What’s The Big Idea?

Good Pitch Review

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

What’s The Big Idea?

The live events, filmmaker workshops, impact producer labs, and online teaching resources that fall under the Good Pitch global programme are devised and delivered by the team at documentary film organisation, BRITDOC. Providing creative and impact mentorship for documentary filmmakers. Building the capacity of a new generation of impact producers. Publishing the Impact Field Guide & Toolkit, the free online resource that guides the reader through the practical process of creating an impact campaign with a documentary film at its centre. All these activities are designed to re-enforce, to energise and to future-proof the independent filmmaker community. The Good Pitch live event, which sits at the heart of the programme, is an exciting piece of highly choreographed public performance. Bringing the world’s best documentary filmmakers together with leading changemakers around urgent social and environmental issues, it forges new coalitions and campaigns that are good for the films and good for society.

AT THE CLIMAX OF THE LIVE GOOD PITCH EVENT,THEY WILL HAVE JUST 7 MINUTES TO PERFECTLY PITCH THEIR FILM AND ASSOCIATED IMPACT CAMPAIGN – TO IGNITE COLLABORATIONS WITH AN EXCEPTIONAL GROUP OF SPECIALLY INVITED PARTICIPANTS. Since 2008 we have hosted flagship events in London, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Toronto, Oslo and Chicago, with the model now spreading to Latin America, India, China, East Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia through the Good Pitch2 programme.

Good Pitch Review

For each live event, a new group of documentary filmmakers is selected to take part. These are exceptional storytellers and independent journalists, capturing urgent global issues: from the experience of school dropouts in Northern Europe to sexual assault, bullying and intimidation amongst youth and young adults in the US; from transgender rights in Turkey to the epic trial of a former Bosnian Serb military leader; from conflict and migration in South Sudan to corruption and the destruction of our natural environments through illegal logging in Borneo.

Over a year, the film teams receive creative mentorship to help develop their film, devise their impact strategy and identify potential partners. At the climax of the live Good Pitch event, they will have just 7 minutes to perfectly pitch their film and associated impact campaign and ignite collaborations with an exceptional group of participants. Participants in the audience at Good Pitch hail from all sectors of civil society: foundations, NGOs, campaigners, philanthropists, policymakers, brands and media. They bring to the table expert knowledge, access to memberships and mailing lists, campaigning and lobbying expertise, connections to policymakers or corporate leaders, and new sources of funding. They have been invited to Good Pitch because of aligned social issues. They have come to Good Pitch to imagine how they could collaborate with independent filmmakers, to be inspired by the power of film. Good Pitch is where strategy is conceived, coalitions are forged, deals struck and pacts made; where the unlikeliest of bedfellows are met and won over; where filmmakers and changemakers spit on their hands and shake: where change begins. Working together with documentary filmmakers, we are a powerful force for change.

OVERHEARD GOOD PITCH HAS GROWN THE FIELD IMMEASURABLY IN TERMS OF RECOGNITION, COLLABORATION, AND FUNDING. Eliza Licht, POV

Whatever change you’d like to see in the world, chances are there’s a Good Pitch documentary waiting for you to contribute your ideas, your contacts, to your cash. Ruth Ann Harnisch The Harnisch Foundation Good Pitch amplifies the heart and soul of BRITDOC – an organisation of passionate people enlivening passion in others. Jessica Sweidan, Synchronicity Earth Good Pitch is an essential gathering of the documentary and social impact community. I have never seen such a pure concentration of the best minds in the industry in one room. Julia Pacetti, JMP Verdant

Good Pitch is the best place to gain momentum and support for an international impact campaign. Mark Edwards, ARTE France The Good Pitch organisers have the best attitude and its tireless work is manifested in the great outcomes of the pitches. Peter M. Organisations who want to produce a Good Pitch2 are invited to attend a flagship event and shadow the BRITDOC production team through filmmaker training as well as the live event, in order to fully evaluate the model, assess the fiscal commitment and decide if it is appropriate for their community. If it’s a good fit, then over the next twelve months the BRITDOC team will work closely with the regional team to share our production toolkit, provide advice on film selection as well as connections to potential participants. A member of our team attends the live event as well as supporting the filmmaker training workshop.

Since 2011, Good Pitch2 events have been hosted in Johannesburg, Buenos Aires, The Hague, Taipei, Mumbai and Sydney, and we can now see the major continental hubs emerging – driven by brilliant and tenacious partners at CNEX, the Indian Documentary Foundation and Shark Island Institute amongst others. We are now working alongside the teams at DOCUBOX in Nairobi and In-Docs in Jakarta to plan the next round of Good Pitch2 events for 2016 and 2017. We are committed to building up a global ‘good’ network of filmmakers and change organisations ready for collaboration, through our regional partners. To get involved [email protected]

Good Pitch2 Argentina 2015 proved to have an incredible impact on the communities that each film reached out to. Each project was able to take their film to a new level, make valuable contacts and learn about the concept of impact production.

DOCUBOX is an East African documentary film fund that offers the emerging East African documentary film community opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, network and benefit from a nurturing and supportive network through financial support for a competitively selected documentary film projects, mentorship and monthly film screenings.

It is rare to witness social change happening in front of your eyes. But that is just what happened at Good Pitch2 India in February 2014.

Southeast Asia is an emerging region with passionate documentary filmmakers telling important stories that reflect on the region’s drive to live in balance between development and social justice.

