The Organization The Social Progress Imperative’s vision is a world where social progress sits alongside economic prosperity as a measure of development. Since its founding in 2012, the Social Progress Imperative has produced the annual Social Progress Index as a global benchmark of countries’ social and environmental performance as a complement to GDP and other traditional economic measures of success. The original idea for the Index was conceived within the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Philanthropy and Social Investing, chaired by The Economist’s New York Bureau Chief Matthew Bishop, who took up the challenge in 2009 to increase the impact that social entrepreneurs, business leaders, and policy makers can have in the world. The Social Progress Imperative launched the Index at the 10th annual Skoll World Forum in 2013, held at the University of Oxford. The Index, which now covers 133 countries and was recently updated in June 2016, has established itself as a leading global measure of the extent to which countries provide for the non-economic needs of their citizens. The Index has been reported by The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, BBC, CNN, and hundreds of other media outlets in 100+ countries and 50+ languages. It has also been the basis of two TED Talks by Social Progress Imperative’s Executive Director, Michael Green, which have been viewed more than 2 million times. Michael Green was also recently named to the 2016 Power & Influencer Top 50 by the NonProfit Times. The Social Progress Imperative is supported by an Advisory Board chaired by Professor Michael E. Porter of Harvard Business School. The Social Progress Imperative is about much more than an index; it is building a partner network of organizations in government, business, and civil society that use the Index to drive change. The organization has built a mature network in Latin America, covering more than 10 countries. The Government of Paraguay has adopted the Index as a cornerstone of its national development plan to 2030. Its Latin American partners have also created a diverse range of Indexes, including for the Amazon region of Brazil and ten major cities in Colombia. The Social Progress Imperative has begun to expand in North America, where it has a number of local pilot projects in the United States, and Europe, where it has a partnership with the European Commission to create a Social Progress Index for the regions of the EU. Going forward, the Social Progress Imperative will be launching initiatives in Asia in the coming months and is exploring opportunities in Africa. The Social Progress Imperative is supported by a range of donors, including Fundación Avina, Skoll Foundation, and Deloitte, all of which are represented on its Board of Directors. Social Progress Imperative’s principal office in is Washington, D.C., with a presence in London as well. To learn more about the organization, please visit www.socialprogressimperative.org.

The Opportunity & Key Priorities Shifting the global debate about how best to define the success of societies is, fundamentally, a communications challenge. Following the breakthrough accomplishments of its first four years, the Social Progress Imperative is ambitiously pursuing efforts to scale its impact globally. To achieve this, the Social Progress Imperative and the Social Progress Index must be widely-known and trusted brands. Its communications must also support efforts to build a movement of social progress champions through Social Progress Imperative’s global network. The Global Director of Marketing & Communications is a newly established position and will be a visionary strategic communicator who will build on what the Social Progress Imperative has achieved already and take its message to a new level of impact. Beginning in 2017, the Social Progress Imperative will launch a strategic planning process to chart out its goals and objectives through 2020. In preparation for this, the new Director will immediately carry out a strategic review of Social Progress Imperative’s brand and marketing/communications activities to inform these planning discussions. The Director will also initiate the process to create a bold, cutting-edge approach to Social Progress Imperative’s marketing and communications function in order to promote the organization’s value and purpose. This includes developing and deploying clear messaging across digital and traditional channels about what the Social Progress Imperative is doing, achieving, and learning, and telling the story of how it is making a difference. The Director will be savvy in striking the right balance between creative freedom and innovation within these partner networks, while also setting a baseline for quality control and best practice.
