Civil engineering Civil engineering is one of Cundall’s core services and covers all sectors of the construction industry. We help to create, improve and protect the environment in which we live and provide the facilities for day-to-day life and for transport and industry to function effectively. We aim to help you identify both the constraints placed on development by regulatory requirements and site conditions and the opportunities that can be created by practical and innovative design. We will work closely with the project team and stakeholders to ensure the project deliverables and goals are achieved or exceeded while providing sustainable solutions. Sustainable design Positioned at the forefront of sustainability in the built environment, Cundall takes a refreshingly positive approach to engineering design, fostering collaboration and creativity. The design includes a number of innovations that have added value, for example our geotechnical and structural engineers identifying a very cost effective foundation solution. BIM software was utilised to improve collaboration and integration with models being merged on a regular basis to check for coordination issues, including running clash detection analysis. The Palatine Centre achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating which met the University’s high sustainable aspirations.

Suzanne Cory High School, Melbourne, Australia

Client Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) Services Building services engineering and sustainable design Architect Brand Architecture

Suzanne Cory High School is one of two new selective entry schools in Melbourne. Cundall collaborated with Brand Architecture to create not only a building that reduced its impact on the environment but also demonstrated sustainable design in action. The 3-layer EFTE roof system, which covers the central agora of the building, dramatically alters daylight and heat gain by inflating and deflating its pillows to alter the shading effect provided by the roof. Passively tempered air is distributed via earth mounded thermal labyrinths, which provide up to 10oC cooling of outside air in summer and 8oC heating in winter.

This award-winning artificial white water canoe course is a major multi-disciplinary engineering project, and the centre hosted the Canoe Slalom competition during the London 2012 Olympics. The site accommodated up to 12,000 spectators in the temporary stands. The centre was designed with sustainability and legacy activities in mind. All of Cundall’s disciplines met the engineering challenges of designing this bespoke facility on a former landfill site. Since completing this project we have worked on the design for the white water canoe course at Rio 2016 and a further course in New Zealand.

Client Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation Services Sustainable design, BEAM and LEED consultant Architect Simon Kwan & Associates Awards 2012 Hong Kong Green Building Award: Building Project under Design Grand Award winner

Cundall was appointed as BEAM, LEED and sustainability consultant for Phase 3, aiming to achieve one of Hong Kong’s first LEED v2009 ‘Platinum’ ratings and a HK BEAM Plus ‘Platinum’ rating. The ‘Back to Basic’ design approach was adopted, incorporating cost effective and functional green building design concepts, stepping away from services over provision using passive devices and avoiding over-complicated systems. The development’s aim was to create a sustainable working environment, encouraging cultural change, with a ‘green education programme’ consisting of a guided tour including a smartphone app to showcase the building design, its features and its measured performance to influence visitors and tenants.

Careful integration into the building’s base build systems was efficiently delivered through the holistic use of BIM/3D Revit Modelling which resulted in a fully coordinated solution.

HASSELL Shanghai Studio, Shanghai, China

Client HASSELL Services Building services engineering, sustainable design and LEED consultant Architect HASSELL

The 2,300m2 studio breathes new life into a former light industrial warehouse. It integrates innovative and sustainable workplace design to create an energetic and creative new space accommodating a team of 150 with room to grow. A team of project managers and designers were formed to undertake this fit-out project for HASSELL’s new studio in Shanghai. Cundall was appointed as the building services (MEP), sustainability and LEED consultant for this project. The objective of the sustainable interior design seeks to harness the openness of the building and to maximise natural daylight, space and views. It utilises the use of the existing building structure and fabric to minimise the use of additional materials and to reduce construction waste. Bamboo is used extensively throughout the fit-out in place of timber, providing a sustainable building material as well as a strong cultural connection.