The Good Pitch2 in Taipei was a carefully planned and very well received event. Two of the three doc projects went ahead with good support added as a result of the event. As it was the first one we were involved in from CNEX, we’ve learned a lot and we are very sure it could work well continuously, as more and more attention is now directed to documentary films.

Holding the event in Sydney in 2014 and 2015 was perfect timing to have introduced the Good Pitch model to Australia. Much of the groundwork had been done. Since 2008, both Shark Island Institute and Documentary Australia Foundation have been working closely with the philanthropic and nonprofit sector, strategically creating partnerships with outstanding documentaries and filmmakers. There is now a deeper understanding in Australia about the power of documentary, and the importance of working to create powerful coalitions around important social issues.

For this second edition, the live event was hosted at Teatro Picadero, a historic independent theatre in the heart of Buenos Aires, while the pitching workshops took place at the British Council’s headquarters in Buenos Aires. The Good Pitch model is key for the Latin American filmmaking community. Our goal is to develop a training strategy that reaches out to filmmakers across the continent.

Good Pitch2 Kenya 2016 will present us with the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the importance of Documentary Film for social change and also showcase outstanding African film talent. We look forward to inspiring a new generation of African philanthropists to support documentary filmmaking.

Documentary in India has had almost no independent funding, and has not been seen as a driver of social change. Good Pitch2 demonstrated in one day that stories are powerful, and can engage and motivate people. It also showed that partnerships and alliances between the public and private sector, NGOs and corporates, can not only be achieved, but will be stronger and more effective than each working alone. Good Pitch2 India was just a beginning, and we are convinced that we can be a driver of social and cultural change by sustaining Good Pitch over a number of years.

Good Pitch2 Southeast Asia, that will take place in 2017, is an important platform for strengthening collaborations and forging new partnerships with strategic stakeholders that ensure great documentaries achieve their impact in society.

FIELD GUIDE The Impact Field Guide & Toolkit is a free online resource designed to help anyone working with film make an even greater impact. To make the guide, we’ve drawn on the work of all our own collaborations, and been informed by conversations, agreements and disagreements with incredibly smart film teams, activists, funders and partners from all over the world. Putting that experience of using film at the heart of impact campaigns

Produced by:

together with a broad theoretical base and some of the most interesting case studies from the last decade, and the result is a tool for the development and implementation of really effective impact campaigns. The guide is intended to offer ideas and approaches so that you don’t have to solve a problem that someone else has already cracked. Having launched in June 2014, it is currently used by over 10,000 filmmakers, activists and campaign groups in more than 25 countries. And to extend the reach of the work, we are working on Spanish and Mandarin versions which will be available in 2016.

Good Pitch Review

The Good Pitch experience was awesome and tremendous. Workshops were critical in formulating message and language around the impact campaign. Relationships formed were extraordinary. We were able to generate huge interest and support for when the film is finished and we are ready to launch. We also conducted a “Brain Trust” the following day and invited key partners and funders for deep discussions. This was a critical part of our research and development and will inform the building of our impact campaign. Marty Syjuco Producer of Almost Sunrise

Thank you all so, so, so much for an INCREDIBLE Good Pitch! I was so blown away by the experience, I haven’t been able to stop talking about it since. It was so powerful to share the film with such a loving and supportive audience, and we were deeply inspired by the experience. I think it really re-energized us, and we couldn’t be more excited about getting the film out into the world now.” Martha Shane Producer of From This Day Forward

Good Pitch gave us a wonderful opportunity to workshop our concepts for outreach, and ultimately come out the far end of the weekend with a scalable and measurable campaign, as well as the start up funds to build the key elements. Jason Zeldes Director of Romeo is Bleeding

It has been an eye opener. A fantastic experience which has led me to see a whole new world for future relationship building and distribution. Dylan Williams Producer of The Borneo Case

It truly was an experience; an inspiriting one and a learning experience. I had heard Good Pitch was ‘super powerful’, prestigious etc, but nothing prepared me for the ‘Good-Ness’ that resonates in this pitch. Thank you for this. Soniya Kirpalani Director of 17 Not Required Indians

The entire Good Pitch experience has been amazing for us and really forced us to conceptualise (and now execute) our outreach plans. Matthew Heineman Director of Escape Fire

G OOD PITCH WAS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN TERMS OF FUNDRAISING AND ELEVATING AWARENESS OF MY WORK AS A FILMMAKER. IT WAS ALSO EXTREMELY SOUL-NOURISHING DUE TO THE SPIRIT OF AUTHENTIC SUPPORT, COLLABORATION AND CAMARADERIE AMONGST STAFF AND FILMMAKERS. Joanna Lipper Director/Producer of The Supreme Price

We couldn’t have made Project Wild Thing without the valuable relationships we formed at Good Pitch. Good Pitch connected us with some amazing partners and new friends, as well as generating interest, excitement and great vibes around the project. DREAMCATCHER KIM LONGINOTTO & LISA STEVENS

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM Brenda is on a mission to disrupt the cycle of neglect, violence, and exploitation endured by girls and women in inner-city Chicago. On any given day, she’s performing interventions with at-risk teenagers, female prisoners, and prostitutes on street corners. She uses unconditional love, non-judgmental support, practical help, whatever it takes for them to change their own lives. But the most powerful weapon in Brenda’s healing arsenal is the raw honesty she can offer because she’s been where they are. For 25 years, she survived as a drug-addicted prostitute, even recruiting innocents into the lifestyle and abandoning her own children. Using unobtrusive verité camera work that inhabits Brenda’s miraculous perspective, master director Kim Longinotto follows intimate stories along Brenda’s path. Child molestation, physical abuse, poverty, and silence are among the common denominators of their dire situations. Like a shining star in the darkness, Brenda appears, doing a dance and upending the paradigm: “Hold the rest of the world accountable for what’s been done to you... it’s not your fault. It’s not your fault.”

