St. Barbara Students Raise Money for School Our yearly barb-a-thon has been going on for over 30 years. The original barb-a-thon took place on a Saturday and the students would come back and participate in a designated activity on school grounds for one hour to raise money for our school. Over the years, barb-a-thon has taken on many different formats, but the idea of rasing money for the school continues.

Mr. Mike from GE came to the First Grade classroom at McClellan School on June 4th. He presented to the students awesome concepts about family, community, needs/wants, responsibility and business. The students really enjoyed him sharing his business expertise with them. They were cooperative, friendly, helpful and had a great time filling their “brains with knowledge”.

Charity Arcade & Craft Fair to Raise Funds for the Nepal Victims

A shopper and a seller, at Armour School, both help to raise fund for the Nepal Relief Fund. Armour student Sondra Hogan shares the results of the Charity Arcade & Craft Fair held at Armour School for the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund. Armour studentleaders organized and ran an extremely fun, safe and well-thought out fundraiser. Armours artists designed cardboard arcade games and upcycled jewelry during art class, after school and at home. 100% of the proceeds benefited the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund. And guess what? Armour Students raised $230 and they had a blast doing it! Fellow students and families supported this event by playing arcade games, winning prizes and buying beautiful handmade crafts. All the prizes they were either made by the students or were donated by the students themselves. The prizes however were not what drew the community together. The creations themselves brought joy to everyone but they also raised funds for the Nepal Earthquake victims. Shout out to all of the parents who participated in this event to help everything go smoothly and make it a safe and fun environment for everyone.

Melvin R. and Olga Bonilla, Valentine Club Staff Member. Ten year old Melvin R. received an Excellence Award in recognition of his volunteer service to the club. As a result, he earned and saved his ‘Valentine Bucks’ to spend at the Valentine Depot reward center to purchase a v-Tech InnoTab for his younger brother. Way to Go, Melvin!

The first phase of the Santa Lucia School's Enhancement Project has been completed. Through the generosity of Anthony and Ramona Mastroangelo, the owners of Superior Nut Company, beautiful, energy-efficient windows were installed on the front of the school building. Tony is a member of the newly formed Santa Lucia School Board of Specified Jurisdiction. Mr. Mastroangelo intends to continue the building project by adding outdoor planters, a flagpole and an electronic sign. Tony's kind donation will not only enhance the front view of the building but will provide the school with a more effective use of heating. Everyone at Santa Lucia thanks Mr. & Mrs. Mastroangelo for their kind donation.

More than 140 physicians from Illinois’ leading pediatric health organization, the Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP), announced their endorsement of the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Act. The HEAL Act invests in community prevention and Medicaid, through a small tax on sugary drinks. The group includes pediatric chairs from the state’s academic medical centers, researchers, medical school faculty, subspecialists, pediatricians in training, and primary care physicians who see the adverse health impacts of sugary drinks on patients and their families every day. Nearly one in three children in Illinois is overweight or obese. As Illinois faces a budget crisis, the HEAL Act can raise an estimated $600 million to prevent cuts in Medicaid and invest in healthier kids. “In our view, these revenues should be targeted to critical clinical prevention and treatment services in Medicaid for childhood obesity and oral health that would lower state spending on health care,” said Alejandro Clavier, a Co-Chair of ICAAP’s Health Care Advisory Group on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages. Additionally, funds raised from the HEAL Act should be invested in community prevention. These efforts would include, for example, improving access to affordable fruits and vegetables and providing kids more options for safe places to play so that all youth can be active and healthier. “The contribution of sugary drinks to obesity in children is now clearly established,” stated Goutham Rao, a Co-Chair of ICAAP’s Health Care Advisory Group on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages. Sufficient scientific evidence demonstrates that decreasing consumption of these drinks reduces the prevalence of childhood obesity and costly obesity-related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. Further, sugary drinks cause cavities, behavioral problems and the risk of poor bone health.

35th Annual Holy Name Society Yearly Mass and Assembly Members please join us for the 35th Annual Chicago Archdiocesan Holy Name Society Yearly Mass and Assembly on Friday, June 12th at 7PM. The Archdiocesan Holy Name Society tries to alternate this yearly event between the south side and the north side of Chicago. This year the mass will be held on the north side at St. John Brebeuf Church located at 8200 S. Harlem in Niles, IL. Plans are being made so the next year we can celebrate this Mass and Assembly on the south side of Chicago. We are hoping to have more than the usual 35 banners representing their respective parishes from the archdiocese. Members are requested to bring their families. ***** Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes for success. Dale Carnegie

MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
