating about 25 pounds per day, it’s easy to see why this system has stood the test of time — just like our beer!