presented Dreamcatcher at Good Pitch Chicago in 2013 where they secured production funding from the Chaz & Roger Ebert Foundation, New Energy, the Richard Driehaus Foundation, Chicken & Egg Pictures and individual donors, totalling $21,000, plus additional funding for the impact campaign. The team used these funds to help complete the film, plan the outreach campaign and also donate funds to the Dreamcatcher Foundation; a survivorfounded, survivor-driven, and survivorfocused agency fighting to end human trafficking in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The nonprofit organisation works to prevent the sexual exploitation of at-risk youth and helps them find confidence and stability through education, empowerment, and active prevention. Also at their table sat the nonprofit organisation Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE) who envision a community free from all forms of sexual exploitation, including sexual assault and the commercial sex trade. CAASE offered to screen the film to their vast network of judges, policy makers and change leaders.

Membership organisation Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy pledged to connect the film team to their network of philanthropic funders. The Fledgling Fund, also present at Good Pitch Chicago, has since come on as partners on the impact campaign, as did Ian Darling of Impact Partners, Shark Island Productions and Good Pitch2 Australia.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Dreamcatcher had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2015 where it won the Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary. The film also played at HotDocs, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Sydney Film Festival and over fifty international film festivals.

BRENDA IS ON A MISSION TO DISRUPT THE CYCLE OF NEGLECT, VIOLENCE, AND EXPLOITATION ENDURED BY GIRLS AND WOMEN IN INNER-CITY CHICAGO.

The Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network offered to use the film in their trainings for victims of domestic violence. They provide services to over 800 people a year, including a 24hour domestic violence shelter, emergency shelter and transitional housing.

The film was released in cinemas in the US and UK followed by a broadcast on Showtime (US) and BBC4 (UK). The film will also be broadcast by CBC in Canada, DR TV in Denmark, SVT in Sweden, VG TV in Norway, VRT in Belgium and Foxtel in Australia.

In partnership with The British Council, and with generous support from The Fledgling Fund, Women Make Movies will be hosting public screenings of Dreamcatcher in cities across the US throughout the fall of 2015. Audiences will be invited to join Brenda Myers-Powell from the Dreamcatcher Foundation, and producer Lisa Stevens, for post-screening discussions with local advocates.

THE GENIUS OF MARIAN BANKER WHITE & ANNA FITCH

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM After she is diagnosed at age 61 with earlyonset Alzheimer’s, life begins to change for Pam White and everyone around her. Pam’s husband grapples with his changing role from partner to caregiver. Her adult children each find ways to show their love and support while mourning the slow loss of their mother. And Pam deals with the fear that she will be institutionalised for her disease, as her own mother was before she died of Alzheimer’s in 2001. The Genius of Marian is a visually rich, emotionally complex story that not only chronicles the progress of Pam’s earlyonset Alzheimer’s, but also serves as a meditation on what we inherit from the generations before us and the role of memory in creating legacy.

GOOD PITCH At Good Pitch New York 2012, Banker and Anna were looking for partners to support their outreach campaign – the creation of a curriculum for medical professionals, additional short films and an art show that focuses on the healing power of creativity. They were also seeking finishing funds for the documentary. On Good Pitch day, the Sundance Institute announced the acceptance of the film onto its prestigious Edit Lab. The Fledgling Fund made an on-the-spot $10k grant – outside their regular granting cycle – and since then have given another two grants and introduced them to additional funding partners to support the film’s campaigning work. The team also received grants from Influence Film Foundation, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program and US broadcaster POV, raising a total of $193,000. Director/Producer Banker White Producer/Co-director Anna Fitch

The team developed partnerships with almost everyone at their table, including the Alzheimer’s Association NYC Chapter who provide free information, confidential

assistance and support for those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as for their family members, caregivers and professionals. The Alzheimer’s Association NYC Chapter helped to co-write the film’s discussion guide. Nonprofit organisation Arts & Minds is committed to improving quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias through engagement with art. President of the organisation, Dr James Noble, worked with the team to develop a specialised curriculum sensitising neurology students to the needs of Alzheimer’s patients and their families outside the clinical environment. Dr Noble also plans to present the film and curriculum at upcoming major neurology conferences. The team has now begun discussions with other departments at Columbia University: the Mailman School of Public Health, the Aging Center and the Department of Narrative Medicine. The Center for Creative Aging, a national clearinghouse at the nexus of creativity and ageing, has included the film and its campaign in their Family Caregiver online toolkit. MOMA Alzheimer’s Project, a special initiative in the Museum’s Department of Education from 2007 until 2014, showed the film and connected the team to other NYC contacts. At Good Pitch, the team also connected with advisor David Shenk (author of The Forgetting) and impact strategist Nancy Mench Turret who provided invaluable advice for the development of the campaign The Genius Of Caring.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? After the film’s Tribeca Film Festival 2013 world premiere, it travelled the world and picked up many awards. It was broadcast on POV in September 2014, and secured international and educational distribution with Ro*co Films. The team launched a robust community

