James Braid is widely considered one of the finest golf course designers of all time. He was responsible for more than 250 courses throughout the British Isles, including 9 in North Wales, which now make up the North Wales James Braid Trail. Wherever you see this icon you know the course was designed by James Braid.

Aberdovey – a traditional links golf course set by Cardigan Bay at the mouth of the Dyfi estuary. The course offers many signature James Braid features, including the famous blind par 3, the ‘Cader’. Maesdu – is a parkland and links course, enjoying fine views of Snowdonia and Conwy, offering challenging play, with many water hazards.

James Braid

Porthmadog – with 18 holes combining heathland and natural links amongst the sand dunes of Tremadog Bay, is famous for its 14th. Called the Himalayas, a 378-yards par four drive over a huge natural bunker that hides the fairway from the tee. Wrexham – this 18 hole inland course was to be one of James Braid’s last designs and includes one of his most challenging holes. The 7th is a 458-yard par four, doglegged where the fairway follows the valley to an elevated green protected by a large bunker.

It’s often said that North Wales offers the best value green fees in Europe. What’s the catch? There isn’t one. You’ll sacrifice nothing in quality – North Wales is home to some world-class championship links courses, like Royal St David’s, Aberdovey, Conwy and Nefyn & District Golf Club, which has been compared to Pebble Beach in the USA. And some hidden gems that you’ll hope will stay that way.

North Wales has over 60 courses, many of them steeped in history. Consider aiming your opening tee-shot at Snowdon, the highest mountain in England & Wales. Play Llanymynech: a course that has 15 holes in Wales and 3 in England. Or just take in the views as you walk round.

Bangor St. Deiniol – a mature 18 hole championship standard course. Set on Bangor Mountain overlooking the historic cathedral city. Holyhead – a delightful heathland course with undulating fairways bounded by bracken, broom and heather. There are spectacular panoramic sea views from the elevated 10th tee, while the blind shots, small greens and elevation changes reflect the James Braid philosophy of challenging play. Pwllheli – an 18 hole offering breathtaking views in a stunning location. The course is unique in combining tree-lined parkland with links. Rhyl – a 9 hole, 18 tee course of traditional seaside links with large fairways but tight, well guarded greens. Old Colwyn – is a 9 hole meadowland course that’s full of character. The signature hole is the par three 7th.

15th hole, Royal St. David’s Golf Club

Played against the stunning backdrop of the mountains of Snowdonia this championship links course is widely regarded as one of the hardest par 69s in the world. It’s not hard to see why, when two holes rarely travel consecutively in the same direction – making club selection a problem even in the lightest of wind conditions. The 15th is possibly the finest bunkerless hole in the country. The greens are fast, firm and true as a result of best practice in turf management. Sink your final putt in the shadow of Harlech Castle. Then retire to the clubhouse for a welcome drink and reflect on why Ian Woosnam puts Royal St. David’s in his five best British golf courses. The Dormy is now available for bookings. There are 5 bedrooms, 3 twins and 2 single rooms, and 2 shared shower rooms. The rate per person includes a full Welsh breakfast. Lunch and dinner can be provided in the Clubhouse on request.

Think of Snowdonia and you’ll probably conjure up images of towering mountains, mythological tales and ancient castles. And it’s all true. Wherever you are in the area, it’s probably fair to say there’s an impressive view. Like the rugged rocky peaks and ancient woodlands of Snowdonia National Park. And the spectacular coastline of the Llŷn Peninsula that has carried the title of “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” for over 50 years. The golf courses live up to the surroundings.

Aberdovey is classic links with a contemporary attitude. This championship layout is in the top 100 UK courses and one of three top courses in Wales. It has seen a number of improvements over the years, and was the first course in Wales to use a ‘Turf Iron’. The greens are pretty special if the glowing testimonials from visitors and members are anything to go by. Set in an area of Special Scientific Interest, you’ll be accompanied by sea spray and the sound of crashing waves. This strategic links course calls for a variety of shots and infinite creativity. You’ll need every club in the bag – and probably more than one way to play them. Especially on the 12th, a par 3 with no bail-out area that’s one of the most inspirational holes in British golf. Porthmadog has been described as one of the most enjoyable tests of seaside golf on the British Isles. And it’s not hard to see why. The mixture of heathland and natural links weave menacingly through the sand dunes of Tremadog Bay, providing a real test of golf. Expect stunning vista views along the Llŷn Peninsula. The par four 12th calls for a drive over a small bay and a second shot to a plateau green, but it’s the ‘Himalayas’ that’s likely to stick in your memory. This 387 yard par four demands a drive over a huge natural bunker that hides the fairway from the tee. Which is no small challenge.

