good things are happening AT BON SECOURS CHARITY HEALTH SYSTEM

Thank You to All of Our Wonderful Volunteers! 185 volunteers from across the entire Bon Secours Charity Health System gathered on April 20 for a National Volunteer Week brunch. More than 570 volunteers served the three hospitals last year – for a total of nearly 98,000 hours. The brunch marked the first time volunteers from St. Anthony, Good Samaritan, and Bon Secours Community were honored at a single event. It was an opportunity for the volunteers to hear from many people about the significant contribution they make daily in the lives of our staff and our patients. Penny Mann, director of volunteers, and volunteer coordinators, Andrea Studnitzer and Amy Moore, welcomed the volunteers. “You are cherished members of our hospital family,” said Mann. “You are essential to our success.” In the past year, volunteers donated 97,652 hours of service to Bon Secours Charity Health System, resulting in an immeasurable savings in resources that can be employed to provide the best possible healthcare in each community where they serve. Volunteers Rosa, Lahey, Harris and Desiderio received special awards and gifts for having served the most hours in their local hospitals last year. At the conclusion of the event, all participated in a raffle for 75 gift certificates and merchandise provided by local businesses.

Golfers designated which hospital would benefit by their participation. Provident Bank, the region’s largest community bank, underwrote the event. Tournament co-chairs were Warwick auto dealer Frank Petrucci of Country Chevrolet and Bon Secours Charity Health System board member Steve Albanese of Access Physical Therapy and Wellness, which has facilities in Montgomery, Port Jervis, Milford, Monroe, Goshen, Wallkill, Armonk and Bedford. Crothall Services Group and MedExcel USA sponsored the grand reception at the end of the day. Golfers were treated to lunch and dinner; the golfers' breakfast and a gift were provided by Morrison Healthcare Food Services. This year’s hole-in-one prize was a choice of a 2013 Ford Fusion or a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco compliments, respectively, of Warwick auto dealers Leo Kaytes Ford and Country Chevrolet.

Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center volunteers Ann Richter of Pomona and Josephine Magliola of Suffern were among the lucky winners of raffle prizes.

Major tournament sponsors included Ramapo Anesthesia Group, Highland Associates, NY Radiology Alliance, Warwick Anethesia, Med World Pharmacy and Apollo Security.

Make This House a Home The members of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 3, a non-profit charitable organization, are no strangers to the residents at Schervier Pavilion. They bring cheer to Schervier residents with a Christmas caroling program ever year, and have recently found another opportunity to express their caring, love and warmth in more ways than one. On Friday, May 4, representatives of the LAOH arrived at Schervier Pavilion with bundles of fleece lap blankets they had crafted as a group project. The visit was a welcome experience for Schervier residents and staff. The presentation of the blankets was part of the Make This House a Home initiative, an ad hoc committee of the Bon Secours Warwick Health Foundation dedicated to developing and building relationships within the community that enhance quality of life for people whose home is Schervier Pavilion or Mount Alverno Center. Julie Cauda and Deirdre Hamling are co-chairs of Make This House a Home. The Foundation oversees and helps generate philanthropic support for the Warwick Health Care Campus.

Rockland Pulmonary and Medical Associates — The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) announced that Rockland Pulmonary and Medical Associates, a member of the Bon Secours Medical Group, has received Recognition from the Physician Practice Connections —PatientCentered Medical Home (PPC-PCMH) program for using evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and longterm participative relationships. The Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) is a promising model of health care delivery that aims to improve the quality and efficiency of care. PPC-PCMH identifies practices that promote partnerships between individual patients and their personal clinicians, instead of treating patient care as the sum of several episodic office visits. Each patient’s care is tended to by clinician-led care teams, who provide for all the patient’s health care needs and coordinate treatments across the health care system. Medical home clinicians demonstrate the benchmarks of patient-centered care, including open scheduling, expanded hours and appropriate use of proven health information systems. Early evaluations of the PPC-PCMH have shown promising results in improving care quality and lowering costs by increasing access to more efficient, more coordinated care. By avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency room visits and using evidence-based treatment guidelines, these early results are producing savings for payers, purchasers and patients. “The patient-centered medical home promises to improve health and health care,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “The active, ongoing relationship between a patient and a clinician in medical homes fosters an all-too-rare goal in care: staying healthy and preventing illness in the first place. PPC-PCMH Recognition shows that Rockland Pulmonary and Medical Associates has tools, systems and resources to provide their patients with the right care at the right time.” To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, Rockland Pulmonary and Medical Associates, demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements embodying characteristics of the medical home. The standards are aligned with the joint principles of the Patient-Centered Medical Home established with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Osteopathic Association.

