Get Your Students to Recycle in 3-D In conjunction with our Recycle.More.Often campaign, the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works’ Recycling Division is sponsoring the Recycling in 3-D Sculpture Contest for middle school students. We are seeking interested participants from your school. The Recycling in 3-D Sculpture Contest challenges students to lend their creative talents to the noble cause of recycling. To participate, students will use recyclables from their homes to create a sculpture depicting either a winter holiday or winter activity. Participants will be encouraged to use one to two weeks worth of recyclable materials to show the volume of recyclables produced by their households. The Recycling Division is asking for your help to get the word out about this contest and in encouraging students to participate. Enclosed you will find the contest kit for contestants. Students may participate as individuals or in teams of up to three students. The contest kit contains Recycling Information, Official Rules, Helpful Hints, Application Form, and Prize Information for Winners. Prizes will be awarded for First, Second, and Third Place sculptures as well as Honorable Mention. Winning and Honorable Mention sculptures will be on display throughout the holiday season at a public location (TBA) in Anne Arundel County. Use recyclable materials from home or school to create a sculpture displaying your favorite winter holiday or activity.

Materials to Use: Recyclable paper, plastic, and metal items. No glass please! Examples: The examples on the left, are winners from the previous year to give you an idea. Your final sculptures can represent any winter holiday or winter activity you choose. Helpful Hints: 1. Use one to two weeks of recyclable materials from your home to create your sculpture. Materials must be clean and free of food or dirt. 2. Please, no glass or yard waste in your sculpture. 3. Your sculpture should depict a winter holiday or activity. 4. The maximum length and width for your sculpture is 4 feet x 4 feet. 5. Your sculpture needs to be delivered to a public location, so make sure you can transport it. 6. Submit the enclosed application form to the Recycling Division by December 16, 2011. 7. Use glue, tape, string, wire, etc. to hold the sculpture together securely. 8. Your sculpture must be able to stand on its own without being attached to any other structure. 9. Winning sculptures will be on display for several weeks, so you’ll want your sculpture to be durable.

Sculpture Contest Official Rules Entry Rules 1. This contest is sponsored by the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works Recycling Division and open to all Anne Arundel County middle school students. The Recycling Division is looking for larger than life sculptures that show what you’re recycling at home! 2. Individual students can enter the contest by faxing an official application form to the Recycling Division (fax number: 410-222-4484) by December 16. Forms may also be filled out and submitted online at www.recyclemoreoften.com beginning December 5. 3. Contestants must deliver their sculptures to location (TBD) by 5:00 PM on Thursday, January 5, 2012 for consideration. 4. The sculpture must contain ONLY items that are recyclable through Anne Arundel County’s Curbside Recycling Program. Glue, tape, string, wire, etc. may be used to to hold the sculpture together securely. Eligible items include: Paper: Cardboard – boxes, packaging, empty paper towel and toilet paper holders Boxes – shoe, toy, frozen food, cereal, food, pizza, beverage cases, six-pack holders Books – hard and soft cover, magazines, catalogs, telephone books Sheets of paper – school papers, colored, work papers, craft projects, gift wrapping, tissue, junk mail, envelopes, file folders, shredded paper Cans, Bottles and Jars: Metal – tin, steel and aluminum cans such as beverage containers, pet food cans and empty aerosol cans Plastics – containers, bottles, jugs, jars, silverware, bags, buckets, cups, toys, wrap Please, no glass or yard waste for this contest. Contestants are encouraged to use a variety of recyclables from a timeframe of one to two weeks. 5. Sculptures should depict a winter holiday or activity. Examples of holidays are Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or New Year. Activities could be sledding, skiing, or ice skating. 6. The width and length of the sculpture are limited to 4 feet each. The height of the sculpture is not limited, however, the sculpture must be able to stand on its own without being attached to any other structure.

7. All materials must be clean and free of food remains or dirt. 8. All parts of the sculpture must be securely attached. Glue, tape, string, wire, etc. are permitted. 9. Please, only one entry per student/group. 10. Sculptures will be judged on originality, creativity, and percentage of recyclables used.

Selection Process A Selection Committee will review the submissions and select the winners at the official judging/ceremony. See Notification. All entries are subject to the Selection Committee’s decision. The Recycling Division is sponsoring this contest to solicit original and creative sculptures for the Recycling in 3-D Sculpture Contest. The Recycling Division reserves the right to select, in its sole discretion and for any reason, winning sculptures from those submitted to The Recycling Division for this project. The Recycling Division also reserves the right to reject, in its sole discretion, any sculpture that includes advertising except with respect to Anne Arundel County’s recycling program, refers to companies or other entities, reflects social disrespect, contains inappropriate slogans and/or images, or is deemed unacceptable by The Recycling Division for any other reason.

Ownership Once a sculpture is chosen, the winner hereby assigns the copyright of it to The Recycling Division, which shall have the right to produce and distribute the sculpture and its images to all relevant media. No payment will be made to the winner for these rights. The finished sculptures will be property of The Recycling Division.

Notification Winners will be announced at the Recycling in 3-D Sculpture Contest ceremony on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at a location (TBD). Judging will begin at 5:00 PM. All contestants are invited to bring sculptures to the location beginning at 3:00 PM.

Prizes and Recognition Visa ® Gift Cards will be awarded for First ($180), Second ($120), and Third Place ($60) sculptures as well as Honorable Mention ($30).