Like your golf as a game of two halves? Pwllheli combines gentle mature parkland and tree lined fairways with a true test of links golf. So it’s perfect for pin-point hitters and wayward golfers alike. First established as 9-holes along coarse links in 1900, another 9 holes were added a decade later by 5-times British Open Champion, James Braid. He probably got his feet wet too, as the Clubhouse is closer to the sea than any other in the UK. So, after putting in on the 18th, sink a few more in the bar and take in the stunning views of Cardigan Bay. snowdonia mountains & coast

Abersoch, also known as the ‘Newquay of Wales’, is famous for its surfing and watersports, as well as its Jazz and Wakestock festivals. With the Abersoch Golf Club, which now has a new clubhouse for you to enjoy at the end of your round, it’s a hidden golfing gem nestling behind the sand dunes. This 18 hole course has a mixture of both links and parkland with many testing holes and wonderful views overlooking Cardigan Bay and the Snowdonia mountain range. The signature 3rd hole par 3 with an elevated tee requires an accurate drive over both gorse and a water hazard to a sloping green where there’s a bunker waiting at the back. The original 9 holes were designed by Harry Vardon who was six times British Open Champion.

No wonder Clough Williams-Ellis chose to build the fantasy Italianate village of Portmeirion on the Snowdonia coast. We’ve the real thing, too. Like the famous medieval fortress at Caernarfon built by Edward I in 1283. And it’s more of the same wherever you go in Snowdonia. This slightly undulating course has been played in the past by both David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill. It has tree-lined fairways and is a gentle walk. But the views are dramatic. Mountains, the Isle of Anglesey and the Menai Straits can be seen from pretty much every hole. And it’s walking distance from medieval Caernarfon Castle – a World Heritage Site since 1986. The course was extended to 18 holes in 1981 and celebrated its Centenary in 2009. There is now also an new driving range waiting for you to warm up on.

Unspoilt beaches. Wetlands, farmland, great sea cliffs. Spectacular coastline within an officially designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”. The Isle of Anglesey is a unique part of North Wales. But as well as prehistoric sites and historic monuments, there’s also plenty of golfing heritage. Some of the earliest golf courses in Wales are to be found here. The Isle of Anglesey’s courses often put you perilously close to the Irish Sea, so conditions can be challenging. Not to mention bracing. But they’re always a pleasure – played out against a stunning backdrop of mountains and sea.

The most northerly in Wales, this is a thinking golfer’s course. The club motto is ‘Her Deg ar Hen Dir’, meaning ‘an honest challenge on ancient land’. Others simply call it ‘nature’s gift to golfers’. As you’re driving off to views of the Irish Sea, Snowdonia and even the Isle of Man on a clear day, you’ll understand why. You’ll meet the flat, the hilly, the dog-leg and the blind approach. Watch out for the gorse, it has no mercy – especially on the 17th. The 11th is a long roller-coaster of a hole which might tempt you into a high risk/high reward strategy. As no doubt the competitors discovered when Bull Bay hosted the Young Professionals Championship.

Anglesey Golf Club is in an important conservation area with an abundance of wildlife. So keep your eyes peeled – you never know when that search for a lost ball could reward you with something more. Because of its even nature, Anglesey is a fair test for golfers of all abilities. The par 3 at the 6th has a postage stamp green that’s always a challenge. Depending on the wind, you could need anything from a 9-iron to a fairway wood off the tee. But save your best for last – you’ll need it to stay on the fairway on the 18th. Look out for the planes and helicopters from RAF Valley on your backswing.