engagement campaign and public art project called The Genius of Caring (www.geniusofcaring.com), comprising an innovative online story-sharing initiative and an educational curriculum geared to engage caregivers, educators, medical professionals and students in the subject of aging and caregiving intensive diseases. In autumn 2014 they were also commissioned by the New York Times to produce an Op Doc entitled A Marriage to Remember. The short film focuses on how Alzheimer’s affected Banker’s parent’s marriage. They are currently working to cast additional portraits for The Genius of Caring site, to plan community-based, inperson workshops and to launch a Spanish language version of the site. The project has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Family Caregiver Alliance, private donors and was selected to participate in the Sundance Institute New Frontier Story Lab. In addition to over 250 community screenings in January it was screened for lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Additionally, the team worked with the National Alzheimer’s Advisory Council and the Gateway Geriatric Education Center at Saint Louis University to have the film CME accredited in multiple disciplines including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and physical therapists. The Genius of Marian was released digitally in 2015 through Sundance Artist Services. It is now available on iTunes and Amazon and will be on Netflix in early 2016. “Banker White has lovingly captured a family portrait tragically framed by Alzheimer disease. This cinematographic masterwork inspires its audience, including physicians, caregivers, and families, to consider what providing care really means, from the home to the clinic office and all parts of life in-between— the painful and the beautiful.” James Noble, MD, President of Arts & Minds & Neurologist at Columbia University Medical Center

THE HOMESTRETCH KIRSTEN KELLY & ANNE DE MARE

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM

Pitch marked the beginning of serious discussions.

The Homestretch follows three homeless teens as they fight to stay in school, graduate, and build a future. Each of these ambitious teenagers – Roque, Kasey and Anthony – will surprise, inspire, and challenge audiences to rethink stereotypes of homelessness as they work to complete their education while facing the trauma of being alone and abandoned at an early age. As their stories unfold, the film connects us deeply with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care, and LGBTQ rights.

The team formed a relationship with CPB, who attended specifically for The Homestretch presentation. The film is now part of the CPB’s American Graduate Initiative, which supported the broadcast with paid advertising, and educational and outreach support.

GOOD PITCH Filmmakers Kirsten and Anne presented The Homestretch at Good Pitch Chicago in 2013 where they secured funding totaling over $147,000 from a range of funders including Chicago Community Trust, Lefkofsky Family Foundation, Baskin Family Foundation, Vicki and Bruce Heyman Fund, Mullen Family Foundation, Chaz & Roger Ebert Foundation, and Andrew Schwerfeger, who became an Executive Producer. These funds were critical to the film’s completion and provided vital support for the project’s ambitious and multi-layered impact campaign. Additional grants came in over the following year from the Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund and the Fledgling Fund.

The team had existing relationships with almost all of the organisations at their pitch table, most notably three of their national partners The National Network for Youth, The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth and the True Colors Fund. Being together at Good Pitch, and having them witness the tremendous response to the film significantly deepened these relationships and they remain an instrumental part of the national impact campaign. After discussions following Good Pitch, ITVS made an offer for funding and broadcast on Independent Lens. Though the film was already on ITVS’s radar, Good

After Good Pitch, the team forged an important working partnership with the Lefkofsky Family Foundation to produce an educational module for Chicago Public Schools Homeless Liaison Training. This module is now used in school systems nationwide, and is an integral part of PBS Learning Media.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? The Homestretch premiered at HotDocs and went on to play at 21 film festivals internationally. A theatrical release in US cities with the highest rates of youth homelessness coincided with National Homeless Youth Awareness Month in November, 2014. The national PBS broadcast of The Homestretch on Independent Lens in spring 2015 reached approximately 1 million viewers. It was included in ITVS’s acclaimed Community Cinema program at 80+ live events. ITVS and The Homestretch team developed a Discussion Guide and a Youth Call To Action Guide. Since Good Pitch, strategic impact funding has helped to support 500+ targeted live events featuring the film, raising approximately $200,000 for US schools and community organisations. The Homestretch continues to work closely with public schools, local government, universities, and service providers around the country. In spring 2015, The Campaign partnered with the US Department of Health

59

and Human Services to produce an unprecedented Federal Interagency Policy Screening and Discussion in Washington DC. This event brought together, for the first time ever, senior officials from the five top government agencies whose work intersects with homeless youth for a candid discussion. Thanks to the success of that event – and a second grant from the Fledgling Fund – ten regional screenings and roundtable discussions on the same model are being organised across the nation. In November 2015 the film will screen simultaneously at interagency policy events in Boston, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle, welcoming 1,000 policy, program and advocate participants from across the country. The team continues to raise funds to execute this innovative outreach. To amplify the impact, the team will use ITVS’s online streaming platform (OVEE) to connect the conversations with remote agency offices and nonprofit grantees. The ultimate goal is to open channels of communication between previously siloed agencies, and generate support for homeless youth. The Homestretch Impact Campaign is gaining momentum for a second year of screenings, community events and work with school districts during 2015-16. Currently, the team is producing a short follow up film on a Chicago Public High School that is responding to the crisis of homeless youth with an innovative, pilot program that will house under-housed students at the school. In 2015-16, the film will screen as part of the White House Initiative for Excellence in Education for African Americans Discussion Series in October. It’s also been invited to be part of the US State Department’s American Film Showcase and will be working with embassies across the world.

