GETTING AN ESTATE ORGANIZED

STEP 1: MAKE LIST OF ASSETS A list of assets is for the executor’s or successor trustee’s convenience to help them do their job when the time comes. List all property owned, including property that is owned jointly with someone else. Include the following items: real estate; cash and bank accounts; stocks, bonds, and mutual funds; life insurance; retirement plans; wages or benefits from employers; small business interests; limited partnership; intangible assets (such as: promissory notes, court judgments, patents, copyrights, contractual payments or royalties); tangible assets of significant value either financial or emotional (such as: art, jewelry, antiques heirlooms, collectibles.) STEP 2: ESTIMATE THE VALUE Estimate the value for the major assets. STEP 3: DETERMINE HOW TITLE IS HELD ON ASSET To determine who inherits the property and if an asset needs to go through probate, you must know how the property is owned. Typically assets are owned in the following manner: sole ownership, joint tenancy, tenancy by the entirety, tenancy in common, community property with right of survivor ship, community property, and held in trust. STEP 4: CONTACT LIST List in the provided spaces contact information for individuals whom are familiar with your financial or business matters that could offer assistance to your executor or successor trustee. As well as contact information for your beneficiaries so they can be properly notified.