Looking at the scorecard, you could be fooled into thinking that Holyhead is a relatively tame and flat course. With no trees to act as a magnet for the wayward tee-shot. But the narrow and undulating fairways will test all golfers. And the gorse, heather and bracken can be ball eaters. The wind that whips in from the Irish Sea also means the course can change its character from day to day – or even hour to hour. Luckily there’s a welcoming Clubhouse at the end where you can sit back and soak up the coastal views. And if you’re going to visit us in 2012, as it’s our centenary the atmosphere will be celebratory to say the least.

Henllys Golf Club combines the best of the old with the best of the new. Founded in 1996, the course stands under the gaze of historic Henllys Hall – once the 13th century royal estate of the Princes of Gwynedd and a former monastery. Thankfully, rules of abstinence don’t still apply: you can enjoy a tipple and good food in the new Clubhouse. This mature parkland course makes superb use of the natural features, streams and ponds around it. And its elevated position rewards you with spectacular views of Snowdonia and the surrounding area.

Baron Hill is one of the oldest golf courses in the country, having been designed in the late 1880s by Sir Richard Williams Bulkeley. He clearly knew the value of the right setting – from its elevated position you see right down the Anglesey coast, with breathtaking panoramic views across the Menai Straits to Snowdonia. This mature course winds its way through a number of natural hazards including plenty of fairway gorse, so don’t take any shot for granted. 18 Coastal North Wales describes the stretch of coastline that runs from the Dee estuary in the East to Bangor in the West. With miles of sandy beaches, cliff top walks and bracing sea air. The mild coastal climate provides perfect conditions for year-round golf. True links courses hug the shore. Some, like Prestatyn, are so close to the sea that you could get your feet wet. Championship links courses like Conwy will test your golfing skills (and your nerves). Expect magnificent coastal views from the likes of Abergele, Maesdu and North Wales (Llandudno). All of our coastal courses are full of character – so they all offer a very different playing experience.

This is a true links course of championship standard, played out alongside the magnificent scenery of the North Wales Coast. Expect some tricky par 3s including the famously named ‘O.L.’ and ‘L.O.’ where a par will feel like a birdie. The 8th is a great links hole, especially when there’s a stiff breeze from the beach. This is also the club where a young Tony Jacklin had lessons during his summer holiday and reduced his handicap from 17 to 1.

Llandudno was originally going to be named Port Wrexham. The name ‘Llandudno’ is based on the name of Saint Tudno.

Prestatyn is ball-losing distance from the Irish Sea. It’s mostly flat, so it’s easy walking. However it’s also one of the longest 18 hole tracks in North Wales – measuring over 6,800 yards from the championship tees. So you might want to get your pedometer out. Established in 1905 along the rolling sands of Gronant dunes, one of the toughest holes is the dogleg 3rd, aptly named ‘Round the Bend’. Prevailing south-westerly winds regularly make an appearance at Prestatyn, so you’ll want to pack your low shots. Reward yourself with a drink in the Clubhouse in the knowledge that you’ve just played one of the most northerly courses in Wales. This is a winter gem for golf societies.

Conwy is a Championship Links course loved by tour professionals such as Sam Torrance, Costantino Rocca and Ian Woosnam as well as players of all levels. The only Welsh club to host an Open Final Qualifier event in 2006. Also hosted the Wales Ladies European Tour Event in 2010 and the European Seniors Tour event in Wales in 2007, 2008 and 2012. Golf Punk, who voted Conwy their Welsh course of the year in 2006, described it as having ‘a tightness of fairway that would have even Jim Furyk reaching for his hip flask.’ So pack one just in case. Conwy has the whole package: testing holes, lots of character, great facilities and a warm welcome.

Tan-y-Gopa Road, Abergele Conwy LL22 8DS 01745 824034 www.abergelegolf.co.uk

18

Abergele has seen quite a bit of change over the last 10 years. And all of it good. The course was redesigned in 2001 and new greens were introduced to USGA specification. The result is a great golfing experience all year round. The course is set in the parkland of Gwrych Castle with magnificent coastal views. The 18th is the signature hole, with a fairway that races down the hillside to a very tight gap, with big trees on one side and dense woodland on the other. Even the professional won’t advise on the wisest approach to this one.

This is a gently undulating parkland course, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s easy. Bunkers lie in wait to grab a headstrong ball and even the par 3s call for tough club selections. The 11th will probably test you the most – with a semi-blind tee shot over a ridge, bunkers on either side of the green and a pond on the right to boot. It all adds up to a great golfing experience, with equally great views to the Clwydian Range – an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rhuddlan is regularly chosen for County and National Championships. And they recently won an award from the Forestry Commission for planting 5,000 trees as part of their sustainability programme.