IDA’S DIARY

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM

AUGUST BAUGSTØ HANSSEN & CARSTEN AANONSEN

Ida is a young Norwegian woman, struggling with a very turbulent emotional life caused by an emotionally unstable personality disorder (borderline / BPD). For the last eight years, Ida has kept a video diary in order to ease her mind and structure her thoughts. In her diary we get a unique insight into a world of fear and anxiety, but also precious moments of everyday victories and self-discovery. Most importantly we get to witness her powerful struggle towards self-acceptance and a genuine appreciation of life. Ida’s Diary is a film about hope, about finding your own identity and daring to live.

GOOD PITCH At Good Pitch Europe 2013 in London, filmmakers August and Carsten and Impact Producer Karianne were looking for funding for both the film’s production and the impact campaign, as well as strong campaign partners who could help them reach targeted audiences. On the day, the team met with a range of potential partners including the European Federation of Nurses Association, World Association of Girl Scouts, Mindfull, MTV Voices, Dazed & Confused and FilmClub UK. Mental Health Europe, an umbrella organisation representing 88 members organisations and European institutions active in the field of mental health and well-being, sat at the Good Pitch table and together they are now looking into the possibility of a screening at the European Parliament.

Also at their table were the Wellcome Trust and long-time supporter of the film, Fritt Ord Foundation. After the pitch, both foundations pledged financial support for the completion of the film.

61

Through Good Pitch, the team also connected to Kat Mansoor who came on board as co-producer of the film and secured support from Wellcome Trust, which is a global charitable foundation supporting research for health. Through Kat the filmmakers connected with Jessica Edwards who joined the team as the Impact Producer for the UK campaign. Jessica secured funding from the Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund. Together, Kat and Jessica raised a total of nearly $68,000 to help complete the film and launch its impact campaign in the UK. Meanwhile, Fritt Ord Foundation gave another grant to the filmmakers for its impact campaign in Norway. Good Pitch helped the film project grow and gain international interest. The team believes that Good Pitch enabled them to deliver a strong pitch at the IDFA Forum Round Table Pitch in November 2013, which led to sales to broadcasters NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and SVT (Sweden) whilst also sparking serious conversations with the BBC (UK) and other interested parties. Sales to the four Nordic broadcasters led to support from the Nordic Film & TV Fund. Pitching at the the IDFA Forum also led to the international premiere at IDFA in 2014, securing sales agent First Hand Films and Belgium broadcaster VRT.

the film was Highly Commended in Best Feature Documentary at the International Film Competition. The team is currently preparing for the launch of their strategic impact campaign in different countries, which will be launched together with the film’s broadcast in the Nordic countries on World Mental Health Day on October 10th 2015. Two highlights include a screening in London for policymakers, influencers and mental health professionals, hosted by Emergence, as well as a screening with HORATIO at the European Association for Psychiatric Nurses Annual Congress in Lisbon. In addition, as a result of the Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund grant, Emergence – a leading mental health organisation with a focus on borderline personality disorder – has been engaged to deliver an innovative training programme for mental health professionals around the film. Emergence has an extensive track record of designing and delivering contextspecific training for mental health practitioners and service users affected by BPD and is the main delivery partner of the Department of Health’s education programme supporting individuals with personality disorder, which has been delivered to approximately 70,000 individuals in the UK since 2008.

THE IMPACT CAMPAIGN AIMS TO RAISE MUCH NEEDED AWARENESS OF PERSONALITY DISORDER AND MENTAL HEALTH.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Ida’s Diary had its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA) in November 2014 followed by screenings at more than a dozen festivals worldwide, including the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, the biggest of its kind, where

The Ida’s Diary impact campaign aims to raise much needed awareness of personality disorder and mental health, more generally, challenging the stigma with which they are associated, targeting a range of audiences. They specifically look to share the film with mental health professionals, service users and the general public.

THE NEW BLACK YORUBA RICHEN & YVONNE WELBON

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM The New Black captures the complex intersection between faith, racial justice and LGBT rights. With a focus on the campaigns for and against Maryland’s 2012 Question 6 ballot initiative, the film offers perspectives from both sides of the debate, while interweaving perspectives of everyday people grappling with their stance on the issues. Bolstered by an overarching analysis of the historic role of the church as both a support system for black people, families and communities as well as a bastion of homophobic rhetoric, the film prompts viewers to confront the unique challenges facing black LGBT people in the United States. Moreover, it leaves us with a new understanding of inclusive democracy.

GOOD PITCH Filmmakers Yoruba and Yvonne presented The New Black at Good Pitch New York 2012, seeking production funding and partnerships to support the film’s message. In addition to a $150,000 production grant, Ford Foundation’s JustFilms Initiative also funded two brain trusts with key stakeholders in New York and Washington DC in partnership with Active Voice, who helped to develop the outreach and engagement campaign. The Ford Foundation’s Gender Rights and Equality initiative awarded $50,000 to support outreach and engagement. Also in the room was the Philadelphia Foundation, who later gave $15,000 towards the campaign, and the Fledgling Fund, who gave a $20,000 grant.

