June 2016

Executive Summary

In 2015, total sales of professional aesthetic products covered in this report, including disposable components, exceeded $7.6 billion. Through 2020, they will expand by 11.0% per year to $12.8 billion. This is lower than the compound annual growth of 11.8% predicted in GAM XIII, released in early 2015 as forecasts were adjusted to reflect the ongoing global economic uncertainty. Growth will be driven by significant increases in the body shaping / skin tightening segment along with continued expansion of neurotoxins and dermal fillers. The energy-based devices and physiciandispensed topicals markets will also experience reasonable annual gains of 6.5% and 7.5%, respectively, as demand for these products results in increased sales.

In 2015, the leading companies profiled in this report accounted for total professional aesthetic product sales of about $5.5 billion, representing approximately 73% of the total market. Their sales will rise by 11.5% per year to reach more than $9.5 billion in 2020.

In 2015, total global procedure volume reached 59 million treatments with compound annual growth of 6.3% anticipated through 2020. Procedure volume growth will be greatest in the body shaping / skin tightening, neurotoxin and dermal filler sectors. On a global basis, procedure volume will grow most strongly in Asia and Latin America. In 2015, total global procedure fees were about $26 billion, with compound annual growth predicted of 5.4% through 2020. As with procedure volume, procedure fee growth will be greatest in the body shaping / skin tightening, neurotoxin and dermal filler sectors. On a global basis, procedure fees will grow most strongly in Asia and Latin America.

The aesthetic market was notable in 2015 and 2016 for the continuing consolidation of companies and changing regulatory environment with the U.S. Department of Treasury curbing U.S. company inversions to domiciles with more favorable tax laws. Most notable was the successful acquisition and inversion of Allergan by Actavis (the consolidated company is named Allergan), and the subsequent potential merger with Pfizer that was called off after the U.S. Treasury intervened.

The aesthetic market continues to be of interest for both pharma and consumer companies wanting to diversify into a sector that is showing strong growth, is highly profitable and has characteristics of both a consumer packaged goods and traditional pharmaceutical model. This is exemplified by Almirall, a Spanish based pharma company that has entered the aesthetic market by

acquiring Thermi (energy-based body shaping and skin tightening) and also partnering with Suneva (dermal filler). Also notable is the topical skincare market where companies such as Unilever, which acquired various skincare brands in 2015, namely REN, Murad, Dermalogica and Kate Somerville Skincare to add to their portfolio of other skincare brands. Unilever Ventures also has a joint venture with Syneron, namely iLuminage Beauty, which is developing products for the home-use market.

The acquisition of technologies continues such as with the purchase of both Kythera and Anterios by Allergan, and the forming of new beneficial collaborations such as Galderma and ZELTIQ. The acquisition of Kythera gave Allergan, Kybella which is the first-of-its-kind body sculpting injectable that treats submental fat, while Anterios gave Allergan a new platform to deliver botulinum toxins topically for indications such as crow's feet lines and hyperhidrosis. Galderma and ZELTIQ are collaborating to promote their respective injectable portfolio and CoolScupting brands and connecting these through ASPIRE, a patient and physician loyalty program.

Energy-based device companies are also improving technologies and introducing new treatment modalities that are expanding indications. These include new body sculpting devices such as Sculpsure from Cynosure, which is the first FDA approved laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis of the flanks and abdomen and the introduction of a number of new devices for feminine rejuvenation / women’s health, which potentially could become a large market segment in itself with brands such as Viveve from Viveve, Inc., MonaLisa Touch from DEKA / Cynosure and ThermiVa from Thermi. The aesthetic market is also being enhanced with the introduction of new business models such as service companies like RegimenMD that has introduced a new distribution channel for professional skincare products designed to help physicians maintain a professional relationship with their patients by supplying products directly to the physician’s patients. To date 20 major manufacturers are partnering with RegimenMD including SkinMedica, NeoStrata, Jan Marini, Skinceuticals, MDRejuvena and Nuvesse Skin Therapies.

Along with these various successes have been challenges as exhibited with the breast implant market where Silimed (distributed by Sientra in the U.S.) withdrew its implants from the market to resolve manufacturing issues. This was further compounded with a fire that will impact the supply of Silimed implants globally for an unspecified time while production is restored.