Golf can be a bit of a battle, but rarely does it get bloody. When the Vikings decided to pay a visit in the 11th Century, Maesdu (‘Black Field’) was the site of The Battle of Deganwy. But don’t worry; you’re likely to complete a round unscathed. The course is pleasantly undulating, with great views of Conwy Bay, the Great Orme and the mountains of Snowdonia. Add to that 18 varied holes across parkland and links, and you’ve got a great round of golf. The course was designed by Tom Jones and James Braid, who was also behind the King’s and Queen’s course at Gleneagles. And it’s where Ian Woosnam played in the Welsh Boys’ Championship in 1974.

Sailing. Sand. Sea air. Just some of the reasons to head for our coastline. The drive-on beach at Talacre is another. Home to Point of Ayr lighthouse, the oldest one in Wales. And at Llandudno you can ride the UK’s only cable-hauled tramway to the top of the Great Orme. Then ski down the other side. We’ve other great excuses, too. Like our history and culture. Plas Mawr in Conwy is the best surviving Elizabethan town house in Britain. Other things are cultured here. Like the landscaped gardens at Bodnant. Our wilder landscapes include watersport venues like Conwy and Prestatyn, where you can sail, jet ski, dive and fish. And, as you’d expect, we’ve a bounty of seafood, too. The North Wales Borderlands lie between Chester to the East and Snowdonia to the West. Which makes them rather handy for a break. It’s a short trip from England but a big change in atmosphere, culture and countryside. There are lots of enticing ‘come and play me’ golf courses here. The Borderlands has some of the finest parkland courses in Wales, with lush fairways set in rolling countryside. There’s plenty to test low handicappers as well as the more novice golfer. Like the Vale of Llangollen – the only inland course in North Wales to hold HSBC Gold status. You can play in two countries in one round at Llanymynech – it’s so close to the border that three of its holes are actually in England.

18 This parkland course is on a hill above the medieval market town of Denbigh, home to another of King Edward I’s infamous ‘ring of castles’. He must really have been worried about us Welsh. Set in rolling countryside and mature woodland, there are panoramic views down the Vale of Clwyd to the coast. The course isn’t overly long, so you won’t need your driver off every tee. But don’t think that makes it easy: your golfing skills will be tested to the limits, especially your accuracy. Experience a challenging and enjoyable round of golf on a superb parkland course and then relax in the friendly clubhouse and enjoy fine food and drink.

The Vale of Llangollen is the only inland course in North Wales to hold HSBC Gold status. It’s not hard to see why golfers from far and wide come to play this course. Lush fairways hug the fertile valley floor beside the River Dee. The greens are well manicured and there are many challenging holes, including the 9th ‘river hole’ which is regarded as one of the best in Welsh golf. At least it’s an easy walk, with spectacular views of the ancient Welsh hills along the way.

This club has changed site three times in the last 100 years. At their current location, lush, tree-lined fairways bend upwards to higher ground revealing panoramic views of the Dee Estuary, Cheshire Plains and the Clwydian Hills. The course is not too long, but don’t let that fool you. There is plenty to keep you on your toes. Like the short par 3 at the 6th, heavily protected by bunkers and gorse. If it’s windy, don’t look to the flag for help – the green is in a protected hollow. And talking about protected – the golf club has even produced its own environmental responsibility and wildlife booklet.

18

Old Padeswood has some of the most memorable opening and finishing holes in North Wales. The course is built on undulating verdant parkland, overlooked by the Clwydian Mountain range and Moel Famau. You’ll be celebrating yourself if you make it safely to the first green having avoided the fairway trees and out-of-bounds to the right and left. The course can stretch to nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees, so it offers a real championship standard challenge – and a number of holes where a par will feel like a birdie. You’ll probably use all of the clubs in your bag to negotiate the tricky greens, strategically placed bunkers and water hazards.

did you know? Wrexham Golf Club was founded in 1906 and has been on its current site since 1924. It ‘lost’ several holes during the War to make way for a nearby airfield, but was restored to 18 holes under the design team of Fred Hawtree in 1952. The course has a number of testing holes. You will want to pull out your best at the 7th – a demanding hole set in a curving valley with trees tight on the left. And a bunker at the front of the green that has a very big appetite. Wrexham is host to many national and international golfing events, including the British Ladies’ Home Internationals.