and been screened for audiences at over 100 colleges, universities, community groups and corporations. It has been previewed, reviewed, discussed and blogged about in 350 broadcast, online and print publications including The Washington Post, The Village Voice, Huffington Post, MSNBC, and NPR. Additionally, Yoruba Richen’s TED talk, ‘What the gay rights movement learned from the Civil Rights Movement’ has been viewed by more than 619,000 people. Leading up to the film’s 2014 PBS broadcast, The New Black screened in more than 85 cities around the country through ITVS’s Community Cinema public education and civic engagement initiative. These free, community-based screenings were hosted in collaboration with the film’s community partners, including National Black Programming Consortium, GayStraight Alliance, local PBS broadcasters, and Spectrum Queer Media. The targeted engagement for 2014-15 has focused on two primary areas the Empowering Equality Faith-Initiative and the Empowering Equality on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) program.

to support active engagement of congregational audiences and institutions. Through the formation of national partnerships and with support of the advisory group, The New Black was screened within several major congregations and with targeted faith-led audiences. The goal of the screenings was to make use of The New Black as an innovative practical tool to support congregations and faith-oriented spaces in responding to the religious, social, and cultural shifts required for the integration of same-sex marriage legislation. Empowering Equality on Historically Black College and University Campuses Though foundational to the Civil Rights Movement, HBCUs have been notoriously conservative when it comes to LGBT issues. The New Black, in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), awarded $6,000 in grants to HBCUs to use The New Black as a tool to advance on-campus LGBT inclusion through expanded and improved policy development, campus climate, and education.

THE NEW BLACK CAPTURES THE COMPLEX INTERSECTION BETWEEN FAITH, RACIAL JUSTICE AND LGBT RIGHTS.

Empowering Equality Faith-Initiative During 2014, a series of conversations were held with a cross-sector of clergy, lay ministers, same gender loving ministry (SGL) leadership, theologians, scholars, and subject matter experts from around the country. As a result of these initial conversations, an advisory group, including major partnerships with Many Voices and The Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice (CARSS), was formed

Seven schools in five southern states were selected to receive the first round of funding for events during fall 2014 and spring 2015.

Two years after film’s premiere and after the legalisation of gay marriage nationally, The New Black continues to be used in corporate, community-based organisations, college and universities, human rights organisations, policy, and advocacy settings as a catalyst for discussion expanding diversity and inclusion social change efforts.

PRIVATE VIOLENCE CYNTHIA HILL & KIT GRUELLE

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM Private Violence is a feature-length documentary film and audience engagement campaign that explores a simple, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. Through the eyes of two survivors – Deanna Walters, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband, and Kit Gruelle, an advocate who seeks justice for all women – we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. Their experiences challenge entrenched and misleading assumptions, providing a lens into a world that is largely invisible; a world we have locked behind closed doors with our silence, our laws, and our lack of understanding. As Deanna transforms from victim to survivor, Private Violence begins to shape powerful, new questions that hold the potential to change our society: “Why does he abuse?” “Why do we turn away?” “How do we begin to build a future without domestic violence?”

GOOD PITCH Cynthia and Kit presented Private Violence at Good Pitch Chicago in 2013 where they secured nearly $45,000 in production funds from a range of individual donors as well as The Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention and Chicken & Egg Pictures. Director Cynthia Hill Social Impact Campaign Consultant Kit Gruelle

The Waitt Institute sat at the Good Pitch table and became one of Private Violence’s main campaign partners. The

65

Institute is committed to breaking the cycle of violence in homes, schools, and communities through research, national multi-platform campaigns, and through the power of film. Waitt has been a key partner in the social media strategy, amplifying their voice and playing an active role in the conversation to #EndPrivateViolence. They have supported the production, funding, and coordination of three documentary shorts aimed at ‘first responder’ communities. These shorts are targeted toward bringing more men into the movement, sensitising lawyers to the issues around domestic violence (to be distributed to the 400K+ members of the American Bar Association), and educating the wider public about the patriarchal roots behind the seemingly-benign question: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Chicken & Egg Pictures, a film fund supporting women nonfiction filmmakers to catalyse social change, also sat at the Good Pitch table. They joined the team as executive producers of Private Violence and provided key funding for our social impact campaign. Their biggest non-monetary contribution was in the development of their tear sheet survey, in collaboration with another key partner, the Fledgling Fund. This survey was created to measure immediate audience response to the film.

a first-of-its kind endeavour in the social impact space and one that all filmmakers can use to measure their impact.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Private Violence had its world premiere at Sundance International Film Festival in 2014. It had a robust festival run and garnered many awards including the Candescent Award and the True/False ‘True Life’ Award. The film premiered to broad acclaim on HBO in October 2014 during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the lead up to the film’s broadcast premiere and following, Private Violence screened in over 110 cities across the US and around the world. It has been nominated for an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Informational Programming Long-Form category (awards to be announced in September 2015). The team is currently working on visualising their impact story as part of their involvement in the first ever Fledgling Fund Engagement Lab. Their hope is that this new, visually-driven way of presenting a film’s social impact will aid filmmakers and the newly burgeoning field of social impact in the same way that their tear sheet has. This visual story contextualises their impact within the larger culture and social movements. It maps how they have leveraged our role in the public eye to bring domestic violence-related issues to the forefront, galvanized states to pass stronger DV legislation, helped to both amplify the voices and efforts of both established and still nascent movements, and changed the public conversation around domestic violence. Through their partnerships, they have supported a community of advocates, activists, and survivors working to #EndPrivateViolence.

“WHY DOES HE ABUSE?” “WHY DO WE TURN AWAY?” “HOW DO WE BEGIN TO BUILD A FUTURE WITHOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?”

