From the Chaplain: Mention the month of November and the first association that comes to mind for many of us is Thanksgiving Day. And I would guess that the single most prevalent image we possess of that holiday is probably one of being with family and friends gathered around a table filled with delicious food and giving thanks to God for all of his gifts.

It is certainly good to have a day such as Thanksgiving Day where – throughout our country – we pause to express our gratitude to God from whom all blessings flow. At the same time, pondering the meaning of Thanksgiving Day can also serve as a reminder for the Christian that being grateful to God is not meant to be only an annual occurrence. As a matter of fact, it is not even just reserved for once daily. Rather, it should be a constant attitude.

Thanksgiving

is a good thing; St. Paul shows exactly what I’m getting at in several of his letters. In Ephesians thanks-living is a better. 5:18-20 he writes: “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled

with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” (NRSV) In Philippians 4:4-6 he tells us: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (NRSV) And in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul writes: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (NRSV) It is obvious from these quotations, that Paul did not think of being grateful to God as just an occasional observance. For him it was a way of life.

And when he said to be thankful “at all times and for everything” and “in all circum-

stances,” he meant it. Judging by some of the autobiographical experiences he reports, Paul - if he had been so inclined - could have easily become a very bitter, cynical individual. In 2 Corinthians 11 he gives an almost incredi-ble recital of the hard times he has been through because of his faithful proclamation of the Gospel. He speaks of labors, imprisonments, floggings, beatings, shipwrecks, exposure to the elements, dangers from Jews and Gentiles, and anxiety for all the churches. Nonetheless, as we read his letters, it becomes apparent that for him the joy of knowing Christ superseded all hardships and frustrations. When we understand this, we can also begin to comprehend how it was that Paul could exude such an “attitude of gratitude” toward God as he did.

H

owever, you are able to celebrate it, I hope all of you have a very happy Thanksgiving Day when that rolls around on November 27. But let us not stop there. Let that attitude of thankfulness – as much as possible – permeate not just one day, but every day. May it be a part of our words and our actions. For, as the seventeenth century clergyman, Philip Henry, noted: “Thanksgiving is a good thing; thanks-living is a better.”

In Christ,

Pastor Art Sonnenberg, Chaplain 2

BIRTHDAYS Green Tip There is 1 drop of mercury in every florescent bulb. Please be extra careful not to break these bulbs when replacing them. 1 drop of mercury contaminates 1 ACRE of water. Contact your local waste disposal company for information on how to dispose of these bulbs in a “green” manner as each company has a different protocol. Frey residents may give bulbs to maintenance personnel for appropriate disposal.
