Ginmill Barn Ginmill Barn stands today, testament to the care of an experienced and artistic eye and the sheer unwavering determination to restore a period building that would otherwise have been completely lost. Built in the 17th Century as a threshing barn, it was extended in the 1800’s with a unique hexagonal section which housed a central post and machinery, called a gin, around which space a horse would walk and provide the power to turn vast cogs and mill wheels, it is from this that the barn takes its name. “We literally chanced upon this building,” explains Richard “it was almost a derelict shell, with holes in the walls and roof - but there was something so special about it that refused to be ignored.” The restoration took 4 careful years, a malleable plan that drew on Richards’s artistic and quirky nature to create a wonderful meld of traditional materials in a modern and contemporary way, but always considering and working with the features and narrative of the barn itself. The result is an absolute triumph, its exciting spaces a complete delight. Features abound – but in a very gentle and understated manner. Original rounded cobbles that were uncovered in one area found a new home as a plinth, enhancing the space underneath a bespoke contemporary spiral staircase; 17th Century meeting the 21st Century with perfect form and symmetry. These insightful touches are everywhere and as such the period nature and character of the house has been elevated to a level that shows that, with this house, this home, the restoration journey has been a complete labour of love. Exposed stone, brickwork, timbers and even parts of the original machinery describe function this barn once served and its place in local history. “We always stayed true to the vision we had for Ginmill,” says Janis “we absolutely knew where we wanted to take it and we are thrilled with the way it works for every aspect of family life. The spaces are so light and bright and flow so beautifully together – our moments of greatest joy have been sharing Ginmill with our family and friends.” “The house works so well on so many levels, “ adds Richard “but the memory that will always stay with me was the wedding reception we held here for over 60 guests. I went to the mezzanine level and just quietly watched our family, friends and children moving and interacting with the spaces below – chatting with each other, the sound of laughter filling the air, whilst excited children ran to and fro, it was a very special moment, Ginmill Barn was complete, and Ginmill Barn had just become an incredible home - in the very truest sense.”* Richard and Janis * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property.
