Welcome to Ventures for Hope... this is no ordinary catalog!

d

Ventures for Hope is an all volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to creating hope for the world’s most poor. Every dollar of profit from this catalog goes to help people in dire need to break out of the cycle of poverty. Our items come from our amazing nonprofit partners who work with, coach and care for the poor and the oppressed around the globe. We believe nonprofits working together are more effective than alone. Our items are handmade by those in need who want to change their lives. Each item is beautiful – and has a beautiful face and story of hope behind it. We need your help in making the world a better place for: Dolores (page 4) who could not provide for her family without the job she has through Creaciones Chonita in Guatemala. An Qui Er (page 10) who after years of abuse and exploitation escaped to Starfish where she has a job making jewelry and a real family for the first time. Virginia (page 19) who began working at age eight, but now is able to support her family in a job she loves making beautiful pillows in Kenya.

e

Nomi (page 27) who became a victim of sexual abuse at age eight and now lives in a special needs home. The organization named for Nomi is dedicated to providing opportunities to survivors and women at risk of sexual trafficking.

The necklace comes from Ventures for Hope nonprofit partner, Ten Thousand Villages who works directly with Entoto Beth Artisans in Ethiopia. THE CAPIZ SNOWFLAKE ORNAMENTS ARE MADE BY SAFFY (Social Action for Filipino Youth). SAFFY was founded by SR. Juliaan Mullie, a Belgian nun, to create sources of livelihood for impoverished women and youth in marginalized areas of Manila. They specialize in items hand-made with capiz shells which are washed, dried, cut into shapes and edged with metal wire. All windows in the Philippines were at one time made from capiz shells. Producing capiz products for SAFFY has given women like Grace Sevillano (pictured here) the opportunity to care for the needs of her six children.

THE BLACK GLIMMER BRACELET IS MADE BY CREACIONES CHONITA, which was started in 1981 by Concepción Sojuel Menodza, a widow in Guatemala who lost her husband to the violence of civil war and who needed to find a way to support herself and her children. Through the years Creaciones Chonita has expanded to provide work at fair wages for many widows and young women of the community. Dolores (pictured here) had wanted to learn how to make beaded jewelry since she was a young girl. Though life in Santiago is difficult, Dolores and her sister are able to sustain themselves with income earned from jewelry-making and were even able to build a small home made from concrete. THESE GLORIOUS PILLOWS ARE ALL MADE BY GLORY OF Africa, a nonprofit that empowers marginalized African women in areas where poverty is rampant and jobs are scarce. Women like Virginia (pictured here) come together to learn to sew at no cost to them and to stitch one-of-a-kind designer pillows in an atmosphere of love and grace. Virginia shares in her own words that she “always loved fabric and had a deep desire to learn to sew and to work in this field. My life has not been easy. As a child living in a Kenyan slum, I needed to contribute to the family income at a young age and began working at age 8. After my mother died a few years later, I took on complete responsibility for my younger brother. A few years after that, when my sister died, I became the mother for my niece and nephew. When I became part of Glory of Africa, I learned to sew. I have become skilled in making the most complex of our designs. I’m thankful to God for the opportunity to support my family and hope this project will bless many women.” We’re all about HOPE! www.venturesforhope.org. Quantities limited. | 11

THE KENYA SWIRL NECKLACE IS MADE BY TRINITY jewelry crafts located on the edge of Kariobangi, one of the poorest sections of Nairobi and home to thousands of Kenyans. Profits are shared by the group, artisans participate in decision making and workers benefit from a pension and savings program. Founder and manager Joseph Muchina received training to make jewelry through a program offered by the National Council of Churches of Kenya. Muchina believes that economic opportunity is the most effective way to address poverty. Faith (pictured here) had a difficult life when she was younger: both her parents were jobless, and they could not always afford basic needs, like food, clothing and medical care, nor pay school fees consistently for her younger siblings and her. She is happy that life has been easier for her family since she joined Trinity and began earning a steady income. 12 |

“Because of Starfish I now feel HOPE for the future” a

b

“Before I came to Starfish, I forgot how to laugh and cry. Now I feel secure and safe.” -An Qu Er, 21 THE RYAN NECKLACE AND OTHER STARFISH jewelry are made by previously exploited women in Asia. Starfish operates three shelters for these women where they are offered work, counseling and healing relationships. An Qu Er’s father left her family when she was very young. She wanted to go to school, but there was no money. Her mother remarried and her stepfather abused her, but she could tell no one. She left and with no other way to support herself, ended up selling her body to survive. When she thought she had reached the end, she met two women from the Starfish project. “At first I was doubtful that my life would really change, but the kindness of these people touched me and helped me learn to trust again. They gave me hope. I now work in jewelry production – I work hard and I am happy. I celebrated my 21st birthday here. It was the first time someone made me a birthday cake and sang to me.” 14 |

