Boone County GIS

The Boone County Planning Commission began its Geographic Information System (GIS) in 1993. As of the printing of this document, this GIS services more than 800 staff members employed by public sector entities that operate within Boone County. The Boone County Planning Commission’s GIS is a vital tool for these entities, providing valuable insight into Boone County. Having so many entities utilize the same system creates a foundation for these entities to communicate, collaborate, coordinate and cooperate on a multitude of initiatives. The residents and businesses of Boone County benefit in many ways from the existence of the GIS. One benefit that is often taken for granted is simply the enabling of decision makers employed by these public sector entities to make more informed decisions. It is often said that “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Nowhere is this sentiment truer than in how Geographic Information Systems are applied within local government in Boone County, Kentucky.

This document provides details about all of the GIS data layers in use by Boone County’s GIS program. Boone County’s GIS exists to support the diverse mapping needs of more than thirty agencies that operate within Boone County. Those who participate with the Boone County GIS partnership use these layers to help with a wide array of activities. Access to certain layers may be limited if they are deemed sensitive by the Boone County GIS Advisory Board. Likewise, other layers may have been acquired from another agency via free downloads or inter-local governmental agreements. We will not re-distribute layers obtained from another agency without their explicit permission. You may inquire with us about these layers and we will provide you with the contact information for the proper data custodian.