One To One Learning – Sister Fran Gorsuch, CBS Receives Advocate Award The dictionary defines an advocate as someone who speaks on behalf of another person, especially in a legal context; it is fitting that Sister Fran Gorsuch was honored with the Advocate Award! Sister Fran has brought compassion to each and every ministry she comes in contact with. She has reached out to individuals who were without health insurance, and were in desperate need of help; she has also promoted a program for English classes for staff of Good Samaritan that were not native speakers, helping improve relations amongst both patients and coworkers. Sister Fran was also influential in initiating the new center for victims of sexual and domestic violence, involving local police officials for their assistance and cooperation. Advocacy for the disenfranchised comes through in the positions that Sister Fran holds in different organizations. She serves as the Representative of the Sister on the Board of directors of UNANIIMA International, an NGO at the UN committed to Stopping the Demand for Trafficking of Women and Children, Justice for Immigrants and Refugees and issues around water and the rights of all human beings for access to water. She serves on the Board of Catholic Community Services of Rockland, the Board of Directors of Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, the Bon Secours New York Health System Board of Directors, and the Healthy Priorities Committee of the Rockland County Department of Health. Congratulations Sister Fran and thank you for ALL that you do!

St. Anthony Community Hospital Diagnostic Cardiac Services, receives Echocardiography accreditation by lAC Cardiovascular diseases are the No. I cause of death in the United States. On average, one American dies every 39 seconds of cardiovascular disease - disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The American Heart Association estimates that the direct and indirect cost for cardiovascular disease in the U.S. for 2010 was $503.2 billion. Early detection of life threatening heart disorders and other diseases is possible through the use of Echocardiography procedures 'performed within hospitals, outpatient centers and physicians' offices. While these tests are helpful, there are many facets that contribute to an accurate diagnosis based on Echocardiography testing. The skill of the Echocardiography sonographer performing the examination, the type of equipment used, the background and knowledge of the interpreting physician and quality assurance measures are each critical to quality patient testing. St. Anthony Community Hospital Diagnostic Cardiac Services has been granted a three-year term of accreditation in Echocardiography in the area of Adult Transthoracic by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (lAC) Accreditation by the lAC means that St. Anthony Community Hospital Diagnostic Cardiac Services has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The lAC grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including detailed case study review. lAC accreditation is a "seal of approval" that patients can rely on as an indication that the facility has been carefully critiqued on all aspects of its operations considered relevant by medical experts in the field of Echocardiography. When scheduled for an Echocardiography procedure, patients are encouraged to inquire as to the accreditation status of the facility where their examination will be performed and can learn more by visiting www.intersocietal.orglecho/main/patients.htm. lAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, as illustrated by the support of the national medical societies related to Echocardiography, which include physicians and sonographers. Echocardiography accreditation is required in some states and regions by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and by some private insurers. However, patients should remain vigilant in making sure that their Echocardiography procedures are performed within accredited facilities, because for many facilities accreditation remains a voluntary process.

Ladies Night Out

June 2012

good news

Nearly 90 women gathered at the Erie Trackside Manor in Port Jervis for Bon Secours Community Hospital’s latest Ladies Night Out. The evening featured Dr. Nicholas Belasco, a board-certified physician specializing in family and sports medicine and a Certified ImPACT Consultant. Dr. Belasco presented facts and statistics showing that there is a new class of injuries, overuse injuries, occurring among adolescents and that America’s obsession with sports and a 365-daya-year involvement in practice sessions has been a major contributor to the problem. Parents should be involved, he said, not so much in driving their kids from place to place or making sure they have their equipment or knowing their schedule, but should be involved in what the coaching process is like, what is the level of education of their coaching staff in these medical issues. The largest problem in overuse injury prevention is lack of education and awareness on the part of the authorities like the coaches etc. Parents should be asking questions and be involved in the health aspects of their child’s sports care, not just their participation. Dr. Belasco also cited information from the Stop Sports Injuries coalition (www.stopsportsinjuries.org) that more than 2 million sports injuries occur annually among high school students, and that concussions account for 10 percent of those injuries. One startling revelation was that the average college football lineman receives up to 1,000 potentially concussive hits per season. In addition, Belasco revealed the number one myth associated with these injuries is that to be a true concussion, the patient must lose consciousness. Loss of consciousness means it’s more severe, but even a CAT scan won’t show a normal concussion. All proceeds from Ladies Night Out events are donated to charity.