The book tells the true story of Dr. Kwabena Darko (Kojo in the book) who at a young age started a tiny poultry farm which grew to become the largest in west Africa. (Dr. Kwabena Darko went on to run for the Presidency of Ghana, serve on the board of Ghana’s Central Bank, and become an ordained church minister and chairman of global microfinance agency Opportunity International). Do you know someone who needs more HOPE (and who doesn’t)? Ventures for Hope Book and Music Recommendations Heartache and Hope in Haiti

HELP THANKS WOW

By Len and Cherylann Gengel

By Anne Lamott

We love New York Times-bestselling author Anne Lamott. She is funny, honest, practical and insightful – just what you need if you are looking for a hope boost. In this short book which focuses on prayer, she reminds us of the power of prayer in the face of tough times and daily hardships. This is a book for those of all faiths – even none. Lamott defines prayer as “communication from the heart to that which surpasses understanding and suggests praying to “the Good” if you are uncomfortable praying to God. She discusses three essential prayers: asking for help, summoning gratitude, and nurturing wonder. She is her hilarious self along the way – sharing her own personal stories that make us feel like we’re having coffee with a friend. $18

If you live in Massachusetts, you’ve heard the heart wrenching story of Britney Gengel, a vibrant nineteen year old sophomore who traveled to Haiti in January 2010 to work for an aide group. Deeply moved after only a short time in Haiti, she texted her mother that she dreamed of returning to open an orphanage of her own. But hours later, an earthquake leveled Port-au-Prince and the Hotel Montana where Britney’s group was staying. For thirty-three days, her family lived a nightmare with conflicting stories in the post-quake chaos of finding Britney, then losing her. After a gut-wrenching trip to the Haitian capital ten days after the quake, they learned the truth: Brit was not coming home alive. Vowing that her death would not be in vain, the Gengels kept alive their daughter’s dream by building an orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti. This amazing story is proof that you can find meaning and purpose in tragedy, that faith and love are everlasting, and that one person’s dream can change the destiny of thousands. 100% of the profits of this book will benefit The Be Like Brit Orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti. $20

Offiong Bassey

`Offiong’ which she tells us translates from Nigerian to `God’s Moon’ is an appropriate first name for this talented young singer, songwriter, producer, and poet. She is the first generation from her Nigerian family born in the U.S., but she brings the traditions of West Africa as well as a mix of soul, jazz, gospel, and Latin to her music. Her ear for harmonies and phrasing, power vocals, and versatility create music that is fresh, inspiring, and fun. Her thoughtful lyrics are a message of encouragement and personal fulfillment, and have roots in the African storytelling to which her grandmother introduced her and the mission that her name has come to signify. This is uplifting stuff! $18

Gina Praino – Some Peace Again

Gina Praino and her husband, parents of four young children, were both diagnosed with cancer within months of each other. Gina’s husband Phil lost his battle to cancer; Gina survived. She composed this CD, and dedicated it to her husband in gratitude for the love that survives grief. The title song -- Some Peace Again – is a prayer for finding peace in the midst of grief. This beautifully produced CD will lift your spirit, and Gina’s voice will sooth your soul. Gina serves as Pastor of the Charles River Vineyard and is on the Board of Ventures for Hope. $18

Hamsa Pendant

The Hamsa pendant in sterling silver makes a thoughtful gift of blessing and good wishes for anyone. The hamsa (or khamsah, Arabic meaning literally five) depicts an open right hand and is regarded as a sign of protection and good luck across all the major religions. The symbol may predate Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Islam, it is also known as the hand of Fatima, so named to commemorate Muhammad’s daughter Fatima Zahra. Levantine Christians call it the hand of Mary, for the Virgin Mary. Judaism refers to it as the hand of Miriam in remembrance of the biblical Miriam, sister of Moses and Aaron. We call it a sign of hope and unity. Ten Thousand Villages, Peru. Sterling silver. 16L in., adjustable. $89

Did You Know? Strides against global poverty have been significant in the past decade, but it is still a battle that needs to be fought. - 2 .4 billion people survive on less than $2/day ($700/year). Nearly 1.2 billion people live on less than $1.25 per day ($440/year) – the World Bank’s definition of the poverty line. - The cost of such poverty is high. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. -N early 1 billion people are illiterate. An estimated 72 million children of primary school age are not in school; 57% are girls. Many are unable to attend school because of income – and the poverty cycle continues. - If you make above $35,000 a year – you are among the world’s richest 1%! (We know it may not feel like it – but it’s true!) We believe (and experts agree) that one of the most powerful weapons in the fight against poverty is economic development (and hope!). Ventures for Hope is focused on helping to employ those at the bottom – those who have no training and other job options. You can make a difference even through something as simple as what you buy! If you want to do more – please consider an extra donation to Ventures for Hope or any of our partner nonprofits.