The survey helped the team to determine important data about their audience and their impact. For example, much of the audience (75%) asked the question “why didn’t she just leave” in domestic violence situations. 94% of the audiences surveyed understood more about DV after watching the film. While similar tear surveys have been used by film festivals to determine awardwinners, their measurement tool was

A powerful combination of investigative journalism and environmental documentary, Virunga is the incredible true story of a group of brave people risking their lives to build a better future in a part of Africa the world’s forgotten and a gripping exposé of the realities of life in the Congo.

Also on their Good Pitch New York table was the Fledgling Fund, who offered $30,000 towards the campaign. Fledgling connected the team to a small private foundation, the Neda Nobari Foundation, who soon after came on board as a campaign supporter. The filmmakers also spoke with advocacy organisation Friends of the Congo and Africa Faith and Justice Network to arrange diaspora outreach with the film and its campaign.

In the forested depths of eastern Congo lies Virunga National Park, one of the most bio-diverse places on earth and home to the planet’s last remaining mountain gorillas. In this wild, but enchanted environment, a small and embattled team of park rangers protect this UNESCO world heritage site from armed militia, poachers and the dark forces struggling to control Congo’s rich natural resources. When the newly formed M23 rebel group declares war, a new conflict threatens the lives and stability of everyone and everything they’ve worked so hard to protect, with the filmmakers and the film’s participants caught in the crossfire.

17 NOT REQUIRED INDIANS SONIYA KIRPALANI

Good Pitch Review

THE FILM In April 2010, 17 Indians were sentenced to death for the murder of one man in the UAE. But for the efforts of some family members pressurising both the Indian and the UAE governments for a fair trial, the men would have ended their lives as statistics. In sharing time with the families struggling for justice, director Soniya Kirpalani reveals the tragic plight of Indian migrants overseas. Following the brothers of one of the accused, as they collect proof of his innocence, we are lead into an unseen world of migrant abuse. Through the trial process, we see how politics and corruption obstruct the possibility of a fair trial for Indian migrant workers. As well as securing justice for the 17 men, the team’s goal is to affect longterm change in the treatment of Indian migrant workers as a whole, and to shift the mindset of the Indian community in the UAE specifically.

GOOD PITCH Soniya presented her project at two Good Pitch events. After her New York 2011 pitch, the Bertha Foundation gave her a production grant and a further completion grant through the Bertha BRITDOC Journalism Fund, totaling nearly $75,000.

Director Soniya Kirpalani

At her New York table were Humanity United, Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, Chicken & Egg Pictures, Amnesty International, broadcasters ITVS and ArteEast, WITNESS, Cinereach and Breakthrough TV, all of whom Soniya built strong partnerships with. Video Volunteers spoke from the floor and pledged support in getting the film to the villages where the migrants live in India. Upon returning from Good Pitch NY, Soniya hosted media junkets with the

17 families and human rights activists within UAE/India, creating pressure on both governments to open the appeal process, and generating nearly $600,000 in media mileage and financial support for the families. At Good Pitch2 India 2014 Soniya was seeking regional partners. Amnesty International (AI) India offered their expertise and access to their membership so the film could be used to start a discussion around governance with local ministers and in the Indian parliament. AI also hosted grassroots screenings across the most marginalised areas across India, with the highest rates of migration, to raise awareness about illegal employment. Through Good Pitch Soniya met Trust Law, Thomson Reuters Foundation’s global pro bono service connecting NGOs and social enterprises with law firms around the world. This partnership has opened the discussion on governance, resources and large-scale change in India, and beyond. Soniya is now collaborating with Trust Law to translate employment contracts so they can be put online for prospective migrants. On Good Pitch2 day, $2,500 was raised to start a helpline for Non Resident Indians in trouble abroad. With the change in government, Soniya worked with Amnesty International, campaigning influencers and media, raising the topic of migrant safety in the Indian Parliament through supporters. This has resulted in new changes in Migrant Policy and Protection announced by President Modi.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Through the release of a series of clips online after Good Pitch New York, Soniya secured media partnerships to ensure the case maintained maximum media attention with regional communities. Soniya secured permissions for the brothers of the 17 accused to meet

69

with them in prison. She also assisted the defense teams in getting the employment documents which proved that at least some of the men were innocent. Soniya gained access to labor camps for the defense team where they were able to speak with eyewitnesses and conduct due diligence on the case. After the trial, Soniya continued to support the men, helping them retrieve their passports and identification papers, and she also supported their learning through a program teaching basic computer and marketing skills. Working towards their larger goal of improving the conditions for all Indian migrants, the team invited Human Rights India to Dubai. In collaboration, they discovered that more than 1,730 Indians were imprisoned in the UAE, of which almost 200 were on death row. Soniya continues to work with Amnesty International to secure the lives of Indians overseas. She supported AI in their drive to get funding in the UAE from high net worth individuals. Now they are organising community screenings in highly sensitive areas of the UAE and she has helped them find a regional representative to lead this work on the ground. Press junkets raised awareness in the UAE-based Indian community; there have been several new initiatives launched by the youth in the community to create education, opportunities and give hope to the UAE-based migrant workers. Soniya feels she is close to achieving most of the goals that she set for herself at Good Pitch. What proved to be a blessing was the change in ministry. After Prime Minister Modi took to power, Soniya continued to stir regional/global pressure with her regular community and influencer screenings supported by AI. This resulted in Modi announcing the new fund for legal support of migrant labourers in prison.

Joyous We love what we do and we want to work with people who feel the same way.