Near Llanymynech the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct built by Thomas Telford is now a World Heritage Site. He also built the A5 road, Menai Bridge and Conwy Suspension Bridge.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was a links course, even though it lies on a plateau 800 feet above sea level. It’s a course that almost defies traditional description. Holywell is full of classic links challenges in a unique heathland and moorland setting, with limestone quarries, water hazards and grass bunkers. On a clear day you’ll see the majesty of Snowdonia in the distance, but don’t let it distract you too much: the diversity and trickiness of the holes means it’s a testing round for even low handicappers. Holywell offers an invigorating game in the fresh air, with a few sheep as spectators.

MACCLESFIELD-based European Tour star Jamie Donaldson has been recognised for his superb form last season by receiving the Tour Professional of the Year title at the Golf Union of Wales Awards. He was presented with the award by Golf Union of Wales chairman of teams and performance Andy Ingram in a ceremony at Celtic Manor, the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. He follows in the footsteps of Wales World Cup colleague Rhys Davies, who won this award last year, and former Masters champion Ian Woosnam who was recognised in 2008. Donaldson is a product of the Welsh golfing system, winning the Welsh Amateur matchplay and strokeplay championships, a regular Wales international where he often partnered current Walker Cup captain Nigel Edwards. Born in Pontypridd, he now lives in Cheshire. He represented Great Britain and Ireland in the World Amateur Team of 2000 alongside current world number one Luke Donald and Paul Casey. He has won three times on the Challenge Tour, but it was last season he made even greater progress on the European Tour with eight top 10 finishes, eventually coming 38th in the Race to Dubai rankings. He forced his way into the top 100 of the World Rankings, played a starring role in the victorious GB&I team in the Seve Trophy and partnered Davies to eighth place at the World Cup in China. “It was a good year, just a few shots here and there away from being a very good year,” said Donaldson. “It is always great to receive an award

like this and certainly I had a lot of good times playing for Wales as an amateur coming up through the ranks. “Next year the target is to improve again and I would love to get into the Ryder Cup team. I know that will be difficult as I am outside the world’s top 50, but it is possible and I will certainly do my best to try and make it happen. “I had a taste of it at the Seve Trophy and really enjoyed being part of a team, it

was like in the amateur days,” he added. GUW’s Ingram was delighted to be able to present Donaldson with the award and he added: “Jamie is a credit to Welsh golf as he performs on the highest stage on the European Tour. “He has come through the ranks and was a successful amateur for Wales, but after turning pro was set back by a debilitating back injury. “He has battled back through hard

work and dedication, steadily improving his ranking in the last few years since getting back onto the European Tour in 2008, finishing 89th, 59th, 46th and then 38th this year. “The next stage is to add to his three wins on the Challenge Tour by winning on the European Tour – he has already been very close on several occasions so I am sure it is only a matter of time. Hopefully 2012 will be the year.”

NEW CAREER FOR HOPLEY JAMES Hopley has quit his job at Hazel Grove to pursue a coaching career. Hopley, an assistant at the club prior to his appointment as head professional following the retirement nine years ago of long-serving Malcolm Hill, said: “The members have been very supportive but it was time for new pastures. “I have a temporary arrangement at Adlington Golf Centre and I hope to find my own facility soon.” It was a big move for Hopley in more ways than one, having to find a new home after vacating a cottage at the Stockport club which is reserved for the pro. He has been succeeded by Oldham’s James Rowlands.

THE popular Winter Open at Shrigley Hall attracted top golfers from far and wide to enjoy a Team of Four Stableford event last month. The winning team, a real family affair, came from Hallamshire Golf Club, in Yorkshire and they included plus two handicapper Matt Fitzpatrick, who is a regular for the White Rose county side and an England U18 player. Fitzpatrick, who posted five birdies, was joined by his brother Alex and dad Russell, both five handicappers, and Malcolm Green to post a winning score of 83 Stableford points.
