8. Syllabus Information about current syllabus provisions for the individual subject elements is published on the Faculty of Humanities website under Uddannelser => Studieordninger => Global Urban Studies.

Part 4. Academic profile 9. Objectives of the Master’s elective The purpose of the Master’s elective in Global Urban Studies is to enhance the student’s academic knowledge and skills, and to further develop the theoretical and methodological competences gained during the Bachelor’s programme. The student gains greater independence and academic immersion through the advanced elements of the subject area’s disciplines and methods, including training in research work and methodology.

10. Competence profile for the Master’s elective Competence description Through research-based teaching, the student focuses on the study of urban societies throughout the world from a comparative and cross-cultural perspective. The student acquires knowledge of how cities shape and are shaped by people, and how cities and urban spaces are negotiated, organized, used, and ascribed cultural meaning. Through regional and cross-regional case studies, the student acquires thorough knowledge of connections between global and local processes. The student acquires business- and society-aimed competences in studying, analysing, and communicating phenomena and processes in the social, cultural, economic, and political lives of cities, as well as in being able to critically reflect on the dynamics of cities. By goal-oriented work with relevant concepts, theories, and methods from urban studies, the student will develop the ability to define and obtain an active role in the development of cities. The student develops competences in communicating, to the public, private, and third sectors, sustainable solutions to central issues and innovative ideas towards the fulfilment of a city’s potentials. The student will increase his/her capacity to independently conceive and present projects that make humanistic and interdisciplinary theories of the city operational within the three sectors. These competences are aimed at working in and with public institutions, international organizations, private businesses, independent institutions and NGOs engaged in development and change in cities. Training in idea- and project-development further qualifies the student to work with entrepreneurship and social innovation.

Competence objectives The Master’s elective in Global Urban Studies gives the following specific competences: Knowledge and understanding of  General social, cultural, and historical matters, phenomena, and processes in a globalized world of cities.  Central aspects of the social, economic, political, and cultural lives of cities.  Scholarly and methodical approaches to cultural and social analysis as applied in the study of cities within the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies.  Practical approaches to project activity, entrepreneurship, and innovation in networks, businesses, organizations, and institutions working with the city.