CARA MERTES Director, JustFilms

Cara Mertes is director of Ford Foundation’s JustFilms initiative, a global social justice effort that supports emerging and established film and digital artists whose work addresses the most pressing issues of our time. JustFilms also supports key organisations that explore and sustain the art of contemporary issue film and digital storytelling. The initiative seeks to expand networks and resources for the community of independent makers around the world, to increase their artistry and to maximise the impact of their stories. Throughout her two-decade career, Cara has championed the artist’s role in society and harnessed the power of independent filmmaking and experimental media to raise awareness of critical issues. Before joining the foundation in 2013, she was director of the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program and Fund for eight years. In that role, she expanded the annual portfolio of activities to include funding, labs and global partnerships, including over $2 million awarded annually to dozens of social issue films. She expanded Documentary Lab opportunities to serve more than 100 Sundance grantees each year, and was instrumental in creating a suite of international creative partnerships to increase impact and resources for the field, including the Skoll Foundation ‘Stories of Change’ partnership, the TED Prize Filmmaker Award, and as co-founder of BRITDOC’s Good Pitch initiative. Cara has accepted the ACLU Freedom of Expression Award and the International Documentary Association’s Pioneer Award for the Documentary Film Program’s efforts.

Good Pitch Review

Earlier, Cara was executive producer of the PBS POV documentary series. She also served as executive director of American Documentary Inc, produced and directed for PBS, curated Independent Focus for WNET/New York, and has taught and written about independent documentary and social change.

“For the 8th year, the Good Pitch model has outperformed our wildest expectations, with more events produced, stronger networks, better training for project teams and expanded resources coming to social justice film projects. With each evolution, the power of an approach based on creativity, compassion and courage shows us new pathways to success for our artists, their subjects and the greater communities that form around them.” Cara Mertes Ford Foundation

FORD FOUNDATION Fordfoundation.org The Ford Foundation supports visionary leaders and organisations on the frontlines of social change worldwide. Our goals for more than half a century have been to: • Strengthen democratic values • Reduce poverty and injustice • Promote international cooperation • Advance human achievement

We believe all people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential, contribute to society, and have voice in the decisions that affect them. We believe the best way to achieve these goals is to encourage initiatives by those living and working closest to where problems are located; to promote collaboration among the nonprofit, government and business sectors; and to ensure participation by men and women from diverse communities and all levels of society. In our experience, such activities help build common understanding, enhance excellence, enable people to improve their lives and reinforce their commitment to society. We work mainly by making grants or loans that build knowledge and strengthen organisations and networks. Since our financial resources are modest compared with societal needs, we focus on key problem areas and program strategies. Created with gifts and bequests by Edsel and Henry Ford, the foundation is an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental organisation, with its own board, and is entirely separate from the Ford Motor Company. The trustees of the foundation set policy and delegate authority to the president and senior staff for the foundation’s grant making and operations. Program officers in the United States, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America explore opportunities to pursue the foundation’s goals, formulate strategies and recommend proposals for funding.

TABITHA JACKSON Director, Documentary Film Program and Fund, Sundance Institute

Tabitha Jackson was appointed Director of the Documentary Film Program (DFP) at the Sundance Institute in late 2013. The DFP is dedicated to supporting nonfiction filmmakers worldwide in the production of cinematic documentaries that tell compelling stories, push the boundaries of the form, or address contemporary issues including social justice and human rights. In supporting such work, the DFP encourages the diverse exchange of ideas by artists as a critical pathway to developing an open society. Recent films supported by the DFP include CITIZENFOUR, Rich Hill, The Hunting Ground and The Look of Silence. With almost 25 years experience in the field, Jackson is an award-winning commissioning editor, director, and producer of nonfiction work. Prior to joining Sundance she most recently served as Head of Arts and Performance at Channel 4 Television in London, where she supported and championed the independent and alternative voice and sought to find fresh and innovative ways of storytelling. She also executive produced a number of projects for Film 4 including Mark Cousins’ cinematic odyssey The Story of Film, Clio Barnard’s hybrid The Arbor, Sophie Fiennes’ essay The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology, Bart Layton’s thriller The Imposter, and Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s Sundance-winning Nick Cave biography 20,000 Days on Earth.

“There’s bringing strategic support to films for change...and then there’s Good Pitch - a uniquely effective, and uniquely affecting experience which turns out to be way more than the sum of its already remarkable parts. Fuelled by a generosity of spirit, passion and community, for those of us invested in films really making a difference Good Pitch has become an unmissable event in the year and Sundance Institute is proud to be a partner.” Tabitha Jackson, Director, Sundance Documentary Film Program

SUNDANCE DOCUMENTARY FILM PROGRAM

facilitating the strategic distribution of grantee projects where needed, and supporting the social and creative impact of this work upon release.

The Sundance Documentary Film Program supports nonfiction filmmakers worldwide in the production of cinematic documentaries on contemporary themes. Established in 2002 with founding support from Open Society Foundations, the Program is a vibrant global resource for independent nonfiction storytelling.

In summary, the year-round support of filmmakers through the granting fund, the creative labs, a fellows program and strategic advice from development to distribution amounts to a commitment to documentary as an increasingly important global art form and a critical cultural practice in the 21st century.

Led by Tabitha Jackson, the Documentary Film Program believes that art changes the way we reach people. We focus on those values of Art, Reach and Change through encouraging excellence and experimentation in form; championing under-represented voices;
